Peripherals come and peripherals go, and one of this we thought would be going very swiftly out of people's minds was the NES Controllers for Nintendo Switch. They look clunky, they were reportedly only going to work with NES games via Nintendo Switch Online, and the price didn't fill a lot of fans with confidence.
Well for some reason one of those is entirely false, and it's all down to functionality. Despite previous statements, the controllers actually appear to work universally on all games for the console, even if something like Skyrim demands slightly more inputs than the controllers can provide. But what's even more surprising is that you can even use the controllers when they're still attached to the system, even going so far as to have the right controller's D-Pad function as a Home button.
It's bizarre to say the least, so if you'd like to see them working like this in action, make sure you check out the video above, where we do just that and more.

People will hack it to work with more complex games soon enough.
NES Controller BOTW speedruns, here we come! XD
This is so wrong.
@IHateTombs Same reason people try DK Bongos on others games, FOR FUN! XD
SMASH BROS ULTIMATE WITH NES CONTROLLERS!!!
Now if somebody could hack Pokemon Let's Go to work with two joy-con not connected to the Switch, like handheld mode but in tabletop or docked, that would be great thanks. Not playing it again until they "fix" it, and I do mean fix. Having you play it in portable mode with 2 joy-con only to force you to Switch to 1 joycon is not something I have ever seen in any Switch ad ever, it's always the same control scheme whether in or out of the dock in the ads. They forced it to be broken. I'm not asking them to add anything that isn't already coded into the software, just let me disconnect the joycon and have them work as if they are still connected. Simple.
What for?!... That looks painful.
Also, that banner image is historical. Lets pay $110 dollars to play an old $28 WiiU game with hand cramps 🙄
@SomeBelgianGuy Smash Ultimate really needs GameCube controller joycons for maximum competitive advantage.
Doesn't surprise me, but boy does it look stupid.
@Medic_alert I don't know. After 2 hours playing in docked mode my hand, thumb and wrist hurt so much I stopped. When they still hurt the next morning I decided to not go back and hope they fix it, b/c it's just stupid the way it is, the human hand isn't meant to work that way, that's why we have two hands. My son has only been playing in handheld mode but I didn't buy a $300 system with a dock and hook it up to my 52" 1080p tv to play it in handheld mode. I understand why they made it as an option, it matches the Pokeball Plus layout, but I'm not playing w/ a Pokeball Plus, I'm trying to play with 2 of my 4 Joycon. Not adding in additional control schemes is one thing, but turning off ones you already have is going way too far.
I would had buy this if they didn't cost as much as another game especially since it required being a membership to buy it.
I'm glad they did this, I was against this because of the initial thought that it wasn't supported. Now I'm leaning on it's pretty cool....Ninty you just gotta buff up that NES library at a faster rate.
That looks uncomfortable.
@purpleibby They're basically just pro controllers. With less buttons. I think disabling them in other games would just have been more difficult for them so they thought "why not?".
Would be great for Arcade Archives Donkey Kong and Punch Out (two games with simple controls that can play vertically).
@IHateTombs Thank you! Glad to see (read?) that there are still some people in this world that aren't sheep.
Can I use the d-pad in fighting games like the Street Fighter Collection?
Having the NES controller on the left and a standard joycon on the right sounds like an ideal setup for that.
So now we can finally play handheld with a d-pad.
I'm going to take credit for this article's tagline because of the tier list I posted earlier today.
nes controllers hurt your hands why would I want to go back to that outdated hand cramping design?
They are cool to play around with but albeit not functional for the most part other than the NES Library. Still, fun to have and I hope Nintendo keeps doing things like this.
Can't wait for a Dark Souls speedrun using a single NES controller.
If these were 20.00 bucks cheaper I would get a set, to me 60.00 is just a bit to expensive though watching Alex play Sonic Mania with a NES controller made me want to own a set., LoL. The Switch pro controller is my favorite controller of all time I love it, it is just awesome I rarely use my Joy Cons for any game the only use my Joy Cons get are when I play in handheld and honestly I play my Switch docked way way more than handheld.
I’m glad I was never suckered into buying this dumb contraption. My pro controller cost me the same and I love that it works with all my games
