It seems like only this morning we were talking about how Switch system update 5.0.0 could be around the corner, and less than 24 hours later here we are - very much in the land of five-oh-oh.
The update has just gone live, so if you want to download it right now then head to the Switch settings menu, then scroll all the way down to "System" and select (you guessed it) "System Update".
Here's what's new, direct from Nintendo's mouth:
- Facebook and Twitter friends that also use Nintendo Switch can now be added through Friend Suggestions
- Friend suggestions are based on the Facebook and Twitter accounts you have linked to your Nintendo Account
- To view your friend suggestions, from the top left of the HOME Menu head to your User Page > Friend Suggestions
- You must be 13 or older to use this feature
- Select from 24 new ARMS and the Kirby series icons for your user
- To edit your user icon, head to your My Page on the top left of the Home Menu > Profile
- Digital software purchases made from a PC or smart device will start downloading sooner than previously, even if the Nintendo Switch console is in Sleep Mode
- Filter News to view only unread news or news from specific channels
- To keep the Parental Controls PIN private, the default method for PIN entry has been changed to entering using the Control Stick and buttons instead of the on-screen number pad
- When prompted to enter you Parental Controls PIN, press and hold the + Button to change between input methods
- Captured videos in the Album will be restricted by Parental Controls depending on the Restricted Software setting and Software Rating Organization
- Using the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app, add specific software titles to your whitelist to exclude them from the console’s Parental Controls Restricted Software setting
- Play-Time Limit restrictions will still apply even when the software title has been whitelisted.
- Receive notification when pre-purchased software is ready to play
- Nintendo Switch Pro Controller grip colors will now display in the Controllers menu
General system stability improvements to enhance the user's experience, including:
- Resolved an issue that caused Play Activity to display incorrectly in the Profile section of your User Page

It's okay that we didn't get themes, because we got what everybody really wanted...
stability
ARMS and Kirby but not Xenoblade? That's disappointing!
Pretty underwhelming for a full X.0 update. I'm appreciative just expect more for 5.0
Not really a whole lot interesting going on in that update. There's the usual Switch stabilisers.
The latest Wii U firmware by comparison is Version 5.5.2 and that was done last July.
It's finally here!
Not many of the things we wanted are included...backgrounds, folders etc.
However, if this works the way I hope it will:
"Filter News to view only unread news or news from specific channels"
It means I can finally stop the Japanese news feed from clogging up the news channel and that would be great!
Good to have more avatar options.I kind of expected it to include more than that with it being 5.0 but never mind progress is progress. I guess the big 6.0 update will be when the online service arrives in September.
Ninty failed us with no Xenoblade icons
heathens
Oh wow... Nintendo! I was joking this morning when I said only stability was gonna get in!
That's it?!
Sigh, are we really going to have to wait until the paid online service goes online in September before they'll give us save backups, new themes and the other things players are actually asking for? :[
But look at all those new paternal control options!
So Nintendo IS trying to make the Switch as stable as the 3DS.
When will we ever get folders and the ability to manage game icons?! I have a lot of games and it’s a damn hot mess! I’m not asking for the Earth here!
Ah, that good old Stability
Not a bad update overall, especially since the activity log is now being displayed correctly. The Facebook and Twitter integration is really handy too! Sure, underwhelming for a X.0 update, but it's overall good.
By the time we get all of the features that people really want we'll be at version 64.0...
Not a comment so far that its another irrelevant update with no virtual console. I guess Reggie and the boys are still working on that request for cloud saves?
Eh
bursts through ceiling
Did someone say ARMS icons?!
This is what I've been waiting for. I can't update right now, so someone please inform me if I can make my icon Lola Pop.
Hmm. Well then. That's underwhelming. This really should have been a 4.2... or even 4.1.1
Don't worry, folders arriving soon on version Wii U.0
Here's my two cents about icons:
Nintendo should make it an option for developers to make icons available as an extra bonus to buy a game, only available to tose who buy it (Ex.: If I have Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove, I could use Shovel Knight icons). That's something I've wanted since day one.
Aight, I'm reading this at 2AM while having work tomorrow, so at least I'm glad I can just go to sleep, without having to fire up my Switch & checking out all kinds of new stuff first.
Thanks for a lame update, N!
Just read through the full notes, and it's a nice touch that my Switch will finally recognize that I do not own a white pro controller, rather, the Xenoblade one.
It may just be stability and extra perks, but who doesn't want their console to have stability and extra perks? This is a nice update overall.
Captured videos restricted by parental controls must have something to do with this feature enabled for Outlast...
A decent update. Tired of comments (why not this? why not that? meow, meow, arf, arf).
There's a new update for the joy cons too.
I saw on my friend’s Switch an option for themes like the 3DS...wonder when these are coming?
After looking at this update, my play activity log is back to where it was before the year anniversary. I wonder if this bug prompted something that should have been 4.5 rather than a 5. Well, the next update will have some of the features we are requesting.
Nintendo will eventually make the Switch as functional as the 3DS.
@MH4 Love that!
Yeah but wasn't everyone asking why we cant add people we know? Well now you can via Facebook and Twitter.
The thing I like the most is the player icons, but the rest was just ok. 😕
The joy cons also received an update...
If anyone notices anything different with the cons let me know.
Still curious if they'll enable that blue light around the home button on the right joy con. 🤔
odd that player icons even need a firmware update, those should be added on the fly by Nintendo anytime
#WiiUisBetter
Read the title, saw the number, and could feel a faint excitement at my core. The screen lit up, I went to my profile icon, hopes held high, and my faith was rewarded. after months of waiting, ARMS finally stands among titans as an option for icons! Though Biff has yet to grace the profiles of user, this was a glorious day for stretchy fighters everywhere!
(yeah, I'm pretty happy I can finally be Spring Man in the update. Sorry Me Mii, but hopefully you'll get a chance to shine in a Smash game, or some other mii title on Switch. You served your purpose well, and will not be forgotten!)
On another note, I do wonder when there will be more significant updates. Something like themes wouldn't make sense for an online service since they can just charge a dollar for it, and they have plenty of options to choose from (plus they can get creative with themes if they want to) so, fingers crossed it'll be sooner than later.
PYYYYYYRAAAA!!!!
Well, on a positive note, love the options to whitelist games via parental controls.
@stevenw45
The GC controllers work totally fine already, with any game.
I'm a bit disappointed. Oh well, 6.0.0 it is...
So we are getting Kirby and ARMS icons but no Xenoblade 2? Meh.
The NL comment section reminds me of the slime in Ghostbusters 2. It just bubbles with bad vibes. Mmmm...slime.
Soooo... still no themes, no folders, no custom arrangement of game icons...
But hey stability.
Great !
Still no folders? I have like, 20 shmups now, it would be nice to be able to bring my games into some kind of order.
Kinda lame.
I'm certainly glad all the ARMS diehards are enjoying it though. @BensonUI must be thrilled beyond measure lol
But ya, mostly just a bunch of parental control crap. Twitter/FB friend invites is appreciated but, still no searching by username. ARMS and Kirby avatars are cool but, still no Xenoblade. New feed filtering but, still no way to exclude region-specific updates. Prepurchase ready to play notifications... cool, I guess. Whitelisting games for parental controls... ok, that's decent I suppose. Colors of handles for Pro controllers? It's cool, don't get me wrong, but...
We want themes. We want folders. We want custom software tile arrangement. We want achievements. We want USB drive support for the dock...
I know cloud saves and all that won't come til the online is here, but come on, it's been a full year now. Reggie says they want this to be a world class system. Well, I say prove it. Because it's not at world class level... not yet anyways. Don't get me wrong, I love Switch and even despite the fact the hardware featureset is not world class, it's still easily my favorite gaming console I've ever owned. Nothing will change that. But gosh dang it, it deserves more. It deserves to be world class. It deserves to be better than just "the best console I've owned". It deserves to be "the best console I've owned 1,000x over and lacking nothing"
Ball's in your court Nintendo. Show us you can do world class.
Stability! TRADITIOOON!
They called that a 5.0.0 release? I'd call that a minor release at best.
For the love of god, implement a way to back up our save data.
@Yrreiht Maybe you should start saying other stuff! lol
i went through all of the changes made to the Nintendo Switch during the firmware updates.
some were nice. i do not really care about the controller updates that were released with firmware version 5.0.
however, firmware v5.0 has some flaws to it. for some reason firmware v5.0 only supports a maximum of 4 controllers at a time.
i got firmware version 4.x to support up to 9 controllers. i think it can support more but no need for that unless we can have 8+ player support for super smash bros.
since firmware version 5.0 removed support for having more than 4 controllers connected to the system at the same time; does anyone know how i can get in contact with Nintendo so that i can get them to fix that issue.
or better yet; does anyone know a work around in firmware version 5.0 to get more than 4 controllers connected to the system at the same time.
@Blur_Escalation
i know the GameCube controllers work great with many of the games on the system.
however, i would like official support for GameCube controllers on the system.
@Grumblevolcano they didnt give us an avatar of Mario's Cereal Box. i'm disappointed with Nintendo as well! 😞
Lacking key featurrrrrrres Ninty
@JaxonH World class stability.* 😆
On the bright side, I bought Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival yesterday so this won't be distracting me from my Wii U. 4 days until Kirby.
*Got an email today about the PS3 OtherOS lawsuit, I'm in line for $65, but there's nothing the Switch has to take away so we have that going for us. I'm still mad about the Wii Nintendo Channel shutting down b/c that's were they kept the play logs. We might be nearing 1,000 hours on SSBB but we'll never know. 😢
On most updates I chuckle at the "stability" and the jokes that come after.
This time though, I'm pleasantly surprised that it is actually stability I can feel. (The playtime issue)
@JHDK
I just created both a European and Japanese account and ugh, the Japanese news spamming is out of control!
Awesome but still no internet browser.
So, so much stability. It's so beautiful.

Folders damnit!! Give us FOLDERS!
Somewhat disappointed. Was hoping for cloud saves, a few themes and a folder option on the homescreen. Oh well, til the next update.
New icons are cool. Social media features are convenient. Parental Control options are thoughtful...
But what I desire above all else... FOLDERS! Please? I love the folders on my 3DS. It encourages a vast library of software. There are some games that I actually forget that I have just because they're buried in a mess of shuffled software. It really is an essential feature that we're missing out on here...
It's hilarious that every time a modern console releases, Folders are not part of day one OS, leaving people to beg for years before they finally implement them.
I'm not surprised that there isn't anything huge in this update, Nintendo are stabilizers first and foremost. Everytime a 3DS or Wii U update would be on the horizon or just appear, people would hope for something great but end up just getting stability. Lol.
There was only a few 3DSWii U updates that were significantly system changing.
I am glad they fixed the play time issue and we can connect with Facebook and Twitter for Friend lists. That is pretty nice.
But themes, folders, and a proper activity log are all things people have been asking for for months and would be, as far as I have been able to determine, very easy for Nintendo to implement. Further I can think of no reason not to have at least the folders and activity log.
The only reason for not having themes added that I can come up with - aside from an meaningless "we just don't want to add them" - is the idea that they are planning a large OS overhaul when the Online Service begins and any themes released now would need to be remade.
It does seem underwhelming for a big update number, but I have a feeling they were laying the groundwork for certain new features to be added soon.
@rjejr
Speaking of playtimes, I just downloaded the parental controls app. Wish I'd done it a long time ago. It has super precise counters and monthly report. Really cool app actually. If I had kids I'd use it for sure.
You ready to jump back into DKC Tropical Freeze with your favorite groovy surfing simian? Even you could enjoy the game with Funky. And still have the items to buy like invincibility, free fall balloons, extra hearts, etc.
See you're excited for Kirby. Makes sense, it's a co-op game. Me, not so much. I'm buying it but I can't say I'm all that excited. That is reserved for DKC, Dark Souls, Mario Tennis Aces, Octopath, El Capi'tan Toastada aka The Cap'n aka Lieutenant Toadstool (which releases same day as Octopath, how bout that eh?).
But seriously. That Mario Tennis Aces. Wow.
meh
Also, why no Xenoblade icons???
Over a year in and still missing basic stuff. I really wish I could see when people are online without being in a game. I mean the Wii U had that.
So more like a 4.2 update then
@CptProtonX that's comment sections on pretty much any fansite. Fanship itself is aptly comparable to aforesaid slime in many aspects, after all.
I think this update could be meant to lay the ground work for when the online service launches
Fun fact, when you try to link your Facebook on your friends list and mess up the password, you get a chance to surf it like a web browser.
LOL everyone got trolled by Nintendo once again.
It seems nothing can be done about the Japanese Nintendo Direct news channel but everything else Japanese is gone! Had to go into System Settings>System >News Channel Settings to disable the Japanese eShop news feed. Just FYI.
@Folkloner in my theory, yes. Darn near everything we want on the dashboard will be enabled once we fork over money for online. Fair? Probably not, but business comes first and we will pay for access to what we want.
I’ll tell ya this. Nothing groundbreaking but the eShop browsing seems more responsive. I noticed a bad delay before, moving from section to section. Less annoying at least.
@Heavyarms55 IKR!?
@Folkloner
We'll be lucky to get just one of those things you mentioned
@JaxonH
Haha. I'm happy. But I was hoping for another Master Mummy pose. Also I agree, we need that "mute" button on the newsfeed especially for our JP accounts.
To all expecting themes; that will probably come for those who buy their online subscription. Because that should be something worth our money :/
Everyone on the web:
http://i0.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/000/840/319/4e6.gif
But I donˋt really care.😎 Switch has the best game console interface at the moment and even if we never should get folders, I can l live with it as long as they donˋt make the OS worse by adding unnecessary stuff.😨
I'm curious to know how big the team is that works on the Switch updates.
Good grief. Why do Console UI designers hate the idea of folders. They always take ages. 3DS got them April 2012 (15 months after launch), Wii U was September 2014 (22 months after launch), PS4 was September 2016 (22 months after launch). Xbox One still hasn't.
Users love them, UI designers hate them. It's bizarre.
There is also an update for Joy-Cons
Folders.
Very underwhelming update. I want folders. I need folders.
I'm going to download this now.
I actually got one of my most wanted features in this update, my Spla2n Pro Controller will finally show as having pink and green grips 😁
@Damo There's also an update for the joycon controllers under System Settings / Controllers and Sensors / Update Controller.
@Retroike7 @foobarbaz @daveh30 @redd214 A few interconnectivity features added this update that can cause compatability issues with older version, hence a full X.0.0 is added to the firmware number. Note that when developers ship devices that may not always all be on the same firmware, and those devices have networking capabilities, they need to program in exceptions and handling for when one device attempts to use a feature another may not.
Update numbers aren't supposed to indicate the level of enjoyment the end-user receives from it.
And still no Daisy icon.
Comment not found due to site error.
These are some rather pleasant little upgrades.
The GameCube controller hiccup that made setting up the Switch to use the GameCube controller via the Wii U adapter harder and a bit more time consuming from 4.1.0. has been fixed by the new update.
In the words of so many Pon: "meh, mehmeh!"
Nintendo: Save game backups please!
I just want folders already!
@stevenw45
They had to update the system to support the adapter, and it recognises every slot as a seperate controller. If that doesn't qualify as official. Should the system display shapes of GC controllers? Or what do you mean?
If they're calling this update 5.0.0 at this rate they'll run out of numbers soon enough.
I really have no desire to share my video game paying habits with my Facebook friends. But I do wonder why there isn't an option to send a screen cap to someone on my Switch friends list.
I reckon it was a case of they needed to fix the play time, updated that and chucked a few extras out that were finished in the update at the same time. The other stuff will follow later. Too logical and calm?
Nintendo will let you know when interesting features are going to be added to a console. They have done when folders were coming for the Wii U and they updated us (through a direct if I remember correctly) when they launched 3DS themes.
If it's a regular system update they won't.
How is everyone so mad at things that were never promised?
So still no XC2 icons but Arms? Nintendo really doesn't want to make it look like Arms failed.
Dear Nintendo, where is my LED notifications under the HOME button???? Please I really need this!!!
@TMG44
Arms didn't fail. It has sold well over a million copies and it hasn't even been out a year yet.
@Kimyonaakuma
Those features will only be available on the New 3DSwitch XL Deluxe VR Plus (that will be released 5 month before the announcements of a new generation of hardware)
After reading through the updates notes, I felt a little disappointed. A bit like listening to Rolling in my 5.0 from Vanilla Ice really.
I love my switch but it's missing key elements in it's OS which are putting me off. The activity log is a mess, no folders, no themes, no media apps, friends list could be much better.. idk man. I first felt skeptical when there were no games but was proven wrong shortly, I hope it will be the same with the OS. and yeah you have to be a freakin wizard to figure out the voice chat
I want trophies or whatever nintendo will call them
why not "Badges"?
@vitalemrecords Ugh, no no no. Achievements ruin a game; they take the fun of playing a game and turn it into a chore.
Is anyone have any issues post update?! Our launch day switch will no longer connect to the dock. Plugging the cable directly into the switch itself works fine but it won't recognize the dock at all! Was working fine last night right before updating 😥
What a trash update! Gaming media needs to start shitting on Nintendo so we can finally get a good update!
We want: cloud saves, VC, themes, friend messaging system, folders and actual voice chat. The app is garbage and no1 uses it.
@Grumblevolcano Or even Fire Emblem icons.
@JaxonH No DK for me still, I've had my fill of ports. And the Kirby demo was fun even solo, it's like the whole game is Zen mode, but I am planning on playing it with my kids instead of alone.
We aren't a big tennis family, and the ND made it look less like tennis, more like a tactical 2D fighter. Maybe I'd pick it up on clearance at Target after it becomes a Select.
Octopath isn't my type of JRPG. I still need to play XC2, NNK2 and DQXI, and maybe Ys 8, that looks pretty good. Oh and KH 1-6 on PS4 before 3 releases. I know those aren't quite JRPG but close enough.
After Kirby our next Switch game might be Labo, but that's an arts & craft project more than a videogame. Switch purchase has almost been a waste for us really, but I know they'll run out of Wii U games to port eventually and it will keep us busy for a few years while we wait for the PS5 to drop in price. Still plenty to play on the PS4 the next 2 years.
And you were right about PSVR, haven't touched it in over a week as I put all my free time into Horizon. I think I need 2 to 3 more months for that before I start anything else big. Though I'm also playing Uncharted LL, which is like 1 side quest in Horizon, I'll be done with that this weekend.
I like the parental app for the logs, I don't use it to control anything. My kids are both teenagers now, I don't so much control them as dissuade them. 😉 Both of whom have a snow day today, it's good to be kids.
seems more like a 4.2 update...unless there are some hidden features under the hood that they haven't announced yet
@Cosats Yep it started off quite tame but some people are having meltdowns, which is nice.
Looking back my earlier post is too normal, I should edit it and turn it into a more obvious whin....I mean opinion.
@Kimyonaakuma don't bet on it the Wii u died before we got what we wanted from day one.
The UK and Euro never got to use the TV icon!
The GameCube titles hinted by reggie on the day of launch to the que never arrived!
@Blur_Escalation
the system was never updated to support the GameCube controller adapter. from what i heard, Nintendo added support for the adapter to the system by accident. i forgot if that was a rumor or not.
the Nintendo switch is not responsible for recognizing the GameCube controllers in order for them to work properly. the controller adapter is responsible for the GameCube controllers working properly. it is the job of the system to recolonize the adapter.
and as you may have notice when the GameCube controllers are plugged into the Nintendo Switch; they are detected as generic Nintendo Switch Pro controller.
if they add official support they can not only make it so that the controllers are detected properly and shown as such; they could take advantage of the controllers analog L/R triggers for use in some games. like Mario Kart for example. of course then a button remapping may be required for that.
also, some games have an action mapped across several buttons. Nintendo can take advantage of this. for example in supper Mario odyssey there are two buttons for jumping and two buttons for throwing cappy. with a little button remapping, Nintendo can take advantage of it. example: in super Mario odyssey one of the buttons on the GameCube controller can be remapped to be used as a "home"button.
Of course Nintendo went with the safe choice: Stability.
Am I going to have to hack my Switch for some colorful background action?! I don’t hack Nintendo.
I replace stuff with Apple stuff, so I’m staring to consider an iPad Pro. I won’t even have to buy a background, it will let me use my own photos... And have incredibly cute cats, it makes even Pokémons look pretty dull.
Yeah, it's really weird they're going with the big X.0 numbers. All this fabulous stability could've easily fit into 1.5 to date. Then 2.0 would be a major thing with folders and themes and onlines, oh my.
Big numbers help build hype, but it seems like the N doesn't quite get it. A few years from now we'll be on v 27.0 and it won't mean a thing, unfortunately.
Edit: Just tried out the update and it doesn't seem to matter whether you have FB and Twitter linked to you Nintendo ID, it just asks to link it on Switch again? Weird. Super Mario Run worked great there, why not Switch?
I think Nintendo need a few more people working on this!
Meh..
Still no folders. That's pretty much the only function I miss from Switch now.
@CptProtonX It always does...
Will we ever get a web browser
So no themes or folders and the eshop interface is still non-existent. Lovely
Tried the Facebook connection... Still no friends. I hope my son grows up knowing more people than my wife and I.
@pinta_vodki Well the update is very likely releasing alongside a SoC revision too, so... I'd say that's pretty big. Anyway, developers can do whatever the hell they want with version numbers. If they want us to know about features, they'll advertise them, not throw obscure numbers at us. Expecting to guess features from version numbers is like telling what games are releasing next using tea leaves.
This is all fine and dandy I suppose, but we're now over 1 year in and STILL no themes, web browser, YouTube or Netflix?!!
So, nothing really big.
My Switch has been in Airplane mode ever since I updated the console and thus haven't tried to use the facebook and twitter friend recommendations yet.
Wow, Switch is already on version 5 this soon in its lifespan.
More like 4.2
@MH4
This is a worthy idea thumbs up from me
@ICISAZEL @The_Pixel_King Thanks!! 😊
