Last year, it was revealed DOOM Eternal – developed by id Software and published by Bethesda – would be released on the Switch in 2019. Not long after this, it was confirmed port specialist Panic Button would be handling the Nintendo release.
In an interview around the same time with Variety, id Software studio director Tim Willits said Rage 2 - developed in partnership with Avalanche Studios - was currently being evaluated for the Switch.
Fast forward to now and Willits has provided a one-word update about the possibility of Rage 2 coming to the Switch in the future. During a meet up with Polygon in a Manhattan bar a week ago, Willits said the team at id and Bethesda was “investigating” a Switch version of the game.
Considering how id Software already has DOOM, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and now DOOM Eternal up and running on the Switch thanks to the assistance of Panic Button, Rage 2 might be in with a chance.
Would you like to see this game make the Switch? Or is DOOM Eternal enough? Tell us below.

Are you sure about that? Me thinks Bethesda will shaft Ninty. At the very least, we will get a port made by the overworked Panic Button that may or may not be awful.
I’d buy it. Rage 2 looks awesome.
@LunarFlame17 but thats the point isnt it? Will it look as awsome on the switch?
@diwdiws I meant that it looks like a really fun game, not that the graphics look good. I mean, the graphics do look good, but that’s not why I want to play it.
I think if Panic Button is finally willing to take the plunge and cut some geometry from the game, it's certainly plausible to believe that it could look as good as Wolfenstein or DOOM. Some people might be disappointed, but I'd take a few less light bulbs and pipes any day if it means a playable, decent-looking port.
I trust Id to make a kick-ass game. And I trust Panic Button to make a superlative port.
But can I trust Bethesda? After seeing how poorly they're handling Fallout 76, I don't know if I want to support them anymore. But the conundrum is that if I don't support Bethesda, then by proxy I'm not supporting Id and I'm not supporting Panic Button's port.
Oh, bother. What to do?
Not the game I would personally want from Bethesda, but I wouldn't complain about it.
Personally I would rather a updated ports of Fallout 3 and New Vegas.
@Trvial id Software have been fantastic though in recent years and their work with Panic Button have been outstanding. I think we need to separate the developer from the publisher sometimes as Bethesda Softworks is not Bethesda Games Studio. One is the publisher the other is the developer (whose Skyrim, Switch port was rather solid). It's on both parties on why Fallout 76 was so awful, but... I don't think we should hold id and Avalanche responsible for a poor game developed by Bethesda Game Studios (who would not have anything to do with a hypothetical Rage 2 port).
I’m all for any game they can get running reasonably well on Switch.
Now. It’s a portable device. Not every game is going to be able to run on it with satisfactory graphical fidelity and/or satisfactory resolution and/or satisfactory frame rate. I never expected every game to come to a portable system. You didn’t see every console game come to PSP, or Vita, or DS, or the 3DS. Portable systems tend to get their own libraries.
But given how powerful the Switch is, as a portable device (it’s like the Xbox One X of portables), it’s actually possible for a number of current generation games to run, and basically all last generation games.
With that in mind, I’m all for any game they can get running on the system to a reasonable degree of satisfaction. Personally I think 7th gen games are a better fit, since they will all be able to run 1080p and a solid (or close to) 30fps, as a worst case scenario. Current generation games are a bit trickier and less predictable. But anything they can get running reasonably well, I definitely want to see it on the system.
Rage 2 would be a fine addition to the Switch library. I don’t know if I care enough about it to buy it on another console, but that’s moreso because I just don’t care about playing on TV-bound consoles anymore and less because of my interest in the game.
I would definitely give this game a shot if it made the switch. I will believe it when I see it though!
How about they "investigate" it on Steam first?
That was all done on Ver 1 of the SDK, they are much further down the development cycle now, let alone where N is on the hardware side..
I'd buy it as long as it's all on the cart.
I’d get it, looks crazy. And so far I’ve enjoyed all of id soft’s FPS games as of late, and I USUALLY hate FPS due to motion sickness. Doom and Wolf run so smooth though, no issues. And while Bethesda open worlds are buggy, yet amazing, I still enjoy almost everything they pump out. Glad I held off on FO76 though.... wasn’t interested in multiplayer FO, maybe co-op, but not multi.... plus still have yet to finish FO4, lol. So behind on my backlog thanks to Diablo 3 and Monster Hunter....
I dont know if its the old man im becoming making me say this but the whole thing looks like its made for 16 year olds with 5 second attention spans who love the 'crazy' aesthetic and thats cool but not for me. Now im going to go play Legendary Fishing.
The more the merrier, really. As long as it doesn't look like Ark Survival, I will never complain about another triple A game coming to Switch, especially if it's Bethesda!
Couldn’t get hooked on Rage. I just really want an actual Fallout. 3, NV, or 4.
Id definitely support a Switch version. If they can't get it to run well enough, they should comprise and port over the first Rage.
You guys would be surprised at the kind of powerhouse games that can run on the Switch. The real problem is the cartridge. Fitting a lot into a 16-32GB cartridge isn't optimal, especially if you have to force consumers to download the rest. I wonder if this will change if Nintendo can make 32 and 64GB cartridges readily available and for a cheaper price.
time for me to gripe about bethesda putting a game that ISN'T fallout on the switch again
@JaxonH I never understood the want for so many 7th gen games on the switch. If anything we need way more games that are current gen to be ported/developed for the switch. I guess I'm just one of the few switch fans tired of all the ports from 7th gen.
@GyroZeppeli Doom, Wolfenstien and Skyrim all run great. I don’t regret purchasing any of them.
When will they realize that all we want on Switch is a Fallout 4 port.
I love the use of "investigating". It always makes me imagine they're hiring some private detective to figure out if they will port this video game!
Not worth it IMO since Rage 2 is just a recycled game.
Though I would never want to discourage Id/Bethesda from bringing Rage 2 over to the Switch but, if they do I really hope they consider porting the first Rage too. I feel the same way about Wolfenstein 2. I own and thought it was wonderful but, I really wish I had the first Wolf sitting next to it on the shelf. Plus, I've heard Wolf 1 was a better game.
@faint O I wasn’t trying to say those games were bad or don’t perform well. Just that Bethesda themselves aren’t putting enough work in, it’s mostly Panic Button.
@GyroZeppeli why would bethesda shaft nintendo they pretty much have a good relationship since their games are selling quite well on the switch.
@GyroZeppeli thats because bethesda trusts panic button in developing their games to the switch since panic button has been nailing the switch ports really well.
@Optimusultimus i agree the fallout 76 backlash was well deserved but if they can bring ports of the other fallout games for switch that would be awesome.
I’d buy it if it runs well enough. I just thought this game was an open and shut case for Switch. Apparently...not....? I guess we’ll see.
Not a game for me, but I hope it comes for people who want it.
@Lthoise
7th gen games are perfect for a number of reasons.
1 Ported games have no effect or bearing on new games. You can say you want new games, but the two are not mutually exclusive. You can have new games and ports.
2 Not every new game can run on Switch, nor is every new game a good fit. Which means there are gaps left in the lineup that need to be filled. 7th gen ports fill those gaps, while still offering relatively modern games that basically look as good as Switch can offer anyways.
3 There are a ton of 7th gen games various people have missed. Even the most diehard PS3/360 owners still have games they never played.
4 A large chunk of the Nintendo fan base and portable-only fanbase never played most 7th gen Console games. Meaning there is a large percentage of gamers on Switch for whom they will be like brand new games (for the Nintendo-only gamers, and the handheld-only gamers from 3DS and Vita who migrated to Switch)
5 Even of those who have played certain 7th gen games, many want a portable version of all their favorite classics, just like people want portable versions of their SNES and N64 and GameCube VC.
You may be tired of them and, I can respect that. But I’m not. In fact, I wasn’t really into gaming during the 7th gen. I owned a PS3 and Wii, and played like 5 games, only 1 of which was on PS3. So not only do I want the ability to play these games, I want HD handheld hybrid versions of them.
At the end of the day it’s all “in addition to” anyways. Ported games are contracted out to studios for hire. Because the games have already been made, they can have anybody do the port job. Which means it’s not “costing” new games to get 7th gen ports. It’s all “in addition to”. Which means even if you personally aren’t interested, you should still be for as many 7th gen ports coming as possible, for the sake of everyone else who wants them. Since them coming is doing you/us no harm.
I would say they can port it... I'm buying it on my Xbox anyway as I'm sure the Switch version will have frame rate issues and very low rez
@NintyNate
It was native 1080p and had no framerate issues on PS3
The game is going to run and look like a dream on Switch. You buy whatever version you want to, I don’t really care what you do, but know the Switch version is going to be a beaut, and portable to boot. And the PS4 version was just 1080p 30fps anyways. Meaning the Switch version is going to have full parity in both resolution and frame rate with both Xbox One and PS4. And offer an entirely extra console-quality handheld version in the process... Like Tales of Vesperia, which had full parity with Xbox One X, yet did it all on a handheld hybrid device. Gotta love it 😍
Panic Button is overbooked, give them a break!
I dunno guys, Doom was playable and they didn't break the game porting it but it wasn't really an ideal experience. I know that its about gameplay not graphics but if you're being honest instead of optimistic it was pretty borderline performance wise and really struggled to maintain playable resolution and frame rates. I mean ultimately it succeeded and that is impressive but I don't think a lot of devs are going to look at the Doom port and want to release their own AAA games in the same state. I think Diablo 3 type ports of older games that look and run fantastic make a lot more sense to them.
@GyroZeppeli Has Fallout 76 affected you so much?
@JaxonH
Totally agree. There are loads of PS3/360 games I missed. Having them on the go, knowing they will run well and are usually improved on Switch, is a lot more appealing to me than current gen games squeezed in restricted form onto a System that can’t really support them.
Rage 2 would be a buggy mess on the Switch.
So like every other Bethesda game on every other system.
@Lthoise portable platforms have historically thrived on ports of earlier generation home titles. NES games on Game Boy, SNES games on Advance, N64 and PS1 games on DS, PS2 games on PSP... however, 7th generation ended up both arguably less represented on handhelds so far (between 3DS's lower specs and Vita's third party support issues) AND less accessible in terms of backward compatibility on current generation consoles. And that's before we talk 7th gen console exclusives like MGS4 and Tales of Xilia, practically "locked" on the hardware that's home-chained and barely even officially supported anymore.
Now that we have a portable platform that comfortably leaves Gen 7 behind even when underclocked on the go (Switch's RAM alone dwarfs PS3 into next Saturday), such ports thus start looking like no-brainers. And for those like me who value the ability to experience a franchise in order, such ports can but increase the viability of newer games.
@GhostGarrity sometimes (and as you grow up, oftentimes) it's not a question of having an ideal experience but a question of having an experience itself. When one console allows playing the game at your own pace and another allows short weekend sessions at best (and holiday/vacation sessions at worst), which do you think will be a more ideal experience in that context?
@JaxonH Techincally, isn't the switch really 9th gen, which means this gens games would be those for the ps5 and new xbox, and last gen games would be gen 8, those for the Wii u, xbox one, and ps4, so I'm hoping your statement stays true with the new console releases and that the switch can run some of them. Also, I totally agree that 7th gen games would be great for switch, as I grew up with a Wii so i didn't play any real games on it besides Mario galaxy (which i would totally play remastered on switch), because it was all Wii sports and Mario party, so not only would i play Nintendo first party ports but also those fron other consoles, as I never played any of those games.
I don't know, there's a major difference between Rage 2 and DOOM/Wolfenstein II: it's open world. Which it could be a detriment to the development of a possible Switch port.
And one correction: Id Software didn't develop Wolfenstein. That was Machine Games.
Wow, I absolutely love Rage, so I want it please...
Rage 2 The Snes version! No thanks!
@JaxonH what ya mean it was??? The game ain't out yet! Lol
It'll be ages before it comes to switch anyway and be a big pricetag, ait a few months and on Xbox it'll be cheap
Rage is underrated. But if you have seen any game play footage of Rage 2 you know it is not coming to Switch. An open world is a different challenge to a corridor shooter. And it uses the Avalanche Apex engine rather than id Tech.
The genre I'd place Rage and its sequel in is, judging by the little bits that I know, basically Far Cry. And if there's no Far Cry on Switch, then this game has an easy sale in its hands. After all, "mice dance when the cat's not around".
The game looks good and really fun, if it ever comes I will certainly buy it.
Doom and Wolfenstein 2 are great ports that I still play sometimes.
@emhardesty And this is part of the ongoing issue with Nintendo consoles: "It's always something." Either performance-related or storage-related.
For once i'd love for Nintendo to keep innovating, but not sacrifice so darn much in the process. I still remember the lack of storage on GameCube, which surely was a pain. These days we're dealing with storage AND performance issues as well.
@NintyNate
cheap
If you're broke and only care about playing a game for the least amount of money and dont care if it's the lowest value, then sure. Most people have jobs though and would rather pay a little more to get more, and having a game like this on a portable hybrid device offers a ton of value.
So, it all depends if you're a cheapskate trying to game for pennies on the dollar (and if so sell your Switch now cause it ain't the platform for you), or if you care about the actual value of what you're getting.
Not to mention, if you have no problem waiting for it to be cheap on Xbox, you can certainly wait for it to be cheap on Switch, then you can get it cheap and twice the value
@nhSnork
I was talking about the perspective of the developers, not the users. I'm not a game developer and I haven't worked on software in like twenty years so this is not a direct comparison but often at work I am asked by a customer or even sometimes my boss to do something that will produce only marginal results or for whatever reason have some undesirable aspects that will outweigh its benefits. Now in those situations I will explain why I don't think it's a good idea and I'll usually hear back something along the lines of "the customer is always right blah blah blah and if that's what I want just do it and if I don't like it it's on me" and I still refuse because my name is on my work and at the end of the day I am still responsible for the results I produce. I know that a lot of users are just happy to have Doom on their Switch but I don't think a lot of developers look at the Doom port and want to see their own AAA game with the same marginal performance.
I've not gotten around to playing Rage 1 or 2, so I definitely would love to play this on Switch if possible. Any Post-Apocalyptic game like Mad Max or Fallout I'm all for.
@JaxonH your a bit stupid ain't ya lol
@NintyNate
Dumb enough to engage with a child who disregards rational thinking and calls names because he doesnt understand intelligent debate
@JaxonH haha I'm most probably older than you ... I don't do arguing over the net it's very pathetic... Bye! 😋
@NintyNate
don't argue
No, you just call names.
older than you
That would be pathetic. At least you could hide behind your age. If you're older than me then you have no excuse for such juvenile, adolescent behavior
I’d love to see the evil within come over.
I wouldn't say no to the first game on Switch.
@PrincessBowsette That's what I meant. I'd be happy with either new vegas or 3. I don't even need both, one would make me ecstatic beyond belief.
@JaxonH, i agree. i wasnt playing much during the 7th gen. mostly handhelds (DS and PSP) and Switch is my 1st homeconsole sinds Gamecube and PS2. Only had 3ds before and still play 3DS.
i like most the ports and i wish people would stop complaining about this. as long as the ports are good why complain when other people do want it. You dont have to buy it.
Only people who are still not convinced of the Switch succes are the ones complaining about the 7th gen or older 8th gen ports.
@GhostGarrity depends on the developer as well. Some don't want to compromise the features they find crucial (like A Plague Tale which needed higher specs to accommodate the countless rat swarms as part of atmosphere), others prefer their work's increased accessibility over something that may have existed as aesthetic fluff added to account for ephemeral audience whims anyway. "Marginal" or not, the game should deliver the core experience its devs want it to deliver - and games like Doom apparently hit that plank on Switch, considering id Software's instilled interest.
