Sega has released the first in a series of 'spotlight' videos for Team Sonic Racing, starting off with a showcase of the game's team mechanics.
As you can see in the video, Sonic and friends can work together to gain an advantage over opponent racers. We get to see the Skimboost, Slingshot, Rival Takedown, Item Box Transfer, and the mighty Team Ultimate in action, all of which can help you to turn the tide when things are rough on the race track.
For your reference - because we're kind like that - here's all of the revealed mechanics and what they do in written form:
– Skimboost: Boost struggling teammates back into action as you drive by!
– Slingshot: Slipstream a teammate for a slingshot boost!
– Rival Takedown: Knock out highlighted opponents ahead and speed past them!
– Item Box Transfer: Send and receive Wisps with teammates anywhere on the track!
– Team Ultimate: Use Team Mechanics to fill your Team Ultimate meter and unleash a massive team boost!
The video also presents the very first footage of Team Rose, a "loveable" new trio, and Ice Mountain, a frozen terrain that is said to offer a challenge to players across all skill levels.
Team Sonic Racing is still scheduled to release on Nintendo Switch this winter, although we're still waiting on that all-important specific release date.
Are you liking what you've seen so far for the game? Let us know below.

All these gimmicks, just concentrate on making a solid racer unlike your previous efforts please!
Ah, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still the Best for me.
I was so hoping they did something like Sonic R. Sonic in a kart just seems off to me lol. Amy and Egg Man belong in a kart so they can keep up with Sonic, Shadow, and etc.
It's nice that they're trying to make it unique among current kart-racers but boy do i miss when this series was a who's-who of SEGA mascots and IP's.
Will it have online multiplayer with friends as well as voice chat to be able to strategize the item swap feature?
(Doubt it)
I never could get into Sonic Racing Transformed; it just didn't feel right. The standard karts felt like you were either glued to the track or you glide across it like you're in your socks on a polished floor, that and the course design felt mediocre at best.
While I'd prefer another All Stars Racing game, this trailer definitely did a better job of making the game look fun compared to the last one. I'll definitely give it a try, hopefully they'll give us a demo.
The frame drops at points in the trailer highlight when they change from PS4 to Switch footage. Heck it's blunt as all get out. Gross.
This just looks more and more bland.
@N64SNESU Unlike the previous efforts? the previous efforts were actually good though, especially transformed.
@NF6429 it may have been good but I couldn't get over the terrible framerate especially after playing mk8 to give it a chance
Eek, the more they show, the less I'm interested.
@N64SNESU The previous sega racing games were incredible, what are you talking about
@prince-jay they played like a one legged dog on both Wii U and 3ds
@GrailUK same with me. First was disappointed with it being only sonic not Sega, then the first trailer arrived and the tracks didn’t look great and seemed to play slow and this one just urghhh, no thanks
Sonic Heroes Racing
I love the idea of passing items to your teammates who have fallen behind. This just got a lot more interesting! We still seem to be missing out on a lot of potential racers and I haven't spotted any recognizable locations, but I think the new team mechanics might make up for the lack of flavor.
@Hikingguy I will buy it even though I hated the previous game, I just pray it plays at 60fps like mk8
Knuckle's voice seems pretty bad. Really listen to him say "AWESOME BOOST THANKS"
I hope this turns out to be OK. It will be the first real physical AAA racing game for the Switch.
Yes I know about Mario Kart but how ever you dress it up it is still a port from the Wii u and is not a new game. Nintendo can use smoke and mirrors, put more icing on the cake and even add a cherry, but you are paying twice for the same game.
This game still looks slow...
Something looks a little off about the physics here. SART I fear was great by accident.
Can anyone explain to me how suddenly in 2018 SEGA of all companies would not be making top notch racing games? I mean it's SEGA....and racing.....?
I was not a fan of Sonic transformed.
It controlled more like need for speed, but tried at the same time be a arcade kart racer. The result I disliked immensely.
I'm hopeful this is better than transformed, but unless it gets crazy good reviews I'll pass. I don't need another mediocre kart racer.
Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is the second best kart racer ever so I hope this is great as well. First being CTR obviously.
This is excellent news, I was rooting for the game but kept wondering if something was missing. WIth the announcement of the team mechanics especially the skimboost, slingboost, and item transfer my worries have been put to rest.
I look forward to this offering another great racing which doesn't have too much gimmicks but offers a totally unique racing style of its on.
I look forward to the nickleodeon racer too I just hope both this and it offer grand prix and cup wining modes in local co-op as mario kart has always done so that instead of just playing the main campaign/racing mode solo the player can also do it with at least one other friend.
I think sonic's new game may do just that but I'm worried about the nick racer on that front, also I think sonic should absolutely differentiante itself from mario kart since sega has a greater chance in rivaling nintendo's kart racer in terms of quality, but I'm not looking for the the new nick racer to be so unique although something like character specific items like seen in double dash that operate on cool downs and don't have to be attained would be something to make it unique.
Although I wouldn't want that in this new sonic racer since it suits the nick racer better since its characters are all from different worlds and have enough backstory where such a thing would feel like natural enxtensions of their personality and backstory.
I was looking forward to this game ... until I saw the video. It just looks all kinds of wrong, and the music and voices were terrible. I’ll still reserve judgment for the finished product, but my excitement is waning
@NewAdvent okay I'm curious. How is mk8dx bad value for money (assmuning you don't have it on Wii u, which it sounds like you don't.)
It has an insane 48 unique tracks, a much needed battle mode with 8 more tracks, tons of racers and car parts, and a well done online all in a highly polished kart racer.
What would you have wanted to make it a proper value for your money? I'm legitimately curious btw, not shooting you down.
Slingshot engaged. The clear Ricky Bobby aside, meh.
I'm excited for it im not gonna lie I have been playing Mario kart 8 since the Wii u unless they ad more dlc I wish they would but know they won't. I'm burnt out on Mario kart 8.
Thank goodness Sega have shown how bad an idea this is so Nintendo don't make the mistake when they are looking for a new angle with Mario Kart 9.
Seriously, Transformed was such a good game why not just build on that?!
@link3710
I agree with you! I had it on Wii U but still consider the Switch version value for money. The extra item box and extra boost (seriously they changed the way I play) plus all the DLC makes it more than worth the price. Plus 10 million and counting agree so Nintendo won't cry over some who think it is too expensive.
@NewAdvent @link3710
I'm also curious. Do you have it on WiiU?
I liked Racing Transformed. And so far, I was happy for this. But me too, I don't feel good about this team feature
Where's Team Waluigi?
Not feeling it....too many gimmicks instead of mechanics
And I keep waiting for a kart racing game that offers an adventure/story mode like we had in Crash Team Racing (normal Grand Prix Tournaments + Adventure Mode with challenges and achievements to unlock next stages and percentage to achieve)
This is one of my most wanted games this year. I love a good kart racer and this looks really good. I loved Transformed, can't wait for this.
Sorry but in terms of gameplay and performance it's still not that impressive compare to All-Stars Racing Transformed. Hopefully the Story Mode could save this game.
@NewAdvent Ah I see. From you're phrasing, I was assuming you meant that you hadn't played MK8. I can definitely see it if you've already played the base game.
@Obitokamui64 Hm? Well... long story short, I do technically have it on Wii U now from someone who ditched their system, but I ended up not playing it cause DX was announced right after.
For me, Racing Transformed was the best racer on the Wii U, so I'm staying optimistic.
