DAEMON X MACHINA was one of E3 2018's big surprises on Switch, and Nintendo knows that this year's Gamescom event is the perfect platform to share a little more info on the title.
With that in mind, the company has released a new teaser trailer for Kenichiro Tsukuda's upcoming mech-based epic, which showcases character design, massive robot action and much more besides. It's quite a teaser!
Developed by Marvelous Entertainment, DAEMON X MACHINA launches exclusively on Switch next year. We'll be going hands-on with it during Gamescom, so keep your eyes peeled for more impressions.

looks mech-nificent!
This trailer is mech-ing me excited.
This game is too Japanese, won't sell very well in the West.
i was hoping for a new music track instead they used the same one from the e3 trailer and some old video clips, too. still a cool trailer.
Man, I'm sold already, but hopefully we see more in the Nintendo presentation on Thursday.
Looks so damn fun, love my Switch and exclusives like this only reinforce that love
It does look like a visually stunning anime, but I'll need a demo to be convinced this isn't just a robot dynasty warrior directed by Michael Bay.
I'm not sure I like the sliding around. It feels like there's no weight to the alleged mech.
@Nincompoop So was Gundam, too Japanese yet popular in the west.
Other commenters:
‘There’s no weight’
‘It looks like a mess’
‘Generic music’
‘It won’t sell’
Me: ‘HOLY HECK this looks like a cel-shaded version of the best bits from Xenoblade X only fully real-time GAME OF 2019 CONFIRMED’
I need to work on my cynicism, clearly.
My my... Nintendo doing a Mech game is curious enough. But when they do, they certainly don't mess around...! (well, Nintendo usually don't mess around when they decide to side step into - for them - unusual genres; like with Splatoon). Love what I'm seeing (and hearing). Looking forward to it very much.
@Balladeer Don't worry, Nintendo fans just hate everything new.
Just read the credits. Shoji Kawamori is a Legend in Anime Mech Design of Macross and Patlabor fame... so since the 80s actually. They truly don't mess around, hiring the best in the industry in the respective fields apparently.
I never played a Mech-game before and don't know what they should be like. I love the art-style, but think the environments look a bit empty. Also I wish they would stop it with the Death Metal already and I hope that won't play too much of a role in the game's soundtrack. Liked the music in the last scene though.
Looks awesome!
@Varubajia Stop yapping and I'll give you a treat.
I'm super excited!
@NewAdvent
I'm like you on that. There is something "dirty and dull" that push me off.
And in this trailer/teaser, I can see that the game seems to be kind of slow but the way they have mounted the trailer "trick" it. It's like they want to dynamize the game because in reality the game is slow.
Dunno, there is something "disturbing" with this game. I'm waiting to see more for the moment... Wait and see.
@Nincompoop
Too Japanese? Street Fighter, Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden... all super Japanese (DMC's original form, with Japanese mo-cap and contrived dialogue) , and ridiculously popular upon release. Hell, they re-released Ninja Gaiden like 3 times.
@Balladeer I’m right there with you I think this game looks amazing but you kno what they say about opinions
Looks exciting, but of course trailers can look exciting. I will have to wait for more info. Also hopefully the red skies won’t be there that often.
No arguments here on it being “too Japanese”; plus I prefer their take on mecha with more fast paced combat. Makes it more feasible that they would be built if the technology existed whilst Western mecha tends to be limbering designs whose capabilities can be recreated more efficiently through traditional weapons platforms.
I want to see some actual gameplay, not pre-arranged trailers cut to intensify hype. I'm still on board but I've had enough of trailers and I want more details about the game itself. Campaign length, play modes, number of mechs in the game for both players and enemies...some nuts and bolts.
One of my most anticipated games! Can not wait for this!
3 things that prove this game will be quality
Nintendo are funding it, they're publishing it and it's being promoted as a major title. Most importantly they opened their E3 show with it.They wouldn't do this with a bad or even average game.
It's being created by the most experienced Mech games developers around and now having more funding than they've ever had before will allow them to make the kind of game they've always wanted to.Same goes for the guy doing the art, best in their field.
It's got giant flying customisable mechs with enormous weapons and destructable cities.
So yep, this game will be outstanding.
I feel kind of dumb asking this but does anyone know how to pronounce it?
Is it demon cross machine-uh or maybe demon ex mach-eena (like deus ex machina)?
Go ahead, Mech my day!
Not hugely into mech stuff but this looks very good
looks interesting.
could be cool, could be something like mad world that flopped like a beached fish.
or anything in between.
Oh I hear you I was completely agreeing with you, the comment section on this site is quite interesting sometimes
Pumped!!
@Dualmask It was playable during E3. Go check out the tree house videos for it. The actual gameplay looks impressive to me.
Looking great and it's going to be a great way to kick off 2019!
I'm very excited to get this game. Fell in love with art style and concept immediately
Is this defo a Ninty exclusive??? And also who is the band playing!? I wanna know!
I’ve always wanted to try a good mech game. I guess this is my chance.
@Balladeer Nah, you're totally right and all those other people are wrong. I watched this and thought "man I hope my save data carries over from Xenoblade X!"
Looks great, and I don't understand all the negativity, especially considering the people that are behind this game. The content will be top-notch, and it definitely does NOT look dull or empty.
It looks like a stylized anime, in 3D, which is nothing else but simply awesome.
@Dualmask Try looking up the E3 Treehouse coverage for this game. There's a bit more gameplay there (though I suspect it's more of a tutorial/demo mode, but it should give you a better sense of pacing and the like). All said, I am super excited for this game!
Sorry, just noticed that Ballistic90 replied the exact same thing...
Not sure how I feel yet about the graphical style, but everything else looks great! Can't wait to read some impressions in a few days.
This game looks so insanely pumped!
I'm really digging the visual style, but I'm not much of a fan of animé mechs or metal riffs, so here's hoping it really impresses in the raw gameplay department!
@ballistic90 @Gorfvic20 thanks folks, I didn't know that was out there.
Not a fan of the visuals at all, but hopefully it'll be fun for those interested.
I’ve noticed some of the mechs look very similar to the ones in xenoblade chronicles x. Don’t know if it’s just me.
I don't even know what I'm looking at.
And what awful music.
Where's the actual gameplay???
It amazes me Nintendo put this mess of a game in their E3 Direct.
Man.... This game looks gorgeous! Feels just like an action Manga anime movie. Really hyped about this one!
@The-Chosen-one me too, I’m hoping for a special edition
Love the aesthetic, the concept and the soundtrack. I am concerned about the gameplay, but this is my most anticipated Switch title currently.
I really do hope this game turns out to be good. Not just because I want a good mech game - I've had countless let downs over the years - but also because I hope the Switch picks up a new exclusive that does well.
This is definitely one of the most beautiful art styles I ever saw in a game. Not very keen on metal but i would play this game just for this amazing soundtrack (if it is even in the game itself). Also never played a mech but I will wait and see. Count me as intrigued
@Dualmask
Have a look at the E3 Treehouse gameplay they showed. It's a pretty decent looking game and they are still in the process of making it.
Edit: My bad, other peoples have already told you
Looking good
@reanimator136 It's pronounced Daymon Ex Makina, just take a look at the video below.
@Dualmask Instead of people telling you to look up gameplay of the E3 2018 Treehouse session, I'll just post that video for you right here:
@FX102A, @Cobalt, @Tiefseemiez, @SmaggTheSmug, @Rhaoulos, @NewAdvent, @Balta666, @Heavyarms55, @RailX, @subpopz, @LUIGITORNADO, @Pod, @Tyranexx
I'll just notify all of you to this comment as well, seeing as most of you wondered about the gameplay in one way or another, so I'd like to give you all a heads up regarding the gameplay video I posted here.
You're welcome...
@Tiefseemiez, @SmaggTheSmug, @Rhaoulos, @subpopz, @Tyranexx
Apparently, the site is acting up, so for some reason, your names didn't get linked in the above comment, so this comment is just meant as another attempt to try and achieve that...
@ThanosReXXX
There really seems to be a lot of stuff to do, and a very refined system behind it all. And this is one of the most thoroughly art directed 3D games I've seen in years. It's consistently striking.
@Pod Indeed. It's really not as empty as some people seem to think it is, and it most certainly does look striking. Definitely on the must-have list for me.
@ThanosReXXX
Thanks. I got a notification for your first comment. I guess you quoted too many people in a single comment so it started acting up.
I think the gameplay video looks much better than the messy teaser.
@ThanosReXXX
Thank you for the video...
Soooo, I've checked it and the only thing that I can say is that my eyes are bleeding...
I don't get how it's possible to have a game that poor in textures and 3D models and not being able to put antialiasing with such resolution ? I don't get it.
I'm gonna wait to see if they change things until release but in this state, I'm not gonna jump in.
@Rhaoulos it does indeed, doesn't it?
@Cobalt You're welcome. I think that for one thing, we should take into account the (to this day) still horrible video compression on YouTube, so it's not completely representative of the actual game, and we would actually have to see native footage in real life to be able to truly appreciate it in its true form.
And other than that, as mentioned at the start of the video, that was just the beta, and that's a video from two months ago, and as a developer yourself, you'd probably know that a lot can happen in two months, if it concerns final tweaks. And of course, while they took the beta to the E3, work was more than likely still going on, back in the Marvelous studio...
@ThanosReXXX
That's why I said "I'm gonna wait to see if they change things until release"
I swear I've checked the video on my 50" because I play on that screen, gosh I really cross my fingers to get an AA worthy of the name.
Still not fan of the color palette but I can handle it if the gameplay is really good... Wait and see...
PS : I know that's not the same type of game but when I run The Legend of Zelda the Windwaker HD on a Wii U, a system with 1Gb Ram for games, everything is clean like crazy. So I expect a CellShaded game on the Switch as clean as Winderwaker HD on a Switch(better GPGPU, 4Gb Ram...)
PS2 : I play 99% of my time docked but it's possible that the game is gonna be acceptable on the 720p screen of the Switch... dunno ?
@Cobalt I actually think that it is going to look better on a smaller screen. Just watch that video on your phone or tablet, and you'll already see the difference. On the average smart phone, you could even get away with sub-720p, and it could still look pretty decent.
As for it going to be a high quality game: considering the names behind it, and what they have done (in short: a LOT of experience both with anime and mech games, but look it up if you're curious), I myself am pretty confident, that this is going to be a solid title.
@subpopz Haha, I already kinda figured that people asking about gameplay had missed that. I'm one of those crazy people that has literally watched ALL of the E3 videos live as they happened, and not just the Nintendo ones...
@ThanosReXXX: Thanks for the video. I think I did find it during E3 but never fully got through it for some reason or other (Something likely came up lol). I'm not sure if there have been playable demos before Gamescom, so I am curious to learn what other avenues think of the game so far after they give it a spin.
@Tyranexx In the description underneath the video on its own YouTube page, it mentions something about people being able to try it out on the show floor, so I'm pretty sure that the YouTube regulars, who review Nintendo stuff, will have recorded some of their own experiences with the game, on their own channels.
I'd take a wild guess and I'd be inclined to name IGN and NintendoWorldReport as two of the most likely candidates to have Daemon X Machina-related videos in their playlists...
@ThanosReXXX
I understand your point about the names behind the game. Sure that gives a certain confidence to the title... but Inafune was behind Mighty N°9 for example soooo...
I want to believe that the game is gonna be good, the Switch really needs exclusives and good ones. We'll see in 2019. ^^
@Cobalt Yup. Nothing that we can do but wait. In the mean time,
I choose to stay cautiously optimistic...
@ThanosReXXX: I see. I might search when I get the chance then. NL mentioned something about a hands-on article incoming, so I was under the impression that a lot of the press hadn't gotten a chance to try this one out.
@ThanosReXXX thanks, I actually found the video yesterday but I guess I need to do better about keeping up with the video coverage of a game I'm interested in. I'm glad so many folks informed me though, helpful folks you are.
@Cobalt By the way: I've looked at the list of names tied to this game (shown at the end of the trailer in this article), and I don't see Inafune mentioned anywhere.
The credit page mentions:
Producer - Kenichiro Tsukuda
Mechanical Concept Design - Shoji Kawamori
Character Design - Yusuke Kozaki
Music - Junichi Nakatsuru/Rio Hamamoto
Director - Ken Awata/Ken Karube
So, that should be one worry less for you...
Now, Kenichiro Tsukuda himself is pretty well-known, amongst other things, for producing the famous mech game series Armored Core, and his partner in crime on this game, Shoji Kawamori is a famous anime creator and producer, screenwriter, visual artist, and mecha designer, responsible for the Macross anime series and movies, and quite a few others. In all of them, he has handled the design of the mechs and other machines.
And while searching for more info, I also came across this page, which has an article consisting of a pretty in-depth interview with Kenichiro Tsukuda, so you might find that an interesting read...
https://nintendoeverything.com/daemon-x-machina-producer-on-the-gameplay-graphics-world-setting-more/
@Tyranexx Well, you can save yourself the trouble: I was feeling particularly helpful and "searchy" today, but oddly enough, there isn't any other gameplay video out there, besides the official Treehouse one. Really strange, especially since it literally says "Check out more gameplay for DAEMON X MACHINA from the Nintendo show floor at E3 2018!" in the description underneath that video.
You'd think that someone trying it out on the show floor, would almost certainly record it, especially if they're from a gaming channel or website, but apparently, that hasn't happened. People being extremely tight-lipped, or so it would seem...
(or perhaps Nintendo has slapped them with a good old NDA... )
@Dualmask You're welcome. And yes, this is one of the most social websites that I know. One of the reasons I stick around, and why I also feel more inclined to be helpful myself as well. Besides a few glaring exceptions, it's a pretty decent community.
@ThanosReXXX
Yeah Inafune is not working on it, it wasn't my point !
I wanna say that you base yourself on the fact that there are big names behind the game so I replied to you that Inafune was behind Mighty N°9, meaning that a big name behind a game means nothing today...
When Inafune made Mighty N°9, a lot of people said stuff like : "wow if Inafune is making Mighty N°9, we're gonna get a fantastic game because ya know Megaman blah blah blah...".
Result ? The game was terrible...
BTW, Iga is right now behind Bloodstained and for the moment, it's not really great too... :/
So, big names don't mean especially good games.
@Cobalt Ah, okay, I misunderstood you there, then.
But now that I do, I won't make the joke that Iga isn't part of the Daemon X Machina team either...
You do have a point though, but we also know that a lot of bad stuff was happening during the development of Mighty No 9, and I had the distinct idea, that he simply tried to do too much, instead of just keeping it simple and clean, and all of that combined, created the hot mess that it became.
In this game here, there are more specialists on board than Inafune had, and they're also people with far more experience in the subject matter, and so far, there isn't anything known about any development issues. In fact, regardless of some arguably needed cosmetic upgrades, the game already seemed to be in a good place, structurally speaking.
Of course, even a decent beta isn't proof of a good end result, so we'll have to wait and see how it ultimately turns out, regardless.
@ThanosReXXX: Bummer. I suspect there was a NDA somewhere, or else the gameplay was just some footage you could passively watch on a screen or something.
In any case, thanks for looking and saving me the trouble!
@ThanosReXXX Thank you so much. Really appreciated.
@Tyranexx No problem, had nothing much on my hands anyway, so it was also nice to be able to keep myself busy with something.
As for the rather strange absence of any other gameplay footage:
well, they did say "check out more gameplay on the show floor", not "check out the exact same gameplay we already showed in the Treehouse on the show floor", so there are most certainly some questions remaining on that part...
Oh, well. We could always invite the NLife crew to see if they've played or have seen any more of it on the show floor, and if they did, if they're also allowed to speak of it.
Or maybe we should just wait for the inevitable hands-on which will undoubtedly be posted right here on NLife...
@RailX You're welcome. Hope it was of some help, or at the very least informative beyond what you already knew.
@ThanosReXXX Absolutely. If I am to be honest though, the game would have to be pretty broken for me not to buy. Super stoked for this one.
@RailX Yeah, I'm sort of in the middle on that. I do like a mech game every now and then, but it does need to have some quality, but going by the beta footage, I'm cautiously optimistic that they will actually pull it off, so I hope I'm not proven wrong when it ultimately releases...
@ThanosReXXX: I'm thinking the hands-on articles that are to come might be a safe bet for now.
@Tyranexx To some extent, yes. But I could never completely rely on someone else's opinion, because no matter how well researched, I'm just not able or willing to blindly trust any review, like some people do: I will still need to experience some things for myself, and make up my own mind.
But I'm crazy like that: I also go to movies that are destroyed by critics, and I actually often do enjoy them, regardless of those critiques.
@ThanosReXXX: That's typically why I shoot for multiple opinions from different avenues for games like DXM (or franchises I'm unfamiliar with). It's also why I like demos, though those don't always serve as the best examples either.
@Tyranexx True. I still have multiple demos on my Xbox 360, as we speak, either because they're vastly different from the final product, or simply because they're more entertaining than the actual game, which I may even have traded in already...
They certainly do have their place! They don't always make or break things for me. Overall I'm glad that I took the plunge on the first Yo-Kai Watch game despite the demo being rather meh. Conversely, I found the demo for Fire Emblem: Awakening so enjoyable that it more or less got me into the entire series.
