5. Sayonara Wild Hearts (Switch eShop)

Not all games need to be epic slogs, you know! The beautifully brief rhythm journey that is Sayonara Wild Hearts was a genuine breath of fresh air in the deluge of larger games to hit the Switch this year. Channelling elements of surreal Dreamcast classic REZ (along with other beat-based gems), it was a joyous and unexpectedly personal journey that resonated with a good bunch of the team, and had the second best video game motorcycle sequences on Switch this year (you'll have to skip down the list to see the game with the best).

If you missed out on this one, be sure to hunt it down in the new year for a short and sweet experience that'll help you kick off 2020 in the right mindset.

4. Luigi's Mansion 3 (Switch)

Obviously, it wasn't like we thought Luigi's Mansion 3 was going to be bad. From what we'd seen and played before release, all indications pointed to it being a charming continuation of the green plumber's adventures through haunted houses. What was surprising, however, was just how brilliant and polished the end result turned out to be. It looks beautiful, boasts some excellent multiplayer and co-op options and ended up delivering the finest entry in Luigi's ghost-sucking trilogy, and one of the very best games of the year on any platform.

We shouldn't have been surprised, of course, but somehow we still were. Perhaps we mistakenly thought we had the measure of it pre-release - ah yes, here comes another totally pleasant first-party Switch game. Luigi's Mansion 3 was so much more, though; an excellent ectoplasmic adventure utterly dripping in charm. This polterpup is worth bustin' out at any time of year, not just for Halloween.

3. Pokémon Sword and Shield (Switch)

It might have cleaved internet opinion right down the middle, but Team NL has had an absolute blast exploring the Galar region in Pokémon Sword and Shield. Encountering Pokéfaces old and new has been a constant joy and while it's not groundbreaking in the visual department, many of us were struck by just how beautiful the game looks on Switch, especially after so many years being trapped on small handheld screens. Yes, Switch is still a handheld, but you'll be hard-pressed to count the pixels on the jaggies here.

While the game is not without faults, we've found getting reacquainted with the wonderful world of Pokémon a real pleasure with Sword and Shield, and Switch is the perfect console for it. We'd encourage anyone who's been sitting on the fence to get stuck in with Gen 8 - Pokémon Sword and Shield is a wholesome and satisfying treat.

Also, Sobble is all right, actually. He's no Grookey, of course, but he's all right.

2. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (Switch)

From the moment we first glimpsed this remake and its cute diorama aesthetic, we knew this was shaping up to be a special return to Koholint Island, and thankfully developer Grezzo didn't disappoint. Taking the Game Boy original and lavishing it with love and a beautiful new lick of paint, some may have found the game design a little old-fashioned, and the framerate dips affected a handful of the team more than others, but overall we found this to be a sparkling return for a handheld classic. The original game carries many treasured memories, and the fact that Link's Awakening on Switch managed to recapture that magic meant it was a shoo-in on this list. Not our favourite game of 2019, but a damn fine one.

So here we are! Our absolute favourite game of last year - the Nintendo Life Editorial Game of the Year 2019 is (drum roll)...

1. Astral Chain (Switch)

Surprised? Well, you really shouldn't be. Combining all the style and combat know-how we've come to expect from veteran developer PlatinumGames, Astral Chain combined Bayonetta-style kick-ass-ery with a dose of neon dystopian detective noir and threw in big demon-dog things on chains for good measure.

This Switch exclusive has everything you could want from a third-person action game, providing all the depth veterans could hope for while also managing to be the developer's most accessible title yet. Genre newbies are just as able to enjoy the ride as the hardcore Platinum players - and what a ride it is! From the first moments speeding though a tunnel on a motorcycle to the very final battle, it never lets up and is never less than effortlessly cool.

In a year with plenty of great games on the platform, Astral Chain still managed to live up to our highest expectations and shine brightly in the crowd. If it somehow passed you by, you owe it to yourself to catch up on this.
