Developer D-Pad Studio has confirmed upcoming platformer Owlboy is getting a physical retail release - only it's arriving two months after its eShop release next week. The much anticipated indie hit is due to arrive on the Switch eShop on 13th Feb, but it won't hit retail shelves until 29th May. So if you're a physical edition collector, then you're going to need to pop this one in your diary.

It debuted on PC in November 2016 to critical acclaim so console gamers have been waiting long enough to flap their digital wings. The retail version also marks the first physical release for publisher Soedesco, although it has hinted at more boxed titles in the future. Owlboy hits eShops in North America and Europe next week. Interesting. At least they announced it before the game launched. I was thinking about pre-ordering but decided to wait because I had no reason to. Now I might consider just waiting it out for the physical edition as I've already had a good platforming fix (thanks Celeste) recently and have a lot I need to play already anyway.

Mad respect, announcing the physical date before digital releases should be standard. Even a little tease would hold me over. This is not a game I need physically imo so early buyer right here!

As i like collecting cartridges, my plan is to have as much as physical releases as possible and so I appreciate the heads up as I don't want to double dip on the same console

They said Q4 2017, but still no News about Switch version.
Nice to see that a physical game is on the way before the game drops so people can easily decide if they want it physically or not. Too often the game releases then you hear about a physical version.
Very inclined in getting the physical release of this one. Pitty about the Joy-Con D-Pad though as I fears it's not that great for 2D platformers.

I'll be getting both. Plus digital. I like that they announced a physical release up front.
I wasn't at all interested, since I have it for Steam, but I'm half tempted to buy the retail version now simply because they announced up front that they would be doing that. I really wish that would happen more often, as I definitely would have purchased physical versions of Wonderboy, Stardew Valley, Steam World Dig 2, among others.
I'm looking forward to this game a lot, but if the physical retail version gets a markup like a lot of other games have had from their digital version, I'll have to pass and just go digital.

The more time that goes by, the more I don't understand wanting to collect a Switch cart that holds one game instead of an SD card that holds many. Unlike a book a physical release of a video game is still digital in nature.
It's strange, isn't it? Digital release, indifference. Physical release, a gaggle of Gollums, sorry, I mean customers. I'll do digital thanks. Roughly half the price, instant access, no unnecessary plastic packaging polluting the planets seas and shores.
This is how it's done. Just as Jools Watsham announced Mutant Mudds physical before the digital released.
