The onslaught of quality eShop games for Nintendo Switch continues with Smoke And Sacrifice, which is being published by Curve Digital and has been developed by London-based independent studio, Solar Sail Games.
In the game players assume the role of Sachi, a young mother on a quest to discover the fate of her child. The game takes place in a darkly fantastical world where grotesque plant-life and animals roam and harsh societal customs rule. Taking cues from modern survival classics, Smoke And Sacrifice evolves the genre with its deeply personal story and complex ecosystem. Creatures forage, mate, breed and prey on one another, creating a living world. Only by taming the game’s wilds can Sachi hope to unravel the mystery at the heart of Smoke and Sacrifice.
Tancred Dyke-Wells, Co-Founder of Solar Sail Games exclaimed:
We’re thrilled to finally announce Smoke and Sacrifice after keeping the project to ourselves for so long. With both myself and Neil Millstone having produced games for major studios, Smoke and Sacrifice is an opportunity for us go back to our roots and create a genuinely intimate story in a compelling world. We wanted to combine a meaningful narrative with the challenges of survival gameplay. Discovering ways to influence this creepy, organic world to your advantage is key to pursuing your ultimate quest.
Simon Byron, Publishing Director at Curve Digital excitedly said:
We’re really excited to be partnering with Solar Sail Games to publish Smoke and Sacrifice later this year. Neil and Tancred have done a remarkable job in bringing this world to life and evolving the survival gameplay that is resonating so deeply with players at this moment. We can’t wait to see how players react to this beautifully told story.
Smoke And Sacrifice will launch on Nintendo Switch along with various other platforms later this year. Check out the trailer above and let us know if you plan to pick this up with a comment below.

This looks decent.
I'm not too enamoured with the marionette style animation, but the art is pretty nicely executed.
Looks great
Might be something to try at some point.
Ugh.....not a fan of this new trend of puppet style graphics. The art may be detailed but they aren't truly animated and it rubs me the wrong way. Maybe I'm just picky.
@youkoaoshi No I get what you’re saying, and I don’t really like it either
@youkoaoshi It looks like an animation made in flash. That's a shame, the art style is pretty neat
@youkoaoshi - At least they're moving away from pixelized, 8-bit everything. Getting pixel exhaustion from indies.
I agree with all these comments having to do with the art and animation. I'm not a fan of this new style of animation either. Im also not really a fan of the thematic art style either but the detail does look very good. If devs want to know what great "hand drawn 2D" games look like, look no further than Rayman, Shantae and the new Wonderboy. These games are made with painstaking attention to detail in creating hundreds of frames of animation across their sprite library. As opposed to tweening and manipilating a single sprite. Others above describe it perfectly as "Puppet" animation. No sir, I don't like it.
Reminds me of Child of Light - which is a good thing.
I actually really like the art and animation. Not gotten into many games in that perspective before but happy to keep an eye on it.
Whenever something reminds me of Don't Starve, you can rest assured I'll be keeping an eye on it. And well, this reminds me of Don't Starve.
Looks like a fresh new take on an action RPG. I'll keep my eyes on this one.
Hmmm it looks interesting...but I will wait and see what it becomes and maybe a review.
There is something offputting about the animation, but I'm not sure what. The puppets aren't bad, some great art styles use it. The art itself is very nice. But I for one am thrilled it's at least a nice to look at game instead of 8bit pixel art. 8-bit was cool in its day because we imagined it as something more in our minds. Now that we can ACTUALLY show real pictures on the screen it's not as appealing. But I'm not sure what here isn't clicking for many of us.
Looks interesting but its not my kind of game. Now make it multiplayer and maybe add a bunch more characters and then I'd turn my head.
Looks gorgeous. "Creatures forage, mate, breed and prey on one another, creating a living world." Now -that- is cool.
Looks and sounds very interesting. I'll be keeping an eye out for it.
....yikes
The game sounds (as in the gameplay and concept) a lot better than it looks. I get why this approach to visuals is done, it's easier and faster than hand-drawing everything, and there are software programs like Brashmonkey Spriter that make it easy to change visual aspects of the character (like what they're wearing or what weapons are in hand) while not having to redo the animation, but sometimes those shortcuts are what hurt a production. At the end of the day you have to stare at that for the duration of your time with the game and it frankly hurts my eyes in this trailer alone. A great idea held down by poor presentation makes it a pass for me.
@ThatNyteDaez Making it multiplayer focused would be exactly the thing that would make me stay as far away as possible from this game. I’m glad it’s not.
I really love the art style but, like others have said, I’m not sure about the animation.
@ricklongo: I've never played Don't Starve, but I've seen videos. This does look like it. At least, the trailer has the same vibe as the DS trailers I've seen.
