Yesterday's reveal of Pokémon Sword and Shield didn't give all that much away about the new games, but one particularly notable segment introduced the three new starter Pokémon we can expect to choose from on our journey.
As series veterans will be aware, a great emphasis has always been placed on your first Pokémon (even though you could technically store them in the PC never to be seen again, if you wish) and that initial decision can be a real challenge. Do you choose your favourite type? The cutest? The strongest-looking? It's tough, and your decision stays with you throughout the game.
But which of the three Generation 8 Pokémon have captured players' hearts right from the start? Well, to find out exactly that, the official Pokémon Twitter account posted a poll just after the big reveal and the votes are now in. You've probably already gathered as much thanks to this article's title, but the water-type Sobble has come out on top.
It turned out to be a pretty close contest; Sobble may have won with 38% of the vote, but the fire-type Scorbunny was just behind on 37%. Poor Grookey only managed 25%, so a quarter of the 212,740 votes placed in total.
But what about you? Let us know which starter is your favourite in the comments below and feel free to check out our trailer breakdown to reminisce over yesterday's events.

Grookey Gang rise up.
Im shocked at second place. Personally i thought scorbunny was the weakest design
Recount!!! Scorbunny for the win.
Grookey deserves better. It is nice to see a pretty strong split between starter popularity for the first time in years.
Really? Every single person I've spoken to have said Scorbunny
For reference that's only 4 people though
I’ll choose the Firebunny.
We always come last. These polls are clearly rigged against nature
Literally hate Scorbunny. Grookey's cool but I want Sobble, and nickname it 'Squabble'
Honestly I'm not really in love with any of the starters. Then again I rarely like starters initially, so I'll wait to see who has the coolest evolutions before making up my mind.
In the meantime, though, it's time to gobble with Swobble.
Sobble is definitely a chameleon pekemon and is probably going to look like a mix between Kecleon and Quagsire in its final form.
Honestly, for me it would be:
3rd- Sobble
2nd- Grookey
1st- Scorbunny!!
Think it’s the first time I actively don’t like the designs of the starters, but there’s time for one to grow on me. Maybe I’ll like the evolutions. Worst case scenario, I can go with Grookey as he’s the least popular so far.
Personally I love Scorbunny, he/she has a weird 90s Digimon aesthetic to him/her. Of course I may be biased as I generally adore Fire Type Pokémon.
I always start with the water Pokémon.
Scorbunny! My kids love Grookey and Sobble though my oldest likes Scorbunny as well. My husband is still undetermined
I'm faithful to Water starters, but I'm surprised that Sobble would be the most popular.
Personally I'm a fan of Scorbunny for its simple, yet sporty design.
Scorbunny caught my attention immediately.
After a couple more viewings, there is something charming about Grookey.
Not feeling Sobble very much. Though their next forms and their anime depictions may change my feelings ultimately. I chose Rowlett last gen. But Litten and its line are probably my faves
The water lizard is the best, followed by the monkey and the rabbit last.
However for me thise starters are looking similar to each other but still way better than Poplio and the fire fox.
I think I'll go with Grookey. Like cats and monkeys..
I’ve always started water except for gen 4, where I went fire, and gen 6, where I went grass.
Probably sticking to it.
whatever has the best final evo... if Scorbunny becomes something unbelievable like- like a fire/electric. hands down i'm using! same goes for Grookey and Sobble
Why is the grass starter always the least popular?
impossible to choose. they are all so beautifully round and circular. round friends
That's because Sobble actually looks like a Pokémon. Grookey is passable as it's basically Turtwig as a monkey — it could have used darker green fur. Scorbunny, I just don't even know where to start critiquing this. Heck, the name sounds like a naughty website.
Both Sobble and Grookey look similar to me, at least speaking about general shape. Scorbunny gave me some Torchic vibes initially but now I think it is the most original of the 3, though perhaps my opinion is a little biased towards fire starters.
@Quarth I can't say that's true. IIRC, in Gen V and VII the grass starters were pretty popular.
I must protect Sobble at all costs. Also, this is technically my first journey with a water starter!
I voted for Sobble though I'm kinda stuck between Sobble and Grookey, so it'll come down to the final evolution.
Scorbunny isn't that far behind them though, if they have a cool evolution (maybe Fire/Electric) it could sway me.
I'm hoping Sobble evolves into a Water/Dragon.
This poll is blasphemous.
Hmm... Tough choice.
I voted Sobble for Water Pokemon.
I like Blue color and Water / Ice Pokemons.
@link3710 Honestly, I think the split is because none of these designs are particularly good. So there's not much room for a clear winner. Lol
No, but seriously. I'm hoping their final forms redeem some of them. Because that's ultimately who we'll be looking at the most. I also hope they have a somewhat unique typing as well. I really don't want another Fire/Fighting starter.
Team Sobble all the way, but Grookey would have been my second choice. Hopscorch is in last place by some distance, at least until we see their evolutions.
The other question is: Sword or Shield? I feel like Sword is going to be way more popular. Call Freud.
Sobble is my first pick, then Grookey, but definitely not Scorbunny. I would probably go for the shield game.
My favorite is Scorbunny! It is so adorable and energetic. I moment I saw this Pokemon in the video I felt an instant connection.
Poor little Grookey, he's up holding the sad tradition of the grass starter being the least popular since little Bulbasaur first showed up.
But I like the little Grass Monkey. He's the cutest starter of the bunch, and I think I will pick him.
Grass starters need more love, and everyone knows Bulbasaur is the best Gen I starter.
I do not like the designs of any of the starter Pokemon, but I'm hoping the final evolution look cool. I'll be starting with Scorbunny, because since Pokemon Blue as a kid, I've always picked Fire first.
I'm choosing either Sobble or Grookey. Personally, I don't entirely like Scorbunny's design - it looks like its got a huge plaster across its forehead.
glad to see my favorite guy is #1 this time, unlike in Alola where my girl Popplio got so much hate
This is strange to me since Grookey is for sure going to be my starter Pokemon. I immediately fell in love with his goofy look on his face. He kind of reminds me of my 9 month old.
I'm usually a water fan, but I really like the look of Scorbunny lol. If I was going to play Pokemon S/S, he would be my choice.
where is the BUNNY GANG?!
Scorbunny > Sobble > Grookey
I've commonly stuck with fire starters with the occasional grass starter if I wanted something different or disliked the fire starter's design of that Gen. There's usually nothing wrong with the water starters; I just usually end up picking the others. The only time I recall doing a full playthrough with a water type was with Piplup in Pokemon Platinum, but I traded over a Turtwig bred from my Torterra in Diamond for my main grass type. XD
Edit: Scratch that, I forgot I did a playthrough with Totodile back in Gen 2 at one point.
@Devlind Oh, I was thinking about older gens. Bulbasaur 4-ever!
Scorbunny, ftw.
Sobble is best
I’m rolling with grookey idc 😆
@Quarth Oh, that makes sense then. Anyway, in gen 1 my picks are always Charmander, then Bulbasaur and last Squirtle. I like turtles, but I just don't like its design or any of its evolutions.
@justin233 I'm normally all over the grass starters. But I'm not sure this gen. I'm think I'm have to see their final evolution to be sure.
@stache13 It's going to be a big green baboon with a wooden hammer (and if we are lucky, a bright orange ass).
@Caryslan was there ever any doubt?
My first main series Pokemon game was Platinum. My starters since then were: Turtwig, Cyndaquil ,Tepig, Froakie, Treecko, and Rowlet(Platinum, Soul Silver, Black 2, Y, Omega Ruby, and Sun respectively)(I refuse to acknowledge Eevee as a starter, so Bulbasaur for Let's go) The trend here is mostly grass starters with the occasional water or fire type. This time Sobble will be my chosen one, since the grass starter screams Chimchar all over again but grass. We also already have a grass monkey(all three types actually),so why another one? Sorry Grookey fans.
Pretty much always pick Fire to start (except in Black/White, where I went with Water).
Though this gen, Grass leads to multiple obvious lame thinly veiled song references ("Grass Monkey", "Grookey Gang", etc.)
Huh. To me Scorbunny is the obvious stand out. Not really impressed with these starters.
Grookey is the best one. I don't really like the fire bunny tbh. Sobble seems pretty forgettable.
It's odd, I've always felt like water is my type and for the first 4 gens it was without question (even though Cyndaquil is better than Totodile ). 5th gen I didn't really care for any of them, though Snivy was probably the best, then it's just been the grass types winning each gen since.
Well, there we go. Just a starter Pokemon at the end of the day isn't it.
Grass Chimchar and Discount Mudkip are neat, but Scorbunny is probably the most unique of the three. I personally love all of them, though. Gonna be making picking a starter difficult this time around...assuming I even get the game, SM/USUM had some neat ideas/characters but were terribly bland IMO, though Pokémon has been samey to me since after Emerald, so I'm not the best person to ask.
all hail scorbunnny EVERYONE ELSE IS WRONG
I started with squirtle and will ALWAYS choose water first, for better or worse. I just really want a great secondary type. Water/normal let’s do it! 😂
I plan to pick the fire bunny, that is unless it evolves into a weird type. My guess is it will evolve into a fighting or normal type.
Scorbunny for me. Though I do like the sobbing (sobbing bubble=Sobble) would keep me laughing.
I thought scorbunny and sobble were digimon when I first saw them. I really like Grookey though.
Grookey Gang rise up!
Well as someone who kinda grew up with bugs bunny, i can't help and prefer scorbunny over the other too, though Grookey is cool too.
However for me the endstage is more important, if i consider sun and moon, i really hated this owl(sorry i don't know the english names) and loved the fire-cat, but the endstage this ninja owl was way cooler...
I didn’t like the starters straight away but after a while and seeing the artwork I’ve warmed to Scorbunny and Grookey. Sobble is just a bit wet (pun intended).
Sobble for me, love his design
Well this poll does, plenty of others say otherwise.
It was obviously Sobble for me since the first time I saw it.
@justin233 A bright orange ass, you say! Well that's it I'm sold. Grass starters for life!
Sobble reminds me of the puss in boots look
I’m normally a fire starter guy, but I would rank it
3’rd: Grookey
2’nd: Scorbunny
1’st Sobble
Us devoted grass-starter lovers are used to this kind of treatment. We shall persevere!
Betting Scorebunny only got 2nd because people expected him to chew on a carrot and say what's up doc ha ha. I almost always choose water as water is strong agains't fire and grass is weak agains't fire. But than isn't water weak agains't grass because you water grass so is water weak agains't grass lol.
Infernape, Greninja and loppuny design. I know it's hard to draw new Pokemon but please, be original.
Best boy wins it again.
If Grookey's evolution line is going to be an homage to Sun Wu Kong, he's going to be the one I pick.
Scorbunny for me. If I get spoiled on the evolutions I might change my mind tho.
Ah, so it seems my vote made the difference.
@link3710 idk if in this specific case that is a good thing tbh. If you look at them, they all look pretty much the same body type wise(circle head, circle body). Every gen we have had at least one starter that is quadroped, here we have sobble who only sometimes goes on all fours. It's just... Idk it seems like they won't look all that different till they evolve.
@ShadJV I think it's how they all look the same. Circle head circle body. Nothing really stands out about these guys quite yet. And this is just comming off of the alolan starters, and they look pretty diverse, ones just a circle, the other circle head square body (quadroped), and the last circle head and a triangle body with no legs.
#grookeygangboi
I know that Scorbunny is popular with an, ekhem, certain crowd...
Grookey gang
WELL... certain sites on the internet empirically confirm that Scorbunny is more than twice as popular. I mean. H- How would I know? I-I don't know that.
Love Scorbunny, dislike Sobble since he looks so sad, Grookey is cool but would be nice if he didn't look so plastic-y.
SO um OP....., any chance we can make these sword and shield news posts in the future with Spoiler alerts? leading up to release. (especially the thumbnail). i know nintendolife likes to make a news post about every new pokemon revealed as there leaked on the net for the games before they release. But some consumers such as myself, like to keep the new pokemon as much a suprise as possible up until release of the game. So please if possible, at least make the thumbnail for the post generic pokemon pic as to not spoil any new pokemon if ya could maybe. i would totally appreciate it. the starter reveal i suppose is fine. just for future new pokemon reveals mostly is what i mean.
@link3710 the grass type will always have the smallest fan base because it is not a great type overall
But Grookey is so awesome!
how is grookey in last ? ? ? ?
@Roibeard64 scorbunny was coolest design but I'm not choosing my starter until i see the final evolutions for all starters but if scorbunny looks anything close to the trix the rabbit cereal bunny no doubt will choose him no debate lol
