Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's new adventure mode, World of Light, looks to be a wonderful addition to a fantastic game, based on what we recently got to play in our hands on. With so much content crammed into this mode, it's sure to be a wonderful experience, and one that will keep us glued to our Switch consoles for ages.
Unfortunately, it seems you'll be saving the world alone, as co-op is not available for this mode, unlike Super Smash Bros. Brawl's own Subspace Emissary. While this may be a tad upsetting, we're still excited to experience what the World of Light has in store.
What are you looking forward to most about playing in the World of Light?

Aw. Kind of a bummer. Not like I'm short for multiplayer content in a Smash game or anything... but still...
It's a bummer, but still better than no adventure mode
That said, me and my brother had the most fun playing Subspace Emissary in co-op back in Brawl's days. It will be missed
That's a little bit of a bummer, considering how multiplayer centric the Switch is, and how team-play supportive Smash is in general.
They could've maybe let players take turns on the story levels, Mario Bros. 3 / Mario World style.
Sounds like this is the one Nintendo release this year that is not short of content, I'm looking at you Aces and Party! so seems a bit harsh to complain about not having even more Smash in Smash ultimate.
Since this mode seems to be primarily focused on Event Matches rather than any sort of Adventure Mode maps, it makes sense that it's single-player only.
Smash Bros Wii U did feature separate Group Event Matches though.
Expected, but still a pity. My most anticipated game of the year, anyway.
Its not really an issue for me.
Theirs content aplenty for multiplayer and this is catered for those who want that single player content and experience in Smash.
I can not wait for this game. This isn't awful as when I play this I'll be playing alone and when playing with my friends and brothers, I'll play normal smash. So, all good
Fine with me, got no friends
aw, But it still looks great, can you unlock characters in Smash mode from this?
@Pod perhaps I'll try the old "switch controller after every level complete/death" like ye elden times of NES and Super Nintendo. That way my friend and I can play together.
I find it funny how a large chunk of us Smash fans are introverts and couldn’t care less about certain modes not being co-op lol....I will be playing the general online multiplayer a lot though.
2 more weeks to go!
Well that sucks
Would have been cool...
Unpopular opinion; Subspace Emissary was awkward and fiddly. A platformer held back by fighter mechanics. It set my expectations for Smash Bros. adventure modes to those of a curiosity. So in no way am I disappointed. I wouldn't be even if they dropped it altogether.
I mean World of Light looks like a Smash Bros RPG fusion type game so I don't think they really could've added co-op
Players can simply take turns per battle and create custom Spirit sets for themselves. It might be a single player-oriented adventure but you can still find ways to play it together.
Also, this basically reinforces getting the game and playing it for yourself. Which would ultimately sell more copies in the long run, I believe. Which I would agree with.
@Illusion
Dude that's insane!
Seriously, kids. Don't try this at home, and keep a safe distance when oldtimers do their thing.
That's disappointing, but I'm sure there will be plenty of craziness for me and my brother to get into without it.
Doesn't really matter, Adventure Mode in Super Smash Bros. Melee was also single player only so I had no issue with this.
After seeing what it was, didn't expect co-op. You have every other game mode for that so I'm good.
Would be cool if Break The Target showed up somehow (DLC?), especially if it had a create-your-own mode.
gamechanger for me.. only wanted to play this in coop with my girlfriend
@Sephazon
Given you and @Steve_Bowling appear to have played a lotta Ultimate, I have to reiterate my question: do Spirits - as in, the individual ones, not the mode - have a trophy-like showcase mode complete with descriptions, or is it a lazy (or should I say, lazier in comparison) side thing with no fanfare like Brawl's stickers (whose guts I could not stand, good riddance)?
It'd be hella cool to finally see a Smash bio for Geno, playable or not.
Would of been great to play co op.
This is quite a disappointment for me. Brawl had co-op in its Story mode and that allowed extremely enjoyable moments for me and my brother as we plowed through each level, impatiently waiting to see a cut-scene.
I'm hoping an update will remedy this but I don't see that happening so I guess I have to compromise by switching in and out with my brother.
@AlexSora89 there’s a spirit gallery, but we weren’t allowed to check it out. Sorry!
@Steve_Bowling
Neato! Not knowing is knowing, to me. We're getting descriptions, boys!
(... or not. I'm a Smash fan, not a foreteller.)
Kinda sucks, was hoping for a 4 player story mode since Brawl had 2 player then S4 skipped it entirely and we have 4 joy con now so I wanted the entire family in on it.
I guess we'll stick to Kirby as hard mode releases next week and we're all looking forward to going back to it.
Was really looking forward to tackling this with my daughter (who loves Zelda, Kirby, and Peach). Oh well...
The more I learn about this game, the less I want it. Sad times.
Split a Joy-Con and pretend you and your partner are Siamese twins.
Can you play co op in Classic Mode though?
This is really a bummer. My wife and I were really excited to play this together. And now, the opposite of excited.
No problemo. The rest of Smash is generally pretty mp-oriented, so I have no issue with the campaign being single-player only.
People upset that you can't play Co-OP on a SINGLE PLAYER MODE...
WOW Nintendo just stop making games these people will NEVER be satisfied.
SP for the win!
Very disappointing 😒
That's a shame, my brother and I had a great time playing Subspace Emissary together and I'd assumed this would have co-op too
@Bobb You know I kind of sometimes wishes, though it's absurdly unlikely to ever happen, for something like a future "Subspace Emissary remake DLC" literally remaking the original Subspace Emissary in Ultimate's graphics and engine.
Like I'd buy that in an heartbeat even if it only features the original SE cast and didn't integrate any of the newcomers characters. Just for the chance at that solo/coop fighting+platforming gameplay.
And I say that as someone also hyped for World of Light(like... the fact there seem to be less to none of SE's platforming level is a minor bummer, but that interactive world map alone makes me hyped for the new story mode).
I think it'd be nice for multiplayer to be included in this mode. It would be another mode that supports local multiplayer. Not everyone has a good enough isp for online gaming, or wants to pay Nintendo for online play. I'm aware standard local multiplayer is available. The co-cp is a nice addition.
It's Smash, but without your friends!
#saveplayer1
@AlexSora89 I think they said in the Direct that trophies were removed because they would be too much work to develop. Seeing as writing the descriptions is the only part of development that could possibly be more problematic than the spirits, I think it's safe to say that they won't have any descriptions.
Shame from the Info released this mode will have no unlockables.
Real shame.
Was hoping playing through this gets you fighters but looks like you get them all unlocked super quick
@Euler I would disagree. I imagine making 3D models of all those characters that can be rotated and such is wayyyyyyyyyyyyy more annoying than just writing a description for a character.jpg picture.
I don't need co-op for my single player experience thanks.
Worst game ever, not buying, you're better off playing Melee instead, Switch sux, Nintendo is doomed, this site-....wait, we're not hating on this game now?
Ugh, I still can never keep up with you kids.
@Joeynator3000 You forgot "underpowered", "inevitable powerful dock", "compromises just so nobody can play it handheld", and "RDR2."
Also "It's 2018".
Would be nice if they added it but hey no loss, smash has enough. So i am happy either way. The spirit mode looks awesome and i want to play it today lol.
@NEStalgia "RDR2."
....Wut? o.o
@Joeynator3000 Isn't that an obligatory mention every time one needs to point out how doomed Switch is?
Wow, the only sad point I've had for the game but I'll get over it.
@NEStalgia ....No idea, never heard of it, thought it was an R2D2 reference. lol
@Joeynator3000 You are the only gamer who is unfamiliar with Red Dead Redemption 2. Even in the Nintendo bubble.
@Joeynator3000 You forgot “Smash 4 deluxe port”.
@Euler
I thought that, but then I remembered they could reuse some of the older descriptions - especially Brawl's as less people would notice - and call it a day. I wouldn't mind taking the For Wii U museum on the go, personally, with or without 3D models.
Not to mention @Steve_Bowling flat-out said the Gallery was unaccessible pre-release.
For once I don't have to complain about all my friends living hundreds of miles away! Nice!
Sorry to everyone who wanted co-op though.
@NEStalgia Didn't even think about that game, most open-world games out there are uninteresting to me. lol
@NEStalgia And of course "Where's all the “AAA” games? Where's Destiny 2? Where's Fallout 76? Where's No Man's Sky? Where's Metal Gear Survive? Where's Mass Effect Andromeda?"
@WiltonRoots You forgot The Crew 2 and For Honor.
@NEStalgia on the other side of the coin, when you think of the amount of money lost on producing those titles...it’s a tricky one. People want these big graphical “AAA” extravaganzas. Yet to make them takes years and costs a bomb. The companies have to monetise them to recoup the money. People don’t want to pay that money. Something has to give. I can’t help but feel another crash coming on.
Smash Ultimate already has so much singleplayer content that can be played in co-op that I don't mind having a singleplayer mode that really is just for a single player.
Owning both a Switch and PS4 my wife and I are always looking for games we can go couch co-op. Bought this for her for Xmas and was really looking forward to playing story mode together. Bummer.
