Pokémon GO has held its first global premium event – a paid, ticketed event that could be played anywhere in the world, giving exclusive early and easy access to the legendary Pokémon Regigas and a raft of other perks.
Tickets are no longer on sale and the event has concluded in all time-zones.
Our guide covers a full walkthrough for the ‘A Colossal Discovery’ special research quest for those who haven't yet completed the research quest, as well recap of all event details. We also cover where Regigigas will be available, post-event
How to Get Regigigas in Pokémon GO – ‘A Colossal Discovery’ Walkthrough
With the premium and free events now concluded in all timezones, you may still need to know the contents of upcoming steps (assuming you haven't yet finished the quest). We have updated this guide to reflect quest changes post-event - so you won't have to rely on the now non-existent Regi raids and increased rock, ice and steel-type Pokémon spawns.
Step 1/4

Post Event: Win 3 Raids During Event: Catch a Regirock, Regice, or Registeel from a raid |

During the event hours, Regirock, Regice and Registeel were found in high numbers as five-star raids and players had to additionally catch and evolve a number of Pokémon at each stage. Post-event, the requirement was changed to three raids of any level/Pokémon and 49 of any type of Pokémon. The specific type evolution task remained the same.

How else can I get Regigigas now that the event is over?
Significantly, Niantic have confirmed that Regigigas will start appearing in the high-difficulty EX Raid series ‘in November’, meaning that there is still a free route to obtaining the Pokémon (though the premium pass gets your access sooner and far more easily considering the difficulty and selection criteria of EX Raids).
When Were Tickets for ‘A Colossal Discovery’ Available?
Once the pass was purchased, players had to open Pokémon GO between Saturday, November 2 2019 from 11:00 to 19:00 local time to receive the ‘A Colossal Discovery’ Special Research quest. As with all Special Research quests, you can take as long as you want to complete the ’A Colossal Discovery’ story, though bear in mind that specific tasks may be more difficult as changes are made to the game through the year.
In their announcement blogpost, Niantic recommended "trying your best to complete the research on Saturday, November 2, 2019, from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. in your local time zone", "for an optimal gameplay experience".
How Much Did the ‘A Colossal Discovery’ Pass Cost and How Could I Buy It?
The ticket was priced at $7.99/£7.99 and for the first time, had to be purchased with real world currency (not the in-game currency – Pokécoins – which are partly available for free).
The tickets could be found in the in-game shop. In the main Poké-ball menu, players would hit ‘shop’ and scroll to find the ticket.
What Did ‘A Colossal Discovery’ Ticket Get You?
Pass Exclusive Pokémon Release: Regigigas
The headline attraction of the ‘A Colossal Discovery’ pass was the release of Sinnoh legendary Regigigas through a special research quest. This quest was similar to those for Mew, Celebi and Jirachi, aside from the fact that only those who purchase a pass could receive it.
Regigigas (#486) is a Normal-type Pokémon. Therefore its sole type-weakness are Fighting-type Pokémon. It is resistant to Ghost-type attacks.
‘A Colossal Discovery’ special research rewards
As with all story quests, players accumulated items, XP, stardust and Pokémon encounters at each stage of the quest. See our ‘A Colossal Discovery’ Walkthrough’ section for more details.
Additional Raid Passes for Participants
‘A Colossal Discovery’ participants could receive up to 10 free Raid Passes when spinning Gym photo-discs for a limited period (normal rules applied in that you can only carry one at a time, but the daily limit of one free pass per spin was relaxed).
Free Event Details – November 1 to November 4
To accompany the release of ‘A Colossal Discovery’, Niantic ran a commemorative event for all players, focused around the Regi-Trio that Regigigas is considered the ‘trio master’ of, from Friday, November 1 2019 at 13:00 to Monday, November 4 2019 at 13:00 PDT. This event had the following features:
- Regirock, Regice and Registeel in 5-Star Raids, and in shiny form for the first time.
- Certain Rock, Ice and Steel-type Pokémon hatching more frequently from eggs
- Release of Shiny Skarmory
- 2x incubator effectiveness

It's too bad relicanth is a regional and isn't gonna be a special spawn for an event like this as a result
I hope it will be released to all later, rather than locked behind a purchase only.
Pay to win is never nice to those trying to play free
@AndyRogan the article specified Regigigas will be available to free to play players as well, just not as easily obtained.
You’ve listed Registeel as Regice in the weakness section @kupocake
@Markiemania95 I think I must have written 'Regi' so many times I couldn't see this obvious mistake! Corrected and thanks!
@ShadJV Via EX Raids, I've never had an invite to one, nor seen one
@AndyRogan and isn’t that how many legendaries are available? I’ve not played Go much but even in my brief time with it I got to do an EX Raid. The point is they’re RNG to get access to. The paid quest here is an option to skip the grind and get immediate access to the Pokémon. It’d be a slap in the face to those players willing to pay to just later make the quest free for anybody. Like most things in this game, finding Regigigas is RNG, they’re just allowing people to skip the RNG for once for a small fee. The alternative would’ve been now allowing that option. Nothing here is inaccessible to other players, anyone that dedicated to the game should have plenty of Pokémon that are likely better than this anyways, if it’s competitive play you’re worried about. And if it’s catching them all, surely some legendaries took you just as long to find, it’s just one more out there.
@ShadJV Most legendaries are a monthly quest for completion of 7 daily tasks, or tier 5 raids that everyone can join.
EX raids are invite only which limits the number able to take part.
Mythical are usually a rare quest
There are reports that if you initiate the ticket purchase on Google Play Store, then back out, it will offer a £1 discount to try and secure the sale.
So you might be able to save a quid if you're so inclined.
I'm on the fence. I think the idea is cool but i don't care for the Raids. I guess i can go to NYC for the day to secure it but that's lame and i don't live near many EX Raid stops.I assume that they'll be monthly research options down the road to complete the quests.
@RickD That's how i named all my Reggies in Pokemon Omega Ruby.
@RupeeClock awesome, i'm going to do that.
I am not paying for an in-game event. It's just not gonna happen. I would pay for something like one of the convention/safari zone things if it was reasonably nearby, but there's no legitimate reason beyond greed that this is locked behind a paywall.
If this becomes the norm for events going forward, it might well be the end of Pokemon Go for me.
I'll pay money rarely, on occasion, if I really want something in the game, but this event changes all that.
@w00dm4n any quests in this event's research will change after the event for anything that won't be available as easily once it's over, same as how the Gofest special research unown quests would change.
@Heavyarms55 yeah for anyone who doesn't want to pay it's worthwhile to just wait for next summer when it's inevitably dropped in 5* raids alongside its shiny as part of the ultra bonus
Pokemon Go has really went to over the past months. Constant screw ups and problems and now paid tickets. You want this Pokemon? Pay 10 dollars and its yours! What a time to be alive. Money greed whereever you look in the videogame business.
I honestly play it a lot less than before. Most of my playmates stopped too... Its a shame that they really destroy the game.
@NINtendo242 it’ll probably sell really well too. Which will encourage them to put more Pokémon behind a paywall it will be interesting to see how well the pass sells.
Pokemon Go is great fun, gets my kids exercising... but I've never paid a dime and that won't change.
So if we never get Regigas, oh well.
i bought it, planned on going to NYC to make sure i completed it and now i'm going to a rural college town an hour from Pittsburgh.
@AndyRogan they said their are going to be regigigas raids at some point
I'm not paying money, but I was more than happy to go around Kyoto yesterday doing raids. I've never before been able to do back to back to back tier 5 raids with full groups like that! That was cool. No shinys but I did catch a shiny Drifloon the day before!
On another note stores were putting out "No Pokemon Go" signs because so many people we loitering playing the game. The no-fun police were out.
My wife and I each bought a pass. It was actually a lot of fun and well worth the $8 in our opinion. Getting invited to an EX raid is not THAT difficult. I believe you just have to beat any 5 star raid at an EX gym. This is pretty easy to do on wednesdays in any decent sized city. If you’re more rural I feel your pain. Pokémon Go is definitely not great if you don’t live near/in a city.
