Remember that Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker promotion Nintendo ran last year that was exclusive to Switch Online subscribers? In case you forgot, it allowed users of the service to play the game for free for a 10-day period.
Well now, a new game for this very same program has been announced. This time around it's Fire Emblem Warriors:
This title was released in 2017 by Koei Tecmo and didn't get quite as much time to shine as certain other releases. Fire Emblem Warriors will become available to Japanese Switch Online subscribers for one week, from 20th January through to the 26th of January.
Like Captain Toad, users will be able to play through the entire game from start to finish and save data will carry across to the main game if the user decides to purchase it once the online promotion has ended. There'll also be a sale for this game and its DLC (40% off) until the start of next month.
If Nintendo announces something similar here in the west, we'll be sure to let you know.

Cool, a game I haven't played. Hope it comes stateside.
I was wondering when they would continue this
I wonder what game will show up for the West.
@Spoony_Tech I played it a ton, it was a lot of fun. It felt like hyrule warriors but more control over your partners and less focus on post game content.
Hyrule warriors is MEATY
FE Warriors still has a tonf of content but Hyrule Warriors kinda takes the cake.
Good thing I made a japanese account for Joy Mech Fight a while ago
Because there's already a dozen or so of these Dynasty Warriors type games on Switch already.....
If we're following what the past has done, we should be also getting a trial as well soon, but with a different game
I'm not expecting anything. NoJ does all sorts of cool stuff that NoA wouldn't dream of doing.
They can keep it, bring more SNES, and release N64/GBA games for the switch.
Great game. I got the special edition when it came out. Definitely a cool game for Fire Emblem and Warriors fans.
Looking forward to playing it again one day.
@PBandSmelly So this will work with any Nintendo online sub as long as you have access to the Japanese eShop?
Great game but... yeah, the perfect game to make available for a week and then ask people to pay for it. I doubt many players will manage to even unlock the whole cast in a week. It’s a great game but quite grindy and time consuming.
Captain Toad was the type of game you could beat in a week, but this is a different story.
@CaPPa
Yes
I’m bummed that this is only for japan users
Greedy Nintendo didn't include the small DLC on this overpriced Wii U Port Captain Toad.
Anyway. Fire Emblem Warriors is very cool, but not as good as Hyrule Warriors.
@ShadJV
Nintendo is promoting their game to seek customer interest into buying it. It makes more sense to pick a game that would take more time beyond the promotion.
Since America got Mario Tennis Aces the same time that Japan got Captain Toad, i'm hoping we get a fun game to play for free here as well. I'd like to try Fire Emblem Warriors, but I would really dig some Mario Kart 8 Deluxe action, or ARMS, or even Luigis Mansion 3.
I picked a fine time to forget my password for my Japanese Nintendo account.
@CaPPa last time I tried to get the free captitan toad trial from the Japanese website - it let me download it but as my online subscription was tied to my UK account I couldn’t play it.
That contrasts with the Japanese NES and SNES apps as you can play those with any worldwide account that has online attached )although need a Japanese account to download)
I want a new Fire Emblem Warriors - but I want a game that's actually representative of the entire series, like Hyrule was for Zelda
@BongoBongo Same thing here with my US account. I guess one can use platinum coins for a 7 day Japanese online trial period to coincide with the download and play it that way if someone is so inclined.
@patbacknitro18 Seems like they're pushing games that weren't huge sellers in the first place. Maybe Kirby or Yoshi this time?
@MortalKombat2007 that’s essentially what I was saying. This makes more sense to promote this way than Captain Toad, which is easy to beat in a week.
I really hope Nintendo implements this in other territories. That would be a definite +1 for NSO.
@Kalmaro Hyrule Warriors was like almost too overwhelming with stuff to do. I got so annoyed with the rating system as I was trying to unlock everything. I would get two A's and one B and boom it's a B rating overall. Great game though!
@Chunkboi79 Oh yeah the grading system was pretty strict. It started to become easier to just use OP heroes like young link.
