Stranger Things

One of the world's leading streaming services with millions of subscribers and a vast archive of exclusive content, it's little wonder that Netflix has become a major player in the realm of entertainment. Home to shows like Stranger Things and Black Mirror – as well as movies such The Irishman and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs – Netflix is arguably one of the leading lights in the world of streaming content.

However, its list of rivals is growing, with Disney Plus and Apple TV Plus joining the likes of Amazon Prime Video and Hulu in the battle for your living room. What could possibly give it the edge? A Nintendo Switch app, of course...

Is Netflix Coming To Nintendo Switch?

Back when the Switch launched in 2017, Netflix on Switch seemed a sure thing – it was already available on the Wii, Wii U and 3DS, after all. Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Aime said services from Netflix, Hulu and Amazon would "come in time", but we're now in 2019 and there's still no sign of Netflix on Switch.

Also in 2017, it was rumoured that the Netflix for Switch app was ready, and all that was required was Nintendo's consent to publish it on the eShop. A retail leak a year later seemed to confirm that Netflix was on the way, alongside a YouTube app (the latter of which did become available). Also in 2018, Reggie revealed that conversations between Netflix and Nintendo were "on-going".

Since then, we've heard nothing more – although ironically, many of Netflix's properties are coming to Switch in video game form, thanks to titles based on Narcos, Stranger Things and The Dark Crystal.

Given that Switch is based on the same tech as the Nvidia Shield TV, actually getting the app onto the console should be easy – but there are clearly other forces at work here which are, for some reason, holding the release back.

Netflix Nintendo Switch Release Date

With no solid word from either Netflix or Nintendo about when the app is coming, this question is sadly impossible to answer with any degree of certainty – but the fact that we've heard multiple rumours regarding Netflix on Switch means that it could potentially happen at any points.

Needless to say, we'll update this guide when we have any fresh information.
