It was only a couple of weeks ago that we were treated to the shock announcement of a new WarioWare - WarioWare Gold, to be precise - and on 3DS no less. But if a slew of recent trademarks filed by Nintendo are anything to go by, a new Wario Land could well be in the works.
Nine trademarks were filed in total, including Dillon’s Dead-Heat Breakers, Luigi’s Mansion, Mario & Luigi, Metroid, Metroid Prime, Smash Bros., WarioWare, and a little title simply called 'Wario Land'. This is the second trademark for Wario Land in the last year, and with WarioWare Gold opting to hit 3DS this year, a new Wario title on Switch seems the likely next port of call.
But what do you guys make of all these trademarks? Is Nintendo just covering the bases, or are we really getting another round of Wario platforming? Share your thoughts below...

Simply, yes.
That would be nice! Wario Land games have always been good fun. Shake It was really nice with the hand drawn animations as well, I wonder what kind of art style they'll go with this time if a new game really does come around.
Please don't be a 3D side scroller, please don't be a 3D side scroller, please don't be a 3D side scroller.
Wario Land Shake It was freaking beautiful. I want something like that except in HD.
The only good Wario Land games were those on the Gameboy and Virtual Boy.
Yes, please!
I would also love to see a new Wario franchise/series (in addition to WarioWare and Wario Land), where Nintendo take their existing games and turn them into Wario games. Super Wario Odyssey, The Legend of Ashley: Fart of the Beguiled, etc.
Yes please, the status effect platforming in WL4 was awesome. Hurry up Nintendo!
Oh god yes, Wario Games on GB were the real deal. Platforming at its finest!
Wario needs more love, and make it side scrolling! And for heavens sake, make Waluigi player 2 or something.
Yes, yes yes!
Wario: Get Ready for some real greed!
Meh... never been a fan of the guy nor his games.
Wario ??
Always have loved the Wario Land games, and 3 is one of my favorite games of all time. 4 & VB Wario Land get honorable mentions too!
Make it so, Nintendo!
@BigKing I’d argue that the Wii one was good too. But that’s just my opinion.
Loved the first one on the Game Boy. Wario deserves better than minigame collections and cameos in other games. Hope he gets a full 3D platformer.
About time we got a new Wario Land. If it came to Switch all my platforming needs (Mario, Wario, DK and Crash) would be covered on a single console.
Glad to see they've not forgotten about Wario Land, it has been far too long since its last installment on the Wii.
I really do hope this trademark is foreshadowing an entirely new game, and please Nintendo, don't hand this project off to some c-list developer like Arzest.
Good, the world needs a reintroduction to Nintendo's sassy pirate before we bring her to Smash. Or vice versa
Wario Land! One of Nintendo's best (and most underrated) series. Hope it's true!
@SuperTeeter64 Yes, Shake It! was awesome. One of the better installments, even.
Warioware and land on Switch pretty please.
Yes,please!
Wario Land 3 was wonderful, same with Master of Disguise (which was basically a Wario Land game imo). Still have to get Shake It! though. I purchased it once used and the disc didn't work...
Wario Land 4 port for Switch.
@JohnnyC he got that on Gamecube, not his finest hour in truth I think he works best in 2D and it gives him his own domain while Mario's off being 3D (let me believe the New Super Mario Bros series is over let me dream...)
I’ve never played a WL game, but they sound really fun. I love the paper Mario franchise and the yarn look of Kirby and Yoshi. I’d love either of those or something similar. I want to see every Nintendo property in something similar to those hobby/craft-style games.
I've actually been replaying Wario Land 4 on my old GBA recently I loved that game, and all previous games, always felt like due to his lesser popularity Nintendo used him as a testing ground, Wario 2 couldn't die, Wario 3 had the weird adventure where you had to revisit locations and so on, 4 had the awesome 'get to the end of the level then sprint back' thing. The New Super Mario Bros series scratched the 2D platformer itch but offered nothing innovative like Wario did, it never felt like a risk taker, so I'd rather see him reprise the role as Nintendo's 2D Platformer front-runner again personally
so they filed for metroid and metroid prime?
thats something that caught my eye tbh
I hope it's true.
Warioland for Switch and not for 3ds plz.
I having a feeling sometimes trademark filing are just to keep them trademarked
@BigKing wario land shake it on Wii..
Waluigi land?!?!? A Waluigi game at last!
Oh wait it's Wario... no worries
@SuperTeeter64 The Wii one felt low budget and gimmicky.
Wario Ware Smooth Moves was amazing though
It'll be interesting to see how Nintendo handles Wario Land after a decade of absence. It woulf be nice to get another hand-drawn Wario Land game but the last one was pretty expensive to make due to those same animations (plus it was done by production ig which most likely wasn't cheap)
about time!
Also would love Wario World 2.
@BigKing Low budget? Even though it had a fun unique anime art style? lol Whatever you say.
@Timbojay A great 3D game will always be better than a great 2d game though (eg Breath of the Wild and Mario Galaxy may have been very good indeed in 2D,but not as good as they were in 3D). Nintendo need to put their hands in their pockets if they want to make the most of some of their characters as the decision to make most games in 2d is at least in part down to cost-cutting, fighting games notwithstanding.
3D Platformer or bust
I really hope they use hand drawn 2d graphics like in Shake on Wii again.
@ValhallaOutcast Logic isn't allowed here.
@ValhallaOutcast Probably. For what it's worth, having this trademarked with a bunch of games either getting or having had new entries gives the idea that it can happen, but it could have just happened when they were trademarking everything else.
I was gutted warioware gold wasn't announced for switch. Love those mini games Mayhem!
Waluigi in a Wario Game.
I'm definitely on board if a new Wario Land game is coming. I've played the whole series minus VB Wario Land and Wario Land 4 and have enjoyed each installment. Wario Land II is currently my favorite.
That Metroid Prime trademark is also interesting. I wonder if Prime 4 will make an appearance at E3?
OMG
Im hoping on WarioLand for Switch
Hell yes. Wario Land 3 is one of my favourite GBC games, would love more from this series.
Wario is my favourite Nintendo character, hands down, and a new Wario Land game would be a dream come true! While Shake It's hand-drawn art style was gorgeous, I wasn't a big fan of the gameplay. Here's hoping a return to the gameplay of Wario Land 2 and 3: using powers that Wario gets from being attacked to solve puzzles and immortality so that you can explore and experiment at your own leisure.
Yes! Less Kirby platformers and give Wario some more platforming love!
Wario Land: Shake It 2 please?!
Hell yeah, so the rumors were true!
Well I'm guessing it will be a 2D platformer. Wario World on the Gamecube was ok but his games are much better in 2D.
I would imagine later down the line Nintendo will release a WarioWare game on Switch to make use of the joy cons.
It's about time! Fix the stinker that was Shake It on Wii.
@LUIGITORNADO Agreed, a 2D Wario Land game would look beautiful on the Switch. I'd also love to them experiment and make it a 3D platformer... but after Wario World that might not be too great of an idea haha.
I’ve been asking for Wario World 2 for years. Wario land is also very welcomed. Wario!
Another Wario Land 3 would make me so happy!
@Baker1000 Shake it was an outstanding game with an awesome art style. Easily my favourite Good Feel and Wario game, although i haven't played all the Wario games including the well loved 4 .
@MH4 Isn't Good Feel working on Yoshi? If so i doubt it but you never know.
@TheBigK That's a big part of the gameplay in Shake it too.
Wario Land 6, on the Switch.
Please.
@Kevlar44 I'm not sure who's working on Yoshi.
Nintendo better start talking about Yoshi, and fast, too. Summer's coming in, dare I say, hot!
I'd settle for Shake It! HD tbh
This would be awesome. Wario needs to rise from the ashes and collect treasure once again! It's been a full decade at this point.
I would much prefer a WarioLand title to the somewhat crude middle school humor of the WarioWare series. I like the idea of Wario being like Mario, but greedy. He isn't in it to save anyone, or to take over the world, Wario is just in it for the money.
🤞
@JohnnyC I have to say I don't agree with the statement that 3D platformers are better than 2D. To me, that feels like saying 'A Cart Racer can't be as good as a Racing Sim', although they share components I'd consider them two very different beasts. You personally may prefer 3D platforming, nothing wrong with that, but I think to state that 2D platforming is inferior in general, and not just in your personal taste isn't a fair assessment. Oh and as for the cost cutting thing, I'd agree, Nintendo is going for cheaper options on Yoshi and Kirby, no doubt because they know they could throw a world of money at them and build epic 3D titles which takes 4 years to make...and have nothing to offer on the Switch in the near future, and wouldn't make their money back as the brand recognition and fan base for Yoshi and Kirby (and Wario) is nothing in comparison to Zelda and Mario
I have fantasized about Wario Land 3 being reimagined in a open world-esque 3d space.
@Timbojay Apologies if I was unclear (and reading back I can see I gave a different impression), but I don't believe there's a general rule that 3D is consistently better than 2D or vice versa. Rayman Legends is an excellent game and better than many other 3D titles. However it doesn't come close to the greatness of Mario Galaxy or Mario Odyssey. Many would also cite Super Metroid as a cast iron classic (and rightly so), but there's more cries for Metroid Prime 4 than for Super Metroid 2. While 2D titles can be very accomplished and among the best of any given year (Shovel Knight, Rayman Legends, Metroid II and Link Between Worlds being relatively recent examples of undeniable quality) they're just not on par with Nintendo's top-tier 3D titles. Also look at what the jump to 3D gave to other games on other platforms. When Nintendo makes a 2D game with one of their big-name IPs, I just feel like they're playing with one hand behind their back and not utilising all the tools available to them, and that had they chosen to spend a little more time and money they could have turned a very good game into a great game.
Please let it be true! A new Warioland is long overdue!
@JohnnyC I still can't agree. I consider Rayman Legends on par with Mario Odyssey, I consider Super Metroid on par with Metroid Prime, Sonic Mania is outstanding and a shining example of a platformer I feel reaches the level of greatness great 3D platformers reach (I'd put it on par with Mario Galaxy). I personally feel 3D games get more hype, partly because of a bigger budget, and partly because many people see 2D as outdated but personally I feel a 2D platformer is just as capable of greatness on the same level as a 3D one. Nintendo's big issue with 2D platformers recently isn't that they are 2D, it's that they keep trying to push 4 player co-op in them. I consider Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze one of the best platformers I've played in decades, I've put more time into it than Mario Odyssey and can't wait for the Switch release to go through again. The new Kirby looks like boring safe trash to me because it's so set on 4 player co-op (the same issue with the New Super Mario Bros) it's not doing anything exceptional. Look at 3D Land (was it land? the one one the WiiU), an ok 3D Platformer but good god did the 4 player co-op result in a highly neutered game.
One of the things I think we can both agree on though is '2D Platformers can/cant be AS great as 3D ones' is a highly subjective thing. Just like Kart Racers can/cant be as good as Racing Sims, it's very much down to personal preference. Your example of Rayman Legends is a good one for that, imagine the beautifully timed music chase levels...done in an open 3D world, it would be a horrible mess. Some things are better in one type of platformer over another type (Finding 800+ moons in a 2D Mario would be awful XD) so really when it comes to which one is greater at it's greatest, it's very much down to personal preference But yeah, I think Nintendo could still do some epic 2D platformers like Donkey Kong, but they need to drop this 4 player co-op stuff that is dulling down the endless potential of game design. (also a 4 player co-op Wario Platformer would be SO wrong considering he's a selfish money grabbing bastard haha)
Wario Wprld 2 woild be a dream come true. Same for a Wario Bros game featuring Waluigi
Wish they would just cut support for 3DS and focus entirely on the Switch. Nobody plays on that gimped little doublescreen handheld anymore.
