Hyper Light Drifter is one of the Switch eShop's truly brilliant experiences, with its gorgeous visuals and challenging combat making it a great addition to anyone's library of games. Now, the game's universe is set to expand with a brand new TV series.
Speaking to Polygon, the game's creator, Alx Preston, has confirmed that the show is currently in the works and that Adi Shankar - executive producer on Netflix's Castlevania series - is also involved. The pair are in the process of searching for writers for the show and are currently trying to figure out how exactly the game will translate to TV.
Preston says, “The difference between a series and a game is vast in a lot of ways. Hyper Light as a game was pretty atmospheric and kind of overbearing at times. For a series, the question is: how do you sustain and keep your attention on a non-interactive run? Does it get really, really dark and serious? Does it have some levity?”
Polygon explains that, just like the game, the series will likely be influenced by Hayao Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli films, particularly in terms of the show's storytelling. Preston notes, “There’s still a question of how much dialogue we really have, if any. Could it be a more silent series or would we have voice acting? Considering Hyper Light was wordless, there’s an idea there of how much that would carry over to a show.”
At this early stage, there's no word yet on when we might get to see the final product. Rest assured, though; its creator says, “We’re going to make it cool.”

This is amazing news! Absolutely love Hyper Light Drifter and I will watch the heck out of this. I'd love it to have no dialogue to be honest, would match the tone of the game really nicely. Looking forward to hearing more!
Yea, no dialogue please
Whoa. Talk about unexpected. Had to check my calendar to make sure it wasn't April 1st yet. I love Hyper Light Drifter so maybe this'll be something to watch...
I'll watch it day one for sure. Excellent new that is happening, I'm really surprised.
Wow!
That's pretty big business!
Wow! To think that HLD started as a Kickstarter and is now getting its own Netflix series, I'm impressed!
Wait...an INDIE SHOW? First Shovel Knight Amiibo, then Caedence of Hyrule, then this? The industry has never been better
Since when do low budget retro games that used to be what made up the "shareware" tier in the day get to the point of shopping for television rights?!
I really don't get the modern world....
Yes yes yes oh and yes.
Wow, no way!
Ffg gccf
Please Netflix, just dont mess it up like you did with Death Note, Pleeeeease!
On a side note, I find it a little funny that the creator is basically putting the kart before the horse by getting a Netflix production green lit and shopping for writers before having any idea about its direction or goal.
No way that won't be terrible.
That was unexpected
I'll watch it, I'm really surprised to see HLD getting a TV show, I hope it will be good
“We’re going to make it cool.” Without any other information, I am not assured by such a comment. There are a lot of ways "cool" can go wrong.
@NEStalgia What you just said, just made many people facepalmed at you.
@PBandSmelly Their is no such thing as "Indie Show" though.
Every game seems to get its own animated show nowadays. Won't the market get saturated?
