Nintendo's reign over the Japanese charts has been receiving the odd dent or two over the last couple of weeks, with a healthy number of top-tier PlayStation titles wreaking havoc at the top. This week's no different, with a couple of new releases spoiling Nintendo's fun once again.
Marvel’s Spider-Man unsurprisingly takes the top spot this week after taking the world by storm, selling a whopping 125,154 copies at retail (that's physical only) to get there. Last week's number one, Pro Evolution Soccer 2019, has remained near the top with a number two finish, and yet another new PS4 release has rounded off the top three.
SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy was a new entry for both systems this week, although the PS4 managed to shift 10,018 retail copies, while the Switch version sold 5,493.
Here's a look at the top 20 (first numbers are this week's sales, followed by total sales in brackets):

I’m surprised Nintendo still stands so firmly behind the 3DS at this point, seeing the ever-decreasing sales numbers for the handheld. This is especially troubling, seeing as Japan is where the 3DS has performed disproportionately well in the past.
@thesilverbrick I'll be more surprised if we hear of it past next year's Q1 Direct.
Man, Minecraft’s doing better than splatoon.
Come through, Persona 5! SMTV won't fund itself.
Wow! The Xbox is doing really poorly.
@steve_1978 on that regard Japan is Japan, they prefer japanese consoles and not american one.
Spiderman is one of the absolutely most well known western superheros in Japan. In my experience if I ask a Japanese person what western comic book characters they know, Spiderman will be at the top of the list. No matter if it is a kid, or an adult.
Back home in the states, people answer "Naruto" "Goku" or "Pikachu" about Japanese anime in the same way.
@SlyPlayr09 it's because in Japan, they were later to the Minecraft bandwagon. PC gaming isn't as popular here as it is pretty much anywhere else, and for years Minecraft was a PC exclusive or at least the PC version was much much better. Once the console versions got updated and almost caught up to the PC, it took off here.
The SNK Heroines data is interesting: PS4 sales are twice those on Switch, for a simultaneous release. I can think of any number of reasons why - the Switch has been absolutely inundated with versus fighters, and DB FighterZ and Smash are just around the corner - but it's still interesting.
But Persona 5 (new)? What? The 2016 game? That puzzles me. Is it just a wrongly calculated re-entry, or is this another spin-off, like the dancing games?

This is what i imagine Nintendo right now
I own the Switch and PS4 version of SNK Heroines. I can't recommend the Switch version. It is another poor port with pixelated characters and constant frame drops. The PS4 game runs smoothly and looks sharp. Perhaps Japanese reviews pointed out the flaws of Nintendo's version. That may be the reason why it's selling twice as much on PS4.
@Krull The game sold more or less the same when you look at the percentage instead of absolute numbers, but anyway the game doesn’t seem to be very good and the Switch version is not very optimized so that had some impact.
Other games like My Hero One’s Justice sold better on Switch even with a smaller install base than the PS4. It depends on the game and the care the developers put into making a good Switch port.
Ugh...... 🙄
Spiderman & Soccer = Worst things in my opinion.
Two lamest games....
And about Minecraft.
I think Portal Knights should deserved for more Love due to Much Better graphics & gameplay than Minecraft.
@thesilverbrick,
Nintendo are putting pretty much all of their resources into the Switch,but the 3DS will still continue to do pretty well especially during the Christmas holidays,and you have to consider the console is 7 years old.
I guess SONY has another global hit on their hands. It did great on the UK chart also. (Where rehashed Monster Hunter fell 30 spots in a week and vanished off the charts) .. and a Guarantee hit in the US.
Buying it, but I'll wait for it to go on sale. No rush.
SNK:H Failure all around. Just not as bad on PS4. Why when you read "sold 2X more at launch than"... always ask for the base number they comparing against.
@Lando Still 10k for ps4 is poor .
Always baffling every time these come out that it upsets people when a game the don't particularly care for is selling well. Why is that such a problem, Such immaturity imo.
Spiderman rocks btw, really spectacular game!
@Equinox Compared to other western releases on PS4 in Japan, I'd say 125k is pretty impressive.
@Krull I don't know why people are surprised that fighting games sell better on the PS4 over the Switch. It's simple, the FGC is all over the PS4 with the exception of exclusives, Smash and KI, for example. Everyone else already knew the PS4 version was going to come out on top in sales.
Ugh I feel bad. I’ve been sick so I haven’t been able to dig out my ps4 to play this. At this point I ‘ll let it keep until I get a pro.
I hope nobody at snk was actually expecting heroines to light the world on fire. Even without the ridiculous premise (my opinion, fight me) it is a casual fighter. It is a time waster that in some ways limits its access to the mainstream casual market with its premise. This is just a bandaid till samsho comes out.
Minecraft: Nintendo switch Edition is a completely separate game from the one in the top. Just saying. The one listed, which launched in June, is the Bedrock Edition, the "Nintendo Switch Edition" was the previous version that didn't get a physical release anywhere.
@MonkeyKing Thanks for explaining that. I'm barely aware of the FGC, so that explains my ignorance! I still thought the sales figures were interesting. I guess it shows that the FGC isn't going to transfer to Switch in huge numbers, which will ultimately hurt the chances of some of the very latest top-tier titles making their way over, like DOA and Soulcalibur.
As SNK Heroines is set up as a more casual fighter, and is less likely to be adopted by hardcore players, one might have thought its sales would compare more favourably with those on PS4, though, especially given how much more popular Switch titles generally are in Japan at the moment, regardless of existing user bases.
I am curious to know how many additional Spider-Man sales were digital. I pre-ordered the digital deluxe several months ago.
@Krull No problem for the info. The Switch does Miss lot of fighting game releases compared to the other systems, and on top of that the PS4 version sells better than XBone and PC versions as well.
I can totally see where you're coming from with it being a more casual fighter giving it more of an edge. Apparently the Switch Port itself is also not up to snuff compared to the PS4 one, so that is probably another reason why it sold less.
Wow, I really didn't think Spider-Man would be terribly popular at all in Japan. I would have thought it was, by far, too Western for chart dominating sales there. It's getting hard to predict what will and won't sell well there.
Once again, 49 Japanese people (who am I kidding, 49 gaijin) who bought an XBox One, I salute you!
@Ryu_Niiyama I thought you were geting the Spidey LE Pro bundle?
@NEStalgia haven’t found one yet and I’m trying not to spend till the hurricane is done in case my folks need me. I’m going to hope sony will still sell them into the holidays.
Why do they even bother continue selling the Xbox consoles in Japan. It’s pretty obvious by now it will never be popular there.
Minecraft is an evergreen title. Remember Minecraft in Vita being on the charts for ages and ages...
@Don Microsoft gave it a try with 360..
with Jap games like Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Students of Round.... still it never took of.
Anything with the MARVEL label sells itself.
Not a surprise to see Spiderman dominate sales despite the fact that it is by all accounts a derivative open-world game, essentially Batman: Arkham City with a Spiderman skin. That's what a multi-million dollar marketing campaign will get you.
@redd214 "Always baffling every time these come out that it upsets people when a game the don't particularly care for is selling well. Why is that such a problem..."
Probably because rewarding mediocrity is an inherently bad thing, and by all accounts, Spiderman is an average game at best and is only a runaway success because of the huge marketing budget behind it.
@Mountain_Man well I really am enjoying it as are many others, thanks for sharing your opinion though
@redd214
I'm sure it's an enjoyable game. Most derivative games are, unless they manage to screw up the underlying formula. But if anyone has played the Arkham games, Shadow of Mordor, or Mad Max then Spiderman really won't offer anything they haven't seen before.
@Mountain_Man you're so spot on, thanks for pointing that out
@YoshiPilot,
It isn't to be fair, Minecraft is a newer release and has sold 246,000 when Splatoon 2 has sold 2.6 million.
@redd214 You were really nice dealing with that salty fanboy my respects to you dude and I agree with you Spider-Man it's an amazing game and definitely one of the best games of this year
@Mountain_Man
“and by all accounts, Spiderman is an average game at best and is only a runaway success because of the huge marketing budget behind it.”
‘By all accounts?’ Don’t think so. Your Account maybe.
Dang it, now I've gotta be that guy:
Sony may have taken the top 3, but the top 10 is split 50/50 and Nintendo's still got 13 of the top 20. Keep those console wars alive, guys!! 😁😉
@Steel76 Not everything has to be motivated by envy (especially something as easily correctable as video game envy...after all its not like one is barred from buying one system if they already own another) its no different than the complaints about smash really. For many it is a big draw/system seller whatever, but for every 5 people that are frothing at the mouth for smash there are 1 or 2 that wish everyone would move on. Sometimes people honestly have different tastes than the "mainstream" and unfortunately for them when the public gets a new darling it is usually something they have no interest in.
I would even go so far as to wager that you have more multiplat system owners that are more annoyed by games skipping their system of choice as its more clutter over all to keep up with. (I would be one of those people. If this were happy rainbow wish land everything would come out on switch for me, not because of some fangirl issues but because I really enjoy using the switch hardware and it does get cumbersome managing 19+ systems and a gaming pc, but at the same time I have the most options.)
I'm sure younger gamers or those obsessed with an "image" may fall into the envy spectrum but again...that is an issue easily addressed (before you try to quote financial limitations, this is a luxury hobby so I have literally no sympathy for someone that gets angry that the consumer market doesn't cater to them only. want to play a game? Buy what it comes out on. On the same token I do respect people exercising their rights as consumers to choose a product...but whining about it isn't included.) So it becomes less of an envy issue (as you can only be envious of something you can't have by definition...everybody short of living in a very restrictive locale can buy a game system and games) and more of an artificial restriction. Buy what you want, play what you want, vote with your wallet and let devs know what you want (when realistic of course) but being "envious" when the solution is a paycheck and a car ride or a click away is silly.
@electrolite77 "‘By all accounts?’ Don’t think so. Your Account maybe."
Well, OK, the Sony fan sites seem to love it, but I'm seeing comments from gamers in various forums saying that after the initial excitement wears off, you quickly realize that it's a fairly standard open world game with a Spiderman skin. That doesn't make it a bad game, just a game that is over-hyped and overrated.
@Steel76 "I bet all the people complaining about Spider-Man, or any other big AAA title NOT coming to the Switch, would throw them selves over the game, if it WAS released on the Switch"
I'd much rather have an Arkham City port.
