Well, Animal Crossing was finally shown off during the Nintendo E3 Direct, but the news is both good and bad.
The upcoming Switch title will be called Animal Crossing: New Horizons; you can get a first look at it in the video above. It appears to feature all of the cuteness and chores you'd expect to see, although this early footage only scratches the surface of the game, we're sure.
We do have some additional information on this one, directly from Nintendo:
Players embark on an ultra-exclusive Nook Inc. Deserted Island Getaway Package and enjoy a peaceful existence full of creativity, charm and the freedom to roll up their sleeves and make their new life whatever they want it to be. Players can collect resources they can craft into everything from creature comforts to handy tools as they set up a homestead they can decorate freely, both inside and out.
If you watched the Direct live, however, you'll no doubt be aware that the game has sadly been delayed until 2020. You'll be able to get your hands on it from 20th March; Nintendo said that the delay was put in place "to ensure that the game is the best it can be".

Ouch this really hurts this holiday season. Well at least Luigi's Mansion looks good. Pokemon looks meh at best.
I was bummed when it said 2020. But it'll be here in no time. Tons of other stuff to play till then and we got Pokémon. But what they showed looked good. Remains a Day 1 buy for me.
Yayyyyyyyy!
Nooooooo!
-was kinda how I felt watching that segment.
Tho I gotta say, there’s definitely enough coming this year to hold me over!
That opening definitely threw me off. Nook Inc! Nice one Nintendo!
So no big game in December.......not good
I wasn't surprised at all ...Always thought It'd be a spring title.
Yeah, I suspected this wasn't coming 2019.
@Roibeard64 well they didn’t give a date for Luigi’s Mansion....maybe?
Look at that new high resolution wood texture on the logo, though. Wow.
@Roibeard64 Luigi's Mansion 3 not big enough for ya?
Looked almost like AC x Minecraft to me. Didn’t excite me, but it’s Animal Crossing. I have faith it will be awesome. The delay is a real bummer. The one bad thing in the direct.
I had a feeling it would get delayed. Just gotta wait a little longer for that Animal Crossing fix.
@Kevember Reggie looks more like Bowser than Doug Bowser!
Another really nice use of physically based rendering by Nintendo.
Ok well it looks fan frigging tastic and I’ll have 3 more months to work on my backlog than I thought I would so I’m cool with this.
You broke my heart Nintendo Should've hit us with the bad news at the recent financial results and just focussed on gameplay. At least Zelda was there to pick me back up though
It looks better than I could even imagine!
I'll take a delayed game over a buggy rushed release with a massive Day One patch any day! Although it was a surprise that this game needed more time. How intensive can an Animal Crossing game really be to make?? (I say as someone with no idea about Games Design...)
As much as I'm really looking forward to the game, I'm very okay with this delay. I'm already so overwhelmed with how many games are releasing in the back end of this year so pushing one of the major releases back to early in the year when the release schedule is usually relatively empty is probably for the best.
Fine. Too many games to play as it is.
@neogyo i suppose though im assuming its going be arround halloween due to its theme.
Pokemon may have to carry the end of the year alone.
I'm fine with the delay, got so much to play this year anyway.
Besides, I think AC games are more fun played in the Spring/Summer anyway (Less rain, more interesting bugs and fish to collect, etc.)
I’m excited......but I wish they would’ve changed up a few things. Oh well I’m excited
Well dang.... Everything getting pushed to be in 2020 haha. (From all conferences , 2020 was really prevalent)
Luigi's Mansion and Pokemon look awesome. Astral chain looks awesome.
I hope they release Super Mario 3D World to fill that Christmas gap....
Please Understand.
How much time do they need for an AC game? There's seemingly nothing to them and they haven't made a proper new one in years. AC:amiibo Festival was an epic fail. They have the game on mobile for a year now.
I just don't understand how this can possibly need more time.
Sorry for all the people waiting on this, I know you've been waiting awhile.
@Roibeard64 I’m hoping they’re saving Metroid trilogy for December!
@rjejr I have a feeling they don’t need more time but want to spread releases out so there’s less gaps...
@datamonkey me too was hoping it was going be the final announcement .
The push to 2020 will give us time to save some money to buy it.
I really enjoy AC, but a delay here isn’t one that bugs me too much. I think because of the relaxing nature of the game.
It was less than a week ago they said it wouldn't be delayed. Funny how quick they have to cover their butts.
I'm a bit let down by the lack of Isabelle. Also, the map don't look any bigger than the DS games?
They’ll be fine, plenty of other E ticket titles coming out this year. Pokémon, Zelda, Mario Maker 2, maybe Luigi’s Mansion. Smash Ultimate, Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 (the only Kart game that the Switch will get) are also doing well.
Probably got delay so it doesn't took away Town's thunder. That's okay with me.
@Dan_Dan They know Isabelle is a fan favorite so I'm sure she will figure in heavily to build hype closer to release. As far as the map, in the Treehouse they introduced something called "Nook Miles" which you earn like airline miles. No clear explanation, but I can only assume they allow you to visit other islands, so the full map is probably massive. They were only showing us what players will see in the first couple of hours of play.
Did they not just confirm Animal Crossing was confirmed to still be a 2019 release like a week and a half ago?? This is the second time they pulled this BS. First it was with FE, now Animal Crossing.
Thank you for the delay. I need some time to recover.
I was and still am impressed by Animal Crossing New Leaf. So not to be a downer but the trailer they showed didn’t look much different graphically. Maybe because I was watching on my phone sneaking at work with a low YouTube res setting? But I thought it’s be a little more bright and shiny than what I saw. Oh well. I’m still gonna get it. Animal Crossing is the best!
@mattesdude that actually makes sense. I know what you mean. It’s not a game that you “beat” in a couple days.
NOOOOOOO
Game looks really good though. The delay hurts, but it's worth the wait.
Bittersweet... Allows me to fully experience Pokemon and Crystal Chronicles at least.
The delay is ok with me. Better make the game great rather than rush it. Also, I preordered a Google Stadia that will keep me busy from november and during the holidays.
Again animal crossing like the WII version. I didn't like that version. Gamecube version still the winner for me. Wish they used that graphic style... walking on map and everything moving down like a movie... just doesn't do it for me. Good for fans
Animal Crossing being delayed wasn’t too big of a surprise, but that weird ass “2019” for Luigi’s Mansion 3 was pretty disheartening. Could it be delayed as well? Their two most anticipated games going into E3 have no release date or have been pushed into 2020. Nintendo won E3 for sure, but they really dropped the ball announcing those games in the September Direct then going 9 months without telling us anything.
But at least Animal Crossing isn’t going to be a 2019 game that’s as lackluster as the new Pokémon is.
Bummer its 2020 reallt6whas hoping to play this with christmass.
Well we got Luigi and pokemon so I will survive it though
@Kevember mmm. Charismatic? I’m not sure, yet. Def professional and a good presenter. It will be interesting to see how his public face develops. He is called mr bowser which is awesome for a start it was a good debut for sure.
On topic.... argh. Not happy. I want this game already! I wonder what the phone element does? Cross mobile play?
Did you guys see it was multiplayer on one system?
Im ok with Animal Crossing being delayed because that means we are getting a better game
The only good things about it getting delayed into March 2020 is that it gives us a really popular Nintendo IP to play in the first quarter of the year and that it will probably make the game even better than it could be.
I still think they could've skipped Amiibo Festival and Happy Home Designer. That likely would've gotten AC out in 2016 for Wii U or 2017-2018 on Switch.
@Shinnos I’d take a finished game on the time that was promised rather than a delayed game.
@datamonkey The "less gaps" theory makes sense. I felt like they did that A LOT on the Wii U. I wonder what the cross-over is between AC and Pokemon gamers? AC games seem like nice spring games, go out in the world, grow, harvest, build. Better than a winter game. To me anyway, but I don't play them. Luigi should be October for Halloween, none of this "Coming 2019" when the year is half over.
Off the top of my head Zelda is Sept 20, Pokemon Nov 15, so that pretty much only leaves Oct for Luigi. Though knowing Ntinedo it'll be early December. There were a lot of games announced today and I don't have them all sorted out yet. I guess I care b/c Luigi 3 is the main big game for me.
Disappointed about the delay, but the game looks awesome. It seems we will have great control over the look of our town.
The game looks gorgeous!! I'm so pleased how the game turned out, and I'm sure a direct will be coming soon exclusively for New Horizon.
@MostPeepsAboveMe - I'm severely disappointed on the game delay, but I'm glad the game will come finished. It's also a plus not having to carry the financial burden of needing money to buy AC this year. With many other fantastic titles coming this year, my wallet will already be pretty beat up.
@LuigiTheGreenFire "I still think they could've skipped Amiibo Festival and Happy Home Designer. That likely would've gotten AC out in 2016 for Wii U or 2017-2018 on Switch."
Amiibo Festival was likely made by a different development team, and my theory for Happy Home Designer is that it started as an in-house prototype to test new ideas, and they liked it so much that they spun it off into its own game. I doubt it took any significant time away from the development of New Horizons.
Like the Pokemon announcement with no national pokedex, this is a bummer, but not a killer. This game remains my most hyped game for the Switch coming up!
Like a lot of people, I'm bummed out but the delay will give my wallet a break and give me something to look forward to next March
The game looks amazing and love that you can play up to 8 players online. Kinda bummed its changed from 2019 to 20 march 2020 but as many of you guys pointed out it makes sense considering how crowded 2019 is getting.
Even on a Animal crossing story we are still complaining about the new Pokemon game...get over it the game looks like a Pokemon game should, just like this new Animal crossing game looks like the others with a new cleaner look, some Pokemon fans are never happy, first they moan about the Pokemon let's go titles stating they will never sell and are not proper main line games, then when the man line game is revealed they still complain.
Wow... just wow
Usually, announcements like this get incredibly panned and articles like this have over 200 comments. But after seeing this footage, I don't care it's delayed, it's looking like the true evolution of Animal Crossing many fans wanted
What's more, that trailer was just the tip of the iceberg
I LOVE the new concept; it looks like a breath of fresh air for the series, and will hopefully incorporate the Happy Home Designer mechanics for town buildings and villager houses as you develop the island (how fun would it be to be able to design EVERYTHING?). The crafting mechanics shown in the Treehouse segment look interesting as well, and I’m very much looking forward to the game. I’m a bit disappointed in the delay, but considering that I was expecting this to come out in December, it was only pushed back by three months; besides, AC games are always more fun to start in Spring/Summer because of the nicer weather and all the fish/bugs you can catch.
"However, Kyogoku told IGN you can make up to eight playable accounts on one Nintendo Switch and they will be able to live on the same island. You cannot have multiple islands, however."
So does that mean no multiple islands on one account or absolutely no way to have two islands on the same console? The latter would be really bad since you couldn't even just buy multiple copies thanks to the save system.
I actually think this is a smart move to delay until 2020. Obviously we don’t want a rushed game but also the Switch will have momentum next year.
It’s funny looking back at this one year later, when everybody has this game.
