Now updated with the four new additions coming 12th December 2019.
Well, it took a while, but after months of rumours, speculation and player wishes, Nintendo eventually put SNES games on Nintendo Switch back in September and has finally begun adding to the roster of Super NES games on the system.
Just like the NES games already available on the console, the Super NES library is available exclusively to Nintendo Switch Online members. The games benefit from special online features such as the Rewind function, and currently boasts 20 titles, with four more arriving very soon on 12th December.
While there are plenty of solid-gold classics here that you'll have heard of, we thought it might be a good idea to run down the full list so you can pick and choose what to play first. In case you're in a rush, we've put them in the order we personally think you should play them.
1. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past is rightly considered a 16-bit classic and offers hours of engrossing entertainment and tantalising challenge. Not many games from over two decades ago still feel as fresh and tightly constructed as this; it represents Nintendo at its very best. Everything is so focused and finely-tuned that it's genuinely hard to see how it could possibly be improved upon. What we have here isn't just one of the finest games in the SNES library, it's one of the most engaging and captivating classics in the history of video gaming.
2. Super Mario World (SNES)

Super Mario World is the apex of 16-bit platforming, a cornerstone of the gaming canon, and - most importantly - just as much fun to play today as it was all those years ago. If you're yet to experience the thrill of discovering a secret exit, the joy of soaring through a level with your super-cape, or the unique tragicomedy of accidentally running off a cliff while trying to catch up to a runaway Yoshi, you're in for some of gaming's best-loved and most iconic moments. This is one of the best games of all time; clear your weekend, call over a Player Two, and enjoy!
3. Super Metroid (SNES)

Super Metroid is a science-fiction masterpiece that not only redefined everything that was great about the Metroid series up until that point, but it also showcased a world striking enough to prove for the makings of a long-lasting franchise. Engrossing atmosphere, tight controls, pure exploration, and gnarly bosses are just a few of the things that make this an unforgettable experience from front-to-back. It honestly hasn’t aged a day, like many of its SNES brethren, which is a testament as to why the system is often regarded as one of the best home consoles of all time.
4. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (SNES)

Yoshi's Island isn't just a great platformer: it's a reminder of why this silly little hobby of ours is so wonderful. Sure, the game contains no political satire, no poetic justice, no character development. But if what Miyamoto and Tezuka crafted isn't a work of art, then the definition of "art" needs to be amended.
5. Super Mario Kart (SNES)

With controls, track design and item balance meticulously structured, the mechanics over twenty tracks and four cups sketched-out the foundations of the franchise. Alongside a stern 150cc class and Special Cup challenge, boisterously cheap AI rivals can’t dampen the urge to rocket start, hop and power slide your way to a smooth, perfect lap run. Eight characters with handling based upon weight add replay value for approaching Time Trials, or two-player GP and Battle Mode showdowns. Super Mario Kart propelled the series forward from the starting line as a pacesetter, not only amongst karting games, but as a leader of the pack in the retro racing genre.
6. Demon's Crest (SNES)
It's hard to find anything not to like about Demon's Crest, despite its difficulty. The ability to play the levels in different orders, not to mention the free-roaming feel of the game make it seem like an RPG at times. The fact that it's also chock-full of gameplay elements just further makes the title endearing and enjoyable. It's fairly safe to say that if you loved the Ghosts 'n Goblins franchise, you're going to love this spin-off, and even if you're not a big fan, you may find that the added playability of Demon's Crest might be enough to make a fan out of you.
7. Star Fox (SNES)

The release of Star Fox and its integration of the Super FX chip successfully distinguished the SNES from the competition, at least until Sega cunningly placed its own nifty processor into the Mega Drive Virtua Racing cart a year later. However, a year is an eternity in gaming and even Sega was not that cunning a fox in this instance. Argonaut and Nintendo created a magical team for this project. The sparks flew from the screen in a genuine mix of European and Japanese talent. Aurally, visually and in its character design and presentation, it was phenomenal in 1993 and will be rightly remembered as a classic.
8. Super Tennis (SNES)

Easily one of the best sports games on any console, Super Tennis is an utterly fantastic replication of the sport which, despite its cute visuals, is arguably more authentic than many modern takes on tennis. With four shot types to master and loads of little skills and tactics to learn, it has the kind of depth that only the very best sports sims can boast. A challenging campaign mode is also present, but it's the two-player mode which is perhaps the star of the show.
9. F-Zero (SNES)
F-Zero might lack the embellishments of its N64 successor and could really benefit from a two-player mode, but that doesn’t detract from the overall experience. This is a classic racer which has a level of purity and playability that rival titles have been struggling to emulate ever since. From the tight controls to the impeccable course design and timeless presentation, F-Zero is a joy to behold.
10. Super Punch-Out!! (SNES)
Featuring the same gameplay you know and love from the original arcade game and the NES port, the SNES entry in Little Mac's timing-based boxing series benefits from some lovely big sprites which inject even more character, colour and energy into the same basic premise. Super Punch-Out!! still stands up as a fun experience and is definitely worth investigating in the Super Nintendo Switch Online collection.

You know Nintendo brought the best for the first 20 SNES games when Breath of Fire is number 19!
Wish they would give us Star Fox 2 or Earthbound/Mother 3. But hey we can always hope they're coming.
Is it going to be called Star Fox on the UK version??
A solid start!
I just hope they bring Earthbound to the system
Was there ever any doubt that A Link to the Past would be #1? The game is a masterpiece. Many other games on the list are amazing too!
I JUST WANT TO KNOW HOW MANY HOURS UNTIL IT'S AVAILABLE!!?? 😠😭
The game list for the SNES Classic was much better than this tbh. But at least it has the big three of Zelda, Mario and Metroid.
I am so excited that these are finally here. And the selection is great! I just need them to start on DKC and get Kirby Super Star out and this will be perfect for me.
Super metroid is number 2 and f-zero top 5 (I did not play at least 12 games of this list and have absolutely no interest in even trying it anyways)
I'm pretty sure Yoshi's Island advocates the legalization of marijuana by making it very fun to use.
Breath of Fire is criminally low on this list. Great game!
Super Mario World will be played first
Wait... Super Metroid isnt the first? This list is sooooo wrong!
For me, Yoshi's Island is Miyamoto's masterpiece and I say that, despite never playing it when it originally released. I first played it on GBA and then on a Wii emulator years later. It is the pinnacle of the 16bit era and other than Baby Mario's crying, is flawless. I bet there will be many long time Nintendo fans who've never played it though with it arriving so late in the SNES' life. If so, you're in for a real treat.
It's a shame we probably won't get Super Castlevania.
It's a fantastic opening lineup and a real treat for retro fans and the likes of Mario World and Yoshi's Island have never been matched as 2D platformers, not even by Nintendo themselves. Can't wait for tomorrow (UK)
Does anyone have the update for this on their Switch yet? I know Nintendo said "today" but just curious if anyone already has the update?
Such a great list to start out with. Can't wait to see what they bring in the future. Hopefully it's 2+ SNES games a month.
No.1 is Super Metroid then followed by Super Mario Kart clearly 😁
Wow, ALttP and Super Metroid came out in 2007? It seems much longer ago than that?! I could have sworn I was only a child when I played them... 😂😂
@Judgedean We have to wait until midnight in the UK.
Actually...
The SNES games i want to play in physical are :
1. Tiny Toons Adventures Wacky Sports
2. Super Mario All Stars
3. Pop'n Twin Bee
4. ??? (Still pending)
Don't be surprised with my choice.
I'm different.
This is the most excited I have ever been as a Switch owner.
1. Super Metroid
2. Super Mario World
3. Yoshi's Island
UNPOPULAR OPINION: Link to the Past is one of the most boring Zelda games
@CurryPowderKeg79 Thanks - that's 6pm UK time here if that's the case.
Stunt Race FX has a big place in my heart, it was just one of those games that clicked with me when I was a kid, I couldn’t get enough. This is a solid start to one of the best libraries in gaming. Much to be stoked about.
SUPER TENNIS!!!
Stunt Race FX is an awesome game! Glad to have it on original cart.
@sketchturner I didn't like it when I played it years ago on emulator, I got to the dark world, turned into a pink bunny, didn't knew what to do, and just dropped it. This is the perfect chance to pick it up again!
Awesome. Online NES games were fine but they really don't hold a candle to the SNES library and it's great that it's finally (almost) here.
@Savino I know right ?
Enough with the SNES games already; when are the N64 games coming to Nintendo Online...
@Spoony_Tech
I agree. Hopefully we get the 2nd game as well.
Happy to see that they are bringing Super Nintendo games to the Switch. Yes, almost half of these were on the SNES Classic, but it would be disappointing if they launched this without either Super Mario World or A Link to the Past.
Seeing Super Tennis as a launch game was a pleasant surprise, as I have fond memories of playing it with my brother.
Normally, I would use this as an excuse to once again play Super Mario World (not only my fave SNES game but my fave game period), but I just recently finished a playthrough of it. I think, however, that I'll probably play Kirby's Dreamland 3, Pilotwings, or Demon's Crest first.
I am happy with this! It would just be so cool if they released Harvest Moon SNES!
@chooselife YES
A lot of these are on the SNES Classic, so I'm more interested in the ones that aren't. Shamefully, I've been gaming forever and I have never, ever played Pilotwings. I also never played Stunt Race FX. Brawl Brothers is a rather unpolished yet charming beat-em-up which I enjoyed for a while back in the day so I'm eager to play that again. And I'm going to be engrossed in Breath of Fire for sure. Can't wait to see what else is in store.
Nintendo is giving me far too many games to play. I don't know how much more I can take.
So uhhhh, is Red Arremer (AKA Firebrand) going to be a Smash character?
No Donkey Kong Country games at all in the first 20 is curious.
Nintendo usually acknowledges the existence of the original at least.
@Bunkerneath fair question depends if we are getting NTSC or PAL Roms. Most of the time they do NTSC cause it looks better and probably easier to access.
Very happy about Yoshi's Island!! Hoping the Donkey Kong Country trilogy is yet to come! 🤞
I got up early to play before work and the games weren’t there. I couldn’t find an SNES “app” on the eshop either. How do you access them?
Stunt race fx is my first game
I like that we are getting a Puyo Puyo game that never came to the West. Surprised it wasn’t the Kirby’s Avalanche version.
@AceGranade When the 9.0 update hits at noon our time.
@Dualmask I've been gaming since the prehistoric era and I've also never played Pilotwings or Stunt Race FX. I had a Megadrive so that's my excuse. I have played Pilotwings 64 though and I loved it.
Not a big sports guy, but I will check out Super Tennis. Sounds like a lot of fun.
I've been dying for anything metroid (I know we have the first one but that one has definitely not aged well at all) so I'm down for Super Metroid!
@echoplex not being a fanboy here but if you look at the reviews (from the past and today) SM has a much higher score than SMW or LTTP!
I think they are the top tier from the Snes era, but SM is the best of the bunch.
@swagbag713
Agree! I have all versions of Metroid 1 (Nes, NesDisk, GBA) and I am a huge fan of the game, but it is a pain to play.
Give me Zero Mission any day!
@OorWullie Pilotwings 64 is awesome. I only wish I could play it with a rewind feature so I can get a perfect score on everything. You can do the whole level perfectly but if you're just slightly out on landing then you have to do the whole mission again.
Stunt Race FX! This game blew my mind as a child. Those 3D graphics! Totally gutted it didn’t make the cut on SNES classic - so so so happy to have it on Switch. Thank you Ninty. I love you too.
Am very happy there's different games to the SNES Mini there.
Here's hoping for Unirally (Uniracer) as it's such a unique game. Hoping for all three Donkey Kong Country games as they're my favourite SNES games by a mile.
Wonder if we'll get monthly updates like with NES online or whether we won't see any more for a while because they've released a load at once.
It’s always gonna be Super Mario World at #1 for me.
@wazlon I think there was some lawsuit with Pixar that will prevent Uniracers from ever happening again. Which is a shame because that game was so unique and amazing.
Suuuuuuper Tennis!!!! 😍😍😍 I loved that game on snes. Still have the cartridge!
@sketchturner I'm not so sure about A Link to the Past either. Really enjoyed A Link Between Worlds on 3DS but can't understand why I struggled to like the SNES game.
Am going to have another play through with an open mind, hoping to enjoy it this time.
@Dualmask I had a feeling it was something like that, such a shame.
@AceGranade I think once it is available it will be a free download from the eShop in the Switch Online section (like Tetris99 and the NES app).
Top 3 are spot on, and that will be the order I play them in as well 😄
I hope Donkey Kong Country trilogy will come in Rare replay!
WE DID IT YOU GUYS! It's a time for celebration! Now when will the N64 games get added ;]
Freak! I JUST bought Fire Emblem (finally) so it would figure that some of my all time favorite games would come out this week for free. LTTP is definitely first for me followed by Metroid.
@wazlon @Edu23XWiiU
I've beaten LttP four times over the past 20 years. Even though I didn't enjoy it the first time, I keep trying to give it another shot, but it never resonates with me. 🙁
get outta here with that breath of fire ranking lol
@sketchturner same way with me man, links awakening was way better to me.
Looking forward to some Super Tennis with the kids.
This amazing selection of games just goes to show the SNES is the best system Nintendo has made. And to be honest my favourite console EVER!!
The wait was terrible, I’m glad they finally did the right thing. I wonder if the Japanese service will be getting different games... hmm...
A reduced price would encourage gamers who don't play on line games.
Some of the best games of all time are on this list, I can't believe we're actually getting Stunt Race FX right out of the gate too! I'm hoping Nintendo and Rare can work together again and bring Killer Instinct too, I spent way too many hours as a teenager mastering my combos on that game
@Tyranexx Being in there with super metroid is steep competition though. That's a coin toss for many
@antonio2244 Lol, maybe if Rare owned Donkey Kong, but they don't- I'm sure we'll see the whole trilogy on the app at some point
They totally trolled everyone in the Direct by scrolling through the consoles, pausing on the SNES, and then switching to the Neo Geo.
@Quarth It’s on the Castlevania Anniversary Collection, so yeah it’s already released on the Switch
@Tandy255 And the SNK letter-get cutscene was so brilliant
is Nintendo Switch Online mandatory to have access to SNES game or will they sell them individually too ?
Let's i just want to buy one or 2 SNES games, will it be possible ?
can’t believe I have to wait until tomorrow (here in Kuwait, but UK account).
Stone me or anything, but I think F-Zero is a better, more fun game than F-Zero X on the N64.
Also, Kirby's Dream Course is underrated. It's an absolute masterpiece, and pretty much a one of a kind experience. It looks like a minigolf game or whatever, but it's actually a really challenging action-puzzle game with tons of content, really creative challenges, and a brilliant two-player mode.
@macaron35 You can’t buy them individually. They are only available with the online subscription.
Brawl Brothers seems to get the worst write-up here, but still gets 16th...
I've started playthroughs of LttP and SMW on my SNES mini, and Super Metroid on Wii U, so not sure how much use I'm going to get out of this initially.
(bothered by minor thing)
Wondering where that Stunt Race FX US date came from?
Was definitely playing that sometime the summer before.
There needs to be a Contra I was waiting for one on the Nes games but super Contra would be awesome for the Snes. But they released the Contra collection so that might not happen.
Lufia 1&2 please.
Good selection of games, and a great addition to the Switch. There's no denying that it's a shame it took them a year to get to this point, but I guess good things come to those who wait...
@nocdaes And really two and a half years since the Switch’s launch.
And yet, of all these, I'll be playing Breath of Fire first.
@Axelay71 I’m torn between NES and Super Nintendo. Super Nintendo has some all time classics: Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy IV, Chrono Trigger, ALttP, Super Mario RPG, Secret of Mana, Super Castlevania IV, Super Metroid, DKC trilogy, Turtles in Time ..., (not to mention the unforgettable soundtracks), but most of those series started on NES. NES has: all six original Mega Mans, three Castlevania titles, The Legend of Zelda, Faxanadu, Super Mario Bros. 1-3, Super Dodge Ball, The Double Dragon trilogy, River City Ransom, Rad Racer, RC Pro-AM, Goonies II, Blaster Master, Willow, Contra, Metal Gear, Rygar, Punch-OUT! ...
They’re both so, so good, in their own way. I can’t choose between them. Also 3DS is up there too, as is Dreamcast and Playstation 2
@Antraxx777 Yeah, but that's not part of the online service.
@frogopus Lufia 2 just for that legendary soundtrack
If I bothered to subscribe to their service and if they don't do a painful dripfeed, I'd grab Demon's Crest and Breath of Fire. One I never finished and one I've never played.
Not interested in some of these. I don't like Dreamland 3 and most of these I've got on the SNES Classic.
Super Metroid
@MysticalOS I agree! The top 3 here are all excellent contenders for the top spot in my opinion. Zelda games usually come out on top in my book though.
Puyo Puyo 2 and Breath of Fire should be higher.
@OorWullie Yoshi's Island is a Takashi Tezuka game.
@Yosher Only because they didn't put a fraction of the NES' shining stars, underrated gems and the plain ol' good ones on their service. shakes head The NES library is every bit as amazing as the SNES' library.
Breath of fire number 19? What a terrible list
Be playing my first and favourite zelda first. A Link to the past.
@akennelley1 Yeah, Link's Awakening is amazing!
@Tempestryke Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to diss the NES library, I know it has amazing games. I was mostly talking from a multiplayer point of view, hence why I said ''online NES''.
@Yosher Sorry Yosher. I know you weren't, I was trying to commiserate with you. They botched it miserably.
I played a Link to the Past couple months ago.... wasn't quite as good as the game I remembered as a 14 years old. There were few instances where hidden key items essential to proceed are not signposted at all and could have someone walking around Hyrule in circles for days if they don't stumble across them. Really enjoyed it although I played Minish Cap again immediately LttP after and actually preferred that to ALttP. Think its time for people to accept Super Metroid is the REAL greatest Snes game EVER. It really is as fresh as the day it was released.
@sketchturner I didn't even beat it once, I guess it's time hahaha
Mario World: "the apex of 16 bit platforming"
um, just because Diddy's Kong Quest isn't here doesn't mean you get to say these lies out loud
@Antraxx777
Hey I agree for me the whole 16 bit era is stuff of legend. From the Neo, Mega, PC Engine, Snes, but the SNES just edges it.
Yoshi's Island is the pinnacle of 2D platformers. So glad i can play it on the switch
Super ghouls n ghosts, Starfox and Mario Kart are going to be the first that i'm playing.
Finally some good games.
Does anyone know how big this update is going to be? I'm at sea for the next month so limited to just my mobile data when we are close enough to the shore. Thanks.
Hoping we get n64 titles next next year
Not the order I would rate them.
Are you all aware that if you have 7 friends you can get Switch Online for less than £4/year? Never understood people complaining about the cost.
@VR32X The japanese games are here: https://topics.nintendo.co.jp/export/sites/nintendo_topics/images/article_img/00001737_01.jpg I don't remember any of my katakana or hiragana sadly.
I just deleted the Japanese Famicom app today, I never really used it, and it was a bit of a faff to install (making all my news channels contain Japanese posts), so not going to bother with the Super Famicom one.
The first game I want to play is Waiting for an International Release
Breath of Fire on the 19th place?! That's one of the best classic rpgs, way better than FF games of that time!
I was hoping for either Mario RPG, Earthbound, Secret of Mana or Chrono Trigger... I have 3 of these on the Snes Classic, but it simply ain't portable and with the length of the cord, simply not playable in the setup of my living room....
@Wexter but what's left? the death of virtual console has companies releasing retro collections, we might not even get mario rpg cause square is involved. kirby super star, earthbound, and donkey kong country i guess.
I had all these games as a kid, Brawlbrothers was the ugliest box on my shelf!
Super Metroid, I am going to play the whole game again, probably won't target speed running it, I just want to play it again for the first time in a little while. Its hard to pick a favourite game because it depends on mood, but Super Metroid is simply incredible and it or Fez grab the mantle for me.
Super Metroid not being at number 1 invalidates this list. 😁
I'm just happy I can play it on a portable system now where the screen won't be tiny and the sound won't be ridiculously quiet. A system that isn't a laptop anyway.
0/10 Pilotwings is 13th.
I can't tell the happiness I have from yesterday. I think the madness when in a year we will probably have in our switch games such as:
DKC 1,2,3
Secret Of Mana
NBA Jam
Earthbound
NBA Live
Doom
Wolfenstein
Chrono Trigger
Final Fight
and lot more diamonds...
Come on Nintendo until next September give us 40-50 SNES games and announce N64 games on the 5th of September 2020.
@jco83 right, their article tells the UK what time, but for the US it's just "the 5th." Cool.
I wonder what the games are like played with the pro controller, there is a dongle you can buy that allows to plug Gamecube and controllers with access to controllers that have support like with the snes controllers from the mini classic into the device and it works well. Youtubers like them when they have reviewed them. I'm looking forward in playing Pilot Wings, Mario World Super Mario Kart.
If it's the NTSC version of Mario Kart in this lot, the CPU karts don't actually cheat/rubber band against you - if you're good enough you can amass a whopping lead, and even lap them (but they will rubber band against each other, oddly). It was the weirdly "optimised" PAL version that saw them get a bit cheaty at times
Super EDF will always have a special place in my heart because it was my first shmup, so I was pleasantly surprised to see it in the first wave.
Just do yourselves a favor and don't use the Laser. It's utter garbage. There's some weapons (Grenade, Explode, Atomic) that are tricky to use but can be worthwhile, but the Laser's not easy to use and not strong enough to bother with.
@Balta666 how can you judge what places where if you havent played most?
@TryToBeHopeful Thanks!
These SNES games is still not available on eShop.
@Ventilator I’m getting frustrated too. I keep updating my NES app and checking the eShop, and nothing.
When are they out??
Are they all 60hrz??
@antonio2244 Even better if they include the original Diddy Kong Racing!
Finally, the NSO is worth something!
I already have a SNES Classic so this does nothing for me.
Hoping Actraiser turns up sooner rather than later.
Hopefully they get some licensed games in here, and Chrono Trigger! but also, how about some Tetris Vs. Dr. Mario?
A Link to the Past is my favorite SNES game.
But honestly you can re-organize those top 3 in any order and it'd be perfect still.
With Breath of the Wild and Breath of Fire on the same system...you could call it Breath of the Wild Fire.
@Likethepear I have that and some of these games on my New 3DS, I'm sill super glad that I can just bring this SNES collection wherever and even play with my friends online.
@VR32X Yes. I also checked if there is a separate SNES app, but nothing.
Hoping for :
Super Ninja Boy
Congos Caper
NBA Jam
Goof Troop
Final Fight
Shadowrun
Tmnt Turtles in time
@Tyranexx I mean its easily interchangeable with the top 3, I'd say super metroid should be #1.
Ok, so exactly when does it drop?
Been checking the app all day long, NOTHINGNESS 🤔⏳🔜?
@Wexter Reeeeeally hasn't aged that well
@-Oliver-Rey- i can rank the ones I played and the rest does not matter (p.s: it was a joke)
Stunt Race FX has one of my favorite SNES soundtracks ever.
@Jackowackohoward am glad I've got that on the snes mini😊
Super Tennis!
They need to put undercover cops on it. One of the best beatemups on snes
I think it's amazing that people are going to experience Demon's Crest, especially since this release fixes two of the game's biggest flaws- namely it's insanely limited release at launch, and the fact that you can use save states to "save" the game when you need to do something else. Demon's Crest is a fairly long game, yet for some insane reason Capcom didn't include a save option, only a woefully inadequate password.
I’m so excited to play the SNES version of Yoshi’s Island again! This is so good I cannot wait for the likes of Donkey Kong Country to appear, I’m genuinely delighted.
its too bad that Nintendo forgot to include RPGs in the lineup. I hated Breath of Fire when I tried it, and that's the only option here
Just SNES games!! Who needs mini versions of consoles!!! Be tomorrow already
ALttP is one of the best Zelda games, but for me Super Metroid will always be the best game of the 16-bit era. It holds up today better than the many modern games that try to copy its formula.
All in all though, this initial lineup has far more value than the NES one has delivered over the course of a year. I suppose that's a testament to how brilliant the SNES library was.
@RunGMhx Secret of Mana is on the Mana Collection.
@NotoriousWhiz I think you are unlikely to see any of those games since they aren’t Nintendo developed/published. I realise there a few non Nintendo games on here but most are from defunct firms such as Jaleco, Human and Tonkin House so rights will be cheap.
@Crono1973 Yes I know, so it's unlikely that we'll see it in NSO, while I was tempted by the mana collection the price as of now (50$CAD) kind of turn me down as I'm mostly interested in the Snes game...
As a matter of fact I think what I need is more like a good old school RPG as I find new one to too complex for the commitment I,m welling to make...
@Quarth you can buy it on eBay from me....
@Bunkerneath They have kinda retrospectively changed lylat wars and starwing to starfox.
Like others said, I'm going for Breath of Fire. I liked Breath of Fire II and always meant to get around to the first game, so this is quite convenient.
First up will be Super Metroid for sure, followed by Super Mario World. Then, bust out the 2 player Super Tennis and lose hours to it again!
The game/series I want most of all ok this service is Donkey Kong Country! You can never have enough DK.
@ancientlii I can name 10+ off the top of my head. Sparkster, DKC (1/2/3), Uniracers, Super R-Type, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Evermore (which was not in the Mana Collection), Blackthorne, Terranigma, Cybernator, Axelay, Ogre Battle, Lufia/Lufia II, etc. It really comes down to what games fit this niche of a release and which ones don't make sense to add in compilation packs. And at the end of the day this service is great to give exposure to lesser-known SNES games people would not go out and buy digitally or in a collection otherwise, like Cybernator or Terranigma because unless you are a hardcore SNES fan you would not know about them.
They are not a Final Fantasy VI or Earthbound which are considered classics and most gamers know about. Despite how good games like Terranigma are people just don't know they exist or would care if they show up on Steam or the eShop. But, they would try it out of curiosity if it was on the Nintendo Online App.
Over 160 comments and this is only the 2nd one begging for ActRaiser? Okay, then.
So these SNES games ...do they have online play with voice chat?
Act raiser would be great! Also, how about UN squadron, Super Star Wars collection, Axelay, Mystical Ninja, Gradius III and Zombies ate my neighbours? Aaah..childhood memories 😃
This is a very solid start. I really hope the Gaia trilogy will be released this time. None of those games were on the virtual console.
I was excited when I read the headline, then looking through the list realised that I've played through the ones I was interested in playing again very recently on 3DS - Super Metroid and ALTTP only a month or so ago. It's a good step toward making the online pass a worthwhile deal, but not for me quite yet.
@MrMetroid Haha, fair enough!
Unpopular opinion: The OG Super Mario Kart kinda sucks.
Amusingly the most interesting part of Breath of Fire's inclusion here might not be it's relevance as a game of it's own standing but rather the fact that the very first wave of games for the SNES app will include any jRPG at all.
While it's no promise for us to expect much from the future, it does mean that RPG is a genre we technically - can - potentially expect more from the future. This would be a stark contrast to the current offerings on the NES app where RPGs are almost inexistant thus far.
@Wexter honestly, the NES app was so bereft of RPGs that it's very much a pleasant surprise that we're seeing one straight from the first batch of the SNES app!
That does leave me hope of seeing even more as time goes on.
Amazing list, just waiting for the games to me live. Now gives us Super Mario RPG!!
@Dr_Lugae I've played both and feel the original didn't age well but on the other hand it's nonetheless very promising that the very first wave of SNES games includes any RPGs !
-starts petition for GameboyAdvance- I want every single rpg castlevania
@Cotillion honestly I'm amazed by this lineup. It's a stark contrasts than what was shown on the NES app. Even the initial wave on NES felt somewhat too be desired as it seemed to be primarily platformers or arcade-styled games exclusively and further into most of the app's history thus far.
The selection on this initial SNES offerings is a sharp contrast, especially on the platformer side of things with both Super Mario World and Yoshi's Island from the get go.
And that's not mentioning other games from genres with meaty play time such as Link's Awakening but also Super Metroid and even a rpg like Breath of Fire. That we're even getting a true rpg at all in the first wave has me very hopefull for the future of the app!
@HeroponRiki their not going to release all the hits at once. That would be a bad business idea.
@Spoony_Tech Most definitely, while the first one isn't perfect it's still a great classic RPG, especially for a list of 20 games lacking RPG's unless you count Zelda which some do and some don't. I do kind of wish it was Breath of Fire 2 .
Waiting for Kirby Super Star!!!!! Earthbound too! Give me HAL games Nintendo, lol
@taeles Yeah! The Switch in handheld mode is already kind of a giant GBA!
@BoFiS I love the Tetris + Dr Mario combo on SNES! But they would probably need to re-license Tetris from the Tetris Company.
Same for Tetris Attack. I wonder if they could port over Panel de Pon instead?
I jumped on the band wagon and renewed my membership, I've never played yoshis island so looking forward to that but zelda is my priority!
I was surprised at some of the deep cuts on the list for launch. It's a really nice balance of the uber popular games and some lesser known gems.
When can I download it? I keep checking the eShop!!! And I wish I could play Super Famicom Wars on my Switch!!!!
Created an account just to say your low ranking of Breath of Fire is bollocks. The game is great fun and did things other RPGs weren't really doing at the time (like night/daytime and dragon / mutant form transforming and every character having special unique skills inside and outside battle), and the sequel is even better!
@frogopus Yes! Especially Lufia 2!
Don't know where all in the world everyone is from here, but I'm EST 5:21pm here in the US and am not seeing it. Has anyone seen it yet?
Super metriod will be first for me, i hope that Mario and the Legend of the Seven Stars gets added soon, it would also be amazingly outstanding if TMNT 4 got added as well
Super Metroid!!!
@Dang69 still waiting... Have the day off and was looking forward to diving in to Yoshi's Island before my wife and kid got home. Oh well.
@Toshiro_Baloney midnight UK time apparently
Had a look @ Nintendo Life's twitter. Apparently SNES Online drops at midnight. I wondered why they announced it for the 6th in France and Japan
Are you guys seriously doubting Earthbound will be coming to the Switch?
Lol. You guys have anxiety. Anyhoo, imagine the Direct when they reveal Mother 3 finally available for download...along with Earthbound Beginnings and Earthbound available on the NSO.
Come on. They have so many options it's crazy.
6th of september here in greece and no snes games yet.
I guess it's too damn hard for ninty...
Looks like we have another hour to wait till they go live... Off to bed for me here in the UK, will have to wait till friday evening to play them.
Maybe it will be 9:00pm PST (midnight EST)? Otherwise, I’ll have to check it out on Friday.
@Dang69 @Toshiro_Baloney nothing 😐 . Don’t think today was the right info.
Man, so many memories with those games.
Wow.. What a wave of nostalgia right there!! These all came out more or less when I was starting secondary school!
Not a bad line up but with the mini SNES already out there and the New 3DS Virtual Console too, they had to deliver a distinguished line-up. Super Mario World was the SNES flagship game so it was a given. Joe & Mac is a clear example of the good classic stuff we've been waiting for. F-Zero was long-called for a Super Puyo Puyo was a great surprise! Hopefully Nintendo will finally roll out some previous Japan-only games, since the catalogue is huge.
My personal hopes for more titles are:
Parodius
Mystical Ninja Goemon
Chrono Trigger
Donkey Kong Country
Killer Instinct
Earthbound/Mother 3
Anyway, hopefully they can then hurry up with the N64 titles and really start indulging the fans.
I wish they had included the Japanese version of Brawl Brothers instead, which didn't have any of the unnecessary maze aspects added to the U.S. version.
Nintendo......Did you forget something?
Give me DKC 2 or give me death
I would like Final Fight, TMNT, Donkey Kong Country, Earthbound, and Final Fantasy 6, but I’m grateful.
@akennelley1 Agreed, Link's Awakening is much more enjoyable.
What’s going on lol I’ve been waiting for this and we don’t have it!
I signed up to ask when they will be available, lol. Glad I'm not the only one it hasn't shown up for yet..
This waiting all day and night sucks
Was it all a dream? Did Nintendo pull a fast one?
Come on Nintendo, I have work tomorrow, I just need one game of Super Tennis then I can go to bed happy!
Just downloaded the Super Famicom app from JP eshop!
I want to play them now!
Never mind it’s here!!
Wouldn't be the first time Nintendo has kept me waiting. I don't mind if they say "It'll be available this day at this time." But Nintendo... don't say it'll be available on this day and then wait until the day is almost over. I was looking forward to this after getting off work! 😆
It's good the Direct was positive overall and we got a big old pile of SNES games like we wanted because Switch (and the fanbase) is about to have a Fit, for real: https://twitter.com/NintendoAmerica/status/1169731934035070979
Man it looks cool!
For the record, I've been loving the NES games, and wasn't dying for SNES games like many, but the 20 games is a nice surprise and a good set!
Haha, can't wait to see the reaction to the fitness ring thing.
Oh man I was hoping the games were full screen on the switch 😔
I mostly want the SNES era JRPGs like Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy and Mario RPG. Hope those arrive eventually.
@VR32X It's online now and a separate app which is great..

It's great, the games feel faster than on the mini, particularly Mario Kart or is it me?
Oh...Super Mario RPG...
silent tears
We're live, ladies and gents...
It’s here...downloaded and playing suer Metroid 🤤🤤🤤
I'll finally get to play Super tennis and stunt race FX. And super EDF.
@HeroponRiki I absolutely love my SNES classic. Love love love it!
Having these games on switch does add a little convenience. Though I prefer TV anyway.
Wow, Donald Trump on the cover of Super Soccer!
it is about time that we got this. it is a decent collection for the first go round. Cant wait for the next batch, hoping for Uniracers at some point.
The mini review on Super Ghouls n’ Ghost is spot on. Good job. I love that game
Brawl Bros. is an underrated beat em up. In fact you can unlock the Super Famicom version and its better to play that one since it removes the maze sections.
Dun da-da-dun da-da-dun-DUN!
-singing along to super ghoulsnghosts-
I'll finally get to play Super Tennis, Stunt Race FX, and Super EDF. They weren't on my list but I'll finally be able to give them a go.
I booted EDF expecting wanton destruction and giant insects, but I guess it's not the same series or it evolved over time.
I know it's a long shot and most likely not gonna happen, but if one day we get Donkey Country 2 on there...
Donkey kong games whould be perfect.
@CurryPowderKeg79 I got starfox 2 on mini snes. Am the bomb on the first one 💣
@CurryPowderKeg79 I hope so as well so can play handheld 👍 pow
@Savino everyone's list will differ but link to the past is the best 🔗
@Judgedean relax they are my here nintendoid
For me:
Legend of Zelda Link to the Past, Super Mario World, F-Zero, Super Mario Kart, Pilotwings, and EDF are the best games on here. The rest just don't click with me(puzzlers, metroidvanias, sports, and Turn based RPGs)/I didn't grow up with them.
Excellent compliment to the Contra, Castlevania, Megaman X, Capcom Beatemupbundle, Ultra Street Fighter II and Secret of Mana Collections.
Hoping within a year to have most of my other faves on this app: Donkey Kong Country trilogy, Super Punchout, Kirby Superstar, Illusion of Gaia, EVO Search for Eden, Star Fox 2, Strike Gunner STG, Gradius III, Sim City, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, and Turtles in Time(unlikely).
You know, im surprised at the hate that BoF gets. Its definitely a bit rough around the edges, but there are some pretty cool things that it did. The Fishing mechanic (while too simple) was nice (and would be branched out later), and combining characters was cool. Its not perfect, but i dont think it deserves the hate it gets.
Stunt Race FX as number 11, that's pretty good.
Though Andre Segers of GameXplain would demand it should be number 1.
Now then, let’s not pretend Star Fox is actually an enjoyable experience in any other way than aural.
Seeing what Super FX could do was impressive at the time, but it’s little more than a passable gaming experience these days.
An historical curiosity for sure, but fun to play? Neigh.
And yes, I played this for hours on end back in the day, it was not fun then and it is not fun now.
StarFox 64 on the other hand is brillo, bring on the Nintendo 64 emulation.
The only two games in this release that stand as truly timeless are Yoshi’s Island and Zelda. Metroid and Mario are still good, but the artistry of Yoshi and Zelda make them immune to the passing of time.
You must be a real clown to put Breath of Fire after so many stupid games that are on the service.
@CurryPowderKeg79 You legend, looks like we're getting Star Fox 2 after all!
@sketchturner, thanks for the laugh. I needed that.
Super tennis still holds up fantastically. It’s so much better than mario tennis for switch.
I really shold play yoshis island also. I never had it as a kid.
Oh c'mon, that's a criminally low rank for Kirby Super Star. I mean, Super Ghouls and Ghosts placed higher? Really?....
All quibbling aside, the SNES is loaded with good games and the service will only get better in the future.
Is Star Fox 2 at 20th so much worse than the original, which is ranked 7th? I find the original really tough to get into now, it's aged so badly.
If you enjoy Super Tennis, I recommend downloading the Japanese SNES app which has Family Tennis in its place. It's basically the same game but with better graphics and more options.
Pretty harsh for BoF2. I've always heard it's much better than the first one. Surprised Super Star is so low, too.
@nessisonett Now where's Earthbound?
Totally agree with the list. I played Super Tennis almost everyday when I was a child. I'm glad it made the top 10.
@Quarth We will get Super Castlevania IV just like how we got Crystalis.
I prefer Super Family Tennis (Smash Tennis is Europe) to Super Tennis. I wish they'd include that on the American SNES app too, or better yet, sell it on eShop for $8 so I can still play it when my online subscription ends.
@retro_player_22 Yeah, maybe. Hope so!
Breath of Fire and Breath of Fire II deserve better than this. Especially since there are no other RPGs on the service yet.
God I almost didn't look at this list because I knew it would just make me mad, but I did and yeah... Breath of Fire 2 at rank 23 below stuff like Super Soccer & Stunt Race? Super Metroid worse than Mario World? Deep breaths...
Kirby Super Star is probs my favourite out of all these followed by Super Metroid! ☆
@Expa0 Smw is definitely number 2 for me! Completed that game at least 5 times since I was little
Breath of Fire 2 deserves to be at least in the top 2. This list is beyond bad.
BoF 2 has an amazing deep story, has a near perfect battle system, has decent graphics (for a SNES game), it plays really good. To me it's the number 2 on the SNES.
@Quarth It's in Castlevania Anniversary Collection
@sanderev
It does however have an awful official translation, which carried over to the GBA version.
I agree that it's a superb game but if you really want to enjoy it you should check out an unofficial fan translation.
@RupeeClock Maybe, but that doesn't excuse the hate the game is getting from Nintendolife. If it had "Nintendo" on the box it would be higher.
But for me, it's the one game on this list I played the most. And almost the game I liked the most as well.
Nice ranking, I have to agree with all of it. Afterall, I already own the ~coughs~ ~coughs~ VC versions ~coughs~ ~coughs~ of the first 5 games on my 3DS not without reason.
@Jackowackohoward I only hope they do a collection instead. I'd even buy a physical version.
@OorWullie
Can you w/ me your address? I’ll send soap over to wash your mouth out. 🧼 😉
I'll never understand the love Super Mario Kart gets. Later version are amazing... but the OG on the SNES? Not so much.
It seems odd that you'd rank a game "only for diehard fans of the genre" one spot ahead of a game that's "well worth a look."
