In case you missed the news, Sonic the Hedgehog will be running about in a pair of red and white Puma shoes in his live-action movie, due out on Valentine's Day next year. Unlike the games, though, he might not be wearing his iconic kicks from the get-go.
You see, if a new television spot released by Paramount Pictures Australia is anything to go by, Sonic will receive his famous pair of runners at some point during the movie. So, in other words, don't expect to see him speeding around in them from the beginning of it.
As James Marsden's character explains in the clip above, Sonic struggles to "control" his speed and these shoes will help him channel it. It's sort of similar to how the blue blur unlocks and receives shoe upgrades in some of his video games.

So the shoes are given to him in an attempt to help him control his speed.
Seems a bit tame to me.
Maybe in keeping with the game he should have smashed a TV and found some random red shoes accidentally left inside by the Chinese factory worker who made the thing. I mean, that would work right?
Whose gonna start this new petition to make them rework how Sonic gets the shoes in the movie?
One of the trailers did show that Sonic had worn out a ton of different shoes, so yeah not too surprising.
Will the sequel focus on the iconic slow down shoes from Sonic Labyrinth?
At least they're not the Hover Shoes.
@Kienda Isn't that a bit back-asswards? Usually, you have a good control of Sonic's speed until he busts open a TV with shoes inside, then he runs too fast and smacks his face into spikes!

I see they didn't look for design advice from Big Red Button. The clear way to help is by wrapping bandages and plaster of paris around the trainers.

This kinda makes sense, I remember reading some book when I was a kid that explained that in the SATM universe, the shoes were a gift from Sonic's uncle because Sonic apparently burned through sneakers really fast, haha. The shoes were supposed to be custom made for his speed. Plus y'know, shoe upgrades in the classic trilogy. I can live with this.

@CaptainRPG i wouldn't say that's a bad thing tbh, it's just a shame they censored Sonic X over here. A slightly more mature film would be welcome along with the jokes but I'm not counting on it.
