Mario might have previously been known as a plumber, but nowadays he's more of a jack-of-all-trades. In 2017, the official Japanese Nintendo website even clarified the Mario brothers had moved into other areas.
When this news eventually spread, it naturally caused a lot of confusion. Nintendo has followed up on this by sharing a list of Mario's seven jobs. Take a look below:
- Plumber
- Doctor
- Racer
- Martial Artist
- Professional Baseball Player
- Soccer Player
- Basketball Player
We can't help but wonder why there's no mention of him being a tennis player or a carpenter. At the very least, we can rest easy knowing he's officially recognised as a doctor.
What do you think of this list? Are there any other areas Mario has worked in over the years that Nintendo left out? Tell us below.

To this day I've never seen him work as a Plumber
After the events of Hotel Mario, Mario formed his own hotel chain in the Mushroom Kingdom. He called it the Mariott.
I'd rather have Mariocare than deal with the NHS or ACA.
@Mrtoad Very few things make me happier than silly Hotel Mario jokes/puns.
In my headcanon, Dr. Mario is a third Mario brother who dedicated himself to medicine and has little interest in adventures.
@CharlieSmile If the only choices are Mario's communism or Luigi's ”ecosocialism ”, I'd rather become one of Bowser's minions.
It might just be a side gig, but Mario is also a boxing referee.
He is also a referee, a dancer, a womanizer, he knows how to throw a (mario) party, he is super strong not only a martial artist he destroyed casstles, giant monster he threw a big dinosaur (bowser) by grabbing his tail spinning him around, and aims perfectly towards the bombs.
Is there anything this plumber cant do?
@Yasaal Technically he and Luigi were cleaning pipes in the original Mario Bros.
I guess those are the jobs he's currently holding, since he's also done some generic manual labour in the past (like in that Game & Watch where he and Luigi packed bottles).
No wonder he is on shrooms.
What about boxing and tennis referee?
I was actually pondering who earned more last night. On one hand Plumber Mario is a tradesman and therefore earns a packet fixing leaks and boilers, but Dr. Mario has a PhD and is better educated.
Guess Mario Tennis and Mario Golf aint canon then!
@Yasaal: If I remember correctly they did some plumbing in Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga
Demolition? Builder? Olympic athlete? Not sure martial artist is really a job in this case, more a hobby like Karting...
@Fuz He was a Carpenter in the original Donkey Kong XD
I have no idea what soccer means, but he sure can play football.
I have never seen him do any plumbing, so it might be a stripper act.
I would also add:
Tennis player as you said
Professional Golfer
Model (his portrait can be found in a link to the past)
Pest control with all that goomba extermination
Princess bodyguard/fetcher
Athlete (he could easily beat every single Olympic record)
Why is he only a professional in baseball? And speaking of sports you forgot to mention he's a golfer too. Or is that only a hobby of him?
Boxing Referee unless punch out changed.
@Fuz no. the builder outfit comes from Super Mario Maker.
@Yasaal He’s sort of one in the original Mario Bros. as he is down there to unclog the pipes, which are full of koopas and insects. He and his brother are also seen with plumbers tools in the offbeat, live action sitcom half of the (‘80s) Super Mario Bros. Super Show. He and Luigi also reference plumber things in the cartoon half.
Darn Italian Americans coming over here taking all the jobs....
I thought Miyamoto confirmed a couple years ago that his medical training was less than legitimate.
I find it odd that they didn’t call him a tennis player or golfer, seeing as he participates in those sports far more regularly than basketball or baseball.
He's also a kidnapper, as he captured Cranky Kong in dk jr
He started off as a carpenter in Donkey Kong before trying his hand at plumbing in the original Mario Bros cleaning out the pipes with his trusted POW. He was a construction worker in Wrecking Crew, boxing referee in Punch Out, Pinball Wizard (?) in NES Pinball. I've purposely left out sports interests he may have.
Bit more research for this article is required methinks.
What about rescuing Princesses? I thought that was his main job! 😄
And yet he STILL manages to teach typing in his spare time!
He's also the CEO of a toy company.
I thought he was retired from baseball, soccer and basketball pretty much.
He was a cook in Yoshi's Cookie.
Basically he does play every sport
5, 6, and 7 could all be marked as athlete, not to mention baker, and carpenter, and superhero, and painter, and builder, etc. etc.
So yeah it is WAY more than 7 NL.
Carpenter (Donkey Kong)? Golfer (Mario Golf)? Demolitions (Wrecking Crew)? Archaeologist/Expeditionist (Mario's Picross)? Referee (Punch-Out!!)? And I'm sure I can dig up more, that's just off the top of my head...
Martial artist? What?...
So long gay bowser.
Carpenter, plumber, golfer, boxing referee, tennis referee, building demolition man, princess-rescuer, dreamworld saver, king-rescuer, doctor, waiter, chef, painter, marksman, kidnap-victim, archaeologist, celebrity cameo (multiple games), Mt. Rushmore cameo, radio dj, level-builder, ceo, mascot, adventurer, space-explorer, king, villain/kidnapper, dancer, party-host, party-guest, racer. Maybe I'm forgetting some.
He's a golfer too
@Mrtoad I would go there.
@UnseatingKDawg What's it called? New Donk Toys?
@TheBigK Did he? I need a source.
@TheAwesomeBowser: Mario Toy Company, Mario vs. Donkey Kong series. Although it wouldn't be a bad idea to open up a branch in New Donk City...
@TheAwesomeBowser Miyamoto, in an interview with Game Informer in 2012, stated that Mario's medical practice is less than legitimate. That interview is supposed to be at http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2012/09/24/miyamoto-tezuka-interview.aspx but the link is 404ing now. It was also covered on episode of Did You Know Gaming, which Nintendo Life reported here https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/08/video_did_you_know_gaming_looks_at_dr_mario_and_power-ups_left_on_the_cutting_room_floor
That's the best I can offer ya.
@RadioHedgeFund Dr. Mario is a medical doctor, which doesn't necessarily mean he has a PhD.
Although personally, I won't believe Dr. Mario is a real doctor until I see an authenticated copy of his medical degree.
@Yasaal
As far as i can remember, only in the cartoons back then. Dont remember seeing mario as a plumber in game?
@BulbasaurusRex
Lol he is the kinda DR who trows all medicine hoping for them to get well.
proof is smashbros, first he kicks their asses when they are almost KO he throws a giant medicine as a final smash (as if anyone can swallow that)
@TheBigK I see.
I don't forget volleyball and ice hokey and a snow ski pro..
Oh and dodgeball pro..
