Release Date: 5th Sep 2019 (USA) / 5th Sep 2019 (UK/EU)

Not since Scott Pilgrim vs The World was released nine years ago have we played such an entertaining, satisfying beat ‘em up. Whether you’re playing alone or teaming up with a friend in co-op mode, River City Girls is a visually superb, aurally fantastic, out-and-out love letter to the genre. Fans of River City Ransom and other Kunio-kun games will adore how it respects the past but makes it relevant today, while those new to the series will simply find a hugely enjoyable and infectiously cheerful scrapper.

Publisher: Chucklefish / Developer: Lunar Ray Games
Release Date: 4th Jun 2019 (USA) / 4th Jun 2019 (UK/EU)

Gorgeous to behold and equally delightful to play, Timespinner is yet another top-notch Metroidvania on Switch. A lack of tough exploration challenges and an under-utilised time-freeze gimmick aside, it succeeds in using the popular genre as a vehicle for a genuinely intriguing science-fantasy tale that will motivate players to explore every inch of its fantastic pixel-art world.

Creature In The Well (Switch eShop)Creature In The Well (Switch eShop)
Publisher: Flight School Studio / Developer: Flight School Studio
Release Date: 6th Sep 2019 (USA) / 6th Sep 2019 (UK/EU)

If you’ve ever been fond of the classic game of pinball, then Creature in the Well may well be up your street. A curious twist on the traditional dungeon-crawler with a sword-based, pinball-esque ball mechanic (steady), you're tasked with restoring power to a huge facility while a ‘Creature’ lies in wait, constantly watching over your progress, periodically challenging you to puzzle-based fights. It all looks fantastic, with the comic book artwork really bringing the characters and environments to life. Pacing issues aside, it's one of the most unique games of 2019 and well worth a look if it passed you by back in September.

Publisher: Blitworks / Developer: Seba Games Dev
Release Date: 26th Sep 2019 (USA) / 26th Sep 2019 (UK/EU)

Who says the beat 'em up is dead? Fight’N Rage is one of the must-own action games on Nintendo’s console. Its surprisingly deep and satisfyingly weighty combat engine combined with three strong and varied player characters and a host of cleverly-designed enemies elevate it above the usual button-mashing experience perhaps expected of entries in this genre. It’s got an excellent arcade mode that branches off in various directions as you make your way to the final boss battle, as well as a ton of unlockable modes and extras to keep you coming back for more. Whether you’re a learned fan of old-school beat ’em ups or you just like pummelling the life out of mutant punk pussycats and monkeys dressed as Bruce Lee, you owe it to yourself to experience what Sebastian Garcia has created here; it’s easily one of the best beat’em ups we’ve played.

City of Brass (Switch eShop)City of Brass (Switch eShop)
Publisher: Uppercut Games / Developer: Uppercut Games Pty Ltd
Release Date: 8th Feb 2019 (USA) / 8th Feb 2019 (UK/EU)

This one tended to polarise critics when it launched, but we absolutely love the first-person roguelike action it serves up. While some of its procedural generation can sometimes make for an unnecessarily challenging experience, City of Brass more than makes up for it with the sheer creativity you can have exploring its Arabian Nights-themed maps. With genii to imbue you with wacky powers and the ever-tantalising need to collect more gold (as well the option to compete with others via the leaderboards), Uppercut Games has produced one of the most entertaining roguelikes to swing onto Nintendo Switch. And you can throw ghost chickens. What more do you need?

Publisher: Mixtvision / Developer: Okomotive
Release Date: 18th Aug 2019 (USA) / 18th Aug 2019 (UK/EU)

Without saying a word, FAR: Lone Sails conveys a poignant tale of hope and perseverance, masterfully balancing style with substance for an experience that feels every bit as sublime as it looks. Sure, you could grumble about the its relative shortness, the occasionally obtuse puzzles and the very, very minor control issues, but these problems dissolve away once you're invested in the journey. We highly recommend that you give this a spin.

Rolling Gunner (Switch eShop)Rolling Gunner (Switch eShop)
Publisher: mebius. / Developer: mebius.
Release Date: 20th Jun 2019 (USA) / 20th Jun 2019 (UK/EU)

Directed by ex-Cave dev Daisuke Koizumi, who worked on Deathsmiles 2 and Dondonpachi, amongst other great entries in the genre, Rolling Gunner has pedigree, and it shows; this is one of the most addictive, accessible and downright fun shmups currently available on Nintendo’s system. It plays beautifully, looks amazing and is overall one of the most engaging side-scrolling shmups released in recent memory. Kudos to Mebius for creating an entry in the genre that does so much to welcome newcomers into the fold whilst at the same time offering a blisteringly difficult challenge with plenty of hidden depth for hardened warriors looking for their next shooter addiction.

The Touryst (Switch eShop)

The Touryst (Switch eShop)The Touryst (Switch eShop)
Publisher: Shin'en Multimedia / Developer: Shin'en Multimedia
Release Date: 21st Nov 2019 (USA) / 21st Nov 2019 (UK/EU)

The Touryst snuck out onto the eShop recently, but arguably got buried in the flood as the Cyber Deals sale took over for a week or so. If it did pass you by we highly recommend heading to the Switch eShop this instant. The Touryst is a joyous little adventure that sinks its blocky hooks into you and doesn't let go until it's done. It's got a perfect balance of atmospheric puzzling, leisurely exploring and minigame madness that'll keep you thoroughly entertained from start to finish, and its collection of tiny little voxel islands are a joy to discover, bursting with surprises to uncover and presented in a truly dazzling art-style that's achieved whilst performing flawlessly on Nintendo's console. The puzzles might not be the most taxing you'll ever come across and you'll blow through the whole thing pretty quickly, but overall this is a top-notch – and perfectly priced – little gem.

A fine bunch of games, all of which scored an 8 or 9 out of 10 from Nintendo Life. Let us know which ones you've played or any other 2019 games you feel deserve some more time in the spotlight with a comment below.
