If you've been keeping tabs on Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, you'll know the team behind the game have been hard at work on the project in preparation for its 2019 launch.
The latest Nintendo Direct presentation has now revealed the game will launch in summer 2019. Alongside this announcement was a new gameplay trailer. If you've missed past news about this release, here's some information from the Nintendo PR:
The side-scrolling action of yore rises once again inBloodstained: Ritual of the Night. Play as Miriam, host of the Alchemist’s Curse, as she steals the abilities of enemies, bends gravity to her will and darts around the game’s elaborate castle at lightning speed. Here, the laws of reality – and 2D side-scrollers – don’t apply. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night emerges from the shadows this summer for Nintendo Switch.
Is this a game you've been looking forward to? Tell us in the comments.

This was an insane Direct, no one can say that there's nothing to play on Switch from now until fall. I've been excited for this particular game since it was revealed, can't wait!
It was a good NinDect for sure.
I was pretty surprised to see this one in the Direct. Isn't it an indie game? Seemed like Nintendo liked keeping Nindies separate. Maybe I was mistaken.
The PS Vita and Wii U versions of Bloodstained didn't just got cancelled, they merge to become the Switch version.
INVERT! [removed] this will be epic
They definitely polished up the visuals a lot more since the last time they showed it off.
Really looking forward to this one as well.
2019 is gonna be a stacked year for my Switch.
This one definitely looks like an instabuy for me. Looks great! Very happy with this direct. Between this, Astral Chains...announcement of Daemon X Machina demo, and the new(old) Zelda...this direct was very good IMO.
This, Mario maker, astral chain and of course links awakening were my highlights. Hopefully they're spaced out a bit
This has been so long since i kick started this. But man, looking at that, it is gonna be worth the wait! this looks awesome!
Seems like all the wait and delays were the right choice. Definitely looks more polished since I last saw it. Can't wait!
@WaveBoy really?? This game looks great. I cant even wait
@WaveBoy Yeah, I still don’t think her animation looks natural, but I’m still really looking forward to this game. You know, since Castlevania is long dead through Konami
@nintendobynature Astral Chain was a wonderful surprise. Totally gave me ‘80s/‘90s anime vibes, like Akira, Bubblegum Crisis and Dirty Pair.
Hyped!
It looks more polished graphically (though still underwhelming) but the speed of gameplay looks more like a modern metroidvania, so they did heard the complaints. I’m willing them the benefit of doubt.
I'm waiting on some feed back when this title drops, for me it looked like I will either love it or hate it can't tell yet.
The trailer certainly made this look good, as a 100$ backer I certainly hope it will deliver on the Metroidvania action I've been missing since Order of Ecclesia.
Every time I see more of it, I think it looks less good.
Looks great, stuff like this is exactly why I have a Switch.
5 years counting anyone???? They better after all this time give a Physical Option as well.
Sooo happy this is finally happening.. it took so long to come out. I’m not kidding, the following things have happened in my life since I backed this game way back when:
I was living in my parents house, moved out and lived in two different states across the country, I got married, got a dog, had 3 apartment leases, and bought a house. I was almost a totally different person back then. Am I living that fast or did this game just take a while?!
But it’s finally happening!
It looked amazing, I'll definitely get it once I'll get my switch this summer!
I am excited to experienece a new Castlevania-like game from IGA.
Happy to see it's looking good. Still don't regret withdrawing my backing funds from it, though.
And still have'nt recived my "free" download code for CotM... What gives?
@E_maniac did they send you your free download code for Bloodstained : Curse of the Moon yet? (And what platform did you choose?)
I am happy it is coming out soon, looks nice, although I would prefer 2D sprites.
The artstyle just looks really generic to me but if the gameplay is good I may pick it up.
Hope it’s getting a physical release day 1 for me
Loving the visual style and I'm looking for how they will integrate the RPG mechanics, it looks like it might be the game to finally scratch my Aria Of Sorrow itch
Something about this game just looks wrong.
I really dislike the graphic style. But I hope the rest makes up for it.
@ReaderRagfihs That's how you know she's badass.
This is looking a lot better than past videos have shown. I feel like it still moves a bit too 'smoothly' and doesn't have the snappy panache that it would have had in a true 2D graphical style like the GBA/DS IgaVanias of the past, but oh well. I'm still interested enough to put it on the buy list.
I still think the animation of this game looks off, i've said it since early development and they have stated several times that it's been reworked. It still looks the same. The offshoot 8-bit game was so good that this has been completely overshadowed in my book.
@LUIGITORNADO cool
This looks soooo good, but there's some very good games that I'm looking forward to coming out around that same time. As much as I don't want to admit it, this may be put on the back burner.....kind of depends on it's exact release date.
@Hor Please mind your language!
I can understand complaints about the way the game looks and moves. That''s always been a bit of an issue. I've also not liked how the project has been managed. The Wii U stretch goal was unwise in the first place in 2015. I hope they didn't spend much trying to make that happen. The cancellations of the Wii U and Vita versions, unfortunate as any cancellation is, made sense as they are closed platforms that were losing support and distribution outlets. But at least refunds were offered there. But to drop the non-Windows PC versions(and no refund option), which were advertised day one as I recall, and to do it so suddenly and so late in development was extremely bad form and unprofessional. My enthusiasm for this project is long gone. We'll see how it turns out, but I wouldn't be too surprised if it disappoints.
Insert "It's happening!!!" gif. Finally!
@Octane...wow, that last post is really fun if you read it out loud
@Heavyarms55 This is one of those cases where "indie" means nothing anymore. Full commercial studios call themselves "indie" because they don't work as part of a conglomerate studio, but they're not indies, they're commercial studios.
In this case, I don't know if it's getting a retail print, but it's with a full retail publisher, 505 Games, so not really an indie anymore with a total publishing package and a major (if B-tier) publisher. Like Unravel being "indie" but is really EA putting it out there.
Man, I hope this lives up to all the competition that has been springing up (dead cells, hollow knight, etc). Should be an incredible game if it has Curse of the Moon quality gameplay and maintains the 60 frames per second responsiveness that that game has!
@WaveBoy
I agree, and I think the issue is they kept smooth 3D animations instead of intentionally cutting frames to leave space for imagination to fill it in. Old sprite-based animations either have detail missing (visible pixels) or few frames (not 60fps, not even 30 sometimes) so our brains fill in the blanks and we get an amazing time. Same reason why even though cinema movies are 24fps and if you pause them all frames have lots of blur, it was pretty much kept that way because then the movies seem more "real" when the spectator's immagination fills in the blanks.
Some modern 3D games are more polished in that sense, so the animations have frames removed and/or blurred on purpose. King of Fighters series comes to ming. Final Fight too I think.
They should have used this technique in Bloodstained, but maybe they were already taking too long as it is.
@Gowtu_Games
yeah got the download code a long time ago (for switch)
i had originally kickstarted it on wii u but i changed it for switch when the cancellation was announced.
Really enjoyed the NES style gameplay but i'm sure its not gonna be as good as the main game. very excited!
Thought the Bloodstained No. 9 footage was underwhelming AGAIN until the dragons started rolling in....that was Bayonetta-cool.
This and Dragon Quest Builders! Woo Hoo!!!
@Alto: haha, YES! What a journey since backing: 2 cities, a second dog, 1 job, 2 titles within, 2 leases, 1 marriage, 1 house...1 son! When it comes, I probably won’t even want to open it for risk of waking up!?
This game looked pretty sweet during the Direct.
