When any fighting game series is announced nowadays, a leak inevitably follows, often revealing information about the character roster or a surprise the developer intended to reveal later down the line. A lot of the time, these leaks can also turn out to be completely fake.
On the Mortal Kombat front, it's no different. Series co-creator Ed Boon has been dealing with this sort of stuff for years now. According to GoNintendo, there's a rumour the character roster for the recently revealed Mortal Kombat 11 has already been leaked. Sure, some of the characters on the list might show up in the game, but at this point in time there's no substantial evidence. To combat this, Ed called out the rumour and told the individual who informed him about it to bring up the same tweet after the real roster was revealed:
In a way, it's refreshing to see a response like this. Boon has basically knocked the wind out of this apparent leak and is having a laugh about it at the same time. Good job, Ed.
What do you think about all these character leaks that seem to surface whenever a fighting game is announced? Tell us below.

I think the last Mortal Kombat I played was 3. I liked 2 the best.
If only Sakurai could’ve done this for the Grinch Leak, haha
@gokev13 MK9 was like a modern take of the first 3 games with a nearly complete roster and a fun story mode that retold the story of those games, 10 played better but the roster tossed out a lot of classic characters for pretty lame new ones and had a horrible story mode.
Of course the problem with reacting this way is when a real leak happens, the sudden silence becomes a confirmation. But if they are okay with that, then I'm glad to have the fake ones debunked right away.
Though it's not a leak, I heard rumor that the Shao Kahn returning in MK11 is the same Shao Kahn (the one we follow since MKII) who killed Raiden in MK Armageddon and not the lame one who got killed in MK9. If this is true then the timeline of the old will probably connect with the one of the reboot. Can't wait to see what surprise we'll see in MK11.
It's been some time since I last followed news on Mortal Kombat, but that list above with all the classic characters kind of sound like someone "leaking" that Mario, Link and Kirby will be on Smash
@SalvorHardin
Interesting, this series really dropped off my radar since the Super Nintendo days.
I was watching the game awards and when the trailer for this was over I said to myseld, "There are 10 of these games!"
Makes me feel like I was living under a rock.
@gokev13 I played the crap out of MK2 on SNES and then even more of MK3 on the PlayStation (which was an arcade worthy port). After that I didn’t play much Mortal Kombat. Crazy that 20+ years later we are at MK11.
It's so strange to see MK news on the Nintendo fansite.
It really picked up again with 9.
Better for the creator's sanity to ignore this kind of thing. I think Sakurai's approach of just doing what he wants and ignoring the endless internet debates is best.
Joker confirmed.
@th3r3ds0x
Your comment is making me feel old, but yah I remember back in the SNES days I loved fighting games. The Mortal Kombats, Street Fighters, Killer Instinct, Clay Fighters, and last but not least Shaq Fu. Okay maybe Shaq Fu was least. Those were the days though, now I don't play fighting games a whole lot, except Smash. I love Smash.
Could they please not do micro transactions or stupid things like having Goro be a paid DLC character. Making people pay for a character like Goro who was there from the beginning was slimy on their part.
I'm just really happy we are finally getting Mortal Kombat on a Nintendo console again.
No wind knocked out of this leak at all really. There's no denial in Boon's tweet. If anything, the fact there is no denial makes me think the opposite.
Imagine if the leak is 100% accurate - what part of Boon's tweet wouldn't apply?
@th3r3ds0x I was the same, played all of the originals (1-Ultimate 3) on the SNES, still got the cartridges somewhere. Played 4 and with the invention of weapons it just killed my interest in it, especially when they did that wierd Sub-Zero storymode thing on one of them.
I still remember Striker's Brutality form Ultimate 3 - HP, LP, HK, LK, HP, LP, LP, LK, HK, HP, LK, LK
People have laughed off leaks In the past with game rosters in exactly the same way and the leak has been spot on.
"To combat this..."
I think you mean "To kombat this..."
Mortal Kombat is the 2 Fast 2 Furious of video games. How are we on to 11?
The last couple of MK’s have been excellent fighters, they really go to town with a tonne of content ... just the DLC Season Passes are expensive
@GrailUK Street Fighter would had been at 20 or 30 right now instead of 5 had Capcom not waste time making multiple versions of the same game.
@subpopz @retro_player_22 No way Street Fighter is Fast and Furious. It's more like Star Wars with so many films and versions of films lol.
@GrailUK Only reason Street Fighter didn't get that far was cause fans still love the older characters (like Guile, Blanka, and Chun-Li). Moving the series too fast would quickly retired most of them as seen in Street Fighter III where only Ryu and Ken were around as everyone else are new to the series.
That's the worst leaked list in history! It's amazing that Mortal Kombat is returning to Nintendo, I'm going to get this game day 1! And, please, put Scorpion or Sub-Zero in Smash, that way the biggest franchises in fighting game history, will finally clash!
Haha go ed tell these click bait. People to shut up till u show us the real roster
@gokev13 Yea I really enjoyed fighting games in that era as well. Played all the same ones but kinda lost interest in the mid to late 90s. I guess that was around the same time I had switched solely to PC gaming for a while.
I expect the core roster to be somewhat equal to X , and I guess there will be dlc chars as well again .. a lot of characters were absent in X and I was hoping for a bigger roster this time - ideally the full cast like a current gen „mk Armageddon“ but with new chars as well - oh and a character editor ! Wishful thinking lol
laughs in Shao Khan
"You have 4 months to guess correctly or you're excuted."
All jokes aside, I'd love a throwback roster like that list entails.
@gokev13 In which case by missing X, you missed out on a fantastic game.
But there’s still time to catch up!
@SalvorHardin Horrible story mode...? That’s a bit harsh... it might not have been the same, but it was still fine, especially when you consider how much extra content the game had elsewhere (the ‘Krypt’ for example).
@FTL the story itself just felt like they didn’t know what to do so they just spin their wheels so much that the climax felt it was the middle of the story instead of the ending, the new “kid” characters somehow felt more underdeveloped than the parade of color swap ninjas of previous games. The kypt is fun but it’s a shame they didn’t include anything like the fun videos they had back in Deadly Alliance like the documentary and cooking with scorpion.
@SalvorHardin the only thing I disliked about MK9 was the low quality cut-scenes in story mode. Even the ingame graphics had better graphics than the cut-scenes. Most of the time it's the other way around. It's a little annoying (MY OPINION). But besides that I do enjoy the game a lot . I wouldn't mind if they take a little step back and go to that one but with more polished cut-scenes
They killed off nightwolf way too early. Raiden should have allowed armageddon
I've not played any of MK 10 so I'm psyched about MK 11 coming to Switch. Would be great if Injustice 2 was also coming to Switch never played it and would love a copy on the Switch with local and online co-op modes. I've not played a Mortal Kombat game in years literally so I'm hoping this one is phenomenal it's got me in shock that we are getting 11 on Switch, though the Nintendo Switch is a perfect platform for it .It's starting to look like the Switch may have a really good year ahead of it with all the good games that have already been announced for it .
#ScorpionForSmash
@Al_Godoy “Scorpion gets over here!”
Down, up, left, left, A, right, down
Bring the blood, fatalities and one hit kills.
@JackEatsSparrows imagine having Ryu fight Scorpion. You couldn't ask for more.
It is confirmed already that panic button it's involved helping to port this? 🤔
I thought that's a given since they where hired to port 1 of the injustices games on another platform
@gokev13 You haven't missed much. The last two were pretty good, but honestly I still love playing MK II more than anything. Fighting games usually have their peak game, then its up and down from there. Tekken 3 was it for me and Soul Calibur II w/Link. After that I really didn't play any of these. Now, each new series is around $90 to get all the fighters which is steep.
@8bitforever
I don't really care to play the Mortal Kombat games at this point in time, I would probably only want to play the old ones for nostalgic purposes at this point
@FTL
I'm sure it is a great game. Hopefully eleven is good too. I probably won't play either though. My preferred fighting game is Smash now. Other than that I don't have much of an appetite for fighting games anymore.
let't hope that this new mortal kombat will be good on the switch and i think they should port mortal kombat x over on the switch.
@Al_Godoy what if they made an street fighter smash ver like game with only street fighters
