Uhm, that's definitely the Super Mario All-Stars version of Super Mario 3, so at least it makes sense to be played with a SNES controller... Then again, it's not included with the SNES Mini.

They probably plugged in some dodgy bootleg emulator device…

Ya that's not the original Mario 3 version found on the nes. But you could plus the snes mini controller into the nes mini and it does work

The SNES and NES Classic Minis do actually share the same controller ports - I've been playing all my NES Mini games with the the SNES controller simply because the cord length on the SNES Mini controllers is longer than my pinky finger.

Those aren't SNES controllers: you can see they have no cable. They must be the 8bitdo Bluetooth version or something of the kind.

I don't think, however, that there is any official setup where you can play Super Mario All Stars on an HDMI device, so... emulator alert!

Not gonna point out what everyone has above about the game being Super Mario All-Stars. Or that the Mini series controllers all work the same.

However to say that you can't play a SNES on a HDMI is very wrong (this is without using something like RetroPi and a downloaded ROM)

• They could be using a SCART to HDMI adapter.
• Using a modern clone console like a RetroN 5 or Retro Freak which all work with the original controllers (and 8Bitdo controllers) and carts.

Super Mario All Stars is on the SNES. I would expect Nintendo Life to know that.

Is Nintendolife blind? 'Cause they clearly can't tell the diff between an 8-bit game and a 16-bit game!

@Sgt-Jack-V they've been blinded by too much of the 8/16 bit graphics being released on retro style games. Now any game with 2D sprites is a 8bit game to them. The poor souls need to be sent to play proper retro games to re-learn the difference.

I love how the Facebook post asks what's the reader's favourite retro arcade game, when SMB3 was mostly known as an NES game and was only released in the arcade for the Playchoice 10 series of arcade machines

Of course they don't need to have any kind of HDMI device or emulator. It's just two actors holding controllers and a gameplay video superimposed in post-production.

As to whether they need permission from Nintendo, or whether the ad could be considered misleading, i have no idea.

@topher6490 Nailed it. There were even club Nintendo SNES controllers for Wii Remotes before the SNES Classic ones. It's embarrassing Nintendolife, a professional Nintendo news outlet, couldn't figure this out, let alone identify the game.

It is the SNES version of super Mario bros 3, so it’s not too weird that snes controllers are being used. it could be a super Nt mini hooked up with a super Mario bros all stars cart being played?

Hmmm it could also be the Mario Advance 4 version, which is available on the Wii U eshop and could be plugged in via HDMI. My image is blurry so it's sort of tough to tell.

Video games in a monitor in a car..... It's as though every Honda doesn't already come with their own 1st party version of Gran Turismo/Forza/Project Cars on the bit 45" screen up front?

@AxeltheBuizel SMB3 had it's own limited arcade cabinet. It was a promotional push before the game actually released on the NES, sometime between The Wizard and release. I waited in line for some time to play that and died from the goobmas coming out of the pipes in the first world....this was after spending every waking moment of life on SMB/SMB2.....

@McHaggis @Crono1973 That means it's an electric car and, while it's recharging, they've used a nearby socket to plug in their Wii U too! Mystery solved! ;-D

Jokes aside, those classic controllers also have a cable I don't see in the video. But I guess maybe you can stick the 8bitdo Retro Receiver into a Wii remote and then play with the 8bitdo SF30.

The whole setup (Wii U in a car included) sounds too convoluted to be true ;-D

It's probably just a Retro Pi someone mod into the car's monitor and install emulators to run roms on it. Like phones, cars are becoming more and more like PC as well except they are use for transportation. Newer cars had PC functionality and even connection for USB and HDMI monitor install, also that game is obviously the Super Mario All-Stars version of Super Mario Bros. 3, to which version SNES or Wii doesn't really matter, both are the same game regardless of platform.

@Octorok385 Can't be Super Mario Advance 4 though as in that version the scorings are located on the top side of the screen, in this screenshot they obviously show the All-Stars version of SMB3 which still had that blue scoring bar on the very bottom.

Looks like Honda has a hacked Classic Edition, nothing more or less, as long as it wasn't some faked feed.

Even if it was the NES version, it could well be a "modified" SNES Mini.

And I say "modified" because there is another word that has been censored the other two times I tried to upload the post with a "sorry, you are unable to post comments at this moment".

Official SNES Mini controllers actually have "SUPER NINTENDO" printed on them and aren't wireless. That, along with the fact that Super Mario All-Stars isn't on the SNES Mini, safely rules out the that that's what this is. On the other hand, there are wireless 3rd party SNES-style controllers available for Switch, so if this is a real product, and not just a generic mock-up, it's more likely the Switch (assuming a 16-bit version of SMB3 is indeed coming to the online service). Of course, the generic mock-up scenario is by far the most likely (they wouldn't likely be using 3rd party controllers if they were actually collaborating with Nintendo).

Why the surprise? Isn't that the All-Stars (SNES) version of Super Mario Bros. 3? It could possibly be that they have a working SNES in the car that's connected through a HDMI converter?

@NintoRich Positive, I played it myself! There was also a Metroid cabinet at one point. They seemed very limited, but they were definitely US cabinets as Japan wasn't using the upright cabinets even then, and they appeared and vanished in months. I presume they were re-purposed from other hardware, maybe PC10, but the PC10 artwork was changed (or covered) with generic Nintendo/Mario 3 artwork and the game selection interface wasn't active, it was just a dedicated Mario 3 environment with lives triggering coin insertion rather than the fixed timed play of PC10. And it was pre-launch for the home game after The Wizard.

In hindsight it was like the Best Buy E3 demo play events they did for WiiU except as an arcade cabinet.

If it weren't the all-stars version it would make perfect sense, as the controllers of the mini consoles have the same connectors, the same as the wii classic controller as well (which I've used to play NES mini multiplayer games before the SNES mini arrived).

Off topic but 10 years ago my buddy got a LCD screen in his civic. You pushed a button and it came out vertically then rotated. Got stolen twice. We played Goldeneye on it with a legit 64.

Actually there are lots of ways to play super mario all-stars via hdmi legit. av to to hdmi adapters. When I was younger I had a convoluted setup to playing games in the car. black and white tv crt small tv, av to snes, car inverters... while convoluted it worked until we hit a bump; then on some games it was back to level 1... those were the days

You know it's possible to simulate screen images, right? Most likely, they're just holding controllers and pretending to play while the footage was added in post without realizing that it wasn't on the SNES Mini by default (or just not caring).

Reminds me of a commercial for some RC toy with a camera where a boy spies on his mom playing New Super Mario Bros.--specifically, the DS game--on the TV, with a Wii Remote in her hand.

Doubt Honda used a character as iconic as Mario without Nintendo's Australia arms permission.

It could be stock video footage they'd were sent to run on the HDMI and a couple of left over prop controllers.
