Adding to the Pokémon: Detective Pikachu movie hype, a new set of trading cards based on the spin-off series has been confirmed for release.
Japanese retailers have revealed details surrounding the upcoming set, including the image you can see down below. The Detective Pikachu collection is a subset of the main TCG series, consisting of 24 cards in total plus at least one mystery design. The packs will cost 200 yen each, will contain four random cards from the set, and will arrive in stores on 26th April 2019.
According to Serebii.net, this collection will also be released in the west through special promotional boxes. The release date for this set is, of course, designed to tie in with the main event itself; the movie hits theatres on 10th May 2019.
Another Pokémon trading card expansion has also been announced for 31st May 2019. The set is called Miracle Twin - which sheds some light on the trademark discovered a couple of months ago - and will focus on Mew and Mewtwo. For this set, Serebii reports that more than 94 cards will be included and that it will become available in the west "around August 2019".
Do you collect Pokémon cards? Would you like to have a few Detective Pikachu cards in your collection? Let us know with a comment.

Oh look, it's the Pikachu design that shouldn't work, but surprisingly does!
@AlexSora89 It's cute and fluffy, it prints money.
Now that new sonic movie....
@Kalmaro
If done right, it can still work.
Maybe I'll get a booster pack
Well, I give this movie at best a 5% chance of being good because some people on here have argued in favor of it (I previously wrote it off as no hope) honestly Pokemon cards in this style could work. I think realistic looking Pokemon still images can be pretty cool. There is some cool fan art out there.
But I still consider live action adaptations to be abominations almost certain to fail. I hate that the west has discarded traditional animation in favor of only live action and Minions/Frozen style CG. I grew up watching Loony Toons, old school Scooby Doo, Batman the Animated Series, Batman Beyond, Justice League, Tom and Jerry and then as I grew older branched into anime because Japan understands that you can animate more and more mature content. Simply being a cartoon doesn't mean it has to be a low budget kids show... I love the 2D art style, and that kind of animation allows you to pull off things that just don't look right in live action. That whole uncanny valley thing. And while there have been some films in the Frozen/Minions style I have liked (Frozen and Inside Out come to mind) I don't like it nearly as much. People claim anime all looks the same (laughable to anyone who watches a lot of it) but you could easily plop characters from Minions, Frozen and Inside Out into the same scene and they'd not look out of place. But put characters from Shirobako, Hellsing Ultimate and Code Geass on the same screen and it looks like bad photoshop.
@AlexSora89 you mean the sonic movie? I lost faith in it already, haha.
Still hideous...
Hollywood just can't seem to leave a good thing the hell alone.
Ironically, a Japanese dub might just render the film watchable, however, it's extremely unlikely to be included on the English-language Blu-ray.
@Heavyarms55
I think this movie may be good.... But I whole heatedly agree with you about the whole live action craze right now, and it's pretty annoying. When CGI is done right it looks amazing! (thinking of the new Spiderman movie, the good dinasaur, pretty much any Pixar movie, a lot of cartoons now-a-days like infinity train, Steven Universe, DuckTales)
I was excited when rumors where going around about Avatar coming to Netflix. I thought it was going to be a reanimation and adding more lore to the universe.... But nope, a live action show, because those are always good and won't be cringy at all.
I feel that many live actions shows can't or don't have that magic flair that animation can only pull off. I don't watch much anime, but the few that I have seen are so artistic and love the story and/ lore in it.
I just feel bad for those who write off animation only as a kids show, don't know what they are missing.
@Heavyarms55: I'm willing to give this movie a chance unless it's trashed by critics and non-troll user reviews.
That said, I do agree with you about the CGI craze. Some of those movies look just fine, and I enjoy the likes of franchises such as Toy Story, Wreck-It Ralph, and Zootopia. However, I'm genuinely starting to miss hand-drawn 2D animation. From what I understand, a lot of studios have moved away from it since it's more time-consuming and less cost-effective. Like you, I grew up watching a lot of those shows and find some shows that have converted to some form of computer animation (such as Arthur) very jarring to watch.
I also have no qualm with live-action films if they're done right, but I hate that it's starting to become a trend. There's nothing wrong with animation, and I don't understand the mindsets of people like my own father who believe they signify that the show/movie is a kiddie show.
@AlexSora89
Must you shove that right in our face?
Sure, my daughter likes creepy things and Pokemon. Why not?
These seem like a neat tie in if you're still into the trading card side of Pokemon
@Kalmaro
Well, the "shut up, audience" attitude they're having about it so far has only two possible different reasons behind it.
1) It's the result of a unique vision that requires our trust, in a "wait and see" manner.
Or the most likely "Fant4stic" approach, which is
2) They know they have a rushed product in their hands and just want the public to shut up about it already.
@Tempestryke
It was mostly for Mr. Mime's expression, hereby repurposed as a "GEDDIT?!" kind of goofy grin.
@Heavyarms55 Stylistic choices aside, I think that narrative is king. I was expecting to hate Detective Pikachu based on its title alone, but the trailer convinced me it might actually be a decent movie. If they're going to fully voice-act Pikachu with this Dr. Doolittle of Pokemon main character, I think it'll be less jarring for me in a live-action (and slightly nightmarish) style than if they had just done a fully animated film in the usual Pokemon style.
Honestly, it feels like a more mature film, both in style and humor, and that feels fresh for Pokemon's often overbearing child-friendliness. I get that it's a franchise aimed at children, it just seems to have gotten nicer and friendlier over time. I remember when Blue was a bully, and I wanted to beat him because he was a jerk - now every in-game rival has to be a sweeter-than-the-sweetest-candy best friend. Ugh. Bring on the nightmare world of Detective Pikachu I say, let's see what happens when the franchise goes in a strange direction, even if only for one movie.
I for one don’t think “real life” Pikachu looks bad at all. The furryness (is that even a word?) of it is cute and makes sense.
I wasn’t much interested in the film at first, but the trailer showed me that it might actually be a very watchable film.
@Blitzenexx Your father's mindset seems to be the norm in the west. From what I gather, because nearly all 2D animation in the west was geared first as comedy, then as children's programming, the idea just spread that "cartoon = children's show" and become deeply ingrained. In Japan, Korea and China (less so in Korea and China but still) that idea never really took root. Thus you have anime for kids, anime for young adults, adults and even anime porn. The east seems to understand that 2D animation is just another medium, another way to portray a story. Where the west treats all 2D animation as either kid's shows, or parodies like Simpsons and Family Guy.
I arrive in Tokyo 2 days later!
@Heavyarms55 like: I 100% agree there! It's just another medium; it doesn't have to be geared towards kids.
I'm not sure where that idea in the West originally came from as I know there are some historic pieces of animation that weren't just for kids. The only examples I can easily think of are a handful of old propaganda clips from WW II.
I do think that some of our Western ideas are a bit skewed and backwards in some cases. But hey, that's just my opinion. 😛
@AlexSora89 ...That face gives me nightmares. 0_0
@Blitzenexx Every culture has things like that. At least in this case it's harmless. Annoying but harmless.
Haven’t collected in a long time but I’d like to have this set.
@AlexSora89 option 2 for sure.
Honestly this is one of the movies I'm looking forward to the most this year because it's just uncanny valley enough to be great!
@AlexSora89
Yeah I know. I was teasing you a bit..
@Tempestryke
No need to worry, I enjoy the banterfest that is NintendoLife at times.
@Kalmaro
Yep, I'm kind of fearing just that.
@Zoomzeta
Still better than a few frames after this one.
