One of the most underrated but amazing games from the Wii U's library is making the jump to the Switch. The new version of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker includes new miniature courses based on various Kingdoms in Super Mario Odyssey, which is a welcome addition.
Also, anyone can play with a friend or family member by sharing a pair of Joy-Con controllers. While one player controls Captain Toad, the other can assist with things like turnip cover fire.
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker launches for Nintendo Switch on the 13th of July. A Nintendo 3DS version of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, which includes stereoscopic 3D visuals and touch-screen controls, also launches on the same day.

This game is so charming I can't help but get it day 1.
Wii U ports galore. The fact that this game has been chosen, to me says that they're going to port over so many more Wii U games in the future. CT: TT used the SM3DW engine and now it's using some of the assets from SMO.
I'll double dip, especially as it has new levels based on Odyssey!
Meh, ANOTHER WiiU port. It is a great game...that will probably launch for $60! It was $40 on WiiU.
3D visuals?! Garrghh...
Looks like I'm triple dipping on this.
Why, oh, why?!
And why couldn't Luigi's Mansion get the same multiplatform treatment?
They got me with the new content.
I'll buy it again for some Odyssey themed levels and the portability. This seems like the perfect game for a short train ride
Not sure how the touchscreen levels work, I saw a cursor but I don't know how that would work well on a TV...
Probably my favorite Wii U game...and with bonus content? SOLD.
Once Mario Maker Switch is announced, my Wii U is gonna be ready for the long sleep.
This really disappointed me. I enjoyed the first one but for the amount of content I already felt $60 was too much for it. Yet they have some new stages here, and now it’s either shell out another $60 just to play a few new stages or... well, don’t play them. Which I suppose is the nature of these ports with added content, I just can’t justify spending full price on this game again... would’ve preferred a sequel at least.
And wait, we didn’t have any Odyssey DLC revealed, noooo!!!
I’m ok with these Wiiu ports. Because I never had one. But I feel sad for those Double dippers.
@ShadJV : Wasn't this a budget-priced release on Wii U?
It was in Australia anyway.
Never bought the Wii U version, so the Switch version is welcomed.
@ShadJV The original was $40. Nintendo may have gotten away with a $10 increase on Tropical Freeze but I doubt they'd try charging 60 bucks for this game. At least I hope they don't.
My only concern about these Wiiu ports is price. Looks like they trat them as a new games.
The only surprising thing about these ports is that there’s still no Captain Toad amiibo
As someone who loves and owns the Wii U version, I legit screamed when this was announced. It’s not just a lazy port, they’re actually adding new content!
If this was a sequel, I would be all for it. The new added SMO stages are just not enticing enough for me to warrant a second purchase.
im so gonna get the 3DS version. always wanted to play that game as i love toad but never had a wiiU
It’s time to sell the Wii u games. Not really. The Wii u exclusives are not exclusives.
I won’t be buying this as I have it on Wii u and enjoyed it but would love to play the new oddysse stages. If only they gave us Wii u owners that in dlc. It’s too much to ask I know.
If you wanna play the new stages. You have to buy it all again
I m getting the 3ds version
OUT OF NOWHERE MY FAVORITE GAME I HAVE NEVER THOUGHT WOULD MAKE IT TO 3DS!
3DS GONNA LIVE FOREVAAA!!!
@PokeMario my bad. I still remember feeling I spent too much by the time I finished (a few hours after I started). And I tried replaying it once but it wasn’t as interesting when I knew every solution. I still wish we at least got a sequel instead...
I'm interested, but it does depend on price. I never owned a WiiU, but this would have been one of the games I'd bought if I had. I tried it out briefly in a Gamestop while waiting around for something and it was a lot of fun - at least for the time I played.
Another Wii U game I skipped on because the Wii U was dead to me... yet I am thrilled to pick this up now on Switch where it will shine! If not a day 1, it will be that week at least!
3DS version for me. I just wish they announced more games for the 3DS since I don’t really game on the Switch
bup yes
Never bought the game on Wii U (Holiday 2014 was pretty much Smash Bros and little else for me), so this will be a definite purchase. The new Mario Odyssey stages look nice.
Of course, the game better be reasonably priced. If it's freaking $60, I'll gladly wait for a price drop.
@sillygostly
Because Luigi's Mansion 3DS is most likely running on the Luigi's Mansion 2 engine, which isn't available on Switch.
Guess they couldn't do the same thing with Captain Toad and port it over to both systems...
-
Yeah yeah, I know what I said. I'll abandon NL when I feel like it. It's a free country.
I would of loved a sequel. It’s a great game and all first time players will love it
Fantastic news, was hoping for this, so glad they added 2 player as well should be fun!
@filterclay
#Nintendo3DSForever
Lol I probably should have expected this. I picked up the Wii U version a few months ago, unfortunately. I'm not sure if this'll be worth the double-dip.
I still am finishing up the original.
MY BOI CAPT'N TOAD READY TO F*** S*** UP IN NEW DONK CITY
YES!!! Double dip incoming!!!
@10-zx YYYAAYYYY!!! I'M TOTALLY FOR MORE PORTS ON 3DS! Just for the love we have in it!
Actually love this game and will def pick it up again but E3 really needs to show some new titles as this second year is wayyyyyy too port heavy so far. Even the 3ds stuff are ports
Never got a Wii U so will have a second chance to pick this up.
@Prof_Yoshtonics You can be sure it'll be $60.
Which version though? I’m leaning towards the 3DS for the 3D effects. I already own it in the Wii U.
Never had this on Wii U so this port doesn't bother me. I do wonder which is better, 3DS version or Wii U version?
This was on my Switch wish list! Nintendo checked off a few boxes with this direct!
Been waiting for this since its launched in WiiU. Day 1 purchase for sure from me.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Oh I'm certain of it. Overall I was pretty disappointed in today's Direct. Old ports I've played. No new games except Tennis which looks really boring. I was crushed to see NMH be a top-down perspective. Why can't we just get a few 3rd person action adventures or action-rpg's?
I purposely held off on buying this for Wii U for this very reason, can’t wait!
The only downside is that both this and Octopath Traveller come out on the same day.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
I picked up the Wii U on launch day which happened to be my birthday. Loved the hell outta the thing, still do. I get your dislike for these ports. But be honest, do you not think that the NEW switch audience deserves a chance on these?
@Dazza You forgot to add the 3DS version to the related games section.
The Wii U game gets a lot of love here, and I’ve never tried it.
I hope there’s a demo.
@Prof_Yoshtonics yeah I was disappointed with how NMH looked. Was really looking forward to it and it wasn’t what I expected. I’ll wait and see though. It may play better than it looks
@JoeDiddley it’s a great game. Really charming little game. Weirdly soothing playing experience
@Mr_Pepperami I sure hope so.
Another month, another Wii U port.
Did you guys miss Lil ol me?
Nice, this was a charming little game and I'll definitally get it again. What will they do about all those touch based levels though?
@Twonips They could have played the games on Wii U. Nothing stopped them.
I was thinking if they were perhaps digital only and straight ports onto the eShop, then maybe. You know the Wii U got that. Wii games, €20 a pop. But why charge €20 when you can charge €60 and do relatively little work and in some cases add nothing new, e.g. the Bayonetta games.
@sillygostly haha, RIGHT?!? Heck, thry could even easily make thr Arcade version of Luigi's mansion into an eShop port, at the very least!!
@Kiolu100 Im curious of the same thing... or even the segments where you blow into the mic
@Twonips no man don't you know, it's all about what he has played and not letting others enjoy games. As if anyone is holding a gun over his head to make him buy these games again.
Great game on Wiiu! This was my favorite announcement...but I thought it was a sequel, not a port. I'm a little down now to read here that I was mistaken. Will I double dip? If it's the same $40 price maybe. No if $60.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I was thinking something similar like the Wii u ports should be eshop digital only like with Wii titles on Wii u but monies
Hope there will be a lot of new content, otherwise Wii U owners who own this game are once again screwed over.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE er only the fact that most people didn't want to own a Wii U. I have said it plenty of times before, that console was toxic.
This game should have always been a 3DS title. Releasing it on Wii U was a mistake.
Great release for switch and 3DS gamers.
What is crystal clear is that Nintendo are treating the Wii U as a console that never existed.
Awesome to see this game coming to the 3DS and Switch, especially the 3DS. Now where's Star Fox Zero with an improved control scheme? =P
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Well, it is already priced (at least in Japan) and it is 3980 yen which translates to about 37 US dollars...
This is a great Wii U game, but I will not be picking it up for the Switch not interested in purchasing games that I already on. So where are the NEW Switch games at so tired of seeing port after port of Wii U games.
Would have preffered a sequel. Will only get if there are enough new levels and not overpriced
Hm....
I will take a look again from Super Mario 3D World.
Run that. They're smart to exploit the Wii U catalog. They can release 3-4 Wii U gems- games proven to be good that gamers love, for the same resources as one new title which may or may not be received well.
This is how you jam pack the Switch with great games at Mach 3.
Best part is, we'll still get almost the exact same number of new games as we otherwise would have. Like, 10 new games in 2018 or 8 new games and 6 Wii U gems ported over. A small sacrifice (2 unproven titles less) for a huge gain (6 excellent, beloved games more)
Well played indeed.
@maruse The price never converts like that from Yen. Trust me, it'll be €50 at least.
All the port hate is just ridiculous.
If you already own the game on Wii U, who's forcing you to buy it again? You've had years to enjoy the game already which is something that many (probably most) people did't do.
Ports are for people who haven't played that game yet, not for those who already have and feel like they're being forced to buy the same stuff all over again.
Well, here's a secret for you: the world doesn't revolve around you, so if you don't want the game, just ignore it. Easy enough I think.
Depends on the price.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I know that prices don't convert evenly between countries (just look at the 41% increase on Rocket League DLC in Japan), but considering that the original was $40, I believe it'll be the same... (hopefully?)
Good fit for the Switch...they can port this but NOT Luigi????
@SLIGEACH_EIRE lol what movie?
Looking forward that 3DS version.
@joey302 The Beverly Hillbillies.
I keep expecting to wake up one day and see that my Switch has actually morphed into a Wii U...
Seriously though, while it is tempting to think "Oh God, more Wii U ports..." the Wii U was such a disaster, I can't really begrudge them giving some of these games a second chance at glory.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE This really is a stupid, spoiled-brat mentality you're adopting here. Nintendo releasing Wii U games on Switch doesn't detract from your ability to play the Wii U versions of those games. Your Wii U versions won't vanish. You can keep owning and playing them for as long as you want. If you're feeling left out, that's a you problem.
-from a Wii U early adopter who owns practically every Wii U game
I was expecting, hoping even, for a couple WiiU port announcements but...this wasn't one of them. I'm fairly confident Xenoblade X will come down the line, and so will Tokyo Mirrage Sessions with some luck so I'll just have to wait a bit longer.
Also, if you've already bought the game and have no interest in a Switch port, maybe...just don't buy it again? A thought.
I'm low key pretty excited for this. It's one of the few games I wanted on the Wii U but never got around to picking up. The 3DS version seems like a bit of an odd decision but I guess it exposes the game to more people. Looking forward to playing as Toadette!
Lolz. The Wii U version was the very next thing on my To Do list (after Yoshi’s Woolly World and the last few shrines in BotW), but now it’s joining Bayonetta on the sell-unplayed-and-upgrade list.
@KingdomHeartsFan So what has Nintendo released so far this year? And we're into March. Bayonetta/Bayonetta 2? Em, I own it already, what are people like me supposed to play? Or in the coming months? Kirby? Probably not. There's more Wii U ports coming in the shape of Hyrule Warriors and Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze before E3. Plus more from others.
Honestly, I felt like this was a better minigame rather than a full game.
Seems to be ¥3980 which is about $37 so I’m guessing the final price will be $40 just like the original.
Came back to commenting NintendoLife (it's been a busy month, y'all) just for this Direct.
Not gonna lie: the 3D effects on the 3DS port are going to make this game finally worth it.
Also, New Donk City assets with 3D on, what's not to love?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Actually, there was one thing that kept people from playing these games on Wii U: the perfectly reasonable desire not to own the debacle that was the Wii U.
I just finished setting up my new gaming setup and my Wii U is sitting next to my Switch. One of the games I started playing was this one. It is fun, but definitely not a double-dip kind of game.
More expensive ports coming! People apparently hate Wii U but love seeing Wii U ports. Wii U was great, the fact that it was quickly abandoned by Nintendo doesn't make it an awful console.
@BAN No of course they won't disappear but they are being belittled with these ports.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I actually feel you on this one. A few days ago I believe I left a comment disagreeing with you on how it's not too bad that there's all of these wii u ports. I thought about it some more and while it's cool to see new people playing these games, it does feel like it's a big middle finger from Ninty for everyone who bought the wii u versions. We payed up to $60 for a now inferior version of a game and now a few years later wii u owners have very little to show for it. Really feels like it was pointless to support the wii u. The only thing that I'm kinda glad about is that I didn't pay all that much for most of my wii u games (I bought most of them years after release) so the sting isn't as bad.
Yet another port. Lame. I have zero interest in this.
This was all I wanted 😀👍
@JimmySpades dont how @SLIGEACH_EIRE can still not accept that people didn't want to play the Wii U. These ports are for those very same people. They are new games to lots of switch gamers.
If you don't like ports. Simple solution is to not buy them. Like others have said, Nintendo's switch output does not resolve around your likes and desires.
Never got it in Wii U despite it having my interest, so its in my to buy list now. It's so cute!
Same day as Octopath? July 13th is the new October 27th.
This is my backup plan if Kirby bombs
Does the Switch version have touch screen controls.The Nintendo Direct seems to briefly mention it but various web articles I read haven't brought it up?
@JedRock I believe in some Wii U games you could just hold a button like in that DK Nintendo Land game, I'm more interested in those levels with those glowy blocks that you have to tap to move, though that could just be a button press like the mic situation.
I'm looking forward to this. Love it on Wii U. Just don't love that I gotta wait til July
Definitely a fun game. But, I have no need to double-dip on this one...even with the added co-op. I wonder if it has the Toad amiibo support like on the Wii U?
Looks like this game is $40, which makes sense considering it's on 3DS too. Gut feeling says it would be $60 if it wasn't coming to 3DS.
Sushi Striker on Switch is also $40 by the way.
Looks like 2018 is set to maintain focus on them through ports as the bigger devved projects are being finished.
But Capt. Toad... one I suspected wouldn't be ported due to the features.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
What's a Wii u? But seriously I hope they port over the entire Wii u catalog , and that's life no one is forcing any Wii u owners to double dip . Just like no one is forcing me to re buy all the Blu Rays I got this year and replace them with 4k Blu Rays. , do you play any ports on your Wii u , ya know maybe some smb3 or any other ports from the past 3 decades on the virtual console , your a salty Sally's who only complains on this site , captain toad is a great game to add to the switch library , just face it bro Wii u is dead . Why don't ya put an egg in your shoe and beet it.
I've been wanting to replay this, and was actually expecting a Switch port so... I might get it.
@JaxonH Seriously, the Wii U was the four and a half year trainwreck that will fuel the Switch for at least three years. Recycling is good when it saves the planet but bad when it comes to video games? Why?
These Wii U ports are taking almost no effort from Nintendo, you can be sure they are putting their most junior teams on them. Those teams are getting experience to move onto bigger and better things while the A and B (and probably C) teams are free to work on Metroid and Animal Crossing and Smash and Fire Emblem and maybe even more out there things like the next Zelda and Mario already. It doesn't take up much extra development time, and while they're at it we get almost a game a month, unlike the Wii U era when we could go up to SIX months without a new release. Now sure, these games weren't system sellers on the Wii U (or the Wii U would have sold better) but the rapid-fire output of them onto the Switch builds a library fast and a big library IS a system seller in and of itself. Even if one particular game isn't enough to sway a person, the sheer output of these ports on a console that has Zelda, has Mario, is getting Fire Emblem, is getting Metroid, is getting Pokemon, is getting Smash (which itself may or may not be a port but clearly has new content regardless), is probably enough to sway somebody to the system. And with all the third party support (also mainly ports) as well, they know they can get their favorite games all in one place - the Switch is not the Nintendo console just for Nintendo fans, like the Wii U was. It's the console for everybody.
@Kiolu100 knowing Nintendo, I'm sure they've came up with an intuitive solution... regardless.. super stoked about this title
@TheLobster
Great post. Everybody read post #117.
@Grawlog
"There are so many entitled Wii U owners around here. You all have no right to be the only people to experience these games. You're not special. Get over yourselves."
Absolute truth. I've come to the conclusion some Wii U owners are the whiniest spoiled brats in gaming. They got these games first but now think they're 'getting the middle finger' or being 'belittled ' because they're getting released for a bigger audience.
Did SNES owners feel the same about the GBA library? Don't think so. I don't remember the outpouring of complaints from PS3 owners when The Last of Us anchored PS4 early on. Nobody is taking their existing versions away.
It's pathetic.
I hope they have the pixel toad game too.
@maruse, I totally agree with you. There are too many whiners and complainers here. You people act like Nintendo is not going to give you new games. They will. It takes time. Meanwhile if you are so upset about ports, that majority of have not even played, then shame on you. I thought the direct was pretty good. They are bringing out games that came out on other systems first to finally put them on the switch. I am sure that majority of switch owners are happy with that. Second, not every body in the world has a WII u, so why not bring the good games and put it on a new system that is hybrid at that. It happens on other systems, but you probably are not bothered by that. If all they have are new games, then it wouldn't be that many because development takes time. you would be complaining about a lack of games just like the wii u. How many new games are coming out for ps4 and xbox one? not that many. Having ports and indies diversify the games on the switch. just be patient, there will be more new games coming.
This is such a title that I may prefer on 3DS
$32 after gamer’s club discount means I’ll probably buy this. Looks fun.
You know, with some of the complaining that I've seen here about "Wii U ports, Wii U ports", I'd figure some of these games would have sold a helluva lot better than they actually did.
Forget about the "Most people don't own a Wii U so Wii U ports will be new to those newcomers" line of reasoning. Most Wii U owners didn't even buy many of these Wii U games that are now being ported to the Switch. Titles like DKC:TF and Captain Toad barely cracked 1 million copies sold despite being acclaimed and having reduced price tags.
Loved this game but not gonna double dip. This is different to mario kart and other ports in that it holds no replay value what so ever.
I think there are some people on here who will be unhappy no matter what Nintendo does. They cannot seem to comprehend that Nintendo's first party studios cannot produce a triple A game every month. Neither can Sony or Microsoft for that matter. I purchased a Wii U shortly after launch and remember the huge gaps between releases. It was truly depressing. Porting the Wii U's back catalogue makes a lot of sense. There were some truly great games that never found an audience because the console was a commercial failure.
All that being said I'm not sure I would have picked Captain Toad for the porting treatment. It was a decent little game but over very quickly. Hopefully there will be a lot of new content. It's also worth noting that the Wii U version was released at a budget price (£29.99) so it will be interesting to see how much they charge for the Switch version.
This is disappointing. I was hoping for an all new Captain Toad game. I loved it on Wii U, but I don't think I'll be playing another port of another Wii U game I've already played, even if they added a couple of new stages.
@electrolite77 Thank you! <3
Love this game on wii u nice to see it’s getting new content will have to double dip one of my most played wii u games . I was hoping for some f zero news but guess it’s not happening at least not this year always hopeful though
This one hurts. With new levels based on Super Mario Odyssey now I need it. Problem is I have it on Wii U unplayed but also unsealed and of little reselling worth. Dilemma.
@gortsi Don't forget his precious collection of PEGI 3 games getting devalued!
@westman98 Yeah they weren't exactly big sellers. Less than a tenth of the Wii U population played it but going by what you read in here you'd think it sold 13.5 million copies...
How does a bird put a turban on exactly?
Personally, I am really excited for this one - I loved the original game, and will happily play it again on Switch, since my WiiU has been unplugged for almost a year.
And for everyone who is complaining about the number of WiiU ports coming out in the next months...the Switch has already sold more units in a year than the WiiU did in its life cycle, meaning Nintendo can give a number of amazing games a new lease of life with minimal affort and a bit of extra polish. As a company, their aim is to make money - and if people who had never even heard of these games can now buy them for a new, very successful console, there is a chance to sell them again at full price. Plus, there’s double-dippers who want to play the game again on the new console (like yours truly).
Now, if they re-released Wind Waker and Twilight Princess on the Switch, too, I could officially trade my WiiU and my handful of remaining games in...
Lol, predicted this.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2018/03/donkey_kong_country_tropical_freeze_will_get_a_retail_release_but_itll_cost_you_usd60#comment4369669
Nintendo has no shame.
@BigKing lol. What next from Wii u oh great one
Captain Toad was a pretty great game! Was actually really disappointed that this was (yet another) remake/port, but if they add enough content I'll be glad to get this one again regardless.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE (@Prof_Yoshtonics )
"You can be sure it'll be $60."
According to Amazon and Gamestop it's $40 for the Switch version. Not such a tough pill to swallow now, especially if you get a preorder discount.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BBMV8MY
https://www.gamestop.com/nintendo-switch/games/captain-toad-treasure-tracker/159776
@MoonKnight7 In Europe, Amazon Germany are charging €70. But like your links, it's just a placeholder. If Nintendo have some decency, they won't charge more than the original Wii U price.
https://www.amazon.de/dp/B07BC5M4LM/
It's a very short game that I found ridiculously easy. TBH, I don't think it's great.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
If I were to preorder now from either of those sites, I would get it for $40, they have to hold true to that. I think that's where the price will land. Your link is probably a placeholder (like you said). It'll probably be adjusted later.
Aw I liked it, on the easier side, sure. It had a lot of charm though. I think this confirms a sequel is on the way later.
Not going to buy it unless it comes with double the levels. I already beat the Wii u version
Yay I was hoping this would come to Switch! Day 1!
This is definitely one of the titles that has some questions about how they can adapt the Gamepad elements. The mine cart stages, the touch features. I hope they don't resort to making certain levels, or the whole game, playable only in handheld mode.
The range of ports is hardly a bad thing. For anyone that doesn't need the double dip, the don't-get-it option is right there. The only drawback to rolling out these second chance Wii U games is that the Switch can't reproduce the gamepad aspects, which were put into a lot of the first party titles.
I'd like to see SM3DW get a chance at a bigger audience, and one that also has their full 3D Mario game as well so they can appreciate the way SM3DW plays without griping that it isn't a new SM64 style game. But that too has a couple levels dependent on the gamepad. It mostly plays with a pro controller until you get to Hands-On Hall, or the level with the pink platforms you tap on and the propellers you blow.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Wtf. I have a Wii U, I don't mind. Switch has plenty of other games. A lot of people missed out on some great games, because of Wii U. Makes sense to port them over.
Btw I never played Captain Toad and a 3DS version with stereoscopic 3D sounds nice.
Looking forward to playing it when it goes on sale, but I'm not dropping eighty bucks on this one. Maybe when it goes on sale for thirtyish I'll look at it for the Switch. Just can't justify paying for all of these wii U games on Switch at a brand new full price, especially when many of them are thirty bucks new on the Wii U.
"A Nintendo 3DS version of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, which includes stereoscopic 3D visuals"
3D, really? Hard to believe...
I played the game before. I won't buy a second version.
@james_squared Yes, there is the amiibo logo on the box art for the 3DS version so I assume there will be support for switch as well.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
Slig...try not to take it so hard. I loved WiiU, still have it. Now that its fully hacked it has great utility beyond running just WiiU libray. I bought many of WiiU exclusives and I am ok with ports, especially when they are mildly enhanced.
captoad is a great little game and honestly perfect for Switch because its a pick up and play puzzle game made for portable. Ports are the norm these days for every system. X86 twins get and have a ton of last gen ports and remakes. WiiU was a market failure. Like all Ninendo playforms it had some wonderul exlusives, they deserve to be ported and see a larger audience.
To everyone else fretting Toad is already listed @ $40 on USA sites so will be even cheaper with retail discounting.
