UK chart data is now in for the week ending 29th June, revealing that Super Mario Maker 2 has created its very own course straight to number one.
The game has actually become Nintendo's biggest launch of the year so far in the country, outperforming the debut of New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe earlier in the year. It's a pretty impressive week for Nintendo all round, as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (just missing out on the top ten in 11th) all saw sales increases from last week.
Mario's latest adventure also managed to outsell a couple of new entries on other platforms, beating both F1 2019 and Judgment to the top.
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night's physical launch on Switch has also propelled the game into the top ten this week; its opening week sales actually outperformed those for Xbox One and PS4 combined.
Here's a look at this week's top ten all formats chart:

No real surprise there, just finished "Story Mode" still got 40 "jobs" to do, and got a few world records on user made levels, loving it
I am constantly amazed that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still selling so well - surely everyone who has a Switch has bought it by now?! I'm not saying it doesn't deserve great sales, it just surprises me to still see it in the top 10.
@presenttense Too many kids losing their Switch carts.
@presenttense what about GTA V?? It's been out for almost 6 years
In my opinion one of the best Switch games so far... I usually call this title: “Infinity Mario Bros Game” and thats exactly what we need! Forever replay-ability!
Mario Maker was no surprise.
Bloodstain on the other surprised me. I love it. Been a while since I played a metriodvania game like this. Games like Dust and Cave Story were good. But this is on a different level.
Wish they patch out the issues soon
@Bunkerneath that is an excellent point!
@New_Guest I’ll buy it when it’s fixed
All the poor souls that are getting Bloodstained after the rave reviews for PS4 and XboxOne will be left with a sour taste... hopefully Nintendolife will soon release a review that also refelcts the poor state the Switch version is in...
ofcourse breath of the wild and mario kart do great. alot of people bought the switch for mario maker 2 and pick up those two games as well
It's somewhat ironic that the Bloodstained port they put the least effort into is the one that sells the most...
One sequel outsells a port. Bombshell.
This will serve as yet another reminder that focusing on Switch is where the money is at for soooo many games now.
I think devs are still in this denial phase where, they've been making more money on PS/Xbox/PC for so long, that even though they see evidence for it, they still prioritize those versions.
But firsthand experience has a way of changing people's opinions. When devs witness firsthand their games selling crazy well on Switch, those priorities will start shifting. At the very least, quality should improve. We're still paying our dues for 2 decades of 3rd party games selling worse on Nintendo platforms. The repercussions from that won't change overnight. But with results like this, they will change.
i played multi last night, was very laggy anyone else get thatn
@BulkSlash Well there is a lesson to be learned here. Bloodstained is in Top 10 because of the Switch version. I am pretty sure the studio behind this will never make the same mistake again
"Super Mario Maker 2 has created its own course straight to number one"
Good lead in, Mr. Craddock!
Just started the game, and it looks and feels great. I think this one will also be a long time best seller.
@New_Guest The days of buying on physical and playing without a patch are long gone I'm afraid. Last four carts I've bought have all immediately downloaded a patch. Not just for bugs, but increasingly for game enhancements and DLC when free.
NSMBU is a great game and a great value, being effectively two full top quality Mario games!
But Mario Maker 2 is like 11,427,892 full Mario games. Ranging from garbage rom hack quality all the way to "Hot dayum, even Miyamoto would be impressed!"
Well, if you haven't released any other games this year, then it's not difficult for it to be your biggest launch. 😉
I'm one of the people who bought Bloodstained physically for the Switch and I'm glad I did. It's a fantastic game. It might not look as good as the other versions, but the gameplay is pure Castlevania (Dawn of Sorrow specifically) and I'm really enjoying it.
I took a risk getting the version everyone was slating, but in fact, it's great. Maybe if I'd played the PS4 version I'd think otherwise, but I haven't so I've no problem with it.
@PALversusNTSC That is an excellent point. I hadn't considered the amount of people buying a Switch specifically for SMM2 and with it buying Mario Kart etc. That explains it!
I really want to like SMM2 but I grew tired of the first one easily - no-one really played my courses unless I promoted the hell out of them and after playing hundreds of automatic or stupidly difficult courses I gave up. Does this one handle those elements better?
@Bunkerneath Nice. I finished Story Mode the other day, and finished all 118 Jobs/Side-Jobs yesterday (that's how many I counted on the list, after I've talked with everybody that you can, and they all don't have any more jobs for me, and everything is built up as much as it can be and I can go anywhere I want in that area). . Fun times. Working on making a new level right now. I have a few of them up and running already, and am almost done with a couple more.
@liljmoore Yeah, Bloodstained was fun. I got it in the mail the day before it released in stores. So I was a good portion through when it actually released. I already beat it, with 100% of the map done. Just need to finish a few things to 100% the other categories. But Super Mario Maker 2 took over my time. Still, I liked Bloodstained, and will go back and finish all off 100%, and will end up playing through the whole thing again. This time using different weapons/tactics, to change it up a bit.
Also, the Switch version of Bloodstained isn't nearly as bad as I've seen reviews say. The 'input lag' isn't nearly as bad as I've read. In fact, I didn't even noticed it, even tho I've read reviews that talk about it. So that's not really an issue at all. The "slow down" from frame drops I've only noticed in 2 or 3 specific areas, but, compared to the whole map, it's not much. I mean, a couple of times it drops a little, but then picks right back up, but it's not an issue. It's definitely no where near as "bad" as people are trying to make it out to be. Sure, the coming patches will help. But it's definitely great. I had no real issues/problems with it, and I've don't pretty much everything you can do in the game. The only real issue is that it slows down a bit at the Twin Towers area. Everything else plays well. Sure, it doesn't look as graphically nice as the other console versions. But the Switch version got a late start. It originally wasn't made for the Switch. They were originally going to release it for the Wii U. It was part way through the development of the game that they cut the Wii U version and started on the Switch version. But the other versions were already about half done by that point, while the Switch was starting from scratch. So it's actually pretty incredible that they were able to get the game released around the same time as the others. Granted, it's not perfect, and they could of waited. But, again, it's no where near as bad as others have claimed. In fact, it's good, and I'm going to play through it again on the Switch. Looking forward to it, actually.
I have an idea for a game (sorry if you’ve heard it before): Grand Theft Mario Kart. It would never be out of the top 10. For decades.
Impressed Super Mario Maker 2 managed to dislodge Crash Team Racing: Nitro Fuelled!
If all those games saw a significant sales increase, it means that Mario maker gave a nice push in hardware
@presenttense there are new switches every week though...
@Balta666 Yeah I hadn’t thought about that!
Looks like the Switch version of Bloodstained really should of been prioritised a bit more. Maybe next time IGA.
@JaxonH hammer, head, nail.
@Balta666 but when older games see a significant sales increase (especially when there are many games and not just one) it usually indicates a big bump in hardware sales so Switch hardware sales should be pretty high this week duo to Mario maker
I hope that bloodstained will be fixed soon and that other studios will learn to prioritize switch version from that
@BigBluePanda The Bandicoot is powerful, but the Plumber is even mightier.
@deKay @Lawnachaun I too have enjoyed Bloodstained RotN Switch a lot. It's not the unplayable mess some have accused it of being. It's performed great for me so far, no crashes, Miriam responds well to my button inputs, slowdowns have been minimal, load screens between rooms have been quick.
@SmileMan64 Yeah. Exactly. The Switch version isn't nearly as bad as people like to claim it is. The reason Bloodstained on Switch isn't at the same level as the other consoles is that it got a way way late start on it. Originally the game was going to be made for the Wii U. But part way through the development, the cancelled the Wii U version, and started on the Switch version. So the Switch version had less time worked on it than the others. I'm sure the updates will help make it better. But I'm actually kind of shocked we got it so close to the other releases. I was afraid they would push the Switch version back 6 more months, or something. Due to them having less time to work on it. But as it stands, it's a good game. They did an incredible job, considering how much less time they had to work on it.
Great for MM2, seems to be a good release. Nintendo games are going to sell on Switch. Not a surprise.
Love to see F1 up there. Great game and fantastic Austrian GP over the weekend.
@New_Guest Nintendo would of delayed it, if they made it, and released it when it was 100%. No doubt there. That's the best way of releasing games. Not every company does that, sadly. Still, Bloodstained on the Switch is still no where near as bad as people like to claim. So it's not that bad of a release as it is. A delay would of helped, sure. But it's not an awful release. Pretty good, actually.
Mario Maker 2 sold 85% more than Mario Maker 1 at launch.
this is just the UK though what about everywhere else
@KBuckley27 The UK is traditionally Nintendo’s toughest region, so I think it’s looking pretty good for them elsewhere.
@Bunkerneath I played it to death on ps4 but I would give literally anything to have a ps3/360 quality level of gta5 on switch
@Lawnachaun I'm picking it up today, glad it doesn't sound like a disaster. Thanks!
@Quarth Enjoy. I'm going to play through it a 2nd time, after I finish making the next two Super Mario Maker 2 levels I'm in the middle of.
@Lawnachaun Yeah, SMM2 is eating up my time as well... in a positive way!
@Quarth I finished my most recently stage. It was supposed to be a huge Coin Rush level, inspired by the 3DS title New Super Mario Bros 2 Gold Rush levels. But, there's a limit to how many coins that can be on screen at the same time. So I had to cancel the level I was working on (which I'm going to remove the coins and rework the level into a regular level), but I started a new, smaller level, from scratch, to fit the coins I could on screen. It's much different than the original plan, but it's officially done and ready to play.
If you want to try it, it's here. 9F1-W99-P8G
My other levels are, 743-8XW-WFG, 30V-G9K-LTF, and 43F-Y4G-YDF. They are listed in reverse order from how I made them, but from better to worse. Good luck on them all. The last one listed is the trickiest one, so heads up there.
@Lawnachaun Will try them out as soon as I get time.
Congrats Mario maker 2. You beat a rerelease of a 7 year old game that has been discounted by $15 a lot. Makes me wonder if 2d Mario is way down sales wise after Mario maker 1.
