Following phenomenal first-quarter financial results – including a 185 percent year-over-year increase in sales – headset manufacturer Turtle Beach confirmed today that they have the largest-ever lineup of Battle Royale-ready headsets available for Fortnite on Nintendo Switch.
The collection now includes 25 different headsets that are compatible with the system – and because Fortnite has its own in-game voice chat functionality on the Switch, this replaces the need for players to use Nintendo’s mobile voice chat app to communicate with their squad.
According to Juergen Stark, CEO of Turtle Beach, Epic Games’ inclusion of their own chat system in-game "opens the doors for developers of future online multiplayer titles coming to Nintendo Switch to follow their lead and implement in-game chat systems, which is great news overall for Nintendo, for Turtle Beach, and most importantly…for gamers."
Alongside their current headset models, Turtle Beach also announced two other new products at E3 this year: the Recon 200 and Stealth 300 headsets, both optimized for Battle Royale gaming on Switch, specifically with Fortnite. The headsets reportedly have powerful amplified game audio, crystal-clear chat, and numerous other features. Stealth 300 will be available for purchase beginning in July, and Recon 200 hits shelves this fall. To see all of the Switch-compatible headsets currently available from Turtle Beach, click here.

It's a tough choice for developers thinking of implementing voice chat going forward.
Do they go with the traditional method of native voice chat or do they use the separate mobile app that requires a special headset and a group of Switch friends also with a special headset?
Just glad it's not me having to make that decision.
.
I'm on a hunt for headsets right now. My old Turtle Beach Wii U headset started acting up recently, so I bought a Sennheiser Game One headset, but it sounded too muddy to me (even though other people gave it a lot of good reviews). It also sounded much less clearer than my old headset, so I'm thinking about buying a headset from Turtle Beach again.
How can I understand "optimized for Battle Royale gaming on Switch"? How to optimize a head set for battle royal? Is there any special requirement for the hardware that battle royal has and other online shooters not? Smart me up!
It is ridiculous how sound is such a big part of being successful at this game. I have lost count on how many fellow Switch owners I have bested simply by being quiet and listening to their footsteps.
Even more ridiculous and anachronistic is how Nintendo launched a 320 $ console/handheld hybrid at 2017 without a mic and thought they could get away with it
I've been using the Recon 50X for all my gaming for a while, including Twitch streams. They didn't make those to be "compatible" with the Switch, they naturally were from the beginning since the system itself had that jack on it all along but which just wasn't used for its microphone capabilities.
According to a tweet from former head of Sony Online Entertainment, Joe Smedley, in a bit about the Sony-Fortnite online controversy:
"btw when I was at Sony, the stated reason internally for this was money.
They didn't like someone buying something on an Xbox and it being used
on a Playstation. simple as that. dumb reason, but there it is."
Pretty lame Sony.
Ah yes, special headsets compatible with the a switch. And this rare feat was achieved by... Simply using the most bog-standard 4-line mini Jack, used by pretty much any phones with mini jack sockets.

@OorWullie it seems like a no brainer to me to do it all in game and in system, unless the games intended to only ever be played with known friends and even then I’d suggest in game is more flexible and will accomodate more users.
Headsets with a line in are readily available where a lot of Nintendo’s market won’t own a smartphone. For anything with a public lobby it’s also much more convinient. I’m shocked the Switch supported line in actually after Nintendo didn’t use it with their own implementation.
People can use other mobile apps anyway if they want to chat over a seperate mobile device.
Edit: if you read the following, amusingly enough it seems as though Turtle Beach was caught off guard by the recent developments. https://www.turtlebeach.com/pages/nintendo-switch
@Shiryu They did get away with it. Look at the sales. It's been a success so far! There is only fortnite and splatoon 2 using voice chat so clearly it's not that important...
I play both and don't use the chat for either. I mute everyone I play with on Fortnite as the constant noise takes away the noise from footsteps and gunfire which gave away enemy positions. I don't want to listen to some moron firing his gun in the air shouting 'I'm taliban!' every 5 seconds....
@Smigit I was trying to be sarcastic with my comment. The simple way or Nintendo's clunky way? As you say, it's a no brainer!
I say Genki. A Kickstarter project.
@Allgonewrong eh? Was that one a miss reply?
@OorWullie whoosh. Went right over my head. Haha
Can i use my Sony PlayStation Gaming Headphones to chat on the Switch? Would they work if I connected them via the headphone jack?
Help pls?
If I wanted to hear fifth-graders swear at me in high-def audio, I'd become a substitute teacher.
@OorWullie don't worry I picked up on and appreciated the sarcasm!
@Joco84 I literally went out and purchased a Playstation Gold Headset for Fortnite on the switch this last weekend. It works perfectly!
This was a decent article I found that shows most of the compatible headsets up to this point.

@mazzel A big part of it is the sound quality and clarity - including large speakers & high-sensitivity mics. Those things have a huge impact on your ability to win in Battle Royale games.
@OorWullie the special chat headset isn't required, it's just one option
In fact the app is actually good for one thing, most people have a phone, while not everyone has a headset, so people without a headset can use the app
Now Nintendo just needs to support it with all online games, which is expected to start in sep.
All well and good if you like voice chat but I still just want Bluetooth enabled for wireless headsets 😕
@mossimac
Cheers for the response, will give a go when the wife isnt around!
What someone (turtle beach if your listening) needs to do is make a wireless USB headset which can blend a bluetooth audio as well.
Wireless usb for native
Wireless Bluetooth blended with native for the app or discord.
Problem solved for both styles!
@TaxNL genki does not offer chat
Now we just need to convince capcom to add native chat and video capture to MHGU
The UK Turtle Beach website has nothing relating to Nintendo Switch.
I would like to buy a decent head set but it would need to be wireless be that with a bluetooth dongle in the audio jack or Bluetooth direct to the Switch or via USB.
It will need to work in both docked and portable mode and it needs to support chat and audio.
Trouble is there’s so many about that knowing what ones will and won’t work is a gamble. @NintendoLife could do an article covering the top 10 compatible headsets for UK and USA.
Would make the choice easier.
It’s so hard to choose a decent headset. The Sennheiser one I bought was one of the best headsets according to a popular Swedish website, but it sounded like crap when I tried it. Sure, I got my money back, but the headphone market is still very confusing, in my opinion. I’m glad that I finally found a seemingly good headset that I’m planning on buying soon (the Turtle Beach Recon 320).
@Lord
Still a chance it will support voice chat.
Got this from their website:
" Since this kind of happened suddenly, we're happy to say we have the hardware specs that can support it, now the next step is to figure out if we can (and how Nintendo) handles USB audio in. We'll keep you posted on this!
Last updated: Fri, June 15 2018 11:13 AM CEST"
Turtle Beach headsets are trash, people get drawn in because of the "gamer" tag, but not only does the audio quality suck, so does the build quality, overpriced trash.
@mazzel well, it is the type of headset that... oks, you got me!!! Must be MAGIC then, how strange. 🤣
@austin_voigt but it will not help in other online games, where actually muddy and unclear sound paired with bad mic quality gives you a huge advantage!?
@Francema
Looks like some people still believe all the marketing!
Surely it must be clear to Nintendo that it has to abandon its ridiculous app for voice chat and simply put it on the Switch where it should have been in the first place. Otherwise in a couple of years we'll have a situation where people will be happily chatting in third party games whilst Nintendo titles are virtually silent as nobody bothered to buy the silly adapters for mixed audio or indeed download the app
@Hughesy What headsets aren’t trash, then? I’ve been using a Turtle Beach headset for a long time, and I personally haven’t had any problems with the sound quality.
@G-Boy That's only because you haven't tried high end audio equipment, or even mid tier which cost less than Turtle Beach but have better quality. It's like Beats headphones, they are overpriced compared to the audio quality they offer.
If they were half the price they currently are they wouldn't be so bad, but with "Gamer" applied they are too much for what they offer.
There are some good headsets from lower end to high end, Corsair Void, astro A40s and A50s, Steelseries Arctis Pro+ gaming dac to name a few.
I've tried 6 different Turtle Beach headsets and they all had terrible audio quality vs the price they cost.
They're trying to make it sound like their products are something special.
They're just headsets, people, it's all just marketing blah-blah.
@mazzel 🤣
@mazzel Yeah no - you’re totally right. I think their thought is that it might be more advantageous for these types of games, but who knows. I don’t design the headsets, I just write about them 😂
@austin_voigt I actually should try one before judging them... Just my past experience with headphones/head sets showed, that it actually makes little difference... When I started with online gaming, I used my Walkman headphones plus an additional microphone and guess what, it worked
But maybe todays ears are more sensitive
@mazzel It’s these damn kids and their rock & roll, they’ve blown their eardrums out (in my case, literally - I neglected to wear earplugs in the snake pit at a Metallica concert)...
@austin_voigt I did this several times already, not only at Metallica also during our own rehearsals, we sometimes "forgot" to wear ear plugs... Or during our gigs... But I got more sensitive on that topic! Quite lucky my ears are still fine (beside some low level tinnitus )
