There's a new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate rumour suggesting the popular home run contest mode and stage builder will be added to the game in a future update.
This information comes from the YouTube Channel Source Gaming, where it reveals dataminers have found files within the 'How To Play' section of Ultimate, making reference to the above-mentioned modes. The first file is "howtoplay_stage_builder.html" and the second file mentions the home run contest mode.
These placeholders are apparently enough evidence the modes will appear in a future Ultimate update. Source Gaming goes onto speculate both could be added to version 3.0, which Nintendo teased during its most recent Direct presentation.
Would you like to see the return of these modes in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate? Leave a comment below.

YES PLEASE! i would love to see these modes come.
also break the targets.
I sorely missed home run, definitely would love that to make a return
Sees the article title
Me: OK
Home Run Contest and Melee style Break The Targets would make this game so much better that I wouldn’t care if it was DLC. I need this in my life.
I expected this, the blurred out imaged you see in the Direct kinda looks like a stage list, so...either a stage builder is happening soon or we're getting more returning stages that didn't make it in the original release.
If turn out to be true, this is a very good news.
@GyroZeppeli I think traditional Break The Targets were dropped because there way too many characters to design levels around them. That's why we got "Angry Birds" Targets in Smash 4,
@John_Koshiro I know it’s unrealistic. That doesn’t mean I wouldn’t love if it happened.
@John_Koshiro I dunno, would it have been that much harder than making 1300+ unique Spirit Battles?
Ultimate Smash Tour anyone?
Home Run Contest, yes. Also bring back Break the Targets.
K figured as much but I would take a revamped Smash Run over any other mode.
I'll create the Smash of Doom...I mean yes I am looking forward to it!
Well, it would be inline with Sakurai's ability to never stop working......
I would love to hear this piece of information from the developers themshelves at the time they have decided and not (once again) from dataminers. Nintendo Life, you'd be more classy if you started to ignore rumors, dataminers and hackers. You can do it!
I loved the homerun contest even though I was mostly terrible at it.
It would be nice if they brought back the stage builder similar to Brawl, and utilize the tough screen.
WHY does nobody else remember BOARD THE PLATFORMS!!
I was wondering why the Home Run contest wasn't in the game. Still Super Smash Ultimate is still great!
Holy heck. It would be awesome if true.
Didn't miss Home Run Contest one bit. It's a pity they won't be patching in Smash Run, though, as that was a ton of fun in the 3DS version of Smash 4.
This would be absolutely awesome. As much content as Ultimate had, I felt it was fairly lacking in terms of non-fighting modes compared to previous games. The addition of stage builder and home run contest would help the game truly live up to its name, and be the absolute ultimate Smash game.
I’d love to have many of the features we’ve had in previous SSB. I want to be able to organize my spirits on some sort of custom background (think Badge Arcade) like the previous trophy modes. Getting descriptions of the characters and games the spirits originated from would be great as well.
Sweet, more content is definitely good. Break the targets returning would be cool also if it was like 64 & Melee where characters had their own target course. But if they (understandably) don’t want to make over 70 unique courses, I can do without BTT
@Joeynator3000 One of the blurred screens looks like a Battlefield background with extra UI (a stage element selector on the left side, and a save/test button in the bottom right)
@Not_Soos A Spirit Battle is really just a character and stage combo with maybe an additional effect they chose from a dropdown. Break the Targets would require a well-designed level for each one.
@ilikeike I can attest to that myself!
Yes I’m a fan of home run contest!!
I wish we get Smash Run for Ultimate too.
@arekdougy I liked Board the Platforms. It’s how I learned to jump so well with Link.
I’m down for Home Run to return. I’m also guessing that 3.0 will bring the mobile app stuff that they said would eventually come.
I would rather have Smash Run. With the switch, we can fight others on the big map then fight each other in the end.
But I'll take free content updates! Pretty cool to see more things being added (assuming this is real. I do think stage builder is coming back, revamped and everything)
Also, add team tournaments (where a team of 2 can fight for first place) and just easier to do coop fighting.
I wonder if old maps are coming back?:
pacmaze, Poke floats, metal Mario stage, past final destination and battlefield designs.
On one hand we have more than enough stages that custom stages seem irrelevant... on the other hand, I rather liked the stage builder in Brawl. Hopefully it’d be more like that and less like the one from Smash 4.
@arekdougy
I do ... But Escape is funner.
As with all rumors, I'll believe it when I see it. Even if it's true though, I'm not a big fan of Home Run Contest, and unless they add more challenges to unlock things like new Spirits, coins or SP, or maybe some new music, then it just seems a bit pointless. At the very least, it should have a leaderboard, not just tell you your GSP.
As for Stage Builder, all I ever did with it is make stages that didn't return from previous games, because I don't have a creative bone in my body. Still awesome for people who enjoy those modes, I guess.
That would be great, but can't leftover data files also refer to features that were cut as well as planned future updates?
Well, if the Stage Builder does return, PLEASE give us default terrain pieces like in Brawl instead of exclusively forcing us to draw our own terrain like in Smash 4 Wii U. Not all of us are competent artists, you know, especially when forced to draw with a stylus.
Now where are my Event Matches?
Yes please loved that kind of content!
Break the targets needs to come back because let's face it the bonus stage in this is rubbish
@BlakeMorris I guess so, I just wonder whether implementing 1300 Spirit battles is really less work than about 70 Break the Targets stages. I understand more work would go into a single Target stage, but there's still 18 times more Spirit battles than that. If they use the same background and assets for each one, it would really just be the platform and target layout that's different. Maybe there's a lot more work that goes into it that I don't understand, but I think it's worth considering.
@Not_Soos to be honest it probable would be considering how simple many of them are and then when you think of lil mac in target smash old style.
on another note I would love if they gave us both types of target smash.
One of the pixelated images in the 3.0.0 patch trailer resembled a Target Test background to me, so yeah, this isn't altogether surprising.
@Not_Soos I'm pretty sure not all 1300+ Spirits have a Spirit Battle associated with them. Some are locked behind the Adventure Mode shops, are exclusively obtained by Summoning, and Enhanced Spirits don't have a spirit battle that I recall.
Yes to both. I can't explain it, but I've played home run contest quite a bit!
@Porky I think you're right about the Enhanced Spirits. I do feel there are other ways to obtain summoned Spirits, though. I currently have roughly 1100 Spirits and haven't used the Adventure Mode shops, so if there are exclusive ones, there can't be that many. (But I will definitely be checking to see if they have ones I'm missing.) I also now realize you can scrap the playable characters and alts as well. At the very least, I would estimate there are 800-1000 Spirit battles or more, which is still a pretty good lot, and they seem to be adding more.
Homerun contest would be pretty nice. Lets hope it will work fine with Piranha plant. I mean, I am totally avoiding that area of the game until the Piranha plant glitch has been solved!
Smash Run would be nice
Stage Builder is all I need.
Ah I thought this seemed quite sparse compared to previous smash Bros games. Classic and multi-man basically. It's a shame if these are all going to be drip fed. Spirit mode is basically a load of individual matches as apposed to a full adventure mode with it's own levels. 'I'm fighting kraid!' (over sized king k tool), I'm fighting a Kremlin! (Small king k rool).
But classic mode in ultimate is so good, it was about time it got a revamp and there's so many surprises in it, it's easily the best mode, plus all the characters ultimate has. It's lack of modes has made me appreciate the Wii u one more though.
@GyroZeppeli You know that free DLC is still DLC, right?
Would love to see them return.
My biggest complaint with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the lack of single player modes which make the overall game actually more lacking that any other (except maybe Smash 64).
So I would be really glad if they added more game modes back into the game.
Home Run Contest and Stage Builder are great starts. But what would be even better would be if they added Break the Targets (preferably Melee's versions), Boss Battles, Special Orders, a proper All-Star Mode and maybe even Smash Run.
But now I might be too needy.
Every time I see a rumour piece.
Really hope so.
I’ll just wait.
I always found it a bit odd that it's supposedly the "ultimate" one (leading people like NintendoLife and others to blindly and inevitably declare it as the "best one ever!!!") when it's missing Smash staples like Trophies, Target Smash, Home Run Contest and Stage Builder. I guess that's the power of branding.
Could you guys respect the fact that some people don’t want to be spoiled and not put the spoilers in the title of your article?
@Aozz101x yessss I'd love break the targets back. The bonus game in classic mode right now is so repetitive and dull. Home Run Contest should never have been left out in the first place
@Haywired The only two of those I would consider staples are Break The Target and Home Run Contest. Spirits are a pretty reasonable sub for trophies and the Stage Builder was never great.
They better. Any Single Player content to help get me back to Smash Ultimate would be appreciated.
I also hope that these updates for single player content don't stop here.
Can't be ultimate without these modes!
HRC is a staple in Smash, and it's weird for it to be missing. Hoping for a new stage builder, too, one that's more robust than the last two.
There are already so many stages that a stage creator doesn’t do it for me.
I would prefer Board the Platforms, Break the Targets, Home Run, Smash Tour, and/or Smash Run.
Break the targets or bust.
Hopefully this means Smash will continue to grow and get more modes and other content as time goes on. I love the idea of Nintendo indefinitely supporting Ultimate as long as the community keeps playing it. Imagine how different the game could look 5 years from now if they kept treating it like that. Could truly become the Ultimate Smash experience in every way if they treat it that way. I hope that we at least get Smash Run though, that mode is waaaaay too fun to let disappear and stay restricted to the 3DS.
I really hope this is true, because while Ultimate has a lot of Characters & Stages, it's kinda lacking on actual game modes. Ones like Target Break & Home Run Contest were never big deals, but they were still more things to do. I'd love to see Home Run & especially the Stage Builder return in Ultimate. Though I'd love to see any of the old Game Modes from other Smash games return in Ultimate to truly let it earn that 'ultimate' title.
@Haywired The core Smash gameplay is the best it's ever been and that's all it really needs IMO anything else is just a bonus.
@Krisi Yes, I would just be willing to pay for those modes if I had to. There’s nothing wrong with that.
@arekdougy It actually came to my mind but I doubted that Nintendo will bring it back so I didn't mention it.
Good to see that people are actually caring more for modes and not only for characters.
I hope people start wanting, and asking for more Stages, the previous Smash games had an unwritten rule that all characters should have a new one, only a few exceptions happened, I hope almost all franchises get a new Stage, and R.O.B. gets one.
@BulbasaurusRex I wouldn't worry about having to draw because unlike the Wii U, Switch not only doesn't have a touch screen that's still accessible in TV mode, it doesn't have a stylus either. As for the data being for cut modes rather than upcoming DLC, I was thinking the same thing. But I'm getting the impression that these placeholders were only added in the latest update. If so, that's pretty strong evidence.
Every other story on NL now is a rumor. It's getting a somewhat annoying. I enjoy rumors as much as the next guy, but it seems a bit much lately. That having been said, it does seem as though this particular rumor has enough supporting evidence to assume that it's very likely going to happen.
I just wish I could rearrange the roster screen to sort by franchise.
I'm still waiting for individual Break the Targets.
Don't really care for Stage Builder. I rather have them whatever stages are missing.
Home Run Contest I can take. Break the Targets, as long as it's an individual stage for every character, and not the one stage for all in Brawl or "Angry Birds" in 4, I will take. Board the Platforms with individual stages each chatacter I must have.
If Stage Builder is returning, I really hope it sees improvements. I wasn't happy with past stage builders as they didn't feel very user-friendly and overall just didn't feel really flushed out.
Okay, but wheres board the platforms!?
It’s about time. I quite like my situation here of leaking these things early but having no one pay attention. You might wish to read the other leaks I’ve made.
So yes. I said a while ago Homerun was coming back. I expected it to be out with version 2.0 and with smash run later this year. Back then I didn’t know if any other modes were returning and I’m still unsure as my experience and contacts have returned nothing in terms in modes.
Although.... one mode I witnessed involved landing an object into a hole. I first thought it might have been a new feature for Homerun contest however now I believe it could be a new mode or even scrapped entirely.
My life is woefully and purposely busy and chaotic. I can’t recall the other smash leaks I made so you might want to look through. My iOS notes that I keep topped up with industry secrets isn’t loading on my WiFi connection for some reason.
Hey did you know a new Switch is coming this year too? And that the recent Animal Crossing leak is pure baloney? I’m always mad when I see fake leaks. It talks about “no loading times” and a flexible camera. It has neither those two features. Loading is fast and you can only slight adjust the camera as it’s the same perspective as the 3DS game. This time it has surrounding areas like woods, deserts, mountains, caves. There’s a emphasis on resource gathering to build items. The new Switch is powerful but I don’t know about computer tech at all. I just know it’s 2-3 faster and will replace the standard Switch which will then be a budget option. Controllers pair quickly via NFC. You can view games via tags on the menu. Apps tagged as “apps” can be run alongside games without closing the game down. (I don’t know if it’s because of my intellect but there’s a very easy way to tell if a new console is coming out. I don’t wish to spread this “one easy trick” as I no longer work with Sony and have used this method to work out if there will be an update. It’s good for my wallet after all.
Oh smash 2.0 was supposed to have screen recording enabled. I even leaked that myself. Problem is data write speeds, smash needs further optimisation. It’s the only tech reason Switch games don’t have screen recording enabled as default.
@FineLerv that was in a pre-release build. One could arrange the roster by various things including most played. I liked that one as it showed who I didn’t play much with… alas now I think about it that might be for debugging reasons. I actually worked on a console game years ago that was a World first in being able to rearrange a fighter roster. Code wise it was just an external ini file that listed slot IDs on the left and player IDs on the right. I included preprogrammed arranging options too.
@Mynameishello Oh nice! Hopefully it makes a return in a future update. I can’t find a thing in the current layout!
What console game did you work on?
wheres my target smash
