Here we are at the end of yet another week. The last few days brought us the inclusion of Dragon Quest's Hero in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the final major update for Splatoon 2, and a gas canister that has its very own profile on Wii Fit (just another ordinary week, then).
Now, though, it's time to relax and chat about our weekend gaming plans. As is tradition, the Nintendo Life team has done just that below and we'd love for you to get involved via our poll and comment sections below. Enjoy!

With the UK weather being so unpredictable at the moment, I won't be taking any chances this weekend. I'll be staying indoors and killing time with the delightful Forager, a game that has stolen my heart and simply won't give it back!
I also recently purchased the original DOOM trilogy on Switch, so I'll likely spend some time in the latter hours of the day blasting demons away in anticipation for DOOM Eternal later this year.

After struggling to track down a physical copy of Fire Emblem: Three Houses last weekend, this weekend my plan is to finally spend some quality time getting to know my new friends in the Blue Lions house. I’ll also be taking some time to familiarise myself with the Hero's moveset in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate while I wait for Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age – Definitive Edition to arrive on the Switch.
When I’m not playing either of these games, I expect to be returning to Hell in DOOM II and racing about in Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled. That’s it for me!

Another weekend blissfully spent in the Summer of Switch. No massive new games out this week but when you have such a deluxe backlog, this is hardly a problem. I will have my doses of Fire Emblem: Three Houses, The Messenger, Blazing Chrome, Fantasy Strike, Vasara Collection and an incredible gem by the name of Zombie Driver: Immortal Edition.
My game of the week goes to the unexpected release of Saboteur II: Avenging Angel. Many years before I even knew what a Metroid was, this superior ZX Spectrum sequel introduced me to the ‘Metroidvania’ genre and I have been a fan ever since. It is fondly familiar to find this game again, 34 years later on the ultimate games console. Wonder if I still know the building layout from memory...

This weekend, I think I’ll finally be picking up Fire Emblem: Three Houses. It’s a bit of a game drought for me right now, so it seems to be a good time to get into something new. I’ll also be plugging away at Dragon Quest Builders 2, of course - and I’ve been back on a GameCube kick as well, so I’m sure a few of those throwback titles will be making their way into my plans this weekend.
Gavin Lane, staff writer
This weekend I shall be continuing to explore the charms of Omega Labyrinth Life. The list of exclamation points on the ‘Manual’ menu has grown very long and I’m still getting tool tips popping up with new information after several hours with the game. First impressions? It’s certainly colourful and these girls sure have some unorthodox ways of tending a garden. I’ve got a multitude of bugs to shoo, seeds to sow and dungeons to crawl ahead of me, so look out for the review next week.

It might sound weird to some, but I actually wanted Super Mario Maker 2 for the story more than for the whole playing levels made by strangers and making them myself. I managed to 100% build the castle a couple of weeks back, but I never got around to completing all of Toad's jobs.
So, this weekend I'll use any free time doing just that - I don't think there are too many left to do now, but it's actually left me wanting more Nintendo-designed levels rather than custom ones. Perhaps I should pick up a copy of New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe at some point?
Zion Grassl, video producer
Well, this weekend is a tough one for me as I’ve got quite a bit of free time (for once) but I also have too many games on my docket. I’m still powering my way slowly through Fire Emblem: Three Houses with my team of Golden Deer! Although, I’ve been slacking on my playthrough of Earthbound too. So hopefully, I’ll be able to give Ness and his pals some attention too!
I also just picked up the physical bundle for Starlink on Switch, as the deal was too good to pass up. So maybe I’ll take a break from strategizing my units to play with some toys!

Just bought katana zero. Can't wait, it looks insane
I bought Doom 3 and am enjoying that so far. I can’t usually get on with FPS as they tend to give me a headache or make me feel sick but I’m not having that problem so far - maybe handheld is better than a TV/projector for that?
Also considering picking up a 2nd hand PS4 for Spider-Man, god of war and horizon zero dawn which all look amazing.
Smash Bros, Minecraft, FE Warriors and the CTR Nitro-Fueled Grand Prix for me!
Final Fantasy 7 and Mario Maker 2
Playing all 3 DOOM games and having a great time with them and just finished my latest level on Mario Maker 2, mixing elements form Mario 1, 3 and 64 and a giant NES controller YKP-SQT-0SG 😉
I picked up Starlink for just over a tenner at Argos and that game is actually really good, such a shame its toy to life business model put off so many including myself. The money is worth it for the Arwing model alone but as I said its actually a fun game too so I'll be spending some time with that
Despite all the crap it's getting the new CTR Prehistoric track is top quality, so playing that.
I wish mario kart or sonic racing gave me a free track every month, so quit your jibba jabba!
Fire Emblem Three Houses most likely. Possibly a splash of golf story for good measure.
Fire Emblem Three Houses of course! But took a break to go outside and do the Ralts community day in Pokemon Go. Caught 9 shiny in 2 hours! Even though it was 34C and humid as all hell, everyone and their grandma was outside playing. At least here in Japan PoGo is as alive as ever!
Ultimate alliance 3. Loving it so far.
Fire Emblem :Three Houses and Observer. R.I.P. Rutger Hauer
The usual Animal Crossing New Leaf dailies plus a fireworks date tomorrow. Otherwise Super Scribblenauts and Story of Seasons for singleplayer, Minecraft and Overcooked 2 for multiplayer (managed to reel a friend into the latter and my co-op buddy and I are tagging along. Fun times!). Possibly some Portal Knights and/or Stardew Valley depending on what I get reeled into.
I feel much better today. 😀
Still needs to drink some medicines.
So, i have played a lot of games this weekend.
1. Portal Knights (Switch & PS4)
The Switch version got some update version 1.6.0. Yaay...!
2. Final Fantasy XII The Zodiac Age (Switch)
3. The Sims 4 (PS4)
Oh, i have to check my ACNL towns Neptune & Xepher today since i have activated my hybernate towns, i want to make sure NOBODY wants to Move Out without my acknowledge.
Steamworld Dig 2, going for 100%. Got 34/42 artifacts, starting to get tricky!
Picked up Dragonball FighterZ for $18 on the eShop. That’s MY weekend!
@Anti-Matter happy to hear you’re feeling better this weekend!
Mario Maker 2 is a great game!
Also, 75% through Riptide, a fun water racer. Lines X, a simple relaxing puzzler. And almost at the end of Boxboygirl, and I don't want it to end.
Happy gaming everyone!
Three Houses. Great game, but all the decisions-with-consequences are generating mild anxiety in my completionist soul.
Last month I structured my complete backlog into a nice excelsheet. I also added a randomizer which picks out 3 games I should play. No exceptions!!! (Even though I have Three Houses limited edition glaring at me... the temptation is real)
I’m working on the Hard mode and Time Attack mode of Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze (some levels are so difficult), and my randomizer picked Punch-Out (NES classic) and Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga (3ds version) out of my list.
I love the variety you get from using such a list
This week I will be mostly playing
Smash Ultimate
Breath of the Wild
Wario Land 3
Fullblox
Only Fire Emblem Three Houses for the time being. I'm almost 20 hours into the Black Eagles story and loving every moment. No game has captured my attention like this in a long time.
Pokemon Yellow Version (GB) - Just started out in Pallet Town.
Star Wars Pinball (Vita) - Just picked up the Star Wars Rebels table so giving that a go.
Asphalt 5 (Windows Phone) - Starting a Let's Play.
Microsoft Flight (Games For Windows) - Still on a Let's Play.
Three houses!
Busy with work, but I’ll probably finish the main missions in Doom II. Also doing some classes on Coursera, so I’ll be going light on the gaming until Astral Chain later this month.
I’ve been a bit tired and unmotivated to play much recently.
Persona 4 and maybe a bit of Smash if I do play anything this weekend. But zoneing out to a bit of EVO is probably how I’ll spend my down time.
Jumping between Fire Emblem and Warframe
I just finished Metroid Zero Mission for the first time and then immediately jumped back in and got the best (non item-completion based) speedrun ending.
This title probably comes close to being the most straight-up perfect and faithful remake of a game that I've ever played. I wish you could skip the cutscenes that tell you where to go, but beyond that, I've really got no complaints regarding the changes and additions they made.
As a Metroid title in general, I've only really got a couple minor complaints. The returning areas from Metroid 1 aren't all that memorable in terms of their visual themes compared to the other post-8-bit Metroid titles, which is understandable given what the devs had to work with. The bosses aren't particularly threatening either (poor Ridley) in spite of their imposing presence. Plus there's the aforementioned handholding that can only be skipped occasionally. Still, that's pretty much it when it comes to any beefs I had with this game. So the good definitely far outweighs the bad.
Three Houses. Also, Three Houses. When I need a break from time to time I might dip into some Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
Since I cant afford 3 Houses just yet, I went back and finally beat Fire Emblem Echoes on 3DS. Now I am playing Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest, which I had never played. Both are great!
I've just downloaded Dragon Quest Builders 2. The farming aspect and villagers AI swayed me.
3 houses and dqb2. Both are fantastic so far.
Fire emblem three houses - golden deer is the best house. Did buy Doom and Doom II but can’t resist Fire emblem atm.
Plus I have my copy of Starlink from Argos to pick up as couldn’t resist at that price
G'morning folks! I'm currently on vacation and had a heck of a car trip to get to my destination, so that means...handheld games! I've been leisurely playing Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen (Currently trying to wait out a certain blade in chapter 3...Not sure if I or the blade will win. XD) and a little Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D. Now that we're here, I'm not sure how much gaming I'll get in during the actual weekend (schedule is fairly packed), but I'll do my best.
There's also a Community Day this weekend in Pokemon Go, but I'm not sure how much of that I'll be able to participate in. I really wish they'd had it on a weekend later this month....
Happy gaming!
Can't stop playing Fire Emblem Three Houses. It has really exceeded my high expectations, an easy 10/10 game for me.
MHGU and FE3H
I'm playing Fez on my Vita. Top ten of all time for me that.
@blockfight I thought it was meh at first but now I’m really enjoying it. Glad I ended up purchasing it.
@Anti-Matter Glad to hear you're getting there still wishing you to get well soon during that home straight. Portal Knights and ACNL? Sounds familiar to me that being said, I'm curious about the newest update/DLC addition, it took me by surprise.
Since I forgot to add this to my last post I might as well say it now. I hope everyone's having a nice weekend and happy gaming!
RISE: Race the Future, about 3 hours in and on the 6th championship. Loving it so far, glad I got this just after release. Also some Doom 3....
I’ll be continuing Youngblood for the most part- I’m not loving it as much as New Colossus but I haven’t gotten very far. Otherwise I’ll probably try a few more levels in Celeste and MM2.
Fire Emblem Three Houses! I haven't been able to play it much during past couple of days so I'll be catching up, finally reached the time skip though.
Fire Emblem and Smash.
FE 3houses, MUA3 and lost sphear.
easy answer Fire Emblem Three Houses about to go into the Time Skip and very nerves heard it gets very difficult once the Time Skip happens
@Friendly I really like your spread sheet idea. Might give it a go myself.
No idea if I'm going to play anything this weekend as I didn't play a game last month though I have plenty to play. I probably should start Fire Emblem or Marvel since there is a gluten of games coming out the rest of the year and I'm already buried.
Almost finished Kirby and the Rainbow Paintbrush on Wii U 100%. Am disappointed with it, some of the ideas just aren't fun and the controls sometimes get frustrating.
On the other hand Kirby Triple Deluxe on 3DS is wonderful, the 3D is done really well and it's a joy to play.
Don't need to say anything.
@wazlon Yeah, I picked up the idea when I googled 'how to deal with your backlog'. I'm so vulnerable to deals. First I only had to deal with Steam deals, now I have to deal with both amazing first party Nintendo games AND eshop sales too. The spreadsheet reminds me how many games I have not yet finished. One game a week and I still have enough for five years ...
Yes, yes, I know....
@Friendly I'm the same, just have to buy games when they're on sale regardless of whether I have time to play them. Am sure I'd be able to go a few years with my backlog too. 😀
It's a long time since a game has hooked me like Fire Emblem, probably since Xenoblade 2 ... I've basically neglected all the books I wanted to read this holiday, and the end is not nearly in sight.
I’ve started Three Houses and I’m beyond impressed. I can already tell I’m going to sink dozens and dozens of hours into this game. Other than that, I’m still adjusting to the chaos that the Hero has brought to Smash, plus earning some new Koopa Troopa costumes in Mario Tennis Aces.
Omega Labyrinth Life for me.
Defenitly Fire Emblem. I've just finished the Golden Deer house storyline, and now deciding which house I want to play next. It really is a lovely game, and such a trowback to the fun times playing Radiant Dawn on the Wii.
I'll be playing with my spyro reignited resin statue
I just beat Fire Emblem: Three Houses yesterday. I think I'm going to start the Bayonetta series this weekend.
I cracked and bought resident evil 4 in the sale as I have never played, then a day later they release the three dooms so obviously had to buy them as well.....
As a calm amongst all the violence will be trying to finish the isle of awakening in dbq2, and trying to unlock a few more characters in streets of rogue. Feel bad that game has kinda gone under the radar a bit- find myself grinning all the time whilst playing it, rewards inventive play and just seems to have been made with love. Anyone looking for something different to play I would highly recommend it!!! Have a great weekend everyone
Fire Emblem is too good.
Nintendo did the BotW/Odyssey thing again! It’s perfect for bite sized chunks or to invest hours and hours in!!
Three Houses is a perfect game (as of 40 hours - maybe it gets bad later)
I'm pretty sure I'm nearing the end of Dragon Quest Builders 2, I'm gonna try to clear that this weekend. Also gonna start getting into current endgame stuff on Final Fantasy XIV.
I'll be playing the excellent Dragon Quest Builders 2 all day today except when I'm playing Octopath Traveller or Assassins Creed Odyssey.
Fire Emblem Three Houses, it's by far the best game I've played this year.
If I feel like a bit of physical activity I might play some Racket NX too.
Will probably download Doom at some point, but I’m mostly playing Mario Odyssey (trying to beat that killer final level) and continuing through Child of Light.
Having finished Bloodstained RoTN and Crash Bandicoot 1 this week (crash yesterday), I'm finally starting my paythrough of doom 3. I'm also taking small doses of doom 2 in every now and then to see what all the fuss is about. I recall playing doom as a kid at a friends house but I was younger and didn't really get into it. Nows my chance i guess. Aside from those two, still quite a bit of Mario maker 2. I cant get enough of that game and I didn't think id be hooked on it as much as i am. I've been thinking about playing crash 2 or final fantasy adventure but maybe ill hold off until i finish one of the doom games. Rumor has it, ittle dew 1 is gracing the eshop in the next week or so and I'll more than likely pick it up. Want to keep my schedule open for it 😆
Fire Emblem and MUA!
Focus is all on XB1 this weekend, completed Gears of War 3 and will start Gears of War Judgment. Should be able to complete Gears of War Judgment and Gears of War 4 in time for the August Inside Xbox episode.
Wolfenstein:Young Blood!!!
Resident evil 2 for n64😎
Still haven’t collected all 120 stars in Super Mario 64. So I should be playing that this week. Plus some Smash Ultimate thanks to the Version 4.0, and maybe some Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled.
I bought the new Fire Emblem game. Not sure if I get around playing it just yet since I’ll be playing Smash and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3.
I’m playing MUA3. It’s actually quite good and addicting. I’m glad I stuck with it because it’s been a lot of fun.
Still on holiday so still A Link Between Worlds!
It was my birthday yesterday so I have some new games! Will be playing DK Tropical Freeze, Kirby Star Allies, Shantae And The Pirates Curse, Doom 3 and as big game Xenoblade Chronicles 2! So many games, so much vacation! Nice!
@RickD All the fuss was about 3D, massive maps and the orchestral soundtrack of course Enjoy!
Just beat marvel ultimate alliance 3 on mighty last night so I'll be starting on the new difficulty. Maybe some contra anniversary collection with the roommate too.
I’m going with Smash, SMM2, and FE:TH, although I’ve already played the latter through. Twice. T_T So depressed it’s over, too...
Two games for me this weekend, Doom 3 and the new physical release of Horizon Chase Turbo. Doom 3 is just as fun and scary as I remember it being when I last played it on the Xbox 360 a decade ago, and Horizon Chase Turbo is absolutely everything I could want in a racing game. It feels just like I walked up to a racing arcade machine back in the 90's and plunked in a couple quarters every time I sit down to play it. =)
Still playing MUA3 here mainly, but also have Forager and Fire Emblem that I’m juggling. And a bit of Diablo 3 as the itch has arisen again to grind up another char. This time a Demon Hunter.
Fire Emblem, followed by some Fire Emblem, and maybe, just maybe some Fire Emblem...
Crash team racing, and doom
Gonna check out the Wolfenstein Youngblood trial, and seriously thinking about the Ys VIII 50 percent off sale. I've wanted that game for a while.
Started Dragon quest builders 2 couple weeks ago and loved it, however I picked up subnautica on PS4 last weekend and already put 15 hours into it. So guess I’ll be playing that all weekend.
Few things for me
Fixed the drift on my left joy con. Works a treat now!
Zelda Botw
Getting Fire emblem 3 houses for birthday tomorrow. Wife says it was a nightmare to buy as nowhere had it in stock. Will be my first fire emblem so not sure what to expect and went off NL review score! Hope I like it. Have a nice weekend everyone!
Mostly Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 but will also try to mix in some Judgment.
@Friendly How did you do the randomizer? I love that idea and wanna steal it so I can actually get some of my backlog sorted
Wrapping up Earthbound on my Super NES Classic, with some Golf Story, Mario Maker 2 and Doom 2016 on my Switch. Have the house to myself, so a lot of gaming this weekend.
Finally picked up Octopath traveller, so going through that
Exploring Mario maker 2.
Messing with hero in Smash Ultimate.
And deciding to finish up Owlboy.
DQB2 and FE3H for me.
It’s beautiful summer weather here this weekend and the kids are swimming so gaming time will be limited. I’ll squeeze in some Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 and it’s been too long since I’ve Entered the Gungeon for a few runs.
Smash, Mario maker 2 and ultimate alliance 3
Some more Smash as Hero is really fun to mess around with.
Beyond that either going back to Darksiders or starting MUA3, haven't decided which yet.
Oh, and some Mario Maker 2
Umihara Kawase Fresh!, Morphies Law, Super Blood Hockey, Splatoon 2, Super Mario Maker 2, Raiden V director's cut, Marble It Up!, and Diablo 3. All of those games look awesome running at 60fps (Morphies Law has hitches, but basically runs at 60fps) and are really fun! I really wish we could save the weekly challenges for Marble It Up! because most of them are really fun variations of the normal game. Let us keep the weekly challenges gameplay forever!
Nevermind on Wolfenstein: Youngblood. Turns out the trial isn't a trial at all, but requires someone who bought the game to give you a buddy pass so you can play with them. Pretty crappy system.
I would've considered a purchase if I liked the trial, but it's a hard pass now.
Im still playing Dragon quest builders 2
For me it will be bloodstained, and some Mario Maker 2.
Dark souls on switch. It is probably one of the best games I've ever played. I love it, but I hate it. A strange relationship. I hope dark souls 2 is some day coming to switch too. Ds3 not likely, well, due to hardware limitations maybe. Don't know.
Also bought three houses and tried a bit. Oh gosh, that is complex and time consuming. Told muself that I need to socialise s bit more, not living like a hermit. Work and video games only at the moment. The only thing I don't like in three houses are american sounding voices. I'd prefer english similar to "dark souls english". Or a "Harry Potter english". American english just doesn't add to the immersion for me.
@Barbara001 Happy Belated Birthday
Randomized ultra sun and streets of rouge
I would like to get some Smash Ultimate in to put Hero through his paces. Definitely be playing more Senran Kagura Peach Ball as I need to beat the game with 2 more girls. Might be picking up Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 if my wallet is kind to me. Fingers crossed!
Beating Classic mode with everybody on Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
@Divinebovine Well, my excelsheet is a lot more advanced than this, but the easy mode is as follows:
Have all your games in a long list (Column A for instance), and use the following formula anywhere else: =INDEX($A$2A250;RANDBETWEEN(1;ROWS($A$2A$250));1)
The formula picks a random number between 1 and 249 for instance and returns the game at that specific row number each time you press f9.
However, my excelsheet also takes into account which games I've played by 1) marking it with an X in column B, 2) sorting the rows where the ones marked will be at the bottom, 3) counting how many X'es are in column B and then just pick a random number up to the row before the first marked game. Also, the games are filtered on which games I've lend out to friends or on what console I own the game, and picks the chronological first game first. For instance, it would pick Metroid first if I would not have played it before picking any other Metroid game.
Currently I'm expanding it to also look for a specfic genre. For instance, if I'm looking to play an RPG, I want it to search between the RPG's I have. I could have programmed it in for instance Python where I could have added a ton more features, but I like the visibility of a simple excelsheet. If it would have been work related stuff, I would have 100% programmed it in Python.
Before this all I asked my girlfriend to pick a game for me out of the list, which is a lot easier of course. But she grew tired of doing so, so I automated it .
@MartyFlan thnq so much! 💖
A good deal of BotW this weekend, with plans for some Xenoblade and Bloodstained as well. After wrapping up Resistance: Burning Skies on Vita this week, I decided to get Odin Sphere and SAO Hollow Fragment back on the card, but the first one's on hold till late August alongside my Plus (gotta get the saves from the cloud), so I started the latter. The battle system certainly piques my interest.
Dropping by a time cafe yesterday led me to get a taste of Folklore - while rather brief (especially due to a malfunctioning gyro on the controller) and bitterly hard to follow up on (a first party game still stuck on PS3 to this day), it looked like a promising mix of dungeon crawling and SMT catchemalls, all soaked with Celtic lore. :3 Sigh, maybe someday...
@Fake-E-Lee
I haven't bought Portal Knights DLC yet. 😅
@Friendly I actually coded up a little program to take a list of games and randomly pick one for me! I can share it if you like, it works but just needs a couple tweaks
I think I've mostly played obscure games this weekend. Zoids Wild (Japanese import) and Psyvariar (American release from a bottom tier publisher). They may not be big, but they're still fun.
Yo-Kai Watch One on 3DS, Disney Magical World 2 on 3DS, SUPER Mario Maker 2 on Switch.
I had some quick bursts on NES Open, Kirby, Star Soldier and Punch Out on the NES online. I had a fun old time on those. Tried out the R-Type demo, I like...had a quick blast on Metal Slug X and Strikers 1945 2, as you do. Oh and a big dollop of Adventure mode on Smash. It's been a lazy Sunday.
