Nintendo has shared a list of the top 15 most-downloaded eShop games of August 2019 in Europe, and there's a wonderful mix of games sitting right at the top.
The game on everyone's lips at the moment, Astral Chain, managed to make its way to fourth place (we already know it topped the UK physical charts this week) but top prize actually goes to a non-Nintendo game. Yes, this month's most-downloaded game was the super popular, world-dominating Minecraft.
Here's the full list. It's based on the number of Nintendo eShop downloads (so no physical sales) in European territories during the whole month:

Considering Astral Chain was only on sale for 2 days of August that's a great result.
Interesting that Doom 1 and 3 made the list, but not Doom 2.
I didn't download any of those last month, no. I got Astral Chain physically and already own six others though.

@JoakimZ I’d say DOOM 2 is just outside that Top 15, all three have been an ever present since release.
@JoakimZ People downloaded Doom 1. Saw they had to create an account. Then, heard that Doom 3 didn't have an account requirement, and bought that one.
That's my theory.
Good to see cuphead still up there. Hopefully MS will consider bringing over other games - cough cough Forza.

Actually didn't buy any games in August. First time this year I haven't bought games during a month.
Remedied that quickly in September with Spyro trilogy.
Chilling with that while finishing the last routes of Fire Emblem.
I love how even after 10+ years, minecraft keeps coming back. Feels like it fades out every couple years, then the new generation finds it and makes it big again

I own 9 of those and bought two of those (Astral Chain and Yugioh) in August.
Urban Trial Playground...? What the heck is that? Lol
Last game I downloaded I think was FFIX, though I'm tempted to grab FFVIII remaster, and there's a few others i'd like. Also want to see if we get any drops at the direct.

@JorisD 911 operator was seriously discounted. I think it was around $1 for the base game and a couple bucks for the complete game.
Kinda crazy that Mario Kart 8 is up there but no Smash? Though I do know Mario Kart 8 went on sale kinda recently, not sure when but I remember buying it. So maybe that gave it a bit of a bump... Either way, people love their Mario Kart.
