Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is shaping up to be just that; the ultimate Super Smash Bros. game. But no matter how many characters are included as playable fighters, a colossal majority of those people beg for Sakurai to include on social media just won't make it in.
So to take a slightly different stance, rather than talk about who will, could, or might be a fighter, we decided to take a look at who flat-out just won't. You know, for fun. Watch the video if you want to share in the previously mentioned fun.

Rest in peace comments section, we knew ye well.
I still believe in a Ubisoft character. At least one. Maybe Rayman? Rabbids (with the power to copy powers... Kirby anyone??) Sam Fisher (maybe a Snake's Echo)? Or Altair and Ezio (as normal and Echo)?
That face Alex lol.
I'm content on whoever makes it at the end of the day. I'm sure there will be some DLC at some point, but still.
I do hope you don't actually believe most of these people were actually being serious about their suggestions. xD
I am happy with the roster so far, and any other characters added is extra icing on the smash cake!🍰😀
WALUIGIBHDHJSBSJSXVSJXBSK
@gloom 🤣
that pikachu picture is sick
Merrick Garland.
So glad Tony Hawk isn’t on this list. There’s still hope.
But I want Doom Marine D: D: D:
Isnt that character such a great fit for Smash??
/s
Yeah, like Waluigi.
I want the Nintendo Switch to be a playable fighter. It could throw the joycons at people. It’s just too perfect, so they have to do it.
I really wanted Ken, Chun-Li, Ehonda...especially since we wont be getting SFV
>Implying hashtags ever made a difference
I don’t expect any more than one or two additional third-party characters. People are forgetting that Smash is primarily focused on first party material. The third-party characters are and have always been guests. Their inclusion and representation will be minimal by comparison.
But Sakurai said that everyone is here... Are you telling me that he didn't mean absolutely EVERYONE?
@RCGamer making Rabbids as an echo of Kirby seems unlikely. They’d have to make costumes of every character for the Rabbid and animate/program the moves. Kirby probably takes more work than any other character, I doubt they want to double that.
Though I do see you reasoning there, it would make sense as an echo. Rayman is probably more plausible though.
@Euler OUCH...It's been a couple of years now, but that HURTS! I'd like to make that joke with Kavanaugh soon.
I have so many NES-era wants that I know won't get in. Some would have great echoes too. Bill & Lance, Billy (Bimmy) & Jimmy Lee, Bionic Commando (Rad would be interesting with the whole no-jumping thing), Wart, Birdo, Mr. Sandman/King Hippo/Bald Bull, Starman (Pro Wrestling).... I could go on and on, being an NES guy who loves his nostalgia glasses!
I even got to wondering about Rygar, with the arcade version coming tomorrow. #Rygar
If pickle rick isn't in smash ultimate I'm burning my nintendo switch system. Rik and mordo is teh best sho on erth and only big brains will understand, so nintendoh better add pickLriCk
I understand people want for more characters, if they already added so much why not more? But really what we have is already a lot, the most iconic faces off gaming that started on Nintendo and made Nintendo what it is are already there (of course with some considerations, like Cloud being a standalone for the FF franchise which should have been Warrior of Light but whatever, Snake being a favor to a friend and Sonic representing a long time rivalry).
I'm more than ok with the rooster as it is.
I'd like to make one more addition to your list: Shantae.
You guys should just be thankful that Pichu is back!
Yay Pichu!
Phoenix Wright was already in Marvel vs. Capcom. It's not too much of a stretch to imagine him in Smash.
Doom Guy would be overpowered!
@ShadJV I agree, but Ubisoft is so close to Nintendo these days and I can't imagine this Smash without anyone from it. If you analyse the guesses some of them have historical links with Nintendo, like Ryu, Belmonts, Pac-Man. But Cloud? He represents the break between Nintendo and Square. I don't know, but I'm really sure someone is coming from Ubi, I was trying to figured out who.
Just no non Nintendo characters!!! (Cloud) 😠😡
My ridiculous, never happening wishlist:
1.) Lola Pop
2.) Sans
3.) Nate or Jibanyan from Yo-Kai Watch
4.) Chibi-Robo
5.) Tabuu
6.) Master Hand
7.) Waluigi (not as a meme)
8.) Dr Crygor (as an Echo fighter of Wario)
9.) The Nintendo Labo cardboard man
10.) Dr. Luigi (as an Echo of Dr. Mario)
Count Cannoli?
Smash ultimate is a great idea. I would like a Mario Kart ultimate with all the tracks ever made. That would be epic.
I’m surprised nobody from Arms is in Smash yet.
I’d like to see Dixie Kong playable still. Maybe Paper Mario too. After that I’m content with the roster.
I want in Smash:
1. the Japanese キャンディ・キャンディ (Candy Candy)
2. the Swedish Pippi Långstrump (Pippi Longstocking)
3, 4, 5, 6, 7 . the French - Belgian Tin Tin & Milou, Alix, Asterix, Iznogood, Lucky Luke
8. the Greek Καραγκιόζης (Karagiozis) and
9. the German Die Biene Maja (Maya the Bee)
N00b doesnt know KOS-MOS? RIP.
I'd honestly agree with all of these. I think Crash only has a shot if Activision wants in on Smash Bros, but judging their rocky relationship, I'd doubt it. Sora only if Sakurai wants another out of left field appearance, but I think if there is a 2nd Square rep, Geno has way more of a chance and honestly, I know hed never get in, but I'd only want Raichu for nostalgia purposes. When I was a kid, my cousin would tell me there was a Gameshark code to unlock Raichu and Charizard in Smash 64. Of course fake, but with Charizard making the roster, itd make that childhood myth a reality. Still, solid list and...I'm in the camp that Waluigi is not in. If theres another Smash Bros, yes, without a doubt, hes managed to become the new Ridley, but the game is just about done, the roster is probably fully decided with DLC uncertain and still show him prominently as an Assist Trophy. Waluigi will not be in Smash Ultimate
LABO Robot as a R.O.B. echo. It could also use the other ToyCons. Fishing rod as a ranged grapple, final smash makes a Labo house quickly and implodes with enemies inside.
I want Ashley Mizuki Robbins (Another Code / Another Code: R) to be a character. Not that WarioWare Ashley
@Euler His final smash would include a giant Donkey Kong gavel
I wanted Alexandra Rovias from Eternal Darkness. She perfect for it. Just use some of the spells for the special attacks.
Also, the stage would use "sanity effects" to screw with the player, like mess with the health bar or have characters pretend to be smashed off screen but don't really.
That's too awesome though to be in.
I second Dr. Luigi. I'm glad that made luigi his own character with his own moveset, but I miss the days of smash 64 when his moveset was identical to mario with the exception of an up smash attack that set foes on fire.
If Dr. luigi makes it in I want it to truly be a echo fighter of mario and mirror his speed and moveset.
Big Boss (MGS3) as Snake Echo Fighter.
I originally thought about Liquid, given that we're getting a lot of villain representation lately, but he's more the kind of guy who is into guns rather than explosives. And Big Boss could use a knife in some of its moves to make a difference.
Sans
I don't think any Undertale character will enter the Smash roster, but if by some chance it happens, Sans it's the most logical choice. Small bones, sausages, and comedy trinkets can be used as light attacks, telekinesis as grabs, and for the stronger attacks, big bones and Gaster blasters.
Rayman
It just weird that he's not in the game. He has a trophy in the WiiU Smash. Why not just add him right away? He seems like a good fit. A somewhat long range fighter, he can hover, and is really good at punching and kicking.
2:47
Oh, cause Shovel Knight looks atrocious in 3D.
10:09
Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 would like a word with you.
I also don't understand when you talk about "history" with games like Undertale and Hollow Knight, like what history did Shovel Knight have?
@Sebas
Undyne would be the best choice as an Undertale rep for a playable character (IMO) as she is an actual fighter who is very passionate about it. Sans is lazy and I cannot see him wanting to partake in Smash because of it. He also doesn't fight throughout the whole game (except for that one and only time, because his hand was forced).
@SimplyCinnamon53 seriously doubt that but I could see the Labo robot kit as an echo for R.O.B.
You say this but Negan is in Tekken 7.
Also, you said you don't know what modern Adventure Time is like, it actually just ended. The series finale was a few weeks ago.
@Kinoen
I get what you're saying, but I think Sans is more recognizable.
And you can do a lot more with him than with Undyne.
For example: Sans only has 1HP in Undertale.
How does that translate in Smash? Simple: Sans becomes the most lightweight character of the entire roster. With his strong attacks having a big range, he could be a glass cannon type.
Also, as you mentioned, Sans is very lazy and has a very low stamina. So, why not apply the same new mechanic of dodging to his attacks? Like, the more he uses smash+a and some b attacks, they not only deal less damage, they get a shorter reach and take much longer to charge too...
I just get more ideas when trying to make him a fighter than Undyne. She might have the right mentality, but she's all spears. And if a spear wielder gets into Smash, is gonna be my boi, Bandanna Dee!
@DarkKirby
Wow, I knew that Tekken was kinda crazy, but that really is super random.
If they can come up with a moveset for Phoenix Wright to use in both Marvel vs. Capcom and Project X Zone 2, why not Smash?
Still, there's several more prominant third party characters that would get an invite before Phoenix would.
@ReaderRagfish Sure, right alongside the New York Yankees, Dallas Cowboys, and Detroit Red Wings.
Meanwhile, back in the real world, Alex needs to learn the difference between brackets and parenthesis.
@RCGamer I’d be 100% for Rayman. He has probably the most history with Nintendo out of any Ubisoft character. Rabbids have a shot due to their recent game but... I’m sure it wouldn’t be a Kirby echo and honestly, I wouldn’t enjoy them as much. Rayman is such a good fit though, he’d be right at home in the roster!
I think Sora has a shot - sure, he belongs to Disney, but Disney isn’t especially protective of the KH franchise and they love publicity (and money) that they don’t have to work for. Sora has had 4 titles on Nintendo systems now, and not including remakes he’s had 2 on Sony systems (as he wasn’t playable in BBS or 2.8) - obviously the two that haven’t been on Nintendo systems are literally 1 & 2 but hey, Cloud had NONE on Nintendo systems (okay maybe theatrhythm), I would’ve thought Sora would’ve had a higher shot than Cloud... do I think he’s coming? No, I think we only have a couple unannounced characters at most. I’m just saying it wouldn’t be implausible.
Wait he doesn’t know who KOS-MOS is??? SHE CAMEOS IN A FIRST PARTY SWITCH GAME FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!
Really Alex? Phoenix Wright wouldn’t work? Worked fine in Marvel vs Capcom. He was a joke character, sure, but it’s not like Smash doesn’t have those, heck I could see him working better in Smash than MvC which they already did.
Thanos obviously wouldn’t happen but I seriously laughed at that one. Just the Snap... in 1 vs 1 that would just end the match there, great gamble if you’re about to lose though!

To remember this great fighter.
@ShadJV Agree with you on Phoenix Wright can't see any reason why he couldn't work considering some of the other characters that have been adapted for the series. I can see him having quite a reasonable move set and plenty of chances for some fun nods.
One I wish for but I really can't see working is Prof. Layton. His move set would be severely limited to 'out thinking' the opponent. His final smash however could be a puzzle that if you fail Layton takes the beating instead of the opponent, which would be a interesting way to mix things up.
Otherwise with Nintendo's working relationship with Ubisoft a rabbid would work pretty well as a fighter. They could be in their Mario guises for different players. Maybe make their attacks a bit unpredictable in execution like they are to add something different.
Bring back Hornet from Fighters Megamix (Saturn)
I feel the need to elaborate a bit on the two characters I actually want, as some of these requests aren't that much out there and, I have to be 100% frank about this, my lovely homonym from the staff kind of oversimplified his dream-crushing.
Sora is an interesting situation. Aside from what most people tend to take as evidence, his inclusion is actually far from impossible. One point in his favor is that it's not like he's exactly out of alternate costume options or, even better, how he can even easily be in a male Wii Fit Trainer/Alph/female Robin/female Corrin situation. He also has, as pictured above (obviously, credit to dfreak22 for the pic) many, many, many options for his moveset already, even without counting the unlikely option to have Goofy or Donald appear for his moves. And this, sadly, is exactly where the pros end and the cons start.
For one, aside from the obviousness of any Disney character related to Sora not having originated in the gaming medium, there's the fact that - as mentioned - Disney owns the character, although not completely as any non-KH usage needs permission from Square and Tetsuya Nomura himself (!!!) first. This wouldn't be much of a problem per se - Mortal Kombat characters are now a Warner Bros. property, but have originated as video game fighters - but Disney kind of has a problem when it comes to Disney characters fighting: Dissidia Final Fantasy (PSP) and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days (NDS) were originally supposed to be one single KH fighting game, but when Disney was against it (if not outright vetoed the idea) the fighting part became Dissidia, whereas the playability of many KH characters ended up being one of Days' selling points.
Legal matters aside, though, there's no denying Sora would have an enormous potential in Smash. (And besides that, the Mickey Mouse Game & Watch games were listed in the Chronicle mode of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, in broad daylight, not in some "dummied out" datamined list. Just wanted to say this out loud.)
Hands off my little hairy baby, NL, you know you wanted this too! The furball that got me started on home console gaming - Crash deserves some love, but for the sake of clarity I'll keep this brief by bouncing back and forth between pros and cons.
Gameplay-wise, the Mega Man/Mario/K. Rool approach - referencing the whole series in a single moveset - would be the best thing to do as Crash's moveset would be otherwise kind of bland; the problem would lie in his standard attacks. Crash's main weapon could either be the spin (which in his home series is a nice weapon, but what with it spinning enemies away would be a bit OP in the Smash context - it worked with Mega Man's unique projectile A-button moves, not so much for Crash) or by punching and kicking (which would then represent the universally-reviled Titans/Mutant duology, and as Pac-Man attests, Sakurai only wants characters' golden era to be represented in Smash). Special moves are easy to do (Tornado Spin for up special, Belly Flop for down special, Slide for side special and for neutral B... um...), as is the final smash.
The main problem with Crash would be the lack of his adoptive (creative level-wise) sibling, Spyro. The two IPs were developed by different companies from the get-go, but owned by the same copyright holder (Universal Interactive => Sierra => Activision) and worked on not only in the same building, but also in the same office. Therefore, as predictably amazing as it is to have Crash's best platforming outings on Switch, it also feels weird to not have the other.
One could posit that sure, Nintendo might have planned to have delayed the Reignited Trilogy official Nintendo announcement (which is long overdue after not one, but two leaks add up to this game's history of succeeding Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle in terms of being the next world's worst-kept secret) for it to coincide to both characters being revealed in the same Direct (and hey, it could be tonight's own!), but even as a hardcore fan I admit the chances of this happening are rather slim (either today, in the next Directs, as post-release DLC or otherwise).
As for other characters I don't actively want who have been in the list... well, good luck for everyone who wants them in. Except the joke requests such as Shrek, Goku and - admit it - Sans. Those requests can go all the way down to hell for me.
@Bunkerneath
I love it when the "how can [character] be playable outside [his/her/its] own genre?" question gets such a straightforward answer. The GLA costume in Mario Maker still cracks me up to this day.
@SEGATA_DREAMCAST
True dat 😍
@Sebas
I feel the opposite, in terms of one being able to do more. Undyne has a weapon (one we have never seen in Smash before) while Sans would be like Ness or Mewtwo, being psychic.
They could do that (talking about his HP), but I feel since Undertale was to specific with his health, he would be walking wound with %999, since it would be true to his game, which Sakurai and team have done oh so well with everything they put into Smash.
Its because he's lazy, that I feel he wouldn't want to even partake in Smash, I mean, he only fights you once because his hand was forced. What would be his reasoning for fighting in Smash, for fun? Undyne would LOVE to fight for fun, Sans would not (IMO).
Smash also has that mechanic you mentioned, where moves get weaker the more you use them.
She maybe all spears, but I can most definitely see her throwing kicks, punches and have a good grab game. Sans would be stuck as a ranged fighter with Gaster Blasters and psychic stuff. I'd also much rather have Undyne than Bandana Dee o3o
But hey we ain't going to convince the other that X is better for Smash Especially since it's very unlikely either will get in, even as assist trophies, though it is fun to discuss~
