In case you missed it, the upcoming DLC for the run and gun game Cuphead has been pushed back until 2020.
Part of the reason behind the delay is tied to the overall wellbeing of the team at StudioMDHR. According to co-director Chad Moldenhauer, it's all about healthy development practices:
"The development of the original game taught us a great deal about the importance of making things in a way that's healthy and sustainable for our team."
In addition to this, the team wants to be "absolutely certain" the new DLC chapter fits in with the existing content and delivers a quality experience:
"While we initially announced a 2019 release date for the 'Delicious Last Course' expansion, our highest priority is making sure this new adventure meets the meticulous level of care and quality we always strive for."

I bought Cuphead when it was on sell a couple of weeks ago and it's been in my backlog ever since. I planned to play it when the DLC was released, but now that's a no go as i'm not waiting till next year to play it. I'm not mad by any means just a little bummed.
I love the style and look of Cuphead and want to try it, but I know I'd get savaged and end up all cheesed off.
Extra supa dope props to the developers for taking the high road.
It's fine I'll wait.
It's sad when this is the exception and not the norm...
Happy staff and money later for a high quality product makes sense to me. Good on em!
@BacklogBlues having the same thought. Having so much backlog I'll try to play it near the dlc release, but 2020 seems to far.
@Ichiyama I thought I would be terrible at it. I’m definitely not a great gamer but I was able to complete it
This may sound like a dumb question @Aslanmagic but did you beat it on the normal mode or the easy mode?
Looks like the dev team has been listening to Nintendo... not a bad idea.
@BacklogBlues not dumb at all...I did it on normal. Now, I didn’t go for high ranks or anything. Just beating the game was enough for me. But I really enjoyed it. It does take some perseverance but if you like it you’ll keep trying until you beat it.
We've decided that a good work-life balance is best for our team.... (after making so much money that we could afford to come to this conclusion)
Thanks @Aslanmagic was just curious because i know the easy mode leaves some of the games parts out. Thanks again.
@BacklogBlues you’re welcome. I hope you enjoy it!
always a bummer when companies underestimate the time it'll take to release stuff, but good that theyre doing the right thing with delaying so it can reach their standards
Absolutely the right decision. Don't crunch your staff and get the quality right. Those two things are definitely closely related
No worries. I'll be happy to replay the game several times between now and then.
Good take your time!!
Health is very important
I wonder if it will release simultaneously with a physical copy at that time
@Dezzy Better than “We made a bunch of money, now get back to your 12 hour days so we can make even more!!!” I’ve worked for many people like that.
Is sitting on his literal stack of backlogged games that stack a mile high, and he's frantically trying to catch up.
No rush, Cuphead! Take your time! Really, I agree with the reasoning.
I actually forgot about this DLC. I played it on the Xbox whne it first came out and it is so fun! (Infuriating at times, but fun)
I'll get the Switch port when the DLC comes out...... Got so many games, so little time. College starts soon and yea..... Exciting times!
Love that more companies (well the few that we have seen) are starting to see that gamers aren't angry at delays whenever we are told in a timely manner and respect to us and the developers.
We can be patient for amazing games.
Waffee. making things in a way that's healthy and sustainable for our team."
It's been delayed because they couldn't meet a deadline.
Following in Nintendo's footsteps. Good job MDHR.
@Ichiyama I felt the same before I tried it, after what I read I wasn’t expecting to get far. I was wrong! It’s not half as hard as I was expecting and once you recognise the patterns of attacks you make progress
Still better than rushing a game/DLC and release an unfinished turd that is barely playable for 6 months
Oh no! they delayed the DLC! you know what that means? the horrors of QUALITY CONTROL and ETHICAL WORK ENVIRONMENTS!
I look forward to watching a longplay of this on YouTube when it comes out.
I played part of Cuphead, got stuck, YouTubed the rest, and regret nothing.
I love this game despite it constantly giving me savage ass kickings but at the rate I am clearing stages in the game I'll reach the DLC by 2025 anyway so I'm fine with this.
Because as my name implies @denis09 i have a huge backlog, 48 games to be exact. And many have a collection of games in 1 game like the Sega Genesis Classics game which has 51 games on 1 cart. So more like 200 games. Which means i can play my backlog and wait for the DLC in 2020. But i'm kinda iching to play it and don't want to wait that long. Even though i have enough games to last me for the next 5 to 10 years.
I want the physical release, but I want it complete and I want the excellent quality so I’m happy to wait a bit longer.
Much respect to the developers. I consider Cuphead a masterpiece in its genre and a true work of art.
It's also not as hard as everyone says it is. I think that just goes to show how gamers are so used to games being extremely easy nowadays.
You just have to be smart and find the strategy that works for each situation that the game throws at you. In the end I found only a couple of the stages to be truly challenging to the point of starting to become frustrating (and oddly enough it wasn't the final two bosses, who didn't seem that hard to me).
@BacklogBlues Just to clarify, you actually can't beat the game on the easy mode.
But as I and others have said, with a bit of patience, the normal mode is manageable.
I say you should play Cuphead now. I understand the backlog problem with so many good games out there, but my approach is to first play the games that are of the absolute highest quality, and Cuphead is unquestionably up there.
They can take as much time as needed. This unique type of game demands you work slow and steady. No crunch time, no rushing. This should be the norm but this only applies to stand alone studios and not corporate slaves sadly.
Aww- I was waiting for the physical version which won't come out until the DLC is released. Looks like I'll just have to be patient.
I'll wait a little longer then, no problem. A product of love and care is always better than a product of stress. It will get a physical release with the expansion when it's done, right? Because of a game this beautiful to look at, I'd like a physical copy, and I'll gladly buy any edition with an art book or some extra goodies of beauty.
@teko definitely not as hard as others claim it is. The difficulty is overstated. I'm not patient or masochistic enough to legitimately beat the likes of Ninja Gaiden or other tough NES games, but I was always making progress in Cuphead without too much frustration setting in.
I like hearing that MDHR wants a healthy and sustainable development process, but I've always had my concerns with their process. A big part of Cuphead's success is due to the visuals and it being an interactive cartoon in the sense that it was made in a similar way with hand-made cel animation. It's the kind of process that I think will have diminishing returns on sales over time because it can only be new once. If they stick with games using animation cels, I wonder if that can be sustained for more than a few games, especially when it doesn't stand out anymore. I wish them luck.
I'm all for delaying a game and/or any DLC if it's to increase the overall quality of the product. Even more important is that the physical and mental wellbeing of all team members doesn't take a hit from overwork or burnout. I respect that even more than the product itself.
@sdelfin If they keep up with their extremely high standards of quality with visuals, music and most importantly gameplay, I'm sure that their games will continue to sell well, even if they continue in the same style after the novelty wears off.
@N8tiveT3ch when is the nintendo switch physical copy coming out ?
