DOOM was updated today with motion control support, bringing Splatoon 2-style aiming to one of the most impressive technical showcases on Switch.
This significant update has caught the attention of quite a few Switch owners, and if you've previously passed on purchasing the game, it could be the selling point you've been waiting for.
However, before you go rushing out the shops to invest in id Software's masterpiece, we thought you might like to see exactly how the motion controls shape up - and we tasked our video guru Alex with presenting the evidence in video form.

I literally lent my copy of Doom to a friend hours before this announcement. Lol. Now I want it back to try. I've been waiting for this! How great of them to listen to fans like this!
I never thought I would be listening to Alex telling me about how maximum sensitivity is desirable.
I have to say Splatoon spoiled me with motion aiming. I tried playing battlefront 2 and I simply cannot hit the side of a barn with a blaster!
Its good to see the continued support from Bethesda!
Continued support like this will be always well received!
TLDR: Person in video talks about why developers of DOOM may have added motion controls. Shows it compares to Splatoon motion controls via a 360 degree controller turn. Prefers non motion controls (even on S2, as not sensitive enough).
That's 4 mins of my precious time I won't get back. I have seen more content in the Dr Who Max Headroom pirate hack TBH.
I'm just glad that the Motion control cry babies on NL got their way.
@Meaty-cheeky
Glad to have you in our corner.
I'm going to try it out. Loved IR aiming on Wii. Hope more Switch games use it...coughcough Metroid Prime 4 coughcough
@Bizzyb gunna be weird playing a Metroid prime game without a wiimote + numchuk.
doom requires a mouse + keyboard full stop.
i don't care about this and i'm glad devs are willing to give folks what they want. i hate motion controls so as long as they're not shoe-horned in where I can't disable them then i'm fine with it.
Great work as always, Alex. Love your videos.
Can you use the JoyCons to aim like you could with the Wii remote? I'd much more prefer that over gyro controls.
I feel that it's sensitive enough on 100%. I usually get in the general area with the analogue stick and fine tune my aim with motion controls. After a while, I turned them back off and then found myself still trying to use them so I had to turn them back on, haha.
Can't wait for Wolfenstein 2, and I hope it has motion aiming as well.
@contractcooker 0:53 in the video.
@Spiders no problem lol
By the way R Mike is bomb in SFV 👍
@GodOfPie
? It's the same thing. It aims just like the Wiimote, it's just using gyrometers and accelerometers instead of IR.
Imo it's better. Less jitter, which the Wiimote was horrible with. Switch motion controls are super smooth, with sensitivity adjustments and everything.
It works exactly like Zelda using the bow, Skyrim for bow/magic, Splatoon 2, Resident Evil Revelations and Resident Evil Revelations 2.
I checked the patch notes and you all can keep your motion controls. They improved the resolution and textures throughout parts of the game. I swear the graphical fidelity has seen a noticeable bump.
That or I am suffering from wishful thinking.
@YamAsereht What’s funny about your tl;dr is that it’s not accurate. Alex said he prefers S2 motion controls because the sensitivity can be increased from default, but Doom’s can’t go any higher than comparable to S2 default.
Did you try it with joycons? I think this motion control add-in was designed for playing with joycons detached, one in each hand.
Also, in case none of you are awared: you can use the joycons with your PC/Mac. You just need to download a utility to map the keys on your keyboard to the joycons. Using the left joycon and mouse is the best combo for PC games. Just map W, A, S, and D to the joycon analogue stick and additional functions to the shoulder buttons and you can throw the keyboard away.
@sword_9mm I agree with you and to be frank I don't understand how FPS sell so much on consoles as it is terrible to play it on a controller. But I will say that gyro motion is definitely a big advantage in comparison with analogues only
@YamAsereht You're watching a video on the internet about a video game. Chances are your time isn't that valuable.
@Giygas_95 Haha, glad to see someone else with my gutter humor!
Still loving DOOM multiplayer on XB1 @ 60fps. Pretty sweet.
I really like this spla-doom mashup for this topic. Ng-yes!
