You might assume you're good at Tetris, but Tetris 99 requires a whole new set of skills for victory. It's a Battle Royale experience, with the aim not being to rack up a high score, but to simply be the last person standing at the end.
Because of this, there are a whole new set of tactics needed to triumph, and with the Grand Prix and Maximus Cup events on the horizon, now's as good a time as any to make sure you've got all the right moves for success.
With that in mind, the video above is well worth a watch. Given that the people featured are all high-level Tetris players, it's not a bad idea to listen to their hints and tips, even if you think you're pretty tasty already.

in other words: git gud
My tip is not to panic. Almost any situation can be saved. Don't worry about high end tricks, just keep plugging away and that first win will come.
Bustin' makes me feel good.
I've played quite a few games of Tetris 99 and the best I've placed is 9th. Just cant seem to get a win under my belt
In the upcoming competition, I recommend you all do the opposite of everything these guys said. Also, trying playing with one hand. Or upside-down. Maybe both.
I don't really understand anything the first guy said. Seven bag randomiser?
Managed to get 2nd place but then as soon as I levelled up and my icon changed I found every match started with 4-5 people immediately targeting me. It became much harder to get even near the top 50 then.
T-spin is BS. I can see why they left it in (kind of like bug exploits in some FPS games became a design feature in later entries in the franchise since they made the games unique), but still, it's kinda BS.
It makes no sense! How is that T-block spinning through solid obstacles?!
I guess that's what I would need to finally finish Puyo Puyo Tetris story mode.
Tetris is fun, but I've played quite a few rounds landing in top 40. Now I'm level 7, and everyone is always after me.
I'm pretty sure your level has no bearing on the game. You can't see any other players level at the start and I'm fairly sure it doesn't affect matchmaking. It's only representative of how much you've played, not your skill.
Keep spinning those blocks
I never thought I was paticularly great at Tetris, but this game has shown me why I don't even deserve to live on this planet...
Or that's how I feel sometimes when I hop in a game and like 12 seconds later I'm just staring in bafflement, wondering how I died so fast.
Okay, I am not that bad. But still, I think I have gotten top 10 like... 3 times. Maybe. I can pretty consistently get in the top 30 or so. But not much better.
@Welshland just got a new personal best of 13th myself. It's tough as hell but i love it.
@dystome Yes and also just bring your pieces down fast in the same line to build a nice tower!
I’ve won twice out of 150 something games. You can play for time by constantly spinning the blocks even when they landed. This can get you out of a tight spot near the end as you plan you moves. As someone above says don’t panic and let them drop instead of fast drop once the tough gets going. Also when on attackers, you’ll send out more lines if you have more than one attacker. This is a good way to get badges fast but dangerous because you are bein attacked hard! Love his game so much. I start on random then switch to knock out just before sending off a Tetris then immediately back to random. Another Good way to get badges.
Best I’ve done is 13th place. Every time when it speeds up I just can’t help but panic and make silly mistakes
Just came first ;0) “congratulations you won a Tetris 99 battle during a special event “
My best so far (ever) is 22nd place. I got it a few minutes ago. Yep, I'm doomed.
I need to put more time into this game. It’s really fun, especially for a person like me whose not good at Tetris.
My pro tip: If you fill a row with blocks, it disappears. Try to make as many rows disappear as you can until you are the only one left making rows disappear. If you fail to make rows disappear, you will lose.
Got my win! For the record, I've been mostly ignoring the right stick and just concentrating on the Tetris.
@SmaggTheSmug Bro T-Spin is an ancient secret technique that's stronger than a Tetris. If you think thats crazy, you should try spinning a L-block! (although oddly enough, only the T's are super powered.)
I just select Attackers at the start and try to roll with that. It gets me wins and top 10 placements just fine, but there are some really good pieces of advice here, like targeting people with many badges to steal them. I'm just not used to paying attention to those mechanics in the middle of a Tetris game, but it'd be something to get accostumed to in the future, sure.
@Heavyarms55 if it makes ya feel any better, I have yet to break the Top 10! 11 is my highest finish. Absolutely brilliant game I have to say!
@SmaggTheSmug they don't really spin, they teleport themselves, but they just can do it one square at a time. You don't really see them spinning do you?
And thats Tetris Canon
