New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe Coming to Nintendo Switch in January

Glad I sold my Wii U version.

Least surprising news of the direct. This was all but confirmed like a month ago. Still cool though. I skipped the Wii U so I am looking forward to playing it. Also cool that they kept the 'U' in the title.

It's a shame a Switch port is one of my highlights for a disappointing direct of mostly ports. Besides Luigi's Mansion 3.

@JoeDiddley I think for Nintendo it means having at least two "Mario" titles out every year ... getting it out before Chrimbo would possibly stunt Mario Party a little...

So wait, what happens if one of the other characters gets the Super Crown? King Mario, King Luigi, and King Toad power up? Hopefully something.

The tedious philosophies that this series is based on cause a title such as this to wander into territory that is a dimension less than what the actual gameplay is... Ok, that's an exaggeration (Don't judge the spelling, I have a man-cold), I'm excited for this. The Toadette Peach thing is a little freakish though...

I was hoping if they did this all the Mario Run characters would be playable since they have the models and special moves for them.

Or at they very least they should've had a Sprixie kidnapped so the playable cast could be Mario, Luigi, Toad, Toadette, Peach, and Daisy. Again, they have the animations from Mario Run for all these characters . . .

Not at all pleased with this getting ported over Super Mario Maker, but I guess that's how life goes.
Still, my linear-platforming needs are more than covered with Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy. I can't find my original comment, but this makes me very reluctant to eventually give in and buy this port. In a post-Odyssey era, despite this being easily the cream of the NSMB crop, for the first time I have zero interest over this one. Crash has its fair reason to be [almost] a full-priced point A-to-point B platformer; unless Mario U Deluxe is revealed to have an unlockable post-game level editor, none of what's been shown is nearly enough to warrant a purchase outside of a sale.

@zool I’d bet the only reason we got no Xenoblade X this time was to not overshadow Torna. I’ll be SHOCKED if it’s absent in the next Direct.

Seriously why couldn't they port Xenoblade Chronicles X or Tokyo Mirage Sessions?

Easily one of the two best games in the New series, alongside the original NSMB. But now it's a port. Oh well.

Honestly, though. If you haven't played it, I highly encourage you to do so . Sure, it looks like the same since the 2006 game, but the level design and tight controls are on point in NSMBU, more so than the other games.

I was hoping it was Super Mario 3D World that was being ported. Ah well, fun game regardless.

If they get rid of the freeze every time someone dies I'd buy it again...

...3D World is SOO much better than this though. Or even a Mario Maker Player that would let you just play the existing fan-made levels on Switch. I feel like the only reason they did this one is they didn't want a 3D mario game competing with SM Odyssey.

Would have rebought this if it had been a part of NSMB All Stars. I've been wanting to replay the first 3 in HD.

This is one of the best 2D platformers of all time, right behind DKC Tropical Freeze and Returns.

I don't care what other people say, because I have never formed my opinions based on what others say or think. This game was downright immaculate. Yes it was very similar to the previous entries, but unless you were playing all 4 of them back to back to back to back in a weekend marathon, I don't think that's going to matter.

And it was definitely the best one of the series. The New Super Luigi U expansion rounds out this release nicely. Those were some really fun stages, and got really hard, too. I never did finish NSLU though. That will change once this drops on Switch.

I didn't play this when it was out because I was over the New games by this point, especially since this came like three months after the third one, but I'll probably get it now, it's definitely the best looking one.

I also think this is going to be a huge seller. There are so many other games I'd rather they port, but this will do well commercially with the Switch's install base.

I was really hoping for a "New Super Mario Brothers: All stars" compilation of the best levels from that sub-series.

But I will still buy this again.

I don't think competition has anything to do with anything. I think it's as simple as, there's already a 3D Mario on Switch that released less than a year ago. There is not, however, a 2D Mario game on Switch. So this game will fill a void 3D World could never fill.

If someone loves the game so much they played it 5 times, then they clearly love the game enough to be excited for another go on Switch.

Btw, I don't think they said they're not porting Xenoblade X. Just because it wasn't announced on this specific day in the year doesn't mean they're not bringing the game. And they are almost certainly bringing the game. Even the producer said he wants the bring the game to Switch. So the producer wants to port the game to Switch. Nintendo wants to port Wii U games to Switch. Gamers want them to port the game to Switch... literally everyone wants this game ported to Switch. It's coming, you can take that to the bank. Right now though, they are about to launch their new Torna expansion for Xenoblade 2. So now is obviously not a good time to announce another game in the series. Give it until the February direct. That's when we'll hear about Xenoblade X, I think.

Ugh..... this rehash better not be their 2d Mario game for Switch. I expect a new 2d Mario before the end of the Switch life cycle. I'm disappointed in Nintendo's laziness. This game is 6 years old and it was only OK to begin with.

Man,it's a shame that this was my highlight of the direct. Luigi mansion 3 looked good too but aside from that, there wasn't much to leave me feeling excited. I actually believed that the last 10 games unannounced were going to be suprising with snes games or even n64. I truly have no idea why they waited to reveal the remaining nes games until today. It's not like it was worth the wait. Either way enough of my moaning. I'm pretty pumped for nsmb u

I would have liked to see the Mario 3D World, especially to add more characters like Daisy, Wario and even Toadette for example and more challenge, but, well, I think it will be for the next one.

Of course, I'm not disappointed, I have this game originally for the Wii U and I liked that curiosity of Toadette> Peachette, I wonder what it means, but, ok, we'll have to wait.

Bring on Super Mario 3D World. That's what I'm waiting for.

When The Minish Cap came out, Nintendo made the US wait until after Christmas to play the game.
Although the after Christmas date suggests Nintendo believes this will be a seller in what is probably a slow sales period.

As far as 3D world goes I think they’re saving that one. They’ll probably keep working on Odyssey 2 and push it back for a while and use 3D world to fill in the gaps. They’be already ported the engine given that Captain Toad is working so I’m sure it’s coming!

The name is not dumb, it's a classic long weird name for Japanese title and plays homage for the Wii U. It would have been disrespectful to drop the U.

This game is SO so so good. Easily the best New Super Mario Bros title. Glad to see it come back.

I didn't give this game a serious go on Wii U, and I guess unless Nintendo gets their collective heads out of their backsides and makes a real 'new' 2D Mario, this will have to do. Every Nintendo console is supposed to have a 2D Mario.

Beats that tediously boring 3D World at any rate.

Oh also, while the propeller cap looked stupid the squirl suit was stupid! I died so many times trying to figure out how to reliably work that suit.

That said they HAD to get this game out of the way before Maker. I’ve been thinking for a while that Mario Maker 2 was gonna be the big game for Switch next year, and I’m still leaning toward that being the Holiday game. (Though Pokemon might take that title) Maker was one of the few gameS that sold insanely well on the Wii U. They already did MK8, Zelda, Mario, and Splatoon in the first year, and Smash and Pokemon and Kirby this year. They’ve announced Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem and Yoshi for next year, there aren’t that many other for sure hits left for them to pull from
For that big holiday push.

I think the lack of Odyseey DLC means they probably decided to roll everything they were doing into a sequel. (Which is smart) and I think they HAVE to be doing a BotW sequel in the same engine.

But I think those Mario and Zelda game’s will probably be saved until everything they can develop faster like Mario Maker 2. I wouldn’t be surprised if they planned those games to be enhanced by the “New Nintendo Switch” which will probably ship as a combination of a handheld and as an optional enhanced Dock. The dock would be for people who only want to play high fedelity games at home and stick to simpler games on the go, where as the new portable would be for people who want both. The new system will have whatever parts Nvidea can give them. (Hopefully they’ll pick whatever is bleeding edge when it comes out) and you’ll be able to play new games with better looks and enhanced lighting, while lots of games coming out in the future will be able to run on the whole family of systems.

I really enjoyed New Super Mario Bros. U on the Wii U (never played the Luigi U add-on). There isn't quite enough here to convince me to double-dip though.

Also for anyone who hasn’t played Luigi U the levels all have a 99 second clock. You actually run the risk of dying from a time out.

@Toads-Friend agreed. When this launched originally on Wii U, many critics pointed out how it's VERY, VERY similar to the Wii version. I doubt this will really sell that well on Switch- probably do like Tropical Freeze (minimal).

@DavidMac Captain Toad on Switch doesn't tie into 3D world like it did on Wii U, it ties into Odyssey at the end.

Meh. I'm okay with this kind of port. People who didn't buy the Wii U have the chance to play it and Nintendo has the chance to sell it to them (the latter is the real reason, otherwise they'd make ports we actually need like Mother 3). But it doesn't really have any new content from the looks of it, so I'm not missing out on anything by not buying the game a second time. Hopefully there's still another brand new 2D Mario (or 3D Mario) game on the way though.

@pika677 not sure you get what a game engine is. Mario Odyseey 1 and 2 feel really similar because they’re built inside a computer framework that is filled with a bunch of stuff that is reused and universal through out the game.

Captain Toad and 3D World were made in the same engine. They did all the work to get Toad over, at this point it’s almost just a copy and paste job to get 3D World running on the Switch.

This game should at least sell D-pad controllers.

@pika677 agreed I think Zero is one of the few Nintendo made games from the Wii U that should be left on the platform. (Also I’d be so pissed off if they rereleased it with fixed aiming for one screen on the Switch since I paid full price for it on the Wii U and eventually just gave up since the controls were so bad.

This is far and away the best NSMB game in my opinion, especially factoring in the Luigi game. I 100%ed the games on Wii U, and I’m going to buy it again on Switch. This is honestly a dream announcement for me, playing on Switch sounds amazing.

I'm gonna buy it again, after all it's still 2D Mario at its best and it's the third game of both the New series. Why do I say that cause this new Deluxe version is the third release of the series both in portable and console form so in truth it is both the sequel to New Super Mario Bros. and New Super Mario Bros. 2 as well as New Super Mario Bros. Wii and New Super Mario Bros. U.

I want it, hopefully not for $60. I have many questions though... may just hold on to my copy of Mario U on Wii U.

@AlexSora89 TBF, no point releasing this after Maker/a Maker 2 if you can make or download all the levels in a Switch Maker. They're just cashing in on a 2D Mario but without making a new one because lets face it, the Switch is a hot selling system so any players who skipped on Wii U to cash in.

I'm hopeful a Maker port/sequel will happen around the 2019 holidays. With such a big buzz the original had, Nintendo would be silly to put off a Mario Maker any further than that, especially if any possible Odyssey sequel that could happen is far far in the future....

It's a mostly 2D Mario... I might actually get this one. If only for family gatherings.

@TJWorks I think it was a great showing but I agree there also wasn’t a huge amount for me there - Except - Daemon X Machina still looks great. Yoshi looks great too, but not sure it’s my thing.. I’d go a Yoshi’s island remake for sure though.

I’m really hanging out for a good racing game - i.e F1 (CM) or Dirt series, Wave Race, F-Zero etc.

V-Rally is giving me the mobile game feelings, rather than a quality game.

I pray (er, not literally, blasphemy isn't my thing) that the 2019 guess proves to be true. I mean, Maker would have singlehandedly turned the Switch Online Service into a cash cow ever since the latter's day-one. But nooooooo, why not cashing on NSMB first?!

I would have been ok with just about any other Wii U port, but they had to do this one eh? Port Pikmin 3 or like so many other people have already said Mario 3d world. This is Nintendo's nostalgic bread and butter for crying out loud. GIVE US A NEW 2D MARIO GAME.

I still haven't cleared my Wii U version yet... so not interested.

Does anyone else have a problem with Toadette turning into Princess Peach? It goes against the rules of power ups in the previous Mario games where they simply enhance your abilities, instead of transforming you into a different character. This also undermines Toadette as a stand-alone character. It would be reading a little too far into it to say it also presents a body image issue where it is implied the super powered version of a short chubby female toad character turns into a tall skinny blonde princess, but it does sort of convey that doesn’t it?

I hope they reconsider this ability and give us Peach and Toadette as standalone characters. I think she should have her own unique abilities separate from Peach.

I actually really enjoyed this but quit playing early because 3D World came out.

I would consider this again if it's priced fair. However, I doubt that will be the case. Most likely will be around $50. But it should be around $20.

Don’t really see what the big deal about Peachette is. It’s a bit weird, but Mario can turn into pretty much anything by collecting a Mystery Mushroom in Mario Maker. We also see Mario, Luigi, Wario and Yoshi transform into one another in Super Mario 64 DS by collecting the respective caps. Super leaves also turn Bowser’s minions into body doubles for the Big Bad himself.

Then again, Peach’s grandmother is apparently a Toad in Mario RPG. So who knows?

Still regret selling my physical copy of New Super Luigi U, and New Super Mario Bros U is still on my list of games to get. There isn't many games left in the Wii U library they haven't ported at this point.

Having completed both U and luigi U 100%, I almost would have preferred that the Wii version be included instead of or preferably with this.

Then again I would outright prefer Mario Maker V2

I feel like I would get this at some point, but it's low on my list. Felt like more of the same from NSMB Wii.
