Can you believe it? Super Mario Odyssey is one year old already, as it's now 27th October in Japan. It seems like it was only yesterday we were eagerly anticipating the game's release on the Nintendo Switch. At the same time, it also feels like a lifetime ago as we've played many other games since.
In celebration of the big occasion, Nintendo's Japanese Twitter account has released some special artwork (see above) and an instrumental dance version of Jump Up, Super Star:
In the UK, the official Super Mario Twitter account is promoting a snapshot contest to celebrate the one year anniversary. The contest is open until 30th October, with the winners to be announced on 12th November. Here's a bit about it:
The theme for this round celebrates the one year anniversary of Super Mario Odyssey – it’s ‘Yourfavourite Captures'. So, find the things you love to Capture most and snap away! Get as creative as you like!
Upload your best shots to Twitter or Instagram before the end time, including the #OdysseyJournal and #SuperMarioOdyssey hashtags
After the closing date, we’ll select our three favourites and feature them on the official Nintendo website, and our Facebook and Twitter pages!
In case you missed it, last week Nintendo added new snapshot filters and a new zombie outfit to Super Mario Odyssey to celebrate the spooky season. The outfit will set you back 5,000 coins and the headwear is priced at 3,000 coins.
Are you still playing Super Mario Odyssey a year later? What do you think about it now compared to when the game launched? Tell us in the comments.

I haven't played since I beat the story mode. After seeing the end I had no desire to collect more power moons.
@NESlover85 me neither. Way too many Moons to find.
One of the best games ever made. I am normally really into zelda but the newest entry in the mario franchise topped the newest one of zelda.
I just can't imagine a game that brings me more happiness than this one.
MAN I REMEMBER HOW F***G HYPED I WAS LAST YEAR!
I didn't even think I would play a game in 2017 that I enjoyed more than Breath of the Wild.
Honestly I can't wait for Odyssey 2 to just blow us away!
Not one of my favorites... Prefer 64 and Galaxy.
@Ensemen I also prefer it over Zelda, and I played them to exhaustion (80 and 150 hours respectively). Zelda loses its charm and variety before you reach the final boss, while Odyssey lasts enough in the post game without feeling repetitive.
That said, both are excellent games.
I have this tied with Sunshine as Mario's worst 3D adventure.
I’ve been playing it again recently. I really enjoyed this Mario game. One of my favorites.
One of my favorite 3D Mario games. Actually being in Tokyo when it launched was really cool - huge displays were set up in many stores and I heard “Jump Up, Superstar!” playing everywhere for like a solid week.
Aaaand now I wanna go back to Japan.
Um...
Super Mario Odyssey was the first Switch game i have finished the storyline.
But after that, i rarely to replay again just for get the costumes or tons of coins.
I quickly get bored for any 2D / 3D platformer once i finished the game.
Finished the story, but I haven’t played any of the post game content.
I think it’s a great game but it just doesn’t make me want to keep playing it after beating the main story.
I haven't played a game filled with as much pure fun and joy as Mario Odyssey since the original Mario Galaxy. It's a near-perfect game as far as I'm concerned. I wasn't initially sold on the game, but once I got swept up in the luscious orchestral score, majestic scale, and sandbox-platforming bliss of the Cascade Kingdom, Odyssey never let me down.
@rushiosan Yeah i had that problem too. Since i'm a completionist i tried to get all the korok seeds and do as much as possible but after 2 divine beasts and 200 hours of playtime i was just burnt out. So i did the other 2 within 20 hours. I am sure playing it without completion in mind makes it a way better game but i cant turn it off.
That said mario odyssey is completionist heaven. It's just so fun exploring every inch of this compact world.
I no longer regularly play, but the volume of power moons is great. I still put it in every once in a while to collect a few more and am always delighted. Even more than BotW, it's a game that keeps on giving.
The best game on the Switch so far. I'm still playing from time to time.I have already gather more than 500 moons on my own. I'm not sure if I'll be able to get all 900 or so but it will be fun to try.
@NESlover85 : I felt that the ending was enormously disappointing. I was hoping that Mario and Peach would finally marry (and I figured that that was one of the reasons why people were so eager to withhold/avoid spoilers), but nothing happened. It was so anticlimacti and a huge, huge cop-out, especially for a game that is centred around a grand wedding.
Unless there is another major turn in the story after collecting a certain number of moons, my opinion could very well change, but from what I have played, the lead-up to the finale simply hasn't delivered. I intend to collect all of the moons gradually, but I am in no rush to do so.
It's a great game. But it's one great game among many on the Switch. I played it a lot. But I have moved on for now.
Someday I'll definitely revisit it.
This game sure has got panache! Nice to see them all dancing.
I alternate my gaming, some days I play this, others that... So I'm not done with Odyssey yet. Still doing post-story content.
That video is soooo cute. I'm gonna die
@Silly_G
I actually loved the ending to Odyssey, the final sequence was fun and the music was fantastic, and the end where Mario and Bowser are fighting to propose to her was really funny. Especially when Peach was all "I don't need no man", and Mario is comforting Bowser. I really hope future games give us more of that humor, because I was genuinely laughing at loud. Especially when it went all slow-mo and Mario jumps on Bowser's head to get on the ship.
Garbage game. I probably won’t play it until years down the road, if ever.
@Fezzik
Good to know you've played it and were able to judge it based off of experience.
@Frenean I can have my own opinion about it, thanks. I too was on the hype train when they announced it, day one preorder too. Let down of a game after I finished it.
And we still don’t have any DLC kingdoms! Seriously, if a Zelda game could have DLC then surely a Mario game could! I mean, no offense to those who are anti-DLC, I just want more, Odyssey was such a great experience but before I knew it, I 100%ed it. Literally my only complaint was it had less worlds than I hoped for, but I suppose at least it never outstayed its welcome!
And what a game it is. An absolutely stunning overload of inventiveness, creativity and personality with (and this gets take for granted in a Mario game as they almost all have this) utterly perfect controls.
@Fezzik
"I probably won't play it until years down the road, if ever."
You originally said that you haven't ever played it.
The ending is even harder to swallow after a divorce.
I remember the day this game released and the day after I had a massive migraine, haha. The game helped me power through it/distract me from it.
@Silly_G I agree completely. The ending was a huge let down. I feel no need to play any further. I haven't collected all the moons or costumes but feel no need to do either. Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2 were much better games imo.
Edit: Not to say that I got no joy from this game. Far from it. I was having a blast until the anticlimactic ending came way too fast.
@Frenean my apologies. I’m running on fumes. I meant to say I probably won’t* play it again.
i did get 999 moons but cheated... i couldn’t stand jump rope or some of the loops races. i almost wanna delete my file and start again... this game is epic!
This was by far the best Mario game ever. And if you stopped after playing the main story you DID NOT finish the game. You did not reach the true ending.
Still playing from time to time. It truly is a gem. After the story mode, the game just keeps on giving, and giving, and giving...
@NESlover85 same here, The game did have a good story, but after I beat it I didn’t have any desire to go back in, I think the main problem with Mario Odyssey is that the Moon collecting is kind of random and way to easy some times.
I stopped playing almost immediately after I finished the main story. However, this past July I got back into it and collected nearly 400 moons (around 700ish currently) and loved it all. I loved the density of the amount of moons in a single world. After about 600 moons, the difficulty in finding moons dramatically goes up, so I think I’m sticking with around 700 and 45 hrs. Definitely one of the best Switch games
Wow that year went by pretty quickly.
I remember being so hyped for this game that I booked the day off work well in advance (the last game I'd taken a day off specifically for was Mario Kart wii)
Safe to say the game didn't disappoint, for me I still believe it to be one of the best games I've ever had the pleasure to play.
I completed the main story mode and I think I'd collected around 400 power moons so barely scratched the surface in reality.
The trouble is that working full time and having a family with a young daughter my gaming time is fairly limited (can probably squeeze an hour most nights) and I do like to show my other games and consoles plenty of love so never went back to it. I've left it so long now that I can't really remember where I was up to.
I guess now being the anniversary would be a perfect time to delete my file and start all over again....... But then I'd have to stop playing Fifa, crash bandicoot and red dead redemption.... Oh and Spiro the dragon is out soon.... Argh getting stressed just thinking about it all
I intend on on going back to this game soon to collect my last 40 odd more moons. Jump rope is one of them. Such a good game. Makes me feel bad I missed the Mario galaxy 1 and 2.
Haven't played it since I finished the story mode. It was fun, but I couldn't bother to go on. Especially since I'm not really good at the hat hopping tricks you need to do in order to get high up and to the difficult to reach places. I remember having far much fun with Mario64 back in 97. Maybe it was the novelty of that game at the time. Maybe it's because I'm older now so my taste in games has somewhat changed. The fact that there are so many games to choose from right also now makes me not look back at Mario Odyssey. It's a fun game, but no more than that.
One of the best Mario games. I felt like a kid again (with memories of SM64) when playing it for the first time. Had a big grin on my face the whole time. So much creativity on display. Lovely game no doubt!
My problem with the game is that collecting moons doesn’t give you any sense of acheivement, also I hated the New York world.
Don’t get me wrong I like the game, but i wish there were more worlds like the desert which was great.
Maybe I just expected more.
Zelda is by far the better game for me.
Already? Seems just like yesterday. Same with Sonic Mania. Year flew by... just like that.
Nintendo could of made a pretty penny with a season pass. Missed opportunity there
I had good fun with this. But right now, I don't touch my Switch and no game comes out, I really want
I’m definitely still playing Odyssey. I’ve 100%’d it three or four times now (although with the fortnightly picture puzzles and new costumes some of my early completions wouldn’t count as 100% now).
I’m still really annoyed we didn’t get any DLC kingdoms, I’d have paid for them in a heartbeat!
I think Odyssey is another classic for the ages that will age as well as Mario 64 has. I think it’s the level design that makes it so great, there are so many instances where skilled players can take shortcuts and alternate routes that the game has almost infinite replayability.
The game would be absolutely perfect were it not for the skipping and volleyball mini-games... 😤
@OorWullie camera kills sunshine for me!
@Anti-Matter you wouldn't if there would be a reward system like achievements. You know those can motivate you to get that achievement or a trophie. Now when you're finished... why go through all the trouble? You aint getting anything from it except for your own "personal" record. I hope NIntendo will add that awarding system. We don't need to get points or something, but something
Fantastic game and my favorite 3D Mario ever.
such a gem.
i realy had magical and fun moments with my son.
hope to see another on switch
and here i am playing it for the first time ever today
I still play Odyssey on occasion, don't know that I will ever collect all the moons . Odyssey is in my top ten of Mario games not my favorite but it is definitely a spectacular entry in the Mario franchise. I do enjoy taking in game pictures for Odyssey more than any other title I have ever played because of the filters and the graphics in Odyssey are phenomenal it's a beautiful game, that said Galaxy is my alltime favorite Mario game and New Super Mario Bros 2 on the 3DS is my 2nd favorite Mario my 3rd favorite is Super Mario 3D Land . I would love a new Mario 2D platformer I know we are getting Super U Deluxe which I am sure to pick up but I would like a new 2D title.
I keep meaning to go back
@woodlin37, It's a great game and it is really easy to lose track of time when you first start playing., Have fun.
I love this game. Despite some virtually torturous power moons, this game is pure bliss. Play to 500 moons for the best experience.
It’s a good looking game but not my best. Was lucky I got mine signed by Charles.
Way too many moons which didn’t feel special or I got by bumping here and there accidentally. Easiest mario 3d game to 100% in my opinion.
Great game. Pure Nostalgia for me and although it took me til January I got 100%.
It seems a lot of people played each world til they had enough moons to move on to get to the end of the 'story' quickly.
I played each world til I couldn't get anymore Moons then moved on which made the game last much longer and be a more enjoyable experience.
I look forward to the sequel. I just hope the next 3d Mario is on the Switch too.
A other retro game.
This game does not live to SM64 but it is very close there as the two true 3d Mario's. It is still the only game on switch I completed as I could not let go until I did everything (and with a smile on the face the whole time). Everyone that stopped on the credits missed the best part of the game (as I cannot see also people stopping SM64 after beating Bowser). This was my favourite game on Switch until I played the masterpiece XC2.
Now I still don't understand how could we not receive some paid dlc (either new kingdoms or challenge pack) and the free dlc is very boring for me
@AlternateButtons Whatever floats your boat!
Fun game, but didn't stay with me like 64 and Galaxy did.
It was too thematically incoherent.
Great game. It's been a while since I played it, but I finished it three times since launch. Just wish they released some new levels through DLC, but that's quite unlikely at this point. Bring on the sequel, then.
The least memorable of Mario's 3D outings. Absolutely no desire to 100% this one, which is a first for me when it comes to Mario games.
Already at 100% and waiting for good DLC packs (one can hope...).
Been collecting the special costumes, but i want more.
I wonder if some of the people who loved this game can help me out here. Being a huge Mario fan, whenever I read out how much people loved this game it makes me a little sad that I didn't feel the same way and has me legitimately questioning whether my disappointment of the title lies within my approach to the game.
I'm sure I'm not alone in feeling that to truly enjoy a game you need some kind of natural stopping point wherein you've felt like you've at least achieved a certain objective that challenges you in some way.
Nintendo are notorious for not including difficulty settings in their games but this doesn't mean there aren't options; whether the player wants a straightforward relatively easy playthrough or more of a challenge there's generally something for everyone, which is why most Mario games have plenty of extra content once the credits have rolled.
Take Mario Galaxy 2 for example; you can complete the main story which is relatively easy, collect all of the stars in the main game which is more of a challenge and then has a final challenge to collect all of the green stars which is harder still. Effectively serving as a easy, normal & hard settings. Personally I stopped after collecting all of the main stars and was more than happy with that as an ending (it remains one of my favourite games of all time).
This moves me back to Odyssey, I just don't think I understand where these lines lie. The main story was, as expected, really quite easy and while I enjoyed my time with the game up until that point it wasn't enough of a challenge to feel like a natural stopping point.
But no problem, I thought; upon completing the game additional Kingdoms and moons were presented. Now the real game can begin!
But the problem is, I didn't complete either of these tasks. Firstly with the moon's, there's way too many and many are just pure grind - honestly how many of you can say you enjoyed rounding up three sheep for the 12th time? (Or for that matter, how about catching a rabbit? or grabbing the flying bird? or walking along an invisible line?) I was finding it tiresome after collecting the second sheep the first time I came across this challenge, I certainly feel no compulsion to complete the same boring task multiple times over.
After some time (prob too long tbh) I realised that I was never going to obtain all - or 999 moons - in the game due to tedium, but no matter, there was still the additional Kingdoms to complete which could bring me to the natural stopping point I so desired. But therein lies my second problem with the game; after a fun but relatively brief & easy visit to the Mushroom Kingdom two more unlockable kingdoms were made available to complete - the first of which turned out to be a slog if I'm honest, using gravity to handicap Mario's abilities and then having you fight through a load of boss battles that you have already completed earlier on in the game.
The second ramped up the difficulty level so much that it seems hellishly impossible to complete. Where was the difficulty curve? The game went from being pedestrian in difficulty to a dark souls level nightmare without blinking. Suffice to say I gave up after my 20th or so attempt and never went back.
But here's the thing, a similar situation has happened to me before, where I've had to amend my approach to a Mario game to truly appreciate it. That game was New Super Mario Bros. on the NDS - initially the game disappointed me due to a lack of a few 2D Mario staples (no overworld map, lack of flying power up or Yoshi) but the thing that I felt most let down by was the lack of secret (and harder) levels or alternate exits as found in Super Mario World - something that that's almost entirely missing from NSMB. I knew there were the 3 big coins to collect in each levels but these seemed to be extras for completionists so I ignored them and put the game down shortly after beating Bowser.
When I played NSMB Wii a few years later I realised just how much fun it was to collect the 3 coins in every stage which meant applying quite a bit more skill than a standard level walkthrough and ended up loving my time with the game due to this extra challenge. I'm willing to bet if I went back to NSMBDS today I'd enjoy the game far more the second time around with this hindsight.
So I guess my question is, am I doing something similar here with Odyssey? For those of you who loved the game how did you overcome the issues I've listed above? Did you actually enjoy the grind of collecting the moon challenges that repeated themselves endlessly or find the last levels enjoyable or easy to complete? Maybe I'm missing something here but if Nintendo are going to continue with this template going forward I want to make sure I'm making the most of my time with one of my favourite gaming series.
I have very warm memories of playing Super Mario but one of my favorites is definitely Super Mario odyssey
@EdScissorshands
For what is worth, the true final level in 3D World (Champion's Road) and the final challenge in Galaxy 2 (The Perfect Run) were both at least ten times more difficult than Odyssey's Darker Side of the Moon, which was significantly less challenging in comparison.
Got it last spring, stopped playing it in the summer, leaving off right after I arrived at the Metro Kingdom. I got fully sucked in to Kingdom Battle, and I wasn’t sure I was enjoying Odyssey all that much. I picked it back up a few weeks ago and love it.
@GeminiSaint totally agree. Perfect run was hard but champions road is the hardest mario final level in my opinion. 3d land final special was great too
@Vriess
I recently beat Odyssey and was kind of disappointed with it. I had no desire to collect all the moons and felt it was more of a chore than anything.
I decided to go through Mario 64 again and I was having such a blast with it that at some point I decided to collect all the stars. It ended up being more enjoyable than Odyssey and I know it won't be the last time I play Mario's first 3D outing.
@GeminiSaint yeah was going to mention that they had done the same thing in SM3DW also - but had gone on long enough
Do you think The Perfect Run was that much harder (you mean the one where you have to beat 3 bosses in under 5 minutes, right?) - I did find that incredibly difficult too but think the fact that I could move onto other difficult levels whenever that level became too overwhelming meant that I stuck with it until I finally beat it. With Odyssey once you're on the Darker Side of the Moon there's no real reason to go back to the other stages so when it gets frustrating you've got nowhere else to go - so I just gave up in the end.
@GeminiSaint @EdScissorshands - ah okay the perfect run is a totally different thing - clearly never got to that!
I think the issue I have is that most other Mario games give you easy, normal, hard levels - Odyssey is 95% easy and 5% hard. I just wanted some levels with a normal level of difficulty.
@NESlover85 Worse than that, the ending teamed up with the underground power plant scene to splash buckets of "Well, That Was Pointless"-colored paint (or ink, for you squidkids) after completing the game. I know that SMO expanded the Mario series' lore a decent bit, but we sure lost a lot of joy in the process.
@SuperiorTech image hosting websites
I play it at least once a year 100%
I spent about 50 hours with odyssey. I enjoyed my time with it, but really have zero desire to ever play it again. I enjoyed Mario 3d world much more. Hoping that one gets a re release on the switch.
@EdScissorshands New Super Mario Bros. (all of them, including the first one) has an overworld as well as secret exits and hidden stages. And World 9 in New Super Mario Bros. Wii has some rather challenging stages (ie that frozen Muncher level). If you seriously didn’t know that, it’s time to play them again
A week ago, I actually got the feeling to return to Odyssey, I think the first time after the Luigi's Balloon mode was released. I have tried to complete Breath of the Wild (story and DLC) since then, but now I got a break by playing Odyssey and yesterday got the rest of the moons and coins from all of the worlds except Mushroom Kingdom. Since this is the anniversary, maybe I should complete the game once and for all! Well, at least all the collectable moons... Of course there are still extra moons and new costumes to buy
Personally I felt as they were going open worldish with this game, I thought the levels were too small, the city felt tiny to me, I loved running around it but it came to an end too soon, I think I just prefer the more linear type of levels as in Mario Galaxy and 3D World
I would like an Odyssey 2 with larger Worlds and all the stupidly simple moons replaced with something like a special coin in order to make it feel more worthwhile when you actually find a difficult moon so you feel rewarded for your effort - (Imagine if the blue coins in Mario Sunshine were actually shine stars, not that they were easy to collect but there was a differentiation between the two)
It was a good game just not a stellar platforming one. Extremely easy and moons are worthless to collect after 500 where you unlock the last level.
Much prefer Galaxy 2, Sunshine or 64.
Still think Celeste is the best platformer on the Switch.
Best capture was the giant steak. It's all downhill from here for the Mario series, unless they make a whole game with the giant steak capture.
@Ensemen I agree. Like you I'm a huge fan of Zelda games and normally prefer Zelda games over Mario games, but Odyssey I ended up ever so slightly preferring over BotW. Odyssey is just a game custom designed to be fun all the time. BotW has lots of amazing moments but the repetition can be a slog to get through at times.
@EdScissorshands Mario Odyssey is my favorite Mario game, but bear in mind that I'm not like the majority of Mario fans (my 2nd favorite game is 3D World and my 3rd favorite is Sunshine, and I really dislike Galaxy and Galaxy 2). Odyssey has worlds that feel huge but still manageable to explore in, movement is so much fun thanks to the new mechanics and 60 fps, QoL improvements (like no lives, quickly getting back to playing after losing, Hint Toads and Cockatoo telling you where power moons are / giving hints about their locations if you cannot find them. HD Rumble is amazing and really strengthens the experience. Luigi's Balloon World adds so much longevity to the game and makes it more fun to explore the world by seeing where other players hid their balloons. And Koopa Races are so much fun, since speed running in a game focused on smooth movement is a joy. Plus finding shortcuts and executing them while the other Koopas do longer routes is so satisfying. Mechanics wise using Cappy to traverse areas by throwing him and jumping onto him makes traversing the world really fun.
I'd argue that Odyssey did have "normal" levels — the chimney pipe things that appear in the worlds once you beat Bowser that take you to more compact linear levels that contain two moons. Those are not easy but also not overly difficult, and I find that I had a lot of fun with them.
@shadow-wolf yeah I guess that's fair. I didn't find the chimney pipe areas to be particularly difficult but they certainly were the highlight of the game for me. I guess if there had more more bits like those I would have been happier overall.
Thanks for your response in any case!
I still play Odyssey when the new hint art, costumes and special events come out. Hoping that once the 1.2.0 hint art and costumes are finished, actual paid DLC with new kingdoms is announced.
I wasn't really sure about getting a Switch back then, but after watching the first Odissey footage I was sold. Time passes, I get the game. Completed 100% It was..... ok.
I don't know, I just wanted a good sequel to Sunshine (Half fun, half challenge). Most Power Moons were a complete joke.
Hopefully, A Hat in Time will arrive on Switch soon.
@Euler Apologies - clearly I had forgotten about the overworld in NSMBDS - must have been that I was uninspired by the lack of creativity compared to SMW.
I hadn't forgotten that there were overworlds in the other NSMB games however! Would happily play those titles again if they were to come to Switch (don't have my ds, wii or 3ds systems anymore)
I'd love some DLC Kingdoms - all the new outfits they released are nice but I feel no urge to boot it back up just to collect coins to unlock outfits which do nothing in a game I've already explored to the point where I'm done with it. I'm not done with the gameplay, I WANT to play more, but I've seen all to be seen and would happily put down some money for a few DLC Kingdoms, hell I'd be happy with reimaginings of classic levels from 64 or Sunshine! I hope we get an Odyssey 2 within a year or two
@Kalmaro Don't give up!
(Even though there are sooooooooo many.....)
those Drawing Challenges with the Goombas......
@ReaderRagfish Well Luigi was in the game since it came out, he was just unused (seems like so they could redesign him) https://tcrf.net/File:Super-Mario-Odyssey-EarlyLuigi.png oddly the 2D artwork on this has the unused design, rather the one where he has the bow tie and different backpack
@Fezzik says the troll.
@Reigestugatensho Meh, no point. I've already gotten my money's worth from the game.
@Kalmaro I see your point...
(Dark side of the moon tho...)
@Reigestugatensho Did it already. Didn't really excite me though. Probably not going to touch the darker side.
@Romeo-75
I just have to say...
I've never seen ANYONE bold enough to say New Super Mario Bros. 2 is one of their favorites in public. Respect earned.
@EdScissorshands yeah as others have stated, at this point it’s a pattern to have a brutally hard challenge at the end of a Mario game. Though Odyssey’s is comparably tame, I managed to beat the Darker Side in a sitting while I still haven’t completed the final stages in Galaxy 2 or 3D World. As for normal challenge, I agree with other people that there was plenty of challenges in game that were more of a normal difficulty, it’s just the difficulty doesn’t ramp up, the normal challenges are all mixed in with the easy challenges. Some of the minigames were admittedly tedious but overall I think the difficulty was similar to other 3D Mario games (barring the final levels being slightly harder in the other ones than the Darker Side, which I fully believe anyone can clear with enough patience, the challenge with it is simply length, its individual sections aren’t too bad and it does offer health recovery every so often).
It was an incredible game. Probably my second favorite 3D Mario game. I prefer Super Mario 64 a bit more than Odyssey but that's probably based off nostalgia. Galaxy 2 comes close but is probably my third favorite.
Anyways, I'm happy to see Nintendo celebrating the anniversary for the game. Love the new artwork, Peach looks adorable and Mario looks so happy!
@Kalmaro I pretty much unlocked all phases of the moon with the amount of moons I had when I finished the game...just give me something to compel me to collect em all. Nintendo is weird...soooo much love in that game, so full of stuff, but then they're like...nah no reward for all the moons! wtf
@Dang69 I was tempted to get more coins so I could unlock all the suits but meh, the core game really was enough for me. I enjoyed it a lot. Wedding suit Bowser was so much fun to see in motion.
My favourite game of all time. I know its not perfect and not everyone will enjoy it but I can just remember smiling the whole time I played. I just played through the New Donk City Festival as a celebration of the anniversary and I still got a little choked up. This game brought me so much joy in a way no other game has and it will take some work to be beaten.
@NESlover85 Same. I loved the main game and was really hoping for more kingdoms to come out as DLC because I just didn’t feel like grinding for hundreds more coins. When a game starts to feel like a chore, it goes back into the case and onto the shelf, otherwise I’ll start to hate it and I really don’t want to hate Mario.
It’s a shame there’s not much to do after completing. I finished the game within a week. Got most of the power moons and most of the purple coins and outfits. Now what? I haven’t touched the game in ages as there’s nothing left (main game wise)
And still no sign of dlc. I would love some sunshine style bits.
It’s difficult to compare with the older games, especially Mario 64. It’s obviously superior to Sunshine and the pseudo-3D Land and World games. Personally I’d put the Galaxy games ahead of Odyssey and would rather play Odyssey than Mario 64 now. But Mario 64 made a technical, generational leap that isn’t possible now. How much that feeds into nostalgia for that game is difficult to quantify.
@1UP_MARIO Charles visited our town's comic convention this year.
@NTELLIGENTMAN great man. So much positivity. Makes you wahuuu
it took me a bit to get into it, but i shelled out $66 (after tax), I was going to play through, but as i got into it, I liked it more and more, I (personal opinion) think it's a great game and would like to see another after New Super Mario U, for Switch in 2019
Similar story to a lot of others, really enjoyed making my way through the game, picked up most if not all of the available moons in each world before moving on to the next. Finished the game, but haven't felt the need to go back and get more moons (after more become available in each world).
For me, the biggest missing element from this game versus other Mario games is the lack of a big final unlock. They had a few nice secrets, which I enjoyed, but as soon as I realised I'd seen everything but the game still had about 30% to 40% of the moons still to collect, I just didn't have any desire to do it...
Maybe I'll revisit it now... I'm not sure. I strongly believe there will be a sequel, and that it will be a much greater experience. Hoping it will be out Christmas 2019, but we will see...
Considering slowed sales of Switch Nintendo's time would better spent getting more top tier games out than "dance and artwork".
I'm gonna be honest, I love this game. Many of the game's worlds are great, Mario controls like a dream, there's a plethora of moons to get if you're like me - the kind of player who loves exploring, and the soundtrack is FANTASTIC! Admittedly, it ain't perfect (the main story is too short for my tastes and there are some moons that you just can't get if you're not wearing the correct costume), but it's still an awesome Mario adventure IMO. I would say it's the best Mario game since the first Super Mario Galaxy.
Happy 1st birthday, Super Mario Odyssey!
@PrincessBowsette No trolling here. I am genuinely not impressed.
