RICO (Switch)

RICO (Switch)RICO (Switch)
Publisher: Rising Star Games / Developer: Ground Shatter
Release Date: 14th Mar 2019 (USA) / 14th Mar 2019 (UK/EU)

RICO is simple, moreish fun in arcade FPS form; a literal corridor shooter that makes every gunfight a glorious exchange of bullets as you fight your way to the words ‘Room cleared’ over and over again. It’s great fun in single-player, but when you head into each randomised set of rooms in co-op, you’ll shoot your way into an interactive buddy cop movie right there in the palm of your hands. Loading times and the occasional bit of pop-in aside, this is another fine addition to the console’s growing list of first-person shooters.

Doom 3 (Switch eShop)

Doom 3 (Switch eShop)Doom 3 (Switch eShop)
Publisher: Zenimax Media / Developer: id Software
Release Date: 26th Jul 2019 (USA) / 26th Jul 2019 (UK/EU)

A stuttery frame rate isn’t enough to derail one of the most memorable FPS campaigns of yesteryear. Doom 3 still has the power to unnerve and while elements of it may be showing their age now, the overall package – complete with the BFG Edition improvements and expansion packs – still guarantees value for money. This entry in the series might be different from the others, but it's well worth rediscovering on Switch.

PAYDAY 2 (Switch)

PAYDAY 2 (Switch)PAYDAY 2 (Switch)
Publisher: Starbreeze / Developer: Overkill Software
Release Date: 27th Feb 2018 (USA) / 23rd Feb 2018 (UK/EU)

Payday 2’s devotion to its core gameplay of co-operative and gleeful armed robbery makes it a unique way to team up with other players on Switch, although it's showing its age these days. The inclusion of many of the game’s far more exciting DLC missions as standard does make its diverse mix of heists a more tantalising prospect for new adopters, and the relatively smooth port means it's a great way to experience the FPS on a handheld, and provided you can overlook some uninspiring textures, it offers fun, heist-happy first person action with friends.

Bulletstorm: Duke of Switch Edition (Switch eShop)

Bulletstorm: Duke of Switch Edition (Switch eShop)Bulletstorm: Duke of Switch Edition (Switch eShop)
Publisher: Gearbox Publishing / Developer: People Can Fly
Release Date: 30th Aug 2019 (USA) / 30th Aug 2019 (UK/EU)

Bulletstorm was positively received by critics on its initial release all the way back in 2011 but it didn’t sell anywhere near as well as it really should have – a wrong that should hopefully be corrected with this Switch version. This is easily one of the most inventive and straight-up fun shooters of the past ten years; its fantastic Skillshot system, tight combat and ludicrously OTT levels of violence effortlessly make up for any problems it has in the cheesy dialogue or story department. Yes, it’s missing its multiplayer component here and we’d love to see gyroscopic controls patched in sharpish, but overall this is a technically top-notch port of a stellar first-person shooter that you should really check out – especially if you missed out on it the first time around.

Overwatch: Legendary Edition (Switch)

Overwatch: Legendary Edition (Switch)Overwatch: Legendary Edition (Switch)
Publisher: Blizzard Entertainment / Developer: Blizzard Entertainment
Release Date: 15th Oct 2019 (USA) / 15th Oct 2019 (UK/EU)

At its heart, Overwatch on the Switch was always going to be a bit of a tough sell. Those who somehow haven’t played it yet could easily buy a better-performing version on other platforms, while those who have played it to death may be put off by the weaker performance and the lack of shared progression. Even so, having the capability to play a match of Overwatch while using the restroom is '2019 living' at its absolute finest, and the kind of flexibility offered up by the Switch’s portability is not something to be understated. Overwatch on Switch comes recommended, but with the caveat that you should consider first why you’re buying it. If you intend on playing it plenty in handheld mode, we can’t recommend it enough, but if you play mostly docked to the TV, consider first buying it elsewhere.

Call Of Juarez: Gunslinger (Switch eShop)

Publisher: Techland / Developer: Techland
Release Date: 10th Dec 2019 (USA) / 10th Dec 2019 (UK/EU)

Somewhat overlooked and underrated when it was first released, Call Of Juarez: Gunslinger's second rodeo on Switch doesn't really bring anything new to the table that it didn't already bring before, but it's still a brilliant first-person shooter and an entertaining adventure. It does clever things with its story structure and is absolutely worth a blast if you haven't played it elsewhere.

DOOM (Switch)

DOOM (Switch)DOOM (Switch)
Publisher: Bethesda Softworks / Developer: Panic Button
Release Date: 10th Nov 2017 (USA) / 10th Nov 2017 (UK/EU)

The latest game in the series, DOOM - or 'DOOM (2016)' as it's known (although this actually arrived on Switch in 2017) - is something of a wonder on Switch. It might not boast the framerate or visual fidelity of other console versions, but then again it's tough to play your PS4 Pro on the bus. As well as the excellent campaign mode which brilliantly plays on the ridiculousness of the premise and Doomguy's 2D character, DOOM's multiplayer was also a pleasant surprise.

Developer Panic Button set an incredibly high bar with this 'impossible' port, and judging by their work on other games in the interim, we absolutely cannot wait for DOOM Eternal to arrive later this year. If you only play one FPS on Switch, go to hell.

Aaaand it appears our clip has run out. Despite being seasoned firearm professionals, we'll still look at our gun in confusion and pull the trigger a few more times - click, click, click - before grimacing, throwing it out of frame and grabbing our melee weapon.
