We're in the middle of a Summer heatwave and it's been an amazing year for the Nintendo Switch so far. June saw the release of Mario Tennis Aces, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy. It's all hotting up now!
So, what's on the horizon for Nintendo Switch fans, then? We've compiled a list of all the good stuff coming out at retail in July and August, so feast your eyes and prepare your wallets.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker - 13th July
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, which originally launched for Wii U, is coming to Nintendo Switch. This version includes exciting miniature courses based on various Kingdoms in the Super Mario Odyssey game. Also, anyone can play with a friend or family member by sharing a pair of Joy-Con controllers. While one player controls Captain Toad, the other can assist with things like turnip cover fire. If you missed this the first time around, don't make that mistake again.
Octopath Traveler - 13th July
Eight travelers. Eight adventures. Eight roles to play in a new world brought to life by Square Enix. Explore each traveler's story and use their abilities in and out of battle. Will you expand your horizons as the Merchant or track down a traitor as the Warrior? Where will you go? Who will join you? You alone can choose your path.
Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate - 28th August
Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate is the follow-up to Monster Hunter Generations, and marks the Monster Hunter series' debut on Nintendo Switch as an exclusive. Hunters can face off against the largest roster of unique monsters in any Monster Hunter game to date. Players take on the role of a brave hunter challenging larger than life beasts that yield valuable resources used for crafting unique weapons and equipment. Sure it might not be as fancy-looking as Monster Hunter: World, but it's as close as you're going to get on the Switch right now.
More Awesome Nintendo Switch Games
Other than Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Octopath Traveler and Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate there are lots more Switch retail games which might take your fancy in July and beyond.
Awesome Accessories For Your Switch

code of princess and maybe monster hunter only 2 here that interest me unless dark souls remastered release is announced.
A handful of great games
Flashback and Tennis are already out.
Sonic Mania plus for me. The are others I'm interested in but will get those later.
@Stocksy Thank you, I was just about to bring this up. Did they do any checking before making this article live?
It’s not on this list and I can’t seem to see it anywhere now but does anybody know when trailblazers is out ? I thought it was June but that’s been and gone now any help ?
Currently I’m good with the slow drip feed of new games for my Switch. I bought Little Nightmares, Mario Tennis, and Ys VIII on cart and will get Octopath, but with a little restraint and observation I’ve picked up some great indies on the eshop on sale that I’ve been keeping an eye on like Owlboy, Steamworld Heist, Sexy Brutale and Golf Story. I even got I am Setsuna for £15 to sit on my Switch for a rainy day.
If I haven’t played it- it’s a new game.
@Stocksy 25th Anniversary Edition.
@Stocksy if you actually check the links, these are for the US releases
@HobbitGamer yeah I already have it with steelbook case. £27 I got it for. Not played it yet but special edition is lovely
@adh56 ah ok.
@Tsurii man I hate that!!! In ten years time when Nintendo won’t let us download from switch anymore these games are lost forever. Something amazing about my n64 and all the carts just working as they did all those years ago.
Gonna buy : (July - December 2018)
1. Yonder the Cloud Catcher Chronicles
2. Go Vacation
3. Overcooked 2
4. Nintendo LABO Toy Con 01
5. Little Dragons Cafe
6. Super Mario Party
7. Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu
8. Penguin Wars
9. Crash Bandicoot N'Sane Trilogy
Aren't Okami HD, Hyper Light Drifter and The Messenger supposed to come out in this quarter too? I was really hoping to play at least one of these games during my vacation this month. Guess that's not gonna happen.
@Vriess
This is a list of physical releases only. Maybe that's why.
Octopath traveler only for me...
Cannot wait to play it !
@Vriess Okami HD is out in August. Game of the summer, and they miss it off <Facepalm>
"More awesome Switch games"
It seems just being a Switch game is enough to be classed as "awesome". Hello Neighbour for £40 is anything but awesome!
If only Neil deGrasse Tyson read this!
Looking forward to dead cells.
@Stocksy @Tsurii : If it's any consolation, the X collections are being issued separate retail releases in Japan along with a double pack. The double pack contains a code for Collection 2, but the separate retail edition contains a cartridge, and the cartridge will be identical to the international release (with English and other languages included).
Happy to see that official charging stand. I think I’ll be picking one of those up, although it doesn’t seem to be on my local amazon as yet.
Just Captain Toad, Sonic Mania Plus is tempting but given the DLC upgrade is only $5 I'll probably just get the upgrade.
Considering the only reason I bought a Switch was for the Mario and Rabbids Kingdom Battle game there are a ton of new games I'm looking forward to.My Ps4 I admit is starting to get pushed aside by this device.
Looking forward to:
Octopath Traveller,Shining Resonance Refrain,Sonic Mania,Valkyrie Chronicles 4,Flipping Death,Torna Golden Country,Little Dragons Cafe and maybe Captain Toad...the demo wasn't as great as I was hoping.
"We're in the middle of a Summer heatwave and it's been an amazing year for the Nintendo Switch so far."
Uhh, has it? The second half of the year could be okay, the first half was completely forgettable.
@RadioHedgeFund It's because it's not getting a physical release in the West, so they can't make any money from affiliated Amazon links for it.
Pre-ordered Mega Man X 1+2 but I'll only receive it by the end of August, probably... For the rest of the year, I plan to pick Mega Man 11, Smash Bros, both physical, and three or four indies digitally. I want other games too, like Captain Toad, but they'll depend on my tight budget getting better....
Not one thing of interest on the horizon for me... I was really hoping for an announcement or two at E3 that would give me something to look forward... Smash coming to Switch is great and all, and I'm sure I will get it, but I will only play it occasionally when fiends are over. I guess Mario Party is exciting, if they finally get it right.
For now, Yoku's Island Express has been entertaining me and I will eventually try to become decent at Mario Tennis again (I was ok in the Gameube era).
For the rest of the Summer... I will probably finally get back to Odyssey and Kingdom Battle.
Not the best summer ever but some titles are tempting, Xeno 2 DLC for sure, also Valkyria Chronicles 4. Wasn't impressed by the Octopath's demo so will wait for some reviews.
I am so flippin' excited about Mega Man X Legacy Collection! X -X4 are my favorite, and I can't wait to finally try X8!
My God, there's so much to catch up on! I don't think I'll even get Captain Toad nor Mega Man X until later in the year because I've got Crash Bandicoot and some indies to play before then!
Just getting Sonic Mania Plus and Monster Hunter Generations for July and August. Have a trip coming up with my daughter to my sister’s bridal shower at the end of July, then August is back to school stuff so not a lot of free money for games.
I’ll get Octopath Traveler, Sonic Mania, Runbow Deluxe, and likely the Xenoblade DLC this summer. I also would like to try Monster Hunter, Okami, Valkyria Chronicles, and the Mega Man X Collection. A good set of games for the rest of the year.
@holygeez03
"but I will only play it occasionally when fiends are over".
I have the same problem... my house is always full of fiends. Let me know if you find a way to resolve it!
If NL is going to put Pokemon on the July-August list it might as well go ahead and add in SSBU at the end as well, what's 3 more weeks?
Very possible I'm not getting any of these ever, though I'll get the XC2 season pass when I finally decide to get XC2.
I need to start making my own lists like this, called:
"Games that came out a year ago that are complete and half price now."
I recently purchased Mario v Rabbids Gold for Switch and TW3 and NNK2 on PS4. NNK2 isn't nearly complete yet but it was half price just 3 months after release.
This retail list is making me think I really should buy Mushroom Wars 2 on Thursday so my Switch has something to do after MvR other than Labo all summer.
As a Wii U owner Nintendo is doing a really good job this year of making me regret my Switch purchase. Not enough to trade it in, I know the games will come, but we probably should have waited until New Switch. Oh well, it was a good Christmas gift.
Octopath Traveler and Dead Cells for me.
Moonlighter looked promising but the reviews so far have been mediocre at best, unfortunately.
Valkyria Chronicles 4 looks promising, but I don't know, I might end up getting it on another platform - which would be significantly cheaper in the end. It'll depend on how much of a step down (if any) it is compared to competing versions and whether I have demand for another portable title by then.
Other than that, I'm patiently waiting for Fire Emblem here! While - for my personal taste - the release list for the rest of the year seems rather barren, I'm not really that bothered by it.
I'm looking at Spider-Man and Red Dead Redemption later this year as absolute essential purchases, so I would not have much room for anything else anyways, plus there is Life is Strange 2 and FH4 as well. Hell, I might actually for the first time since Black Flag be really interested in a (second ^^) AC game, aka Odyssey - looked really promising during E3 and it's definitely the right setting for me.
In other words, I'm okay with Nintendo doing a Pokemon-SSB-themed holidays showing - neither games I really care about - since it's still going to be one hell of an amazing release season anyways!
There are 4 "must have" games here for me, and then the dropoff is pretty steep. Still...for a 2 month period thats great.
Lots of heavy hitters in there but few I'm actually interested in. Hopefully Hyper Light Drifter and World Ends With You sneak in there somehwere as well as Dark Souls.
SO many anime games.
I must be getting old because the only things I’m looking forward to are Smash and Okami. It’s been a barren year for first-party releases.
Shining Resonance
Monster Hunter
Mega Man x
Code o Princess
Octopath Traveler
Blade Strangers
Valkyrie Chronicles
@Eef
And where do you think your food comes from that you buy at the store?
Someone kills the things you eat.
octopath, pkmn, dark souls, mario party, disgaea refine, twewy, smash and tales of vesperia i'll be all buying
2nd half is jam packed with great games, not even mentioned games i aint buying.
ugh poor wallets
@Ooyah my house is full of White Gloves
If I can hold off buying Wolfenstein 2 for awhile, I’ll be able to afford Okami HD and several others this summer. I need to play my backlog of Switch and 3DS games this summer before some of these games come out
Shining Resonance Refrain
Octopath Traveler
Captain Toad
Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate
and depending on reviews Overcooked 2
Monster Hunter and the 2 SNK games on there. Maybe Code of Princess Ex. I still need to get that Mario Tennis game. Then I’ll buy a few more Neo Geo games and then Smash in December. That will be all the Switch games for me this year.
Guys, you missed Tanzia in July 19th
Captain toad and possibly go vacation
it would be nice if dedicated amazon.com links would be included in these lists.
the links are always dead for me because amazon only sells (e-)books here.
Where is Okami being released physically?
So many games. I’m gonna get smash ultimate
So far, the end of my year will have: Pokemon Let's Go, Monster Hunter, and Xenoblade. I'm iffy on Smash, but this year's shaping up pretty well regardless.
Hmm... Still dwelling on getting the ce off Valkyrie Chronicles.
Also.
>Awesome Accessories For Your Switch
>Nintendo Classic Mini Famicom Shonen Jump Version
How do I use that accessory with my Switch?
Cya
Raziel-chan
Octopath Traveller and Valkyria Chronicles are the only games I'm picking up for the rest of the year unless a Direct shakes things up.
Octopath Traveler and Adventure Time for me this month 😀
Octopath Traveler, Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, and maybe Captain Toad Treasure Tracker.
Monster hunter.....but getting worried the UK might not be getting a hardcopy just EShop version.
Okami and Splatoon Octo expansion for august. Moonlighter looks neat, but I want to finish a couple of other smaller ones and maybe get Hollow Knight first.
I see a lot of shovelware type games on this list.
Can't wait to get my hands on Shining Resonance Refrain, Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk, Octopath Traveler, and Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate.
Might get Touhou Genso: Wanderer Reloaded, not too sure though, going to have to see more gameplay before I make my decision.
I’ll be grabbing Capt Toad for myself and Hello Neighbor plus Go Vacation for my kids
Octopath is already pre-ordered and paid for months ago. Captain Toad maybe.
@rjejr
Dude, got my GPD Win 2 handheld finally. Move over Switch, this just became my favorite handheld device of all time! Well, maybe they're tied. Switch is pretty awesome after all and has tons of fantastic games and all of them can be played on the TV or handheld or tabletop, split joy con with motion in all of that awesome jazz.
But the Win 2? Oh my gosh. Every PS2 game is running at 720p flawlessly. Every PSP game, 720p flawlessly. Every GameCube game at 720p flawlessly. Every Wii game at 720p flawlessly. Running Fire Emblem on GBA, even has bilinier filtering which smooths out the jaggies, SNES, N64... it does it all! And every single one of them has save states and loads.
And it also runs most of my Steam library at 720p! Dragons Dogma, Assassins Creed 4, Alan Wake, Portal 1/2, Half Life 2, Ori and the Blind Forest, Wolfenstein The New Order, DOOM, Wolfenstein 2, Fallout 3 and New Vegas, X-COM, Rayman Origins, Batman Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, Bioshock Infinite, Burnout Paradise, Dark Souls 1, 2 and 3, Darksiders 1 and 2, DMC, Far Cry 3 (maybe 4? haven't tried), Final Fantasy XIII-1, 2 and 3, Ni No Kuni 2, Metal Gear Rising Revengeance, Resident Evil 4, Sonic All Stars Racing, Tales of Symphonia HD, Tales of Zesteria and Berseria, Valkyria Chronicles, Ultra Street Fighter 4, World of Final Fantasy...
It does it all. DOOM and Wolf 2 need 540p, but aside from that it's all 720p.
I'm so in love with this thing. And I have a special case for my Switch, that has a small compartment underneath where the switch seats that is the exact size of GPD Win 2, so I can carry them both in the same super slim case, and they both take USB-C so they share the same charger!
Gonna try and see if it'll run Rise of the Tomb Raider next. I actually have a lot more games but there's only so much space on the device so I have to prioritize which ones I want most. And a lot of the super demanding games are automatic no's, as well as any Wii game that relied on motion too much, like Skyward Sword and Dragon Quest Swords and Metroid Prime 3. And any game I have on Switch I'm not gonna install on the Win 2. Plus games like Final Fantasy X and XII, those are 80gb combined on STEAM, and I can just emulate at 720p with save states instead and take up way less space. So that helps trim it down.
But I bought a 512gb SSD and swapped out as soon as I got it, plugged in a 400gb microSD and use the combined space for almost 1TB of steam games, and have a tiny, super stubby, small profile 256gb Cruzer Fit USB drive for all my roms.
Anyone hear anything good about the Victor Vran game? The Motörhead logo caught my eye, but I’m not familiar with this game.
@JaxonH You should get paid to do an infomercial for that thing. "But wait.. there's more!!"
Glad to see you so happy, when I saw what article this was in on the email I was expecting to take a beating, so thanks for skipping over my negativity.
I started NNK2 last night. My family and I are enjoying it - my son voices Roland and Evan, my wife all the woman parts, my other son the higelys and I do random other people. It's like the gaming version of Mystery Science Theater 2000. And Mario v Rabbids is going fairly well. Mostly we've been watching a lot of tv though.
Keep on keeping on and enjoy your new toy.
No Titan Quest?
Goodness I am going to never have money am I?
@Eef There are no words for how incredibly disconnected humans are when it comes to other species we should be sharing this planet with.
@Gold_Ranger You may see food, you may even convince yourself that somewhere between being forced into life only to be forced inside a slaughterhouse and exiting dead and all cut up for consumption, something magically "humane" happens,...
I see cruelty, systematic mass murder, and corpses as product.
@HobbitGamer Erm, i got the 25th Aniversary back on the 20th June
@JaxonH too expensive though ! I have a GPD Win 1 and would love the 2 but the price is stupid for the specs. There are Win10 tabs with identical specs for 50% of the price ! Anyway just a note, be wary of the sandisk fit range, some of them run super hot and I mean too hot to touch hot. Good luck with it anyway, I’ll probably get one when there’s a price drop.
Octopath Traveler and Captain Toad arriving just before my holidays and Valkyria Chronicles 4 in September (but it'll wait until I am done with Torna)
@Eef I very much am against hunting and don't really have a true stand on games like these but if everyone who does hunt, plays this game instead then I'll be happy lol.
@Bunkerneath It’s later for NA region this time . That’s just not mentioned, unless you see where the link goes.
@Shambo
Still tastes good!
Just inject Octopath Traveler directly into my veins.
Octopath, Shining Resonance, Monster Hunter GU, Blade Strangers, Code of Princess, SNK Heroines... And my kids want Go Vacation. My poor wallet.
@Gold_Ranger and slaves still make work a lot easier. But it still is degrading another's life to a resource with no consideration for them, whether in life or in death.
IF we as a species are supposed to be "above" other species (whatever that may mean), on what ground then, if we have no compassion, and compare ourselves to the cruelest of them when justifying our injustice?
Besides, let's be honest here: you wouldn't like it raw and fresh without spices, which is the only "natural" way for predators. As vultures we'd eat flesh decomposing, and if that sounds healthy or tasty to you, by all means go eat some road kill. It's the spices that taste good, not the corpse. Definitely not worth killing for. Humans can hardly digest raw muscle tissue, and raw guts are naturally disgusting. There's also the fact that mentally sane humans would be put off by the idea of harming a defenseless, innocent animal, and the physically most healthy cultures mostly live on a -largely, at the very least- whole food, plant-based diet. While "we" here eat corpses and are sucklings of cows, and act surprised when we get the diseases related to it.
What is happening with Dark Souls Remastered? Said May 25, then summer, now not even on this list? Waiting slightly impatiently for this one.
@Shambo
Eh, slavery needs to make a comeback.
Too many uppity sub-species out there.
No mention of Titan Quest which is out late July?
For me it will be Octopath, Captain Toad, Little Dragons Cafe, Flipping Death, Moonlighter, and the Torna DLC - so many games, so little time!
Taiko Drum Master also comes out this month in Japan.
It'll have an English patch too, and the Switch is region-free, so it is easily import-friendly, and a must have for any rhythm game fan.
