Nintendo has announced a new, worldwide Splatfest for Splatoon 2 to celebrate the game's one year anniversary - and this time it's a big one.
Yes, players must choose between Team Squid or Team Octopus in an ultimate showdown between the two primary playable sea-dwellers. Will you be sticking with the squids, who have been your trusty companions from day one, or will you be siding with the fresh new octopus-based Octolings?
Interestingly, if you choose Team Squid you will be playing as a regular Inkling, but if you choose Team Octopus you'll play as an Octoling - even if you haven't purchased the Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion.
The Splatfest will take place on 21st July (the day that Splatoon 2 was released last year) to 22nd July, with team registration starting much sooner. As mentioned above, this is a worldwide Splatfest so all regions will be taking part in the same event.
The question is obvious - which team will you be on? Let us know in the comments below.

Well, they're both delicious.
Octopus easily.
I predict 80% octopus
You guys want another Turf War? Because this is how Turf Wars Start!
Heha, nice. Despite the lack of hairstyles, Team Octoling for the win. ^^
I'll go Octoling, gotta support my girl Marina! ^_^
@chardir That means squid will win. The most popular option always attracts all the terrible players.
@BigKing But the popular option gets a 1-0 head start. Now I need to go look at the stats...
I’m jealous. Thanks to my game break I can’t play this one. 😂
Also, didn’t Mr. Nogami say that an Octo v Inkling Splatfest was “a good idea” when asked about it in an NL interview from E3? Thanks, NL! 😃
Octo for sure
Team squid, because Pearl!
I want to play as an Octoling on the Squid side. For the lawls.
Great Turf War 2!
Team Octopus, baby!
@BigKing Yes, but in order to play as Octoling, you need to have beaten the very difficult Octo Expansion, so the people who pick Octo have a slight advantage in that regard.
@StupidName64 That has nothing to do with the splatfest.
And the Octo Expansion isn't very difficult. It's mild at best. Ikaruga is very difficult.
@StupidName64 Actually what the article says is that even if you haven't purchased the OctoExpansion, you can play as an octoling, hence many will pick it just to see how octolings look like.
@StupidName64
Actually, they could have just skipped the missions too.
@MrJuancho That’s true, though there will still probably be a lot of people with the Octo Expansion that pick Octoling in the Splatfest (though, as @Shard1 mentioned, they could have just skipped everything).
Born a Kid, Dye a Squid.
Disgusting octoscum
Team Squid!
Team Squid. Because the popular choice always loses and most people will choose octopus in an attempt to be cool and edgy.
Squid. They're the original that's been there since the series started.
@Heavyarms55 That'd be hilarious but won't happen. For this splatfest all Team Squid members will forced to become Inklings, and Team Octopus become Octolings (during a match). You'll revert to whoever you were once you exit the lobby.
Ok but why 'Squid vs. Octopus' instead of 'Inkling vs. Octoling'?
Inkling. I mean isn’t the entire franchise based on squid kids? They’re the originals.....Squid Sisters, Pearl...c’mon now. Yes, the octolings are adorable looking but do they have “woomy”? Jk....but I do like the inkling callouts better.
I'm going for Team Octopus. They're my favorite marine animal.
Added to my calendar. Missed the last Splatfest and I really enjoy them so glad I won't be missing out this time.
IIRC, ain't octopi the more eerily intelligent of the two modern species? I'd err on their capacities. My apologinks, Squid Girl.
Team tako!
Turning up the heat, I see how it is
Team Squid!
You can't spell Kinky without Ink
Team squid all the way! Born a squid, dye a squid!
Team Octo!
