Earlier this month, Square Enix announced it was releasing a prequel to the Switch title, Octopath Traveler, on mobile devices in Japan this year. Although we've already got a few details about this upcoming free-to-play single-player RPG, a bit more information about the story side of the game has now been revealed via Japanese website, 4Gamer.
Here's a translation of the story (Thanks, DualShockers):
A few years before the tale of the 8 traveling heroes…
The continent of Orsterra was dominated by those who respectively reached the apex of wealth, power and glory. Their endless ambition plunged the continent into darkness. However, multiple individuals stood up against them…
As the one “chosen by the ring”, you will travel the world, and meet those rebels. What will you feel, what will you grasp at the end of your journey? Go forth, towards the story you seek…And craft the legend of the Continent’s Champions.
As we already know, players will have to pick the pathway of wealth, power or glory. The pathway selected will lead them to "The Witch of Greed" Helminia, "The Hero" Titus or "The Playwright" Arguste. Below is a description of each one:
In search of wealth, you will begin your adventure in the deep forests of the Woodlands region. The one who stands in your path is “The Witch of Greed” Helminia. The witch has embezzled an immense fortune in Valore, dying the town in darkness.
In search of power, you will begin your adventure in the snow-covered Frostlands region. The one who stands in your path is “The Hero” Titus. He controls the Red Wings, an organization made to rehabilitate ex-convicts. He rules over the town of Amberglow with an iron fist.
In search of glory, you will begin your adventure in the rich plains of the Flatlands region. The one who stands in your path is “The Playwright” Arguste. The citizens of Theatopolis, the capital of arts, all admired his work, but he ended up straying from the right path.
If you live in Japan, you can fill out an application form in the hope of being selected to play Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent. The demo will run from 26th March until 2nd April. For more details, check out our existing post.
This upcoming mobile release is expected to make its way across to the west, it's just a matter of waiting for an official announcement. In the meantime, take a look at the game trailer below:

Being one of the few people who found Octo super pretty but super lacking in the story department, I''m curious to see what they can pull off on mobile
what does it have to do with Nintendo or NintendoLife?
I thought this game was already on Switch released....
I need bravely default 3
@BlackenedHalo Octopath was a semi-major Switch exclusive last year, and thus most of its fans are also Nintendo fans. This isn't really a big stretch.
Seeing how well octopath did on switch it’s a shame it’s a mobile game as I never play these .
I'm more interested to hear about octopath 2, maybe we will see it this e3, they got the engine working, i doubt the sequel would take longer than 2 years to make
Hopefully we'll get OT2 for Switch soon. What I want from a sequel are deeper and more intertwined stories than we got in the first game, although it was pretty good.
@KingdomHeartsFan but not for Nintendo
If only they hadn't decided to put it on mobile platforms... Sigh. Just put it on Switch, like what's the big deal.
I love Octopath, but I don't like the idea of possibly missing out on a part of it because I still have a (perfectly functional) old mobile phone that I refuse to replace with an expensive spying device with an expiration date attached to it through "updates".
If it were a decently priced DLC for the original game on Switch, or a standalone Switch release, I'd be excited about it.
So... it's more like Triopath then? =0p Totally getting this, assuming it comes to the West.
@Shambo you've just revealed you like Octopath Traveler on the world wide web.... Big Brother is watching you and tracking you with his cookies! You'll now get loads of adverts tailored to your thirst for JRPGs! =0p
Free to play is not a set of words that makes me excited or optimistic.
The trailer makes it look fine, but the looming words free to play make me wonder what they're gonna shove in there that'll make it not as good to get money some other way.
Hopefully It just means it'll have a demo for 1 chapter or something after which you pay for it like a normal game, and not like watch ads or get premium coins to unlock attacks or something. They did the demo thing on the switch so it's not too implausible.
They always advertise these kinds of games as if they offer meaningful choices to the player, but it always boils down "Would you like to use Character A or Character B to perform the exact same action?" I wish we could get a game in this style that's a proper RPG.
I feel it's a bit disrespectful to those who bought the first game on switch and then make a preqeul on ios and make the console players wait for this or a sequel
@BlackenedHalo what a ridiculous comment. It's a prequel to a Switch-exclusive game. Obviously a significant audience who are interested in the game will be Nintendo Switch owning and Nintendo Life reading gamers. Go be petty somewhere else.
So is that 8 fighters at once you control in battles?! I'm interested in this having played the first, but it needs to feel less of a chore to get through. The first just took way too long considering it actually wasn't a particularly big world or game. 3 pathways sound easier to manage though.
I know there will be some benefits to having it on mobile but I can't see how this can't be free DLC for the Switch version. Even paid for something like £1.99 would be adequate.
"Do you guys not have phones?"
I kid, I kid.
Anyway, considering that, for lengthy backlog reasons, I haven't gotten this on Switch, I may try this one out first since it's a prequel. I mean if it's still available on mobile platforms when I get to it. Square from what I've seen has a tendency to "deactivate" certain mobile games.
While I do wish this come to Switch, at the very least Square Enix is not being lazy and madamuphadhize it like their other certain franchise. Fortunately I don't need another Octopath Traveler in my life on Switch but another Final Fantasy Tactics game in this graphical style would be excellent or at least a port of War of the Lions would do just fine for Switch. My money is waiting Square Enix, you just had to deliver it that's all.
as long as it isn't one of those ones that require constant internet access.
Sorry, but once again it’s just squarenix, making money on something else’s achievement, just like ff x-2
I'd like to see larger parties in JRPGs, 4 was good for a long time but 5-6 should be the standard for turn based and ATB.
This looks good on paper (or text), and the trailer is also intriguing. I'm not a big mobile gamer, but I think I'll be keeping an eye on this one. Personally, I'm curious if it'll be beneficial to play Octopath Traveler before trying this out.
The characters walk to slow for me..hope theres a way to run or a walk speed option.
Just loved Octopath Traveler. I'm in the minority (?) that really liked the story and the combat was nice as well.
Wish this game would release on mobile AND Switch though. Can't be too big of a conversion to get a port for us.
@sleepinglion You’re not the only one. Totally overrated game in my opinion. Square Enix is incapable of making anything near the quality of their work in the 90s.
If it’s not out soon I’m going to lay down in oncoming traffic
@Robzilla Thanks, man. I generally get leapt upon when I dare criticize the title for being gorgeous but hollow. Agreed, having grown up with the incredible 90s RPG titles I've come to expect a far better story and compelling characters
I really don't understand why this isn't announced for Switch...it's not like it wouldn't be the first free to play game.
hope the gameplay wont be too complcated cause of 8 people in your party
@sikthvash,
It does sound like it, even if there are 8 characters at once on the battlefield.
