Following early reports of surprising sales success for Super Mario Party, Nintendo's Q2 2019 financial briefing has now revealed the new Switch title sold a total of 1.5 million copies in the month of October.
Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa said the latest entry was a return to form - with the game channelling the series' roots and providing less complicated game mechanics. He also noted how it was a "finished" game with wide appeal:
It is a title packed with gameplay enjoyable by all, and that speaks to the ‘play anytime, anywhere, with anyone’ concept of Nintendo Switch. It is a finished game with an appeal that is immediately apparent, and a game that everyone from regular gamers to newbies can enjoy playing together. We expect it to become an evergreen title for scenarios like parties where people come together.
Furukawa went on to reiterate how the series had an extremely strong start compared to previous installments and had built up plenty of momentum ahead of the holiday season. He also confirmed Joy-Con sales had increased because of the release of this title, following reports of shortages on select websites.
The good evaluations by consumers have been borne out by the recent sell-through. Global sell-through has exceeded 1.5 million units following its release on October 5.Super Mario Party had an extremely strong start compared to other installments in the series and has built up momentum ahead of the holiday season. We are also seeing an increase in Joy-Con sell-through with the release of this title.
Are you at all surprised by the sales of Super Mario Party? Were you one of the many Switch owners to purchase the game in the month of October? Did you pick up more Joy-Cons as a result? Tell us in the comments.

1.5 million is a great number.
But, Nintendo SHOULD make ALL Mini games are playable during Online Play.
Not jut limited by several of Mini games.
Will be picking this up around Christmas time as my brother and his gal will be down. Would assume most of their sales will come from the Holliday period as everyones around to play together.
"Joycon sales increased because of Mario Party."
Um, joycon sales increased because Best Buy had them for 20 bucks off in Canada! I bought two sets, now I can have a Neon Red and Neon Green switch for Christmas! (It actually doesn't look that good in practice.)
It is a bummer that online isnt more expansive, but it is really all about the local play! I’m lucky to have a lotta buds around to play with. I’ve been having a lot of fun with the party!
side note: I don’t see why people complain about joycon only/no handheld mode. It makes total sense with the way the game is set up- also you’ll be able to play 4 player w just 2 con so that’s a no brainer:)))
I figured it would sell well, but that's better than I expected! It's still a game that is really only fun with at least one other person.
But I guess most people are more social than I am.
I played it for about 5 hours the day after it launched with a friend. But haven't really had the chance to play it since, because playing it by myself in the evening after work just isn't fun.
I don't have enough people in my circle to warrant much use out of this game, so I'll be skipping it...
Well hey, that's super.
Wow big number. I'm really enjoying it too, so I have to say its well deserved.
Im really having my fun with the game, its not the best installment in the series, but its a lot better then the last couple of games
This looks like an ideal candidate to play one afternoon with siblings during thanksgiving or Christmas break, but not a game I’d like to own at all. So many games like Mario Tennis Aces, ARMS, and now this that I’ll just wait until they’re Nintendo Selects to pick them up.
I want to like it and buy it, but the lack of content is holding me back. I'll keep the game on my radar and get it when they add bigger boards and more custom options (let you change cost of stars). For some more strategic fun.
By use of the words "finished game" it kinda implies no DLC planned.
Mario party is SUPER.
LTD sales of all major Mario Party titles:
Mario Party: 2.70 million
Mario Party 2: 2.48 million
Mario Party 3: 1.91 million
Mario Party 4: 2.46 million
Mario Party 5: 2.17 million
Mario Party 6: 1.63 million
Mario Party 7: 2.08 million
Mario Party 8: 8.85 million
Mario Party DS: 9.31 million
Mario Party 9: 3.11 million
Mario Party Island Tour: 2.68 million
Mario Party 10: 2.19 million
Super Mario Party: 1.5 million sold-through in 1 month
Super Mario Party will outsell all other Mario Party entries outside of Mario Party 8 and DS by the end of the year.
@gcunit That scares me a little bit too. It’s a great game, but it’s definitely light on content. I need at least 2 more boards.
I get a feeling this game will be popular around Christmas too...
@Guiltygear I really hope they won't add bigger boards. The game is not designed for it, unless you do more than 20 rounds.
I wasn't planning on, but after picking Super Mario Party up at launch I've had a lot of fun with it! Admittedly I've only played it couch co-op with the missus and a few friends once a week or so but it's a solid party title and i'm glad the sales numbers reflect this.
I've been playing this a lot with the kids. It is great and has become their 'go to' game at the weekends.
I would love to own this, but I don't really have anyone to play it with (friends aren't Nintendo gamers, wife is not really interested in games other than a couple of times a year and my children are only 4 and 2); add in the fact you can't play in handheld mode and I very frustratingly will have to pass on it
Sounds like this is a pretty good game! Haven’t bought it only because I don’t have a lot of time to play with friends. Definitely will be renting it for parties though!
The only Mario Party this might fail to outsell is DS and 8.
I’ve enjoyed the return to form, the minigames are great and the game looks polished as hell, but the boards are way too small and too few. A step in the right direction for the series, to be sure, but it’s not quite there yet.
It's not a high priority for me personally but I know I'll get it sooner or later, if only for when the kids have sleepovers.
It seems like a great game that a lot of people on the internet whined that it is not a good game
This will be good to have for thanksgiving and Christmas parties. Or just any party, for that matter.
Cool, but their online portion is a superior amoeba banquet joke. I mean, you can't even play 2P online in the mariothon, even with just those 10 games, which is insane. Don't even know why they bothered with that mode.
My family has been having a lot of fun with the game, the kids seem to like it a lot better than 10 (but they loved that one as well). I think it has a good amount of content and variety but at least one more board would have made it considerably better.
I didn't even realize though that I needed a game that let you work together to put 8-bit Mario characters together until just recently.
@Saego Bigger boards is must imo, and they could add options on how much a star is and many other options to make big boards fun!
