We often find ourselves marvelling at the skill and dedication required to pull off a successful speedrunning attempt here at Nintendo Life, and this case is no different.
LilKirbs14, a speedrunner who's relatively new to the scene, has been attempting to take the top spot for Super Mario Odyssey's 'Any%' record for a little while now. Not too long ago, one of his attempts missed that target by an agonising six seconds, but he's now managed to fully achieve the dream. Luckily for all of us, the video below shows the entire run - perhaps this is one to stream to the TV tonight for family dinner time.
The run successfully takes the crown away from all-star NicroVeda, pushing the fastest completion time down to an incredible 1:01:42 at the time of writing, and has been particularly noteworthy because of LilKirbs14's relative lack of speedrunning experience. By this, we mean his lack of experience compared to bigger names in the speedrunning community - he does also hold second place runs in the New Super Mario Bros. U and Super Mario Maker Any% categories, so he's quickly working his way up.
As ever, feel free to share your thoughts with us in the comments below. Would you be brave enough to attempt at speedrun on one of your favourite games?

I'm not one who tries speed running but I enjoy watching videos and seeing good gamers play.
@NintendoFan4Lyf I agree. I watched a speed run of Wind Waker and the runner said he has been playing the game almost non-stop for a year. I could never do that.
Kudos.
i really don't understand the speedrunners
@ReaderRagfish Or maybe even playing other games!
@NintendoFan4Lyf While I do imagine speedrunners sometimes get sick of the games they dedicate themselves too, they also probably get to understand them better than anyone else.. possibly even more than the developers themselves!
@Auenegheps I mean, for one it is one of the best ways for streamers to get viewers which affects their income. Speedrunning is more work than play.
@ShadJV ah ok. it's not for fun. it's only for youtube. because i can't see where is the fun in a speedrun
Why don't they use English consoles lol and stop pausing it and all that crap, when I was doing speed runs I'd play the whole thing no pause and load crap
I suppose it depends on what one means when they say he "beat the game". Surely he didn't collect all 3918 moons, or however many there are.
@Auenegheps I mean that’s not necessarily entirely true, plenty still enjoy it, though usually for competitive reasons - they like being high on the leaderboards. But a lot of speed runners I’ve seen don’t speedrun in their downtime, they already get to practice 20-40 hours a week for “work”, when they’re not streaming they play other games... or have other hobbies entirely. Otherwise they burn out.
@NintendoFan4Lyf: "I feel bad for the Digital Foundry guys too. I wonder if they can ever turn off their analysis brains and just enjoy the game without noticing all the smoke & mirror tricks used to accomplish the visuals. It’s fascinating to watch, but I bet maddening to research."
Do it long enough and you eventually learn to compartmentalize and turn off that part of your brain. As someone who has been in the professional video production industry for nearly three decades, It's the only way I can enjoy watching TV shows and movies. I'm sure the Digital Foundry guys are the same way.
@NintyNate that’s how you get the top of the leaderboards, if you don’t then you never even have a shot. Japanese text usually loads faster, saving a fraction of a second each time (which adds up to seconds or even minutes in the speedrun), and saving, exiting, and reloading can sometimes save time as it can skip small chunks of game. For PBs, you don’t have to resort to this if you don’t want to, but for WRs, you have to, because even if you can beat this time without doing those tricks, someone can then beat your time with the same routing if they do use them. They’re all accepted strats by the community.
Kudos! Wonder if I ever get a post for being such an excellent slow runner.
