Pokémon GO is having a Community Day this weekend, focusing on the super-adorable Squirtle as the mascot of choice, and Niantic has confirmed that a rather special variant on everyone's favourite starter water turtle will be included.

As a nice little reference to the original season of the Pokémon anime, a sunglasses-wearing Squirtle will become available in the game. For those not in the know, the Squirtle Squad (loving pictured above) is a mischievous group of Squirtle who cause all sorts of mayhem and madness for Ash and his friends in an early episode of the TV show. The leader of the group (in the pointy shades) eventually joins Ash as a Poké-partner, and has since become a much-loved character from the show.

This very special Squirtle will be made available through Research Tasks which can be completed during the Community Day, which will be taking place this Sunday, 8th July. Regular wild Squirtle will also spawn in greater numbers with a higher-than-usual chance of being shiny. Fans have been asking for a Squirtle Squad nod ever since the Pokémon was revealed as the mascot so it's nice to see Niantic play along.
