One of the greatest (and most unexpected) exclusives on the Wii U was that of Bayonetta 2, the sequel to Platinum Games’ bombastic and violent flagship title. Fans were ecstatic when it was confirmed to be coming to the Switch, and many hoped that it would benefit from some performance and visual upgrades in the transition to better hardware.
Digital Foundry recently put out a video on the Switch version of Bayonetta 2, comparing it to the original Wii U release to see just how much it did end up getting upgraded. As it turns out, the visuals received next to no improvement, but the framerate did see a noticeable bump to a more consistent 60 FPS. It may be a bit disappointing, but bear in mind that Platinum is also working on Bayonetta 3, and will no doubt be utilizing techniques from this port in the new release.
What do you think? Are you picking up either Bayonetta for Switch this month? What do you think Bayonetta 3 will be like? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

It's pretty impressive that in handheld mode,it runs better than the Wii U version. Just a shame they didn't do more with docked mode.
I'm double dipping for the first time because Bayonetta 2 is the best action game I've ever played, which means Bayonetta is the best action series I've ever played. So excited for 3.
Unfortunate they couldn't get this up to 1080P.
im planning to Get Bayonetta 1 + 2 at somepoint. Kirby has to go first
Bayonetta has never really appealed to me as a series but I'm gonna give it a go this time around.
@SwitchVogel I apologize if I seem a bit nit-picky, but I think you should clarify this statement: "... but the framerate did see a noticeable bump to 60 FPS." That sounds like the Wii U version was always less than 60 FPS, which isn't true - the Wii U version targeted 60 FPS. You should change it to something more like "the Switch is able to keep a more consistent 60 FPS." Again, it's a bit nitpicky and isn't really a big issue but I just wanted to point that out.
@shadow-wolf Agreed. Some reason people are assuming the Wii U version ran at 30fps. Not here, but on different sites.
Already have both games on Wii U. No need to double dip.
I didn't play these on Wii U, but heard many good things about them, already preordered them for Switch.
Didn't play it before so I'm definitely going to get it.
Actually I've preordered it already, hopefully amazon will deliver it on the release day.
I really wanted to get this on the Wii U but was never able to line up finding a copy with the first game included and having spare cash for it. Now I'm actually kinda glad I missed out on it before so I have a good reason to pick it up this time around on the Switch.
720p is fine, most will be playing it handheld anyway.
This is Platinum's best game, visually it's more fast paced and exciting than Nier: Automata (red balloon shooter). And definitely better than that Starfox Zero, which is truly zero on the Platinum scale.
Nope.
Not a happy Nintendo customer atm.
My Switch had a faulty SD reader from day 1.
Sent it in to get fixed.
They replaced the game slot NOT the SD slot.
Sent it back for the second time.
Got an email today to tell me they are replacing my console and that my games saves are gone.
Now I have been without my Switch for 6 weeks in total, had to send it in twice and now I've lost my 300+ hours on Zelda not to mention my other games and I'm meant to be happy.
No.
Keep your game I already have it on my working Wii U.
I love this game, but I did notice slowdown on the Wii U when I pressed the dodge button just before an enemy hit me.
I call BS. My WiiU never drops frames. I'm playing it right this moment.
If you haven’t tried these yet , this is a perfect opportunity to hop in. These are very high quality titles. I won’t be double dipping but I can’t blame those who will.
I didn’t have a Wii U, so I’d be keeping my preorder even if this port has no enhancements at all
@shadow-wolf Good spot!
@Nincompoop I loved Star Fox Zero! I hope it gets a switch port with added multiplayer and game modes! 😊
Some worthwhile extra content might have nudged me over the edge, but paying £50 for this when I already shelled out as much for the apparently just-as-good original in 2014 still doesn't make a lot of sense to me personally.
Got 1&2 in my backlog on the Wii U, was considering trading them in for the convenience of the Switch versions, but so far I’ve seen nothing to suggest it’s worth it beyond portability.
I was loyal to the Wii u and bought this game back then. Maybe Nintendo hope to recoup some cash by releasing Wii u games again so soon, because of poor sales on the Wii u. But as a Switch owner, having spent £400 on the console and controllers to then play Wii u games again, I see this as a cash grab by Nintendo.
Any games I downloaded from Nintendo to the Wii u are lost. Give all Switch owners a code to re-download these games as they appear on the Switch.
I won't be buying these again, definitely not at full price.
Said it on DF’s video, 720p with the exact same settings as handheld mode is unacceptable. To me, the Switch port of Bayonetta is nothing more than a portable only title and fails at the docked console experience.
Personally there's great appeal in being able to play select Wii U games on a portable / hybrid (I hate saying "on the go"). I can understand that if portability has little value to you, double dipping is not such a tempting proposition though. To be honest I'd rather spend this month's gaming budget on Shadow of the Colossus, but I know that it will just sit in the cabinet gathering dust, where as I'll be able to play this - plus I never completed it on Wii U.
@mj2k18 I don't think that they "couldn't". Probably it was more of a deliberate decision. Working on Bayonetta 3 probably takes away most of their resources so a straight port with minimal performance improvements is fast to produce and wets the fans' appetite for the real dish: Bayonetta 3.
Anyway, I'm not bothered at all with the games being 720p/60fps.
Need to return to this on WiiU - spent my time on Bayo 1 when I got the double pack.
After I purchased the first print edition, I won’t double dip unless they release both physically
Massive fan Platinum Games and the Bayonetta series. The house will have 2 copies of the Japanese LE edition just so that me and the misses don't fight over the games.
As for if I'm double dipping. Bayonetta 2 yeah (As long as you count both Switch copies as one). But for Bayonetta 1 these will the 6th time I get a version of if.
I won't be double dipping, not for such marginal improvements when I own both games physically on the Wii U. £50 for a cart and download code doesn't sell it to me. I've picked up the remake of Shadow of the Colossus instead, for a very reasonable £22.
"You can look, but you can't touch".
They got rid of the touch controls????
It's not even 720p/60fps. You can see that the frame rate fluctuates between 40 and 60 if you watch the video.
Getting the collector's edition, even though I still have the first print edition of the Wii U version. It's that high on my list of favourite games ever.
Can't wait for 3. But I will have to, obviously.
I don't see the problem. Sad that it isn't 1080p, but it's a nice system seller for those who haven't bought the original because they didn't have a Wii U.
I really want to touch 🤔
Rear end.
They could have at least managed 900-1080p... Oh well, Bayo 3 better have 1080p60 or at least 900p60 since Platinum is building it for the Switch from the ground up.
@SwitchVogel Thanks! And thank you for considering my suggestion and editing the article!
@zool Why are your downloaded Wii U games lost? Did Nintendo take your Wii U when you got a Switch? That'd be weird, because they let me keep mine, and all the games downloaded on it. I can play them whenever I want.
@PanurgeJr I think you know what I was saying. 🙄
@zool I honestly don't. You bought the games, you own the games, you can play the games; I can't think of anything about them that can be described as "lost".
A pretty solid 60fps, makes it the ultimate handheld experience. 900 or 1080p would have been nice for docked mode but it was probably not worth the resources it would have taken.
I'm fine with this, would have liked a LE with a Bayonetta amiibo re-release though
@zool You don't lose any games. Also, Nintendo doesn't force you to buy any games.
@Freek yea I’d be pretty hacked off as well. For a game system that accepts industry standard external memory having the game saves locked to one system is absolute BS. We had memory cards on the GameCube, not sure what the harm is in letting folks keep their saves separately.
@th3r3ds0x
Exactly.
Cloud saves would've made it so much easier for me to back up my data since my SD reader wasn't working.
They even said I should back up my data to the SD card before I sent it in, until I told them that was the faulty item then they realised I was stuffed.
@thiz You have to breath, but you don't have to buy games. Try harder.
Auugh, a straight WiiU port @720P with no AA. That is going to be a jaggy mess on a 1080P TV.
Just do a PC version for the people who want to play at home at 2018 standards. People who care more about portable can get it on the switch, no point in keep pretending the Switch is a home console.
Just like I expected. A rushed port made just to squeeze some extra money out of the Bayonetta fan base. The fact that that bald guy with the sunglasses from Platinum games blocked me on Twitter when I slapped him across the face with the truth speaks volumes.
@FreekI heard about your situation earlier. So they erased your saves? That is absolutely heartbreaking. I'm sprry tp hear this, man. It's probably not made better seeing how everyone else is having a good time and you're one of the few people dissatisfied. I know things will start looking up for you, soon.
