Last year, Nintendo fans got to experience Level-5's beautiful series, Ni no Kuni, for the first time ever, when Wrath of the White Witch was ported across to the Switch. In our review, we said it was a heartwarming experience and a love letter to the golden era of JRPG.
If it has left you hungry to experience more of Ni no Kuni universe, then why not take a look at the Ni no Kuni animated film when it launches on the streaming service Netflix on 16th January. Here's the official description:
Two average teens go on a magical quest to save the life of their friend and her counterpart from another world. But love complicates their journey.
Studio Ghibli animator Yoshiyuki Momose ("Spirited Away") directs this enchanting film based on the renowned video game.
This follows on from the release of Pokémon The Movie: The Power of Us, which arrived at the start of this year on the streaming platform. If you don't happen to have a subscription to this service, you can always try out the free 30-day trial if you're a first time user.

Woah the art style is seriously amazing. That’s to be expected from a Studio Ghibli animator though. I know they were involved in the first game but I didn’t really see them mentioned much when the second one came out.
Have and finished both games... loved them. Happy to see anything related to it.
Hope there is a Nino3 at some point.
Yep. I do plan on watching that because it looks like something I would love 😁
I’m playing the hell out of this game. And with this animation’s release on Netflix, the wife and me now have a date night.😘
I love Ghibli films and the Ni No Kuni games and I’m sure I will love this.
Did Netflix actually invest in this for it to be coming there?
Nice I was actually looking to download this the other day.
@Agramonte which one do you like the best? I'm halfway through the first one and am quite enjoying it. I haven't played the second one.
Is it just me...or does the game look WAAAAAAAAY better than the movie in terms of design and animation quality?
Anyway, I've been dying to try out the game for years now, still haven't picked it up, but hopefully will soon. I'm definitely checking out the movie as well, just wondering if I should do so after I've beaten the game.
Don't get too excited about this, guys. As far as i know this money flopped pretty hard in Japan.
The game is nearing the top of my backlog now, but part of the appeal is Ghibli's involvement. If they're not involved in the film then my interest wanes.
@Agramonte Would love to try 2. Here's hoping it comes to Switch, or the duo comes to XBox. Either way it has my support
Still never played Ni no Kuni, but if this is an unrelated story, I'll definitely be checking this out. The animation, as with the games, is gorgeous, and it looks like an interesting mix of whimsical fantasy and depressing social drama.
This movie and the dragon quest movie are THE WORST ANIME OF 2019. Trust me, don't expect much from this movie.
The original No no Kuni was released on the DS in Japan only. The Switch release was just the first time Nintendo fans outside Japan got to play it.
Gonna watch it someday.
I'll watch it for sure since it's on Netflix and review it on my website.
@Nomad I played the first 1 on PS3 and 2nd on my PC at max. So I had a bigger WOW moment on #2 exploring and arriving at the different locations, cites, characters. But feel maybe if I get the Remaster on PC that could change. I think I am one of the few that liked the combat on #1 better - I also was more attached to the characters in #1. But I enjoyed building/planing my City in #2 and found the pacing better - but could have done without the skirmishes. Love the music in #2.
They both 100% worth playing and the time you need to invest in them.
@XBontendo Oh, hope it does also so you can play it.
@Agramonte Thanks. Sounds like they are both great games just different in some ways.
I always wanted to play both so I will likey get the 2nd one when I get the chance.
I was going to go full Disney +, but now I'm second guessing!
I wasn't a big fan of Ni No Kuni 2, I started that right after Ys and it just didn't grab me like I thought it would. However, I would 100% watch an anime based off of it! The world is super charming
@Mach_Rider The movie was not made by Studio Ghibli.
Also, Studio Ghibli and Studio Ponoc have a signature artificial filter that makes their digitally-animated films look like analogue 35mm animation from the past. Even their CGI film Earwig and the Witch has this 35mm filter present.
They actually started this trend of making digital films look like vintage 35mm film.
Rian Johnson did it for his very first digital film Knives Out, and Netflix also did it for The Cuphead Show. Disney also did this for the new Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers movie.
Dune 2021 and The Batman 2022 also did this but they printed out the digitally-filmed footage to 35mm instead of just using a filter.
The Ni no Kuni film looks too pristine and too digital to look like a Ghibli film.
Ghibli's signature look is the retro analogue 35mm film look with grain and gate weave.
