On March 21st we will be turning the clocks back to 1988, baby. The Data East classic Bad Dudes Vs. DragonNinja is hitting the Switch eShop thirty years after it thrilled arcade goers and entertained countless others via a series of ports.
Blade and Striker must fight the army of the evil DragonNinja crime syndicate in order to rescue President Ronnie, kidnapped straight out of the White House. Yes, these were everyday events during the '80s. Troubled times indeed.
The game is so far confirmed for release on the US eShop with a price tag of $9.99. Will you be a bad enough dude to pick it up? We heard burgers are on the menu for a successful rescue - just don't get roasted by Karnov at the end of level one...

"Are you a bad enough dude to rescue President Ronnie?"
Would anyone want to save President Donnie these days? Doubtful.

The sound effect where he powers up is really grating and repetitive, they all are. I don't think I could play a lot of these old games today unless I was on some nostalgia buzz. It's not just the sound effects that are repetitive, the game is. "I'm bad!" Oh you're bad alright.
Hmm... let me just test this:
Nice one. I skipped Gate of Doom but not this bad boy,a certain day one for me. I had 2 Crude Dudes on the Megadrive back in the day but didn't like it, I returned it for something else after a brief shot. I probably should have given it more of a chance as it had good reviews.
This is classic Data East. Played the heck out of this arcade cabinet at my local leisure centre as a kid. And on the Amiga port. Since returned to it on the Wii (Data East Arcade Classics collection) and via emulation. Would love to have it on my Switch. 100% nostalgia for me, despite its flaws. One of my all-time fave arcade games.
Is this from that Johnny Turbo label? Will it come to U.K. eShop? Still waiting on DARK SEAL aka GATE OF DOOM to appear.
Hopefully they update with Pixel Perfect option, was sad to see blur filters couldn’t turn off in Gate of a Doom. I emailed them about it but no reply, too bad.
Will be picking this up to relive old times with my bro.
@Shiryu oh...
you know im a bad enough dude
I’M BAD!!! I had this game back on the NES. Never played the original arcade game though. I’ll pick this up.
"I'M BAD!"
This original arcade game is already available in the game Data East Arcade Classics Collection for the Wii, in case anyone wants to get a cheaper version for the Wii U.
Hmmmm.... definitely on my radar. Hope it's half decent.
Why do people bemoan ports of more recent games but celebrate decades old arcade stuff? Look we all have a retro era that we look back fondly on and I am sure there is an audience for this sort of stuff...
But not all of us grew up in the late 70s and 80s. And those of us who were kids in the 90s and teens in the early 2000s want some of our nostalgia represented too. I want my N64, GB, GBA and Gamecube games brought back. Be them ports or remasters or virtual console. The kids of 15-20 years ago are the young adults of today and contrary to popular belief, a lot of us would rather play games than burn our money on booze at the club.
Cool but why is it 9.99? They better not start a cost creep. 7.99 is a good price point.
Omg this early eighties cheese to the max. One of the low attacks even looks like break dancing.
FIRST DAY BUY!
$9.99? No thanks.
@youkoaoshi its in dollars not pounds
@spinalzombie Yeah but I'm referring to how all other arcade ports on Switch are $7.99. Why is this one suddenly $9.99?
I'm sure I had Dragon Ninja on my C64.
Makes me all the more glad I preordered Data East Arcade Classics on the Wii. $10 is too much to ask for a digital lease for a single game from that collection.
Is this only going to be released in the US eShop? I have a feeling I may need to look into creating a US account.
Sounds fun!
When are these games coming to Europe?
@SetupDisk late 80's
@Aven I had a great port of Dragon Ninja on the Amstrad, so C64 seems more than likely. Loved it back then but I remember my younger self finding it quite difficult. Don't think I ever made it to the final boss. It's possible that the tape loading times put me off constant retries.
@Magrane only in the US though. Never released in PAL territories. So there’s additional import costs too.
Though this news only mentions the US so it may be a moot point anyway.
10 dollars? Yikes.
OM*G, I LOVE this game. I will definitely get it.
Have a little cool story about this one. I was 11, it was a lazy saturday afternoon and I was at the pub with a friend of mine. I was SO into this game that I spent ALL my weekly pocket money in about 2 hours or so (this was back in 1994, pre Euro: 10.000 italian Lire = a little more than 5 Euro). If I recall correctly, coins were 500 Lire at the time.
Needless to say my parents weren't super-happy about it. My father was SO MAD (he used to tell me not to spend all of my money at the arcades... which I always did instead) that he even started running after me, trying to kick me in the ass. I'm dead serious!
But honestly, I don't regret a thing about it.
Sorry papa'!
Im a bad enough dude to admit that Im simply in it for the cheeseburger at the end! 'Merica!!!!
Cool!
Looks like simple, old-school, arcade fun.
This is the company's twitter - any chance someone can tweet them (I don't have an account there) and ask if these games are coming to European eShops? @ftegames
Thank you in advance.
I guess Gate of Doom did ok because Johnny Turbo’s nuggets got swollen and bumped up his asking price for this Data East classic by $2 😲🤨😡
This was the first ever game that I bought with my own saved up money for the NES. Still got the price tag on.......£44.99, and that was back in 1990 lol. What's that with 28 years of inflation? About £125 lol
Jump, Forward + Attack all day!
I remember loving this game because of how over the top it was! Can't wait to pick this up.
$9.99? I didn't even spend that much on the Data East Arcade Classics collection on the Wii.
@Heavyarms55 Because it's easy to get games from the 90s compared to arcade systems with decent emulation. A lot of the systems you mentioned are not hard to get the real item for. Or if you just care about the console and not the carts get a Everdrive, that's what I did for my gba(Hell A lot of those games are remade with added features, so why would you want the original outside of nostalgia?). Arcade machines are a pain to maintain, expensive, and take up a lot of space. I love Gunbird but would never get the machine, and MAME is so ass to maintain. Getting the game on the Switch was the best thing. Hell I still want S.T.U.N. Runner to come out on a console besides the Atari Lynx port (Which is decent enough).
My initial thoughts were "why," but I guess why not.
Looks awesome!
My band SpeedRun (which rocks, btw, hehe) has the hot-fire 'Riding Stages' song from this game on our ill-fated unreleased debut EP.
Search 'SpeedRun rocks' on YouTube to see what could have been...
Ahhhh the memories
Yes please!
I have fond memories of playing this game on NES. I wonder how it holds up.
@Arehexes Oh please, you ask why would I want them outside of Nostalgia while defending your arcade ports? Only a very small number of those games have been remade regardless. Many GBA and Game Boy carts don't save anymore because their internal batteries are dead now. And playing outdated systems on a modern TV tends to look quite bad without extra special equipment. While I do still have my old Game Boys and GBAs I would much much rather have those games on a modern, re-chargeable device with a nice back-lit screen or even the TV, rather than the original hardware.
And yes I know there are lots of mods for GBAs and the like out there, as well as ways to replace the internal batteries on GB and GBA games, all of that requires delicate work, custom parts and tools and a sizable investment. When Nintendo or more likely a licensed 3rd party like Hamster could port them easily to a modern device like the Switch. The way Hamster churns out Neo-Geo titles one after another like candy shows it cannot be that hard to do.
@Heavyarms55 Because getting the original hardware for arcades is a pain in the ass (And way more expensive then modding a gba which I NEVER suggested), and MAME is hard to work with and limits useage to a desktop pc (Not unlike a gba emulator for example). Also you sound super butt hurt over my nostalgia comment, and didn't bother to read what I said. I said get a Everdrive, not mod your gameboy (Out of all the gameboys I own the most work I did was repaint a faceplate out of boredom). That would solve your issue with batteries in carts. And if you want a awesome handheld get a Revo 101 (Even supports AV out, and uses a USB Mini cable to charge). That's how I play my Gameboy stuff, because my Micro I had to repaint and don't wanna use it now and my GBASP isn't in the same state I'm in. Also hell you then wouldn't have to wait on Nintendo to MAYBE port it to their new system. Better yet I can play translated roms, and rom hacks on my Everdrive that would NEVER come out from Nintendo. I mean for god sakes I never felt wanting for Nintendo to port old console games because I had so many portable solutions (Which Arcade games run poorly on, even a Raspberry Pi is useless for that). Clearly you haven't taken the time to do any leg work yourself. There are solutions out there for what you want. It's not limiting like Arcade stuff. And I say this as a guy who collects old consoles and computers.
@Arehexes I stopped reading after the butthurt comment because I realized the kind of person I was speaking to. Have a nice day.
@Heavyarms55 Mostly to ignore the solution I gave about the GBA problem you are having so you can [removed] more right?
@Arehexes Mind your language!
I've always known this game to be titled as Bad Dudes in the arcade. Never realised there was more to the title.
@Heavyarms55 The proliferation of "retro" 3D titles has definitely slowed down compared to last gen. We saw lots of PS1 and N64 classics initially, but now we see very few PS2, and zero GC classics, etc...
But . I got f-ing bored of going to bars and drinking when I was in Tokyo.
Now if only we could get the arcade version of RoboCop from Data East on the Switch one day. Wishful thinking. Both bring back good times and memories.
