Nintendo Labo is a mere two months away, and with a handful of hands-on events taking place across the UK this week, Nintendo has released a slew of new videos that go into a little more depth on what the new cardboard-based experience will offer.
The Overview trailer breaks down the three core pillars of Labo - Make, Play and Discover - and explains what you'll get in each of the Toy-Con boxes, how to use the Labo software and just some of the awesome Toy-Cons you can make as standard.
You can also check out the Variety Kit video, which breaks all the different Toy-Con you get in that bundle, how each one works and a snippet on how to put them together. There's also a nice and comprehensive trailer covering the awesome Robot Kit, which is by far one of the most complicated builds, but easily the most exciting to play.
Let us know what you make of this trio of new videos and whether they're enough to sell you on Nintendo Labo's unique USP...

Whilst I'm not getting Labo (simply do not have the space for it unfortunately) they seem to be getting cooler and cooler!
Seeing all the insides of what make all the things work is just awesome. I especially like the waveforms and punchcard things for the piano. This really could end up as some sort of basic computer education device.
Day One !
I was getting this for my family regardless, I have to say though, I wasn't really interested but now....
That motorbike game looks great.
I'm more excited for this now than I really thought I would be.
This proves Nintendo don't do gaming by the numbers!
No cut and paste job here.
“Video: Get To Nintendo Labo Even Better With These In-Depth Trailers”
Missing a word in the title... come on NL. This is getting sad.
At first i thought, "ah great, a load of cardboard what a waste", but the more i see of it, it's getting interesting, especially the Labo Garage, simple coding for the young.
At last, Nintendo is getting with the program
If Nintendo ever make a new Excitebike game, they should add an optional Labo control scheme.
@Bunkerneath "coding" "get with the program" I see what you did there.
Get to ‘know’ Labo.
There’s a typo in the title
The thing about Nintendo's thinking is it is universal. They really are making Switch meaningful for everyone.
@moltakfire @justin233 Maybe 'Nintendo Labo' is used as a verb in the title. Grasping at straws here. ^^
Looks like they have really made an effort with the software as well which is great news. Don’t know if I’d buy it but looks excellent for its target audience
@Gibb I suppose as a verb it makes sense! But I’m not sure most people would read it like that on first glance
Who edits the 'Editor'?
It got corrected just as I was commenting.
My comment still stands as a subtle nod to Watchmen.
@WrongChops Haha, I was thinking this the other day with the Bayonetta reviews which were also full of mistakes. Someone at @nintendolife needs to proof read the proof-readers it seems.
Feels like there are more mistakes coming through from the big guys than the regular staff.
I was already sold on this but those videos just showed more spoilers that I wish I would have discovered myself.
I think I'm gonna have to pay out for a 4th Switch for my son so he can battle his twin in robot wars ... I may try & find something to wrap the handle portions in to stop sweat-warping too.
Ordered this for my daughters 11th Birthday (which is the day before release) as soon as pre orders went live. She is sooo excited for it ( and I am too!), don't think I'll show her these vids however as I want her to discover all of it on her own.
Man, that you can build your own motor circuit is really cool.
I like how you can play against others with the Robot pack, but that means you have the buy the set twice. You also get two gamecards then..
When Nintendo sold empty Splatoon 2 Switch console cardboard boxes they knew they could sell practically anything to hardcore fans. As you see this morning they're now selling masking tape as well. Next they'll be selling toilet paper.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
Are you trying to say that labo is just rubbish?
I'm super hyped! I've already preordered the Vareity Kit!
@dew12333 $50 says he didn't even watch the videos.
@IronMan28 $100 says I did and I posted them in the forums nearly half a day ago.
https://www.nintendolife.com/forums/nintendo-switch/nintendo_labo?start=320#reply-338
@SLIGEACH_EIRE $1000 says you can't take a joke.
Looks alright, don't think I need it though. Probably wait for some reviews if I do decide I want to try one of them. This will definitely do well selling it on morning shows and such.
@dew12333 No, I'll reserve final judgement but they're not for me and they're not aimed at me. I just meant they sold cardboard then and may have thought how else can we sell people cardboard. Or the Splatoon 2 cardboard boxes could have been a little internal marketing test.
Edit: IronMan28 Whatever, you weren't joking and you fell flat on your face.
Somehow cardboard needs to remind people how terrible motion controls are.
This is really cool. I wasn't sure if there was going to be enough content to justify the price but it looks like there was no need to worry!
Yes but God of War, power, specs, AAA etc...
I like Labo, fight me!
Dang, these games became more interesting especially to kids who love to create!
I mean making your own track, fish, and songs is awesome! Introducing kids to open their minds and be creative again.
I was excited for the píano, but man.... I am even more right now! I am going to play this with my nephews who love to play with the piano, it'll be fun.
Nintendo exceeding expectations, again. Even though the typical gamer can't envision the potential, we can see that the Nintendo engineers seem to love this stuff and put their passion into it
The Wii U era unfortunately had many compromises as Nintendo scrambled to adjust to a failing console and failure at selling the potential. Projects cut short, etc.
The confidence going into this Switch launch is impressive, and I see it here again in Labo. This isn't an experiment in selling cardboard, but a large, involved project.
This is looking more and more interesting by the second. I'm so close to getting these now. Damn you for making me excited like a little child again.
Looking forward to the wired,wacky and rude creations the public will create (well maybe not some of the rude ones lol). Not going to buy it as i am no good at making stuff. And if you pay someone to make it for you it won't be cheap!. That said i can see this selling well. And please make the bike thing work with mario kart 8 that would be awesome.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE no way the r&d for something like this would have taken longer.
Looks like a I stand corrected. I was afraid the games weren't going to have enough content from what they initially showed off to justify the price. The first box set looks amazing just from the piano and motor bike sections. This is really giving me a mario paint vib (especially b/c of the piano, yes). The robot game seems lacking in comparison though, but it has no appeal for me so that is why.
@beazlen1 So excited you had to post seven times?
You know there's a DELETE button on the bottom of your posts, right? (Just trying to be helpful in case you don't know it posted 7 times)
How do Nintendo come up with this stuff? They are geniuses. My Lego and C64 loving child self would have loved all this stuff.
@aaronsullivan Putting these videos on here is almost a waste. They should put up a disclaimer like the original Ntinedo tweet - Only watch these videos if you have a kid or are a kid at heart.
This is the first time I realized Sony's Eyepet is living in the house, I thought it was just an empty house that you decorated. This is SO much better. Kids are never going to want to take the Switch out of that house. (Have I discussed my $199 dock/grip/cable free Switch: Labo Edition w/ you yet, aimed at Labo STEM oriented parents who don't like video games on their tvs?)
They need to make a cardboard fishbowl aquarium now so Sega's Seaman can live in it.
Garage takes it to a whole other level. And they did a really good job of emphasizing the arts & crafts - leaves on the roof - benefits of cardboard. It's not a bug, it's a feature.
Hey @NEStalgia the top vid clearly shows the cardboard is corrugated, it really leaves no doubt. Good thing too b/c otherwise painted cardboard would warp into a tube. It still might, but not as noticeable.
It's completely pathetic how many self-styled 'gamers' were so committed to ignoring the actual games themselves, simply so they could continue pushing the "it's just cardboard" narrative.
It's not just cardboard. The cardboard creates the controllers. The controllers play the games. And the games we knew precious little about, so it might have been a good idea to hold judgement until we actually knew what it is we'd be controlling.
Having seen the video, it looks like each of the games in the variety kit would be worth at least 1/5 of the asking price of they were released individually in the eShop - even without an assembly kit. It doesn't mean everyone has to be into those games, but I do hope the whole "it's just cardboard" agenda dies down and the 'gamers' pushing it start thinking in terms of... well, games.
Is it April yet? Nintendo, let me give you money.
Man we're going to spend a lot of time with these in my house. Such a great concept I can't wait!
Gonna preorder the Variety Kit ASAP. Me and my kids will have such a blast with this! Does anyone know if it's possible to buy just the cardboard for replacement parts/additional designs for the toycons?
Very impressed with the amount of content and all the functionality.
The creativity in the usage of the IR camera is through the roof!
This seems like all the experiments they had around from the Wii Era, but never got a chance to utilize. Well. Done.
Wait...you can use the IR camera to scan objects as a contour map for motorbike race courses??
That's mind blowing. All racing games should do that.
...
But it's just cardboard, armirite??
@westman98
The guy literally scans his hand in the video. The IR camera can sense depth.
EDIT: I see not you were being sarcastic. Right with you. People will still discredit this whole thing just based on the cardboard. And that's fine. It's not for them. I'm blown aways by the waveform functionality for the piano.
@Grawlog I know what Labo is. Thanks for stating the obvious.
Pffft. Where are the games Ninty? All I see are ports and cardboard....
@rjejr thanks for the heads up. My phone must be really excited too to post 7 times!
I need most of these games to get stand alone versions... also I'm going to spend most of my time fishing lol. Also stomping around as a robot. Well done with project robot Miyamoto-dono.
I can see a lot of the wiiu dna in this though. pours one out for the wiiu
@SanderEvers Gets flashbacks of Amiibo Festival...
@beazlen1 I only got 1 thank you, I was expecting 7.
And you're welcome, glad to help.
@aaronsullivan 6 months after Labo launches nobody will be playing with these anymore.
Think: Wii accessories. Or amiibo.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
This entire concept has nothing to do with wanting to "sell cardboard". Nintendo is not a cardboard manufacturer.
It has everything to do with selling fun peripherals that will be cheap to manufacture AND CHEAP TO TRANSPORT. The cardboard sheets take up virtually no space during transport, compared to what molded plastic toys would, and also weighs nothing compared to other materials.
Added bonuses:
The crafting element is fun for children and creative types and goes with the theme of discovering how everything functions, and making add-ons yourself.
Cardboard has a surface friction that is much preferable to plastic in many of the use cases in LABO.
Cardboard is currently seen as a more environmentally friendly meterial than plastic among family consumer groups, and previous Wii owning families will remember how much plastic crap they ended up with during those years.
@IronMan28 You'd win that $1,000.
And no, @SLIGEACH_EIRE, he didn't fall on his face.
Seriously, so cool!
@IronMan28 $1m says, no matter what you say to him, @SLIGEACH_EIRE will just reply all serious and self-rightoeous that it’s old news he already posted six weeks ago in comments.
It really doesn’t matter the point of your comment, all he gathers from it is “Old news! I knew it already! Gotta brag!”; sounds like he really loves those cookies he gets for posting stuff before NL does.
‘Cause he gets cookies, right? You’re not gonna tell me no one rewards him for his indisputably useful service, are you?
Okay. Now this looks all so absolutely brilliant but I just can't see myself making much use of these. If I had children of my own, yes, definitely, absolutely I would jump at these, but otherwise, I'll have to pass. I look forward to seeing all the amazing things that people do with these though!
@gatorboi352 Amiibo still going strong.
the piano one seems like it has the most potential, I think we're gonna see youtube flooded with music and cover songs from it. other than that, it doesn't appeal to me, maybe if I had kids or something
@gatorboi352
Just like how 6 months after launch, nobody will be buying Switches...
@gatorboi352
What ?!
Who said Nobody will not play LABO anymore ??
I will keep playing LABO, other gamers and kids will keep playing also.
LABO is AWESOME, Dude !!
Don't you watch that THREE Trailers above ??
If you still soooo Salty with Nintendo, you can Move Out from here, your negativity here is just Ridiculous !
You DON'T Know At All what is called Awesome games !
@sillygostly
You don't have to have a kid to play LABO together.
Assembly Toy-Cons was pretty easy as long you follow the video instruction.
Also......who cares if you are adult or kids ?
If you have interest about LABO, just go ahead, ignore all the negative comments from other peoples who react negatively with "Kids Toys" played by adult. They just Never realized something Wow from video games.
Btw, Toy-Con 1, Piano, was not so Kiddie and cheap as you think. It was a Kids version of KORG with easy customization and from that "Kiddie looking" software, you can create very dedicated song like created by Professional adult player.
Try to watch again the videos above, better you consider LABO as your game collections.
@bones
Assembly Toy-Cons was pretty easy.
No need tape, glue, scissors.
But you can use those items to make your Toy-Cons sturdier.
Also, this will be your chance to develop your Soft skill (Assembly the Toy-Cons).
@WiltonRoots
"Yes but God of War, power, specs, AAA etc..."
Who need those Power / specs /AAA 3rd party games if with LABO you can CREATE new things by your own ?
Man, this Labo really is starting to turn into something very special imo. So cool. And it's great to see there's a lot more depth to all of the games and stuff than I and some other people initially feared.
@Biff_ARMStrong
I agree. I'm sick of motion controls. Nintendo won't let go. I hated them in Mario Odyssey.
@WiltonRoots
Nintendo should've made cardboard lootboxes then they'd be the hardcorez like muh Xbox One!
@Obitokamui64
You can play Mario Odyssey WITHOUT waggling your Joy Cons.
@JimmySpades I've had my fun. You and @clvr gave me a good laugh in the meantime.
@Biff_ARMStrong Motion Controls are a tool. They're not good or bad on their own. To continue to generalize them like this is derogatory.
@Anti-Matter
Good point. We usually have the option to play without them. I think that motion controls were implemented in a much better way in Mario galaxy. They felt forced in Odyssey.
@clvr We should chip in and get some medals made up for him. Either that or this site needs an achievement system so he can get virtual back pats every time he brags about how on the ball he is, even though we don't care.
@gatorboi352 I don't think Nintendo sees these as accessories to support other games; I certainly don't.
The experience it offers is part of the game. Most regular games don't last people 6 months, and are often forgotten, where the experience one has with Labo is different and involved enough that it's likely that most people won't forget it for a long time. Will we be playing with it regularly in 6 months after devouring it? Maybe not.
Again, these were never meant to be accessories that you keep playing with other games that come along. It would be fun if the steering was enabled for Mario Kart maybe, but that was never the goal as far as I can tell. These are customizable toys that you build, explore, and are encouraged to understand.
Anyway, if it gets some traction in schools and STEM clubs, Labo will be in heavy use for years to come.
@aaronsullivan Don't mind gatorboi, I like him, but he's crankier than I am.
Have you watched Alex's vid? I couldn't find it on NL, I found a link to it on YT on twitter. Maybe other way 'round.
I can't believe they put the level editor from Mod Nation Racers into that motorcycle game. Where was that in MK8D? That looks like a real game now that they could have sold by itself for $40. And Eyepet actually gets to be a character in what looks like some of the minigames from Ntinedo Land. And the robot has multiplayer. Expensive as heck mutliplayer but they put it in there. And we get to make our own fish shapes, you know I'm making Godzilla day 1. Bonus if I can paint it green, which ti looks like we can.
All of a sudden it looks less like them selling cardboard and more like them selling games, cardboard is just a bonus. And if you have kids into crafts that's even more of a bonus.
Still not sold on $80 robot but that $70 variety pack is a no brainer for the motorcycle and Eyepet and fishing. My kids may never even build the piano, and the Hexbug will probably get old in 5 minutes until we get another set of Joycon that we dont' need b/c we have a faux Pro now. Faux as in no rumble, no NFC, no gyroscope, but it was like $18.
At this point people blowing off Labo just don't know and don't care, but the games are there. Almost on par w/ Nintendo Land, certainly better than Wii Play and Wii Play Motion, we own both of those.
Hey @Spoony_Tech you boycotting Labo due to cost/space? Haven't seen you in any of the articles. You should watch the Alex vid, a little long at 10 minutes but it's pretty good.
@rjejr That video is great. Yeah, the robot is interesting. Not totally sure about the content on that. Which is surprising because I would have pegged that one to have more content at the start. It's pre-ordered anyway, though. It's right before my son's 9th birthday and he is super excited by that. It's just right up his alley.
@WiltonRoots hey, we could/should make them out of cardboard! It’s not like he’s always complaining about gow Nintendo found a way to sell “useless cardboard” to us stupid people! 😂
@Yorumi "mario maker was nothing more than level building tools"
Good point. I always felt that SMM was a level editor that should have been attached to SMBU2 (I think Super Mario Bros U 2 would have been the next 2D Mario game). If that motorcycle game gets online, racing sharing levels or both, it would be a full game. Not sure if your'e familiar w/ Mod Nation Racers, it was PS3 only I believe, but that had complete sharing and online racing on tracks people made. Would actually be cool - in my mind - if it became an online racing game that forced everyone to play by the same rules, motion controls. I was always proud of myself in Mario Kart Wii when I was near the front of the pack w/ my little motion control halo or whatever it was my avatar had to show I always raced and did challenges w/ motion controls. Not sure how it works, but SSBU had 8 player battles. Imagine having 8 players in a room w/ 8 Joycon racing w/ motion. I know most hardcore gamers would hate it, but personally I'm all about the fun.
I think the piano has a ton of potential, I just didn't focus on it much in my comment b/c my family isn't big on music or rhythm games and I was so excited by the others. But anybody who likes making music or just messing around w/ noise, watching that screen of the inside and how it works and all the mods, I could see people spending a ton of time in there. Just not us. We'd probably just let my wife build it and give it a whirl for a bit.
But anybody saying "$70 just for cardboard" really is clueless. 5 games, w/ editing tools, the cardboard is basically free at this point to me. We also own both EyePet games on PS3. We didn't play the 2nd much b/c we burned out on the first, and my boys are probably too old for it now, but I can imagine younger kids raising that thing and NEVER wanting to take the Switch out of that house. "No daddy you'll kill Snuggles!" they'll be screaming. Kids love raising stuff, and that eyeball mouth thing that weirder Alex out is going to be simply adored by kids, it's very Pixar Monster's Inc.
@Yorumi "I could see the robot suit being a real control mechanism for a humanoid robot."
OK, now that's cool. I can hear the 3D printers working overtime in the distance already. Reminds me of battling robots in sci-fi movies. Doesn't matter which one, they all have them.
I understand people not liking motion controls for racing games, they are floaty, but that's how we play in our house, it's fun. I really hope that motorcycle game has couch multiplayer b/c I get bored real fast in single player. Doesn't need 8, not realistic, but 2 would be nice. My Switch owning nephew will almost certainly get this so we'll have access to 2 when we see him.
Now if i could only convince myself the robot is worth it. I just wrote $40 in the other article w/ the video. 5 games = $70, 1 robot shouldn't be $80. Maybe not $40, but $50. Or $60. $80 for 1 isn't working for me after the 5 pack. And it's not just numbers, I can imagine 30-40 hours easily between building, playing and creating w/ that 5 pack. I see the robot and think it's good for a go for 20 minutes and that's it. That's all we played Tank! Tank! Tank! for on Wii U, 20 minutes, it just wasn't fun.
@rjejr Not at all. I just personally don't have much interest. In sure that will change the closer we get.
I HAD to shout mackerel in that Animal Crossing Pocket Camp voice when he caught the fish!
@Spoony_Tech "I just personally don't have much interest."
Well you aren't supposed to, your supposed to be excited for your kids.
I get it though, to each his own. I was a no at first, my kids are too old, but I think this will be a nice summer project for the kids outside. Like Pokemon Go last summer. Or was that 2 summer's ago?
@Yorumi "If there's more that could change."
Hadn't really given it too much thought, but they could stick an entire game story line in there similar to Knack. Not that Knack was a great game by any means - yes I played it all the way to the end - but I'm always better at games w/ a story. Heck to me Subspace Emissary was the best part of any SSB game and they didn't even speak, but the story was obviously there. Even something along the lines of Wonderful 101. Anything cliche', give someone a robot suit, let them save the world, the end. That would pique my interest.
@Yorumi Buying 2 robot suits and a 2nd set of joy con never even occurred to me, I just thought a friend with their own Switch and robot suit. You're right though, 1 Switch in 1 dock, not 2.
Here's a thought, get your own cardboard, build your own 2nd suit, don't buy it. You'd still need a 2nd set of Joycon but most Switch owners will have that eventually anyway. Same for the Hexbug. Once we have the cardboard as a stencil we can make as many as we want.
Looks awesome, I would almost buy it myself.
The proper challenge will be how to get parents to buy both a Switch and one of the kits. I can imagine many parents buying a kit without a Switch, making the kit useless!
