At the start of February, Darksiders: Warmastered Edition was confirmed for the Nintendo Switch after it was accidentally leaked early by its own publisher. Now, we've got another leak related to this same game, but this time it's a lot worse.
According to a post over on ResetEra, during the same month of the game's announcement for Nintendo's hybrid platform, the "full" Switch eShop version was leaked onto the internet. Unsurprisingly, pirates took advantage of the situation, allowing them to play it roughly a month before its official launch. The "leak" is believed to be straight from THQ Nordic or Nintendo.
These pirates haven't wasted any time investigating the performance or technical aspects of the game, either. The Switch version reportedly has two modes. High-quality mode has 720p/1080p native resolution and runs at 25-30fps, while high-performance mode operates at a lower resolution and maintains 50-60fps. The size of the digital version is supposedly 14GB.
Darksiders: Warmastered Edition for Nintendo Switch officially arrives on 2nd April 2019.

Given certain YouTubers already have codes and are playing the game, at least that's what they say to explain it, is it possible they leaked the game themselves? Especially since some of them follow the hacking scene a little too close for comfort.
Well they way you guys glorify pirating and hacking it's no wonder
Another article involving hacking and/or piracy. This is going to be a fun comment section.
@wiggleronacid Welcome to Ninten.... Er I should say PirateLife. Next week they will have an article saying how pirating and hacking is bad.
@Tasuki
Come now, let's be fair. Nintendolife has never glorified pirating in any of the articles. You might not like talk of emulation but there's a difference between the two.
The siren to those that live high upon the morale high ground is sounded..... the pitch forks will be ready and it’ll be rinse and repeat in the comments section.... THIS IS THE WORST THING IN SOCIETY.
@TheWormThatGnaws Are you serious??? There are plenty of articles out there on NintendoLife that discusses hacking, moding etc. Heck they just had one on Mario Kart Wii a few days ago.
And let's be fair here cause everyone who uses emulators dumps their own ROMS. I am afaid not. Where do you think people get their ROMS for for emulators?
There are no "accidental" leaks.
so the thing can't even run an old 360/ps3 game at 60fps?
N really needs a refresh cycle of 2 years for this thing. like a phone.
unfortunately they got in bed with Nvidia which is an awful company to deal with. i'd rather have seen them partner with Apple who actually is pushing the boundaries of low powered chips.
oh well. i've already beat this game so whatever.
I can think of more productive ways to use my time than hack and pirate a nine year old game.
Look I chiselled a 50% smaller Venus de Milo out of the original Venus de Milo!
@Tasuki
Hacking and modding don't have to involve piracy.
As for the emulation issue I could go into depth about how important it is in preserving games that are in danger of being lost to time but that's an argument that's been played out a million times online.
All I know is that the wiiu version was bad
Pirates doing piracy. Anything new??
Aaah...the glorious life of a pirate! To play average games a whole month before they offically release. 🤣
https://youtu.be/u5NeXYoVtYA
@TheWormThatGnaws You're right that hacking and such does not have to involve piracy, but we all know it does almost all the time anyway.
@sword_9mm Someone can't read.
@sandman89 was it really that bad? I was considering it for wii u since its half the price of the switch version. Either way im buying 1 of the 2. More than likely the switch version I guess
I guess the question is, how many people are accessing the game? Enough to affect sales? With a normal release, one of the publisher's fears would be pirates leaking details about the game, particularly the plot. But since this game is seriously old, that ship has sailed.
Why on earth do you, NintendoLife, glorify so much what hackers (in other words illegal activities) do? Whyyyyyy?????
@nessisonett Brings back good memories!
@nintendobynature I have it on the Wii U and let me tell you it's awful! The choppy framerate doesn't make the game totally unplayable, but some of the bugs do. I eventually gave up on it after having spent more than an hour trying to get past an area where I fell through the floor every time. I made it through in the end, but the next time I encountered a similar bug I just gave up.
@Kalmaro
I can read just fine. N still needs a 2 year cadence on this 'console'.
I know they're too stupid to do it but that doesn't mean it's not the right move.
Wow! NL are now previewing pirate games?
@Strumpan Same here. I had Darksiders 2 on WiiU and couldn't get past an area due to a game breaking bug. I'll be skipping this.
Someone commits murder. News outlet reports it.
Why is the news outlet glorifying murder!
Seriously let’s be a little more grown up. Information cannot, or at least should not, hurt you.
@Strumpan thanks for the insight my friend. Hoping the bugs aren't in the switch version. I'm super excited about the game hearing that it resembles zelda. I'm getting probably right after i see NL's review. Hopefully it's before launch day so because i REALLY wana get it right away
@sword_9mm I wouldn’t mind it but they don’t need to. They will never compete on raw specs as long as they have mobile hardware.
The fact that they came out with a faster version of the 3ds should give some hope though.
I suspect the company itself leaked the game to generate a buzz. Seems to have worked.
Definitely wouldn’t want to support a game from a developer that crawled its way out of the fires of hell.
Cool! Thank god for another Xbox 360 game on my switch
@nintendobynature No problem. And I'll probably also buy it on the Switch as soon as I hear it runs OK.
@Tendogamerxxx Makes it worse when you realise he works for the company that runs this site.
@Cosats I don't see it glorifying anyone. They are covering a story users will hear elsewhere. If you plan on buying the game then its informative on how it will likely run in its final state.
@Tasuki
@Cosats
Never seen a post glorfying piracy maybe a few informing about piracy, can you back up your wild acusation?
@Baart considering they can also pirate nearly every other game avaliable for switch, do you mean
the glorious life of hackers to play any game they want for free?
@Octane Some lyrics for ya

LMFAO at people that apparently don't know the difference between pirating and modding a game. The latter is totally okay and innocent, and in fact, as most will know, a whole lot of PC games from various generations thrive upon it to this day. If not for the modding community, we wouldn't have had all these wonderful and inventive experiences.
To all the people whining about this being a port of an Xbox 360 game: this particular version of Darksiders was only ever released on Steam, Xbox One, PS4 and Wii U, NOT on Xbox 360 and PS3.
And to the people mentioning game breaking bugs: other than some minor hiccups, and one SINGLE freeze in the first game, I never experienced any weird problems in the Wii U versions of both Darksiders games.
...Aaaaand somehow I knew there'd be a dumpster fire in this comment section.
To summarize my usual opinion: homebrew/local hacking = fine, piracy = not fine.
With regards to emulation I have some of the best Arcade games known to man thanks to Mame, Fba. Try getting hold of games on PCB like Rtype Leo, Raiden fighters, Viper phase 1, without a BIG!!! bank loan. And highly likely I would never get to play these amazing games.
@Stocksy minimizing never helps anyone
@TheWormThatGnaws I've been using NintendoLife for the past decade and I've seen countless hacking, modding, and emulation articles. I even stopped using the site for a few years because of it. Now I see not much has changed.
@ThanosReXXX ok, glad you didn't encounter any game breaking bugs with this game on WiiU. I did. So there you go.
@MisterMan Well, I'd say that a game freezing on me actually is somewhat game breaking...
But I just rebooted the console, and resumed the game from my last save point. Not really an issue, if you ask me. It happens sometimes, but nowadays, people are already complaining if a game drops 2 or 3 frames in certain parts, and then proceed to call that game "near unplayable".
Small wonder that people like me, who don't get upset so easily by small hiccups and errors, make a little fun of that.
This game is incredible. A true classic. One of 7th gen’s finest. I’ve got a list of the 30 or 40 best games of the 7th generation. And every time one comes to Switch it’s thrilling. Still need Mass Effect Trilogy. Still need Batman Arkham. Still need quite a few more. But we’re getting there... Slow but surely, we’re getting there.
So nice to hear they included a Quality Mode and High Performance Mode. I love it when devs do this. You want full 1080p 30fps? No problem. You want 720p 60fps instead? No problem. Let the gamer decide whether they want resolution at the expense of frame rate, or frame rate at the expense of resolution.
That tells me this is a cut above your typical rushed port. Otherwise they would never have bothered adding a mode like that- something that very few developers have actually gone out of their way to provide for us.
@Neram Minimizing does help when you have a bunch of windows open at once.
@Tasuki Haha! Yes, the pirates of the internet were like, "I want to pirate the unreleased Darksiders game, but I'm not sure if NintendoLife would approve..." Then they logged into their Firefox browsers and went straight to NintendoLife and found an article on this site about someone hacking Mario Kart Wii and they were like, "Yes! This article on someone hacking a 12 year old Wii game absolutely proves that NintendoLife is okay with me stealing a brand new unreleased Switch game! Just the confirmation I needed! I mean morally, they are the exact same thing! Now I may pirate Darksiders, knowing I have NintendoLife's approval!!!"
@sword_9mm you cant read because in the article it states that the game runs at 60fps in one of two modes.
When the boobs call you to arms, you go.
@TheWormThatGnaws And that's just an excuse people use to justify stealing other people's works. So yeah nice try
What's with all the whiny little babies in the comments?
Throwing a hissy fit because they report on a leak, apparently all these people think we will go to hell for talking about this stuff.
SMH...
Seriously, this kind of news are not the reason most of us visit this website.
@Tasuki
Remember when the Nintendo Playstation was modded to get it to work? And then there was a homebrew game made to test the disc drive? In a way that's also hacking. Pirating is not hacking. Pirating is pirating.
@Pizzapasta Well said. It tickles me that folks think Merely reporting on something legitimizes it.
I’m genuinely curious if any offended folk ever used a VCR to record a television broadcast. Or discussed with friends and family any crimes or otherwise uncouth activities that were of note at the time. If the answer to any of that is yes, then wouldn’t the application of their logic here render them an accessory?
I’m still probably not going to buy Darksiders because I beat it and don’t feel like another romp. But don’t worry, the pirates didn’t influence my decision here. The fact that the game itself offers me no replay value is to blame.
The high performance mode will definitely be the one I use! I am sure that graphical fidelity won't be diminished horribly, especially when the trade-off is 50-60 fps.
@sword_9mm they redid the graphics so that's the reason, if it was a true 1:1 port then you would be right.
Sucks considering the series is always in danger of disappearing altogether. Every sale counts!
Hacks are newsworthy. Imagine the media didn’t cover the most egregious hacks for any industry, it would be much harder to hold companies accountable. It’s news, bad news, but still news. They’re just doing their jobs.
Do what you want 'cause a pirate is free
You are a pirate!
Yar har, fiddle de dee
Being a pirate is alright to be
Do what you want 'cause a pirate is free
You are a pirate!
@Tasuki
For some years I have been buying my games because I can afford it, and because I do not have time to play too many.
But when I was a kid with no money, and played half of my stuff without paying for it, I did in fact, surprisingly ALSO dump my own ROMs on DS just so I could have all my games in a flashcart instead of carrying the cards around.
So well.. people DO dump their own ROMs too. SOMETIMES, I know.
@JaxonH You are absolutely right! Well done to their dev team!
@Reignmaker Someone is in the spirit!
I wish more Switch games gave the option between quality and performance. A lot of people are split between preferring resolution or frame rate. Let the player decide. Well done, THQ Nordic. I wasn't really considering this port but I might pick it up now.
Pay for the games you liked, in order to support its. Pirating the game is stealing the developers effort, worst than the theft in real life, worst than the human.
Modding the game is different. It help the games more popular and variety
@TheWormThatGnaws your just trying to move the goal post by having a pointless argument about the difference between Piracy and emulation. How about for one in your life you do the right thing and just say yeah Piracy is bad and Nintendo Life making more people aware of it doesn't help anything. Do the Right thing.
@TheWormThatGnaws Also whoever are the people liking this comment do the right thing and admit Piracy and emulation of products a company is trying to sell is morally wrong and is anti business.
@ClampedDownHard nah, they would have done it then, they just didn't know
@LoveEmpath
Nothing wrong with being anti-business when they're being anti-consumer.
Piracy will always exist!
I pirated LOTS of games in the past and to be honest I do not regret it.
Now when I earn money myself I buy all my games, consoles etc. I even buy copies of the same game for different consoles.
I am 100% FOR emulation because I want old games to be preserved.
For those so morally high on their white shining horses please do not pretend you know business. The companies are making money just right so calm down.
So.... Is it a buggy mess like the Wii U version or is it worth buying?
I’m going to quote @Nehalem for anyone who missed it
“Someone commits murder. News outlet reports it.
Why is the news outlet glorifying murder!
Seriously let’s be a little more grown up. Information cannot, or at least should not, hurt you.”
@electrolite77
They way some people act around here, murder is a victimless crime in comparison to piracy
@nintendobynature just a buggy glitchy meh game. But who knows maybe switch version will be better
I saw a guy playing it on the bus already! it looks and runs great on handheld mode! I will be buying this game
Some people never fail to baffle me. First off this site is a Nintendo Switch NEWS site..... This article like it or not is...... Yep you guessed it Nintendo Switch related news. I didn't see any glorifying to piracy. Some of y'all act like if you bury your heads in the sand big bad piracy will go away. How about looking at the bigger picture. How did they access the game? Are there flaws in the eShop we or Nintendo need to know about? Nintendo Life did their job they reported on Nintendo news. Don't like it don't click the story.
Come on people, it's not that hard! If you don't like an article, don't read it!
Moaning about it in the comment leads to more comments which in turn leads to more clicks, because an article with many comments is more likely to be clicked.
@Knuckles-Fajita Being part of the 3DS hacking scene I can tell you that the way the eshop on 3DS works allows this to happen unfortunately, soon as a game is listed on the eshop even for preorder all the files are there ready to go and just need to be decrypted. I would have to assume they didn't do much to change how the Switch eshop works.
@Tasuki Do they give any link to download the game ? Do they say that pirating games is good ? No, never
So quit your bs, I don't understand why people get triggered whenever somebody talks about piracy, modding or whatever
@sword_9mm If you could read them you'd know the game can run in 60fps, which was your complaint.
@shaneoh
Sad but true. A lot of Helen Lovejoys.
Pirates disgust me.
Look at them having fun playing games for free that aren't even out yet. That's filthy.
@HumanDog technically this has been out since 2016 and its a remake of a game released in 2010 so it's hardly that big of a loss. they already made the bulk of the money that they where going to make off of it and now their just trying to milk it for more. regardless, it's going to be more of a big deal when this happens to pokemon sword & shield because after it happened with all of the main series 3ds pokemon games it's doubtful it won't happen with the switch ones as well
@Tasuki Hacking old/spare consoles breathes new life into them, nothing wrong with that.
@sword_9mm Well it depends on a companies willingness to actually properly optimize a game.
Arrrrrrrrrrr!!
