Update 28/07: Bethesda has addressed the login complaints via social media. It should be optional and a fix is on the way:
The BethesdaNet login requirement was included for the Slayers Club, to reward members for playing the classic DOOM games.
The login should be optional, and we are working on changing the requirement to optional now.
For more information, click here.
Original Story: To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the DOOM series, DOOM, DOOM II and DOOM 3 have been released on the Switch eShop.
As you might have already discovered, the first two games require you to login to your Bethesda account or sign up if you want to play them. In fact, you can't even get past the title screen without a user account. You'll also need to sign in if you want to play these games in an offline state.
Here's the fine print at the bottom of both Switch eShop listings:
Bethesda.net account required. See end user license agreement. Terms of Service. Privacy Policy and additional details at bethesda.net.
Direct-Feed Games has confirmed DOOM 3 players are not required to login and the warning above is not present on the game's eShop page.
What are your thoughts about this requirement? Has this soured the surprise? Leave a comment below.

This is super dumb
Bethesda's website kept ending in an error message when I tried to sign up for an account today. Now I'm stuck with two games I'm currently unable to play.
DRM protection. In games more than a decade old.
That is unacceptable.
If it’s local multi player only I don’t get it.
However if they plan on doing online multi player somehow in the future then it might make sense
Can’t support nonsense like this, so I won’t be buying these games I would have otherwise been interested in.
Spent 30 minutes, with a continuous error message before finally playing a game I paid for. Not the greatest feeling.
I was so ready to buy but I cannot support always online or drm s*** dumb.
I was hoping Bethesda would leave this behind, but this doesn’t bode well for future games.
How tone deaf can Bethesda be like this is so absurd that it’s almost like it could be some intentional statement about how they crammed this into a classic game because they think they can get away with it, this is the same Bethesda that continues to roll out Todd Howard despite how much damage negative PR he generates with his blatant BSing. It doesn’t help that this is a boring port, they have the original source code to make a really polished port yet it looks like homebrew for the original Xbox complete with odd problems with music and sound.
I don't know what ya'll have been talking about. I played Doom 3 tonight on Switch, and whenever the Bethesda login screen appeared, I pressed B and it dumped me right into the main menu. I even restarted the game a few times to double check. I've been playing for a couple hours now with no problem. Never signed up for an account at all.
I absolutely adore the classic Doom games and have bought Doom & Doom II on every system I've ever owned that they were published on, and I was so very excited to finally play Doom 3 again for the first time in a decade or so. But there is absolutely zero excuse to force the user to sign into an online account to play a single player game with no online features at all.
If Bethesda updates these games to remove the forced online connectivity then I'll buy all 3, but until then I'm going to pass.
@AlternateButtons
It’s like they had two teams completely isolated, one wanted to finally bring these games out for current consoles at a great price the other wanted it to be as barebones as possible because all they cared about was getting new Bethesda accounts created.
@StarFoxRunner
It was ported by Panic Button who probably knew better about this and made it skippable while 1&2 were done by Nerve who probably cared about following corporate orders over anything else.
Yeah, this is complete BS. They do realize that the Switch is a MOBILE system which may be offline frequently, right? Are they complete morons, or what? The day id sold out to Bethesda is the day the company died.
I will pass. Yup yup.
@WaxxyOne By all accounts, Doom (2016) was pretty good several years later.
That is some serious levels of BS. My symphathies for Doom fans
I don’t get why this is a big deal. I signed up for an account without even having to go to the website. I just did it through the game. It’s a DRM thing? Ok, that’s dumb maybe, but I still don’t get all the fuss. I’m over here playing Doom and having the time of my life!
@CoastersPaul You know what would have made it better? No Bethesda logo.
I can't speak for Doom 1 & 2 but when I start up Doom 3 it asks me to create a Bethesda account and I just hit B then it takes me back to the main menu and I start/load my game. So far i haven't been forced in to making an account just to play the game.
@DTfeartheBEARD Doom 1 & 2 do not let you skip the login screen
Glad to hear Doom 3 does.
@DTfeartheBEARD I've updated the post to reflect this.
If it was skippable like in the doom 3 port, we wouldn't have minded. This just feels wrong and a bit invasive.
Did Bethesda forget that these games were SHAREWARE back in the day?!
What's even more wonderful is I can't connect to Bethesda's completely BS online service because I apparently have an account but don't know my password. Their forgot password feature doesn't work, and I have no idea what my password is because just like every other BS online service these days, you have to provide a lowercase letter, uppercase letter, number, urine sample, DNA sample, drug test, and three pieces of photo ID notorized by the pope. Hey, you know what, Bethesda? You're not Fort Knox. There are no spy organizations plotting to steal access to the 3,756th online service to be created (and likely crash and burn) in the past two years. How about you lighten the F up?
What if you want to play the main campaign of 1 and 2 instead of the multiplayer, or if you don't have an Internet connection?
You only have to log in ONCE. You DO NOT have to be online in order to play, just to start. Is taking 5 minutes to log in really that big of a deal? No, it's not. And if it is for you, then honestly you probably have better things to do with your precious time than play a 20 year old game.
Is nobody going to comment on the abominable and beyond idiotic dual-analog controls for DOOM I and II? These are simple games that were designed to be played with directional keys on a keyboard. At the moment, the games are unplayable in handheld mode or with a full controller as they were never designed to be played with dual-analog sticks, especially at harder difficulties where responsiveness is key (as opposed to juggling two sticks AND the various action buttons). Ironically, single Joy-Con play is the best way to play the first two games at this stage, but the problem with single Joy-Con play is that it requires you to hold the stick down to run, which can put a hell of a lot of strain when simultaneously moving.
Even more idiotic is that the directional buttons do nothing and the controls are not customisable.
Patch this crap out, Bethesda, and take your G-damn forced online log-in crap with it.
@N00BiSH : Over two decades old.
@EmmatheBest : They still are!
Bethesda is scummier than EA and nothing can change my mind. Wake up people.
Wouldn't it be funny if it required a NSO sub to create the account?
@WaxxyOne : I absolutely hate that practice too. It should be our G-damn choice whether we make a secure or insecure password, especially for something as unnecessary and inconsequential as this.
@Morpheel : DOOM 2016 nags you to download the "update" (which includes the multiplayer content), however, the "update" also includes bug fixes, which you are forced to download regardless of whether you intend to play the game online (which also requires a NSO subscription).
The decent thing to do would be to at least allow users to play the game online at no further cost considering that they cheaped out on the cartridge and cut back even further by omitting the map editor, but...
no buy, they just lost a sale for this dumb outdated practice that apparently bootlickers are defending here
I nearly bought the first one this morning but my one-year old picked up another controller and cancelled the purchase. I didn't have a lot of time so I deferred to her wisdom. Now I see this, try signing up for an account out of curiosity and it keeps failing so I guess she was right.
What a time to be alive 2019 is, eh? These charades are so frustrating for a consumer. What's the battle-plan now, how to defend ourselves from such?
Powerless, since it is mentioned on the download pages of Doom 1 & 2 and not Doom 3. Though it be in tinie tiny letters.
Glad I didn't buy these yet. Not planning to pick them up until this weird issue is resolved. My $5 should be enough to get me access to the game - not some weird account that I'm not interested in.
Way to screw it up Bethesda..
Life’s too short to get worked up over scummy business practices. I may not like what Bethesda are doing, but that is outweighed by a Doom nostalgia kick. So I’ll create a throwaway account, and enjoy me some mindless blasting.
Have a good weekend y’all
Just when you think they've got a win on their hands, they remind themselves that they HAVE to screw it up somehow.
Gg, Bethesda...
Bethesda sucks for doing this crap to Doom likers. I like Doom, but not corporate email account garbage. Hey game corporations! Stop doing stuff that you think is good from a management perspective, but gamers hate! Patch this annoying crap out of the Doom games! And never put it in another damn game.
This morning...”Oh they announced the Classic Dooms?!?!!! When are they coming out? October? Wait... it’s today!?! $5?!?! Cannot wait to get home!”
Afternoon “Yeah, you need to create a Bethesda Account.” “Oh... Maybe... I don’t play games published by EA or Ubisoft because of things like this...”
Evening “Dual Analong control on a “2D” game... my information for SOME reason...”
Well there goes my sale. How'd they screw this one up so bad, I'll never know
That sucks. That's all I can say.
It would be better if the log in wasn't there, but it's hardly ruined my day.
@AlternateButtons Capcom: See, we told you! We're NOT the problem!
Everyone: (hysterical laughter)
Whelp... Bethesda just saved me a bunch of money. Shady bullcrap. No thanks.
Not buying until you cut the b***s***, Bethesda.
Man...all of these people acting like taking two minutes out of your day to make a free account is ruining everything and is just an absolute dealbreaker. Making a mountain out of a molehill definitely applies here.
A Bethesda account on a decade old game? Very funny.
Was going to buy at least one of these, and now won’t be buying any. Does not need to be that complicated.
@Dorugreymon absolutely no reason a 20 year old popular game that as been bought to hell and back needs an account to play it, supporting this makes you a part of the problem
There's literally no issue with this, you can still play it on the go without an internet connection it just asks you to create an account when you first purchase the game
@Dorugreymon And yet you seem to fail to ask yourself the question, Why would Bethesda need my personal information to monitor my gaming habits on a 25 year old game? Why do they force you to have to do it?
@personauser93 I regret buying it now
Y'all could still play all of these offline btw. It's not like the account system will lock you out in playing these games unlike EA, OnLive, Ouya, and Stadia. My guess is that the account system is for the online feature they had implemented into the games.
@GameOtaku You can still play ALL 3 offline, it will ask you for an internet connection, just press B and it goes to the game
For shame. First it was introducing paid mods in Skyrim, then releasing a crappy broken Fallout 76, and later putting in pay-to-win mechanics in that game which they said they wouldn't do.
I'm really losing my affection for Bethesda.
So in other words I should just buy Doom 3 and forget about 1 and 2 unless they patch this out. Note taken.
@Clintos this is a single player game, there's no reason to support shady practices . you do not have any justifications for this unless you happen to be working for this company
@DarkLloyd What's so shady about it, Your PeRsOnAl InFo derp
@Clintos tell me a good reason why they need an account loggin for this?
go on, i dare you
Only reason it would seem reasonable to include this would be as an anti piracy measure but this can't be the case since it can be bypassed in 3.
@DarkLloyd calm down girl, Nintendo life even asked you to create an account, you don't need an internet connection to play the game, it just asks for an email, use your spam email address and you are good to go, your prescription will be available Monday, maybe smoke some weed till then
@Clintos thats not the same thing, and you just dodge my question.
p.s i aint a girl, throw your sad insullts into the garbage can
@DarkLloyd Gurrll you never answered my question, what's so shady for asking you for your email address? You seem more outdated than the game you are whining about
Weird as hell, but not a deal breaker.
you see people? That's why you should not get a paid subscription. You already paid a lot of money for those games! At least in the past when you bought a game you got the full set. A full coloured book about the game... game disc was included.. full game without DLC stuff. Suddenly XBOX 360 comes up (MS was always a money lover) made DLC happening. Now other hardware went to a next level... create a game halfly... if there is a demand they will add story (happened to street fighter 5).... if not they get easy money 60 $ for their SF5 game.... this is the same thing. Soon when your internet isn't working great due little bandwidth you might not be able to play the game the way you should. Stop buying DLC stuff as well people! Don't let it happen! Don't get subscription. Let them feel it we don't want it. We're giving them power this way
It was annoying at first but now I’m signed up to the Doom Slayers Club. Maybe I’ll win a free T-Shirt
Can you get refunds on software as when I bought these I didn't see anything about having to have a account to play what was originally a shareware game
All I can say is wtf (what the fudge...) Bethesda. Was kinda interested in these, but not anymore.
This doesn't even make any sense from DRM point of view... Isn't DRM build into the consoles and platforms like steam themselves. Why the heck would you need to sign into a different account just to play single player or local multiplayer game... Most games don't require you to sign into a third party account to play the game you know...
@Clintos its a single player game, it shouldn't have to require an account to play, there's absolutely no online in this game, not to account for the fact you had to be online to even buy it to begin with, which should of been good enough.
bottom line is Bethesda does not need an email for something that isn't a online only game.
the fact that you support additional and intrusive hurdles is disturbing and is the downfall of the industry. all of which YOU still haven't told me why you support this so pony up your reason or im not going to respond to you
p.s drop this girl thing because i am guy.
Oooh another intelligent business move by Bethesda. Going from strength to strength. Love those guys!
@KingPatrick24 - I had a similar problem, every time I tried to create an account in the game I got an error message.
I tried the website, but no confirmation email arrived. However, I tried the username and password I'd selected and the game accepted it.
Utterly stupid, user unfriendly way of doing things.
@teamdoa yes you can
@DarkLloyd please just block him
Thanks, Fraud Howard...
That's 1 and 2 off the wishlist, 3 is still on it, and a physical release and / or gyro aiming patch would seal the deal.
Nintendo caved in.
What a tragedy.
So these games I bought will be unplayable on my Nintendo Switch in 20 years after the servers shut down?
What a way to preserve games for the future...
HARD Pass. Deffinately will not buy this nonsense. Better to support other devs. Will un-tick this from my Switch games list. Complete utter tools.
Mole hill => mountain.
It’s annoyingly intrusive and unnecessary, but all it costs is like a minute of your time, before you can access 2 all-time classics on a portable console at a great price.
This is far from the worst business practice in gaming, and the quality of the games surely outweighs the minor inconvenience. Certainly doesn’t seem like reason to not buy them.
Now if they were freemium games that charged you for every bullet, that would be a deal breaker.
Edit: actually @Dragonilm makes a convincing argument. Unless there’s a workaround once the servers go down, this is completely unnecessary and eventually game-breaking.
@darthstuey i already deleted him off my memory bank, its all good
Yeah, Bethesda can $&@*($ right off.
I might get 3 as I didn't play that (too focussed on HL2 at the time), but needing an account for 1 & 2 is just ridiculous. Shame really.
Do you have to constantly be online to play?
@Laxeybobby - see comment #75
Do they work if you log in whilst on wi-fi then put the Switch in sleep mode and play offline?
I was so optimistic about this collection
@Jaalsky These games are not always online, though. You only need to log in once.
And off it goes from my wishlist.👋 Too bad.
@KingPatrick24 More like almost 3 decades old, but yeh, this is super dumb
I’m tempted by Doom 2 but was wondering, do I need to log in every time that I want to play it or is just the one initial login when I play it for the first time?
@WaxxyOne that post was brilliant, thanks for making me laugh whilst also making an excellent point!
Well if anyone is interested, the Doom Classic collection (I, II, Final) are available on Steam for AU$6.58
I used a fake email address to get past this, I didn’t have to sign up to anything. Only had to do it the 1st time loading, that’s it.
I do agree with the comments, just use a fake email, job done. £3.99 for Doom is a steal considering the price of other retro titles on the eshop
@N00BiSH As far as concerned, Bethesda tries to implement DRM on an 1993 game to prevent piracy.
(Shrugs)
(Plays Doom)
@DarkLloyd Im the problem when yall are sitting here complaining about something extremely minor that you only need to do ONCE just to start it? Lol, okay. This generation just cannot be happy with anything. @PlayedNSlayed They just ask for an email address, not your social security or home address, or anything seriously personal. If this was some shady scam site i'd get it, but its Bethesda. Youre fine. Plus as mentioned before here, you can play it offline. Doesnt seem like its monitoring much.
Took me like 2 seconds. What's the issue?
This should not be allowed. I am against this. Disgusting.
I finally got it done after a zillion errors and now I can play! But really this is totally unnecessary and just a pain in the ass!!! What’s the point of it??
If anybody is worried about giving their email to bathesda you can use a temporary email there are many websites that give you a 10 minute email account plenty of time to register and verify the email
The main point with account linking is this, and it's a good thing.
This way you can get free loot, DLC etc. for games by playing beta's, alpha's, watcthing selected streams, Twitch Prime DLC etc.
I used real mail at Bethesda for years, and they do not sell mail adresses. EA, 2K Games, Activision, Microsoft, Nintendo, Sony etc. does not sell mail accounts either.
They are all trusted.
If you never heard of account linking, you have most likely not played much on Xbox, PS or PC where it's been a common thing for 10 years.
2K/Rockstar gave out free Casino Penthouses, Millions of $ in GTA 5 to all who linked accounts this week with Prime.
Red Dead 2 also got a bunch of things sent straight to the game this week.
I agree that it's kinda stupid with forced login in Doom 1+2 and not optional as they are about the same as on release 25 +/- years ago, except for gamepad and cloud save support.
I guess I won't be buying them then.
I love having doom 1/2 on switch, I always end up rebuying them
But this is dumb, if I wanted to steal these games I would of done so 20 years ago.. THE SOURCE CODE WAS MADE PUBLIC IN THE LATE 90S, THE GAMES ARE AVAILABLE DRM FREE ON PC AND CONSOLE SHOULD BE NO DIFFERENT
I have these on GOG and require no account set up, and this should be no different
I still love having these games o switch, but god damn, of all the games to use online DRM ffs lol
You guys know what's worse? If you put it into sleep mode and then wake your Switch back up, the game feels the need to pop up a message every other minute to tell you it's not connected. I had to reboot the game to get it to stop doing that.
If you have Twitch Prime, you get 12 month free Nintendo online, DLC for Warframe, Smite etc. for Switch too.
@PixelDough assuming this is true, then the article is wrong and this is a total non issue IMO.
I have no issue signing up to them once - basically giving them my email address I presume.
If Doom can then be played offline, it's totally fine.
@Cathousemaster Yes but the question is.. How long can it run offline before requiring re-authentication again?
But yeah, I can confirm it works offline ONCE you've logged in once.. But for how long though? That's what I want to know.
My guess is after X amount of days offline it will require you to log into the internet again to re-authenticate.
I mean the source code for these games were made public years and years ago lol, there really shouldnt be ANY drm at all.
@Ventilator
"If you never heard of account linking, you have most likely not played much on Xbox, PS or PC where it's been a common thing for 10 years."
I'm not buying that at all..
The source code to Doom was made PUBLIC all the way back in 1997.. Doom 1 and 2 are readily available DRM-FREE from places like GOG.. Even the Steam versions will run without the client even running.
If you really knew much about PC gaming as well, you'd know a lot of PC gamers complain about online DRM bull like Denuvo and such
Wow, Bethesda has really lost the plot recently. Such a shame.
you know I bought Diablo 3 on PC... whenever I need to play I always have to go through the slow download first before I can even play the game. it's very very annoying. There are still honest gamers you know who do buy actual products. Forcing people like this having forced account is a big turn off. I hope they will also flatline
@Alucard83 It's also why I never bought or ever played Diablo 3 despite quite enjoying Diablo 2
Switch version of Diablo 3 afaik doesn't use any DRM? I might pick up that version some day
This whole required log-in thing is just stupid. My Switch is mainly a handheld console and not always connected to the internet.
Despite my initial excitement I'll hold off from buying the games for now...
@Silly_G
Oh wow. Logins aside, THAT makes me less inclined to buy.
how in the world can you F up controls for Doom? Well Bethesda found a way I guess.
Bunch of drama queens on here.
@Doktor-Mandrake I know that, and it looks like you ignored the 2 last lines of my post.
Denuvo is NOT a DRM. It's a Anti-Tamperer.
Denuvo to prevent cheating, hacking and game modifications.
It were never a DRM ever.
People who dislike Denuvo, is often people who likes to cheat in online games.
BUT. It's possible to mod games with Denuvo legally.
Just Cause 3 MMO Online mod for example works with Denuvo on Steam for example.
@Ventilator Thats being extremely pedantic, even Steam refers to it as "drm".. Yes technically it's anti-tamper
But you missed the entire point of my post, which was that the source code for Doom was made PUBLIC in 1997.
Stop trying to justify requiring a bethy account for the classic Doom games.. It's unacceptable and shouldn't be a thing.
@Doktor-Mandrake You wouldn't write a reply like this if you read the 2 last lines of my first post.
@Ventilator Maybe if you could eleborate that would help
Your first sentence made mention of loot, DLC ect.. and how we'll be given "exclusive rewards" basically by logging in
That's a weak argument.. I'll say this again
THE SOURCE CODE FOR DOOM WAS MADE PUBLIC IN 1997.
@Doktor-Mandrake
That source code won’t run on the Switch though will it? Isn’t that just the PC Code?
@electrolite77 the source code would of been used for the ports we have right now
theres a good reason doom 1 and 2 run on anything and everything
@Doktor-Mandrake
I suspect there’s still a bit of work involved though. Like with the GBA/PS3/X360 versions that weren’t free. (Have there been others released post-97? I can’t remember).
Good thing I only want Doom 3 on switch i guess. I have the others on multiple platforms.
@sword_9mm : I did get the hang of it after playing it a bit, but it's still less than ideal, especially after having played the originals on PC for over two decades.
The fact that the directional buttons literally do nothing is inexcusable though.
I am going to try to get my money back. This is absolutely unacceptable. I am frequently mobile and not near Wifi so this negates the point of having this on the Switch. Bethesda is totally wrong on this one.
@electrolite77 oh yeah, it'd still require work, I'm not saying they shouldn't charge for it, just that I don't see the point in using DRM in a game thats been available DRM-free for all these years
Speaking of the X360 versions, they were by far the best console releases of Doom 1/2.. They had online mp too and also had an exclusive expansion chapter to it (which is now available on Doom 3 BFG edition too)
I'm happy doom 1 and 2 are on switch, but the ports seem underwhelming compared to the XBLA versions
@StarFoxRunner Doom 3 seems to be fine even it's missing a online battle mode this is the first version of Doom 1 and 2 to have this sort of rubbish
even the 360 ports which work on XBONE too don't have all this nonsense, and they have actual online battle/co-op modes
I have the PS4 versions and it didn’t ask me for any account.
@ClassSonicSatAm I'm hoping they'll patch out the requirement to log into a bethy account
However that seems unlikely, wont be holding my breath
Glad I did not impulse buy the games. Having to create an account is a deal breaker in non online multiplayer games.
@Zach because companies have made millions of dollars from us paying to give them our information. It may be too late but I no longer give my information out freely unless I feel I am getting something worth it in return.
@Silly_G "Is nobody going to comment on the abominable and beyond idiotic dual-analog controls for DOOM I and II? These are simple games that were designed to be played with directional keys on a keyboard. At the moment, the games are unplayable in handheld mode or with a full controller as they were never designed to be played with dual-analog sticks, especially at harder difficulties where responsiveness is key (as opposed to juggling two sticks AND the various action buttons)."
If anything, the control scheme brings DOOM I&II up to console FPS/TPS controller standards of almost 20 years running, where left/right on the left stick is strafe movement. It should be familiar with most people who has played an FPS/TPS on console. People who play Splatoon 2, for example, are familiar with right stick aim if they're not using gyro aim (which they should be using gyro instead), using X for the map button, and ZL for running (squid swimming in Splatoon). The only buttons left are weapon change, L and R bumpers, and Use, which is A. DOOM controls are a lot more simple than say, CoD, Overwatch, or Fortnite (which I haven't played, but I don't know how people can mange that with a controller).
@sword_9mm It's standard console FPS controls, it's not bad at all if you're used to it.
I'm not someone who wish ill on companies but I'm heard that Bethesda is having financial troubles as of lately. Are they begging to go out of business with stuff like this?
@PortablexombieV2 Fair, but all they need is an email address to start this game. The rest of the information that you can give them is optional. I don’t think it’s too big of a deal to just give them my email.
Shouldn’t need an account to play at 25 year old game that we pay for. They take the service down and the game becomes wasted storage space. I don’t like the road we’re headed down.
kudos homebrew users, you have the better version.
What a f/$#ng annoying bunch of pussies everyone is here. Goddamned millenials, complaining almost about everything and blaming everyone else for their stupidity. Get an account. It's as easy as it sounds.
This is a small pain. Just go online. Create an account and that’s it. I’ve downloaded all 3 and once you log into doom you then don’t have to log into doom 2.
The overreaction on here to this is incredible. It takes all of five minutes to jump on and enter an email address. FFS.
Why nobody says that they have f****d up the music too? Along the DRM, they have altered the original songs! The tempo is slower which means that the music as we knew it, is not the same! For God's sake, Bethesda how you could mess these up!?!? You have to make a great effort to totally annoy users / gamers!
Wow, this and other gripes people have about these versions, I think I'll wait for Dundee patches. Not too mention, why the hell is there no online play?
I like how so many people just past here to insult people having a problem with this and completely ignore their issues while saying how easy and quick it is to make an account. Despite sums posters mentioning that they've had to spent over half an hour on it due to server problems. Gg.
Cya
Raziel-chan
@Razzy "Despite sums posters mentioning that they've had to spent over half an hour on it due to server problems."
That's not the reason for 99.5% of the whining though is it.
@Edu23XWiiU haha, preach man!
@Zidentia You don't to be online to play.
Adding to the comment above, it doesn’t need to be a valid email address, the email address I put in doesn’t exist and I am playing Doom no issue, and only to put it once. When I loaded Doom 2 for the first time it skipped out the email log in
Probably someone said it before, but just because I´ve read it here numerous times: Doom 1 & 2 never were sharewared, only the first chapter of the orginal Doom was.
And yes, all this tantrum outburts here are so out of place… you are just asked for an email-adress and that´s it. Besides, there is always the possibility that the games get patched in the future to allow playing without log-in, e.g. in case the servers get shut down
No buy from me. Shame on them.
What’s the big deal? Just register for the account. I did it with Telltale and Ubisoft. No extra cost there.
@Dman10 need online sub to nintendo for it.
@Beatley82 Yeah bro!
@PixelDough Well yeah, if you are playing Doom 3 instead of either 1 or 2 from what I've read. Otherwise, this is really stupid and just made me iffy on whether or not I want to get the games.
Please excuse my ignorance here and I’m genuinely not trolling but what’s the big deal about having to sign in to play Doom and Doom 2?
I get it’s annoying but people saying that aren’t buying it just because of that seems crazy to me.
I downloaded 1 and 2 this morning on xbox one and was the same thing
It’s for Slayers Club members and was meant to be 100% optional. They are currently working on patching the requirement out.
I took the liberty of downloading the PS3 version of Doom Classic Collection and the Doom games on GoG because I wanted to avoid this s***. I also have Doom I and II on Xbone, and Bethesda will have to pry all that from my dead body before I go for their deluded 'new' version that will likely be irrelevant if they don't do something about it.
Hey everyone, which of the 3 originals would you recommend the most for a newcomer to the series who has only played DOOM 2016? Are they all worth it? Because I seem to remember that the third one is not unanimously liked.
Thank you in advance 😄
@clvr I actually liked the 3rd one and it comes with the DLC as well.

Apparently they're going to remove DRM. Good, because it's asinine
Entered user name and password, enjoyed the game. Not exactly a big drama.
Bethesda just lost three sales from me. And I was one of those people that said Capcom needed to learn from their example. I take it back. Unacceptable.
@mikegamer I hope this is true. I'll get the games if they are fixed.
As @mikegamer wrote, this is all a mistake. No need to worry.
@mikegamer
Yup, article could do with updating now bethesda made official statement on it

Glad it's being made optional now, but it's something that shouldn't of been put in to begin with, the port also has some music issues
Interestingly, the port is running Unity engine, something I wouldn't of known if someone hadn't told me lol
@clvr All 3 are good in their own rights, imo
If you can only afford one, get Doom II imo or Doom 1
I bought this yesterday BEFORE realizing I needed to create an account with Bethesda just to play the game I had just paid for and has no online components to gameplay. After some quick online research, I just decided to delete the game and cut my losses. So, I was tricked out of a few bucks - nice one, Bethesda! But lost money to headache ratio for me is just easier to avoid Bethesda bs and not have a headache.
If they remove this idiotic restriction later on, maybe I'll re-download the game. But I'm already in the "I don't care" camp on this. My interest was in just reliving some gaming nostalgia on my Switch. I probably wouldn't have spent much time with the game had I actually been able to play it.
Silver lining - I'll spent 30 seconds looking up whether or not I'll need to jump though hoops-of-bs like this before buying my next Switch game. I'm talking games that have no online components to them or genuine reason to require an account.
@GabiTalks Bethesda said on twitter that this log-in is supposed to be optional, so they're going to be fixing it ASAP, apparently.
@Ralizah thanks for the update! 😊 Nice to know they're going to correct it. Looks like I'll get to relive some early 90's gaming nostalgia FPS goodness on my Switch after all. Just got to wait a bit...
The port has the same alterations as the Doom 3 BFG versions. Pills instead of the red cross on stimpacks and, AFAIK, altered Wolfenstein levels without Nazi symbolism.
update: Bethesda has announced it was supposed to be optional and they’re fixing it
@Beatley82 Dunno, is it? Did you make an exact count?
Plus, that's a weird way to call justified complaints.
Cya
Raziel-chan
@brianvgplayer Don't forget removed flashlight shadows and muzzle flash lighting.

there we go... Bethesda doing some stupid again the same with Wolfenstein... hard pass then
@Doktor-Mandrake
Fair point, I hadn’t made that connection.
Looks like they’re going to fix it. Question now is whether we believe it was a genuine mistake or another moment of Bethesda unpleasantness that they’re now backtracking on!
@Doktor-Mandrake
Agree on the X360 port, Id say that’s better. The PS3 one is as well. Really nice to have old stuff like this on the go though.
@electrolite77 just been reading up and x360 ports of doom 1/2 were delisted from xbla recently, also apparently not even people who purchased it previously can redownload it
Still got it installed on the hdd for my x360 but if that thing goes sounds like I'll loose access to it
Super annoying. I bought all three last night as I am a huge doom fan, only to not be able to play when I started up the first game while in transit. I logged on through my phone’s hotspot to fix it, but that is just stupid for a game with no online features that was released to celebrate the original game’s 25th anniversary.
Considered buying Doom 64 for my PS4 (I don't have a Switch), but if this is what it's going to be with that game too, I'll pass.
For those crying over this, Bethesda heard your plead and is working on a fix just like the Sonic movie and Nintendo's drifting joycons.

Bethesda is gonna send an update soon to make it optional.
Don't companies like Bethesda have any intelligent people in their ranks telling them that the more hoops you make people jump through to get what they want, they less they'll want it? I mean, this is business 101.
And one of the reason why I like consoles is their "pick-up-and-play" simplicity. I play on PC too, but the PC landscape is turning into a nightmare in which every freaking company is now doing their own storefront/launcher thing and it's becoming a mess. Consoles always have been interesting for me because of their simpler attitude towards gaming.
I was away for the last week and when I learned the classic Doom games were now available on Switch, and for about $7 (CDN), I was very happy and was thinking of getting them when I'll be back. Now I read this.... and Bethesda just lost my money.
I know they said they'll be patching them up to make it optional, but if it's still popping up every time you start the game, even if you can dismiss the screen, it'll be super annoying and it will still make me not buy them.
This type of cr4p has no business at all on a console. And even less on a freaking single-player game!
Oh no another torch and pitchfork article designed to get the internet forum posting minorities up in arms once again,and of course judging by the comments it works,when in reality this is the biggest non issue I have seen for a while,all you do is simply create a Bethesda account which takes a few minutes of your time,then you are logged in for all the Doom titles instantly whenever you come back to play.
Then people will always point out that not everybody has an internet connection or e-mail account,which I do not know how many people who would buy a Switch would actually fall into this group of people as they would not be able to download the these games in the first place,I am assuming there will be people in the Amazon jungle as yet untouched by the modern world,that will be upset because they can't play Doom on their Nintendo Switch console because of their lack of a valid e-mail account.
@johnvboy Not to mention Bethesda has said it was intended to be optional and that it will be in a fix.
Still....the torch and pitchfork comments give me a chuckle to read.
@Cotillion,
Awesome that they are fixing it,but I still feel it was a minor issue at best,I am just pleased we get to play these classic fps games on the Switch,and they just look sooooo good on the consoles screen in handheld mode.
The thought of owning Doom 1 and 2 on my Switch filled me with excitement, but now after seeing this I'll pass. Shame on you Bethesda.
@2ndFlush Why are you trying to justify this?
'Well...maybe they did it because the moon might be proven to be made out of cheese in the future.'
If they want to add online multiplayer later, THEN they can have people sign up for an account.
@Cotillion This is typical. Corporation does something stupid and when it doesn't fly they say it was an accident. Another 'accident' with this release was that the 360 Arcade versions of Doom 1 and 2 were delisted from the store and people who did purchase them could no longer download them. 'Ooops....our bad, we weren't really trying to get those people to buy it again.
@Taarna Except for the fact that it’s not required for Doom 3.
How can such a formerly great developer completely destroy their entire reputation in the span of 3 years?
Well they're trying.
This ARTICLE is just plain wrong. Thanks Nintendolife for spreading fear and lowering sales with clickbait articles.
Fix the facts in this article ... or just delete it. This is NOT DRM, it is still playable OFFLINE, etc. The games require a one-off registration, and it sounds like even that will be patched.
<sigh>
@Cathousemaster One-off registration IS DRM. The registration is there for the management of your digital rights ergo DRM. It's not always online DRM, though.
@ClassSonicSatAm Yeah, I am kinda aggravated that Doom 3's multiplayer and co-op modes seem to be gone.
@StarFoxRunner No your not wrong. :/
how come the 360 and PS3 get better versions with actual online co-op/death matches... and nearly into 2020 all we get is DRM and local modes
@sanderev I can't say I agree, but it might come down to how you define DRM. This is available as a physical release I believe, so multiple people who use the cartridge will register. You can also play offline, and there is no link between the email address and Nintendo or the game.
That's not DRM in my books - it has nothing to do with the digital access or rights for the game. It's just a way to build a marketing list.
Doesn't matter to me. I'm happy to play these three masterpieces. Take my money and my mail address!
